    Earthquakes weren't as terrifying in the past because we didn't have to worry about skyscrapers falling down, electrical grid short circuiting, building going up in flames due to gas lines, or sewage and water pipes bursting, etc...
    All you had to do is walk out in to the open field and wait till the quake goes by.
    But, the only reason Earthquakes are so terrifying today is because of all the damage and deaths it can cause in cities.

      They were terrifying in the past if you are in a coastal areas for tsunami which follows it

    • @kamallb4650
      @kamallb4650 3 года назад +91

      That's why skyscrapers nowadays are earthquake proof.
      Do u really think engineers who make such structures won't consider earthquake before making buildings.

    • @Huski3s
      @Huski3s 3 года назад +79

      @@brijeshsingh8460 This movie is very unrealistic tsunami wise. San Andreas is too far inland and the wrong kind of fault (slip strike) to cause a tsunami. That and the wave in this movie is not what a tsunami looks like (see: videos of the Japan and Indian Ocean tsunami). However, further up the west coast is the Cascadia fault, which is 1) in the ocean 2) a subduction zone. This means this fault is prime to cause a big tsunami that will hit the Washington and Oregon coast lines

  • @edetlyshickman6962
    @edetlyshickman6962 7 лет назад +130

    Earthquakes are usually caused when rock underground suddenly breaks along a fault. This sudden release of energy causes the seismic waves that make the ground shake. When two blocks of rock or two plates are rubbing against each other, they stick a little. They don't just slide smoothly; the rocks catch on each other. The rocks are still pushing against each other, but not moving. After a while, the rocks break because of all the pressure that's built up. When the rocks break, the earthquake occurs. During the earthquake and afterward, the plates or blocks of rock start moving, and they continue to move until they get stuck again. The spot underground where the rock breaks is called the focus of the earthquake. The place right above the focus (on top of the ground) is called the epicenter of the earthquake.

    It's unrealistic for them to be able to walk or run normal while every building is falling and the ground being torn open. It would be almost impossible to walk. I'm a native Californian and the biggest earthquake I remember was a 4.0 and that was hard for me to walk.

    Places near transform/strike-slip faults like the San Andreas fault are often victim to many massive earthquakes because in such faults rock strata are displaced largely in a horizontal direction (parallel to the line of the fault), meaning that stress can build up in the rock to a considerable degree. If the strike-slip fault is particularly fast-moving, then any earthquakes that occur on it will be especially intense.

      Well, they ain't wrong. The ground is moving literal feet in seconds, so there would be problems. Tho I won't lie, it's still chilling to see. Most quakes don't do that waving motion you see on film. In fact, IDK if it ever happened on cameral, or at all. Moving feet down and up would almost be like a roller coaster imo. Imo, if the ground were to wave like that, I'd honestly would rate the quake like a 12, cause of how violent it is.
