As A San Franciscan, I don't really see why the Golden Gate Bridge is pictured as being easily destroyed in so many movies. It's actually pretty strong, and it only gets picked on because it's a bridge and they're easy to animate being destroyed...

That was the only actual demolition of a real building in this video. The work was done by Controlled Demolition Inc. for which they and Mark Loiseaux the CEO was credited in “Mars Attacks”.
When GORGO (1961) was first in development, the producers wanted to set the film in Australia. However, they realized that Australia had no interesting monuments to destroy (pre-Sydney Opera House), so they opted for London with its recognizable locales.
