We are fortunate that the Bell Foundry allowed a film crew into their workshop to record their work process for our education and enjoyment. The processes that they use today are a combination of old and modern practices and in years to come people will watch this video to find out how we made some things in the early 21st Century and consider all of these processes to be old school!

The "full service foundry". They make everything, transport everything, install everything, and get the final "monk approval certification". And there didn't seem to be one step that was easy. WOW! I wonder how long all that took. These workers show dedication far beyond anything we see anymore. WELL DONE... and incredibly beautiful.
If that crane is in as good condition as all the other tools they use, the owner of that little company is only 1 accident away of loosing everything.

For bell this size probably between 10-16 weeks. Maybe a little bit faster since they are not building unique templates.

I used to design steel gates for a state railways enterprise on industrial attachment. It was fun seeing my drawings being fabricated in the workshop. Fabricators are the hardest working and humble beings I have ever met.
I worked as a Patternmaker for 10 years in the 70s and early 80s. It was the most satisfying work I have done in my lifetime. I sure enjoyed watching this video and the Craftsman involved. CNC machines replaced us in our country but it sure is nice to see the trade still in progress in other places and countries.
Can you imagine all of the lost skills we'd have to rediscover if the world went to hell? This is fascinating! My grandfather (b. 1898) was a pattern maker for Dunlop tire and where in this video the detail was put on sheets of plastic, he'd have to make tire moulds out of wood. Yet another (almost) lost skill.

Очень интересно смотреть когда понимаешь, что как и почему они делают. Сам процесс формовки и последующего изятия модели из формы. Подготовка формы под заливку. Сам процесс литья. Обработка отливки удаление литниковой системы и облоя. Весь процесс очень трудоёмкий но очень напоминает игру в "куличики" правда формочки огромные. Да и труд тяжёлый и опасный.

I love watching casting videos. So far, this is right up there with my favorite ones.
Even with modern technology the work is very hard. I couldn't have imagined the hardship the ancient craftman must undergone to make this piece of art. It's just mind bogling.
I was thinking the same thing watching this. It’s hard to imagine doing something like this without the modern tools that the have.
Taylor's Bell Foundry in the UK still use the same methods. The technology comes later after the bell is cast, when tuning the bell's harmonics.
Lol what modern equipment and technology do you mean 🤔 even throughout the video I didn't find any modern tools that were significantly helpful and everything as usual just used human hands power, everything is done traditionally like in ancient traditional times.
The difference today is that it is only done by a few people so the process takes a very long time, unlike in the past which used hundreds of human workers so the process was faster.
Well welders for just a start. Gas fired forge and other things that I would have to rewatch to make the list , but things are still a bit easier now than then. Naturally
How wonderful to be part of such a team. A team which completes the whole process of creating something beautiful.

Easy to underestimate the knowledge and craftsmanship of these workers! My hat off to all of them for such a wonderful process and product. Thank goodness somebody is still doing things the old fashioned way so that the rest of us can appreciate something like this going forward. Cheers.

옛날 선조들은 그 열악한 환경에서 요즘같이 장비도 변변치 않았을텐데 그 큰 에밀레종을 어찌 만들었을까? 정말 지금봐도 웅장한 작업이고 단순히 돈만 보고는 할수없는 일인거 같기도 합니다.

Very respectable, too, in my opinion.
Many of these temple bells and cathedral bells were made 300 or more years ago. Imagine, if you will, the extraordinary work that went into making them in the old days, without the modern tools, the bronze had to be made from its components, brought to the foundry in carts, etc.

I graduated as a Chemist with a Major in Metallurgy. This video reminds me why I chose that career. Congratulations!!!!!
During my apprenticeship on a shipyard I had the opportunity to also learn in the foundry, but on much more profane things. These men do a fantastic job, I remenber how difficult it was. And the video does by far not show all problems of the job .
Amazing craftsmanship! Even in era of CNC manufacturing there is no substitute for traditional skills.

Tive uma experiência muito gratificante escutando as sonoridades, principalmente os de origem asiática. A frequência sonora que os sinos emitem é sem dúvidas muito profunda e parece tocar a alma.

Very good and interesting on how the GONGS are made. Heard some while I was stationed in KOREA in the 80's. I will always remember that sound.

Glockenguss gehört zu den schwierigsten Aufgaben in der Gießtechnik. Wunderbar, dass der Vorgang hier so schön gezeigt wurde. Eine Glocke, ganz anders als die der westlichen Welt, dennoch wunderschön!
I wonder how this was done before electric lifts, iron rebar framework and fiberglass molds. Truly an art form even today with modern tools
I like that it send like they're just everyday guys working in some old school factory. No master craftsman or artists or anything, just random guys setting up molds and pouring stuff, and then you knock off all the dirt and it looks like some incredible hand made thing
I never tire of watching these magnificent bells made. I would love to be involved in the making of one just to have added my hands to the production of something so beautiful!
Magnificent work of the artisans. I remember that in the small town of Castilla, there are foundries.
They make bells for Christian temples. But the technique is the same as for Buddhist temple bells.

These are craftsmen who have mastered a process that has taken decades if not centuries to develop and master. A careless or accidental move at any stage could be disastrous and force a re-initiation of the process. Every step taken is mindful. I watched slack-jawed through the entire process. Yet it appears to the casual observer. To be so easy; that is an example of great mastery.

I worked at a bronze art foundry. This process is different than where I worked, but I could understand each step and what they were doing and why. They have it down. And those guys earn their beer, that is for sure.

I was stationed in Daegu ROK in the late 80's and there was an ancient Buddhist monastery on the side of the mountain near our base. The monks there claimed the bell was about 500 years old at the time and in the main temple they had a solid gold statue of Budha. The bell and statue were beautiful, the workmanship was like nothing I had seen before.
Friend of mine did 13 years training in Zen Buddhism in Japan. A training and education for future monks. The temple he stayed at had a 400 year old kitchen :)
