This is the song that turned me into a metal head 40 years ago. One of the best the genre has to offer. Kudos - you picked up on the theme right away - many people don’t realize it’s drugs until the second verse “chop your breakfast on a mirror”. The beautiful interlude in the middle represents our poor junkie getting a fix - for a short time all is right with the world, but all too soon the call of the master pulls him back into the excruciating search for relief again. Another great example of how the music can paint the emotional landscape of the song.
IMHO - don’t worry about pausing. If you wait to comment until the end, you’ll probably forget half of what you wanted to say. If you need to get back into the groove after pausing, just back it up5 or 10 seconds. I’d rather hear what you feel about it in the moment. Also, don’t worry about length. The people who love these songs know some of them get long. Cheers!

I like seeing different cultures dive into each others music. I hung out with a crazy crew back in my early years ( 80's -90's ) Black kids, white kids, Hispanic. skaters, punks, jocks, nerds, drug dealers. We would be blasting punk and metal, Bad Brains and Sick Of it All, then switching to NWA and Cypress hill. Our parties were no joke. And when we all rolled into other parties it was the needle scathing on the record.

    Overanalysing sometimes screws you over.
Sometimes the message is just right there, and you caught it right away.
The very serene interlude in the middle is symbolizing the High and then it gradually grows darker again as the effect wears of and the withdrawal kicks in.
The song is actually deeper on an instrumental level than lyric wise.
    It's quite brilliant.

It is about drugs, but more than that it's about addictions in general and how one becomes the puppet and it becomes their master. The perspective of the song isn't about doing drugs or promoting it, in fact, it's quite the opposite. It's a message to warn others what will become of you if you go down that road. It's an anti-drug song! When they wrote this song, it pertains to their struggles when they were younger and what they've experienced. They cleaned themselves up early on before it became too late for them and this song is a resulting product of that. It's a classic and a masterpiece!

Good reaction. We enjoy listening with you. Metallica and Tool are favorite bands. They are each top notch performers with messages in their music I would suggest pretty much anything from either of them. If I may caution you, if you start down the path of Tool, try to get the lyric videos before their official videos, especially at first, as the official videos can be a bit distracting from the songs where there is so much going on already. Thanks for the reaction and hope you enjoy this epic journey.

As I'm sure others pointed out, the first section is fast and hard and the lyrics are from the point of view of the drug.
Then the music slows down and the lyrics are from the point of view of the druggie. This represents the druggie calming down because he got a fix. Then the drug wears off, and the music speeds up again, and we once again hear the lyrics from the point of view of the drug.
Anyway, when they record albums, lead guitarist Kirk Hammet only comes in to record the guitar solos. Every other guitar you hear is rhythm guitarist James Hetfield. That's why the guitars sound so tight and precise. If you have any musical background that involved performing in a group, you can probably tell that the rhythm guitar is laying down the beat, and the drums are following. I don't know of any other rock band that works that way.

You are right the song is about how drugs controls peoples minds and how you are always wanting more. The master is the drug and people on the drugs are the puppets. As for the solo it represent as being slow you got the drug and you are high and relaxed when the solo speeds fast it you coming off the drug high and you need more of the drugs. And also how drugs destroy your dreams and your life.

  • @ShadowBanned904
    @ShadowBanned904 4 года назад

This song is about drugs. It is told from the perspective of the drug. The drug is the master and the addict is the puppet. The point in the song where it mellows out represents the high from the drug. After the high comes the inevitable hard landing crash. That's where the tempo and the tone get harsher. And the evil laugh is the drug laughing at the addict.

One of the things Metallica manages to pull off... it's *incredibly* hard to overplay most of their work. The songs just don't get old. I'm sure you could do it if you tried, but it would take MoP on repeat for an hour or two to temporarily burn it out.

The music is part of the story. The change in the middle is the druggie getting the high....then the rage that keeps building to get their next fix. "Fix ME!" Looking for the drug to fix them. Then the drug betrays......the victim is in a 'neverending maze'. Then, of course, at the end, the drug betrays the person completely, ending their life. I am enjoying the channel. There are too many subgenre to just learn of the bat. Some genres are really easy to pin down, like symphonic metal or power metal and others are very ambiguous, especially if they're mixing genres.
Neo-metal (or Nu-metal for muricans) is a jungle as it containes almost any metal that's crossed with another style of music, probably the best known bands in this genre Limp Bizkit or Linkin Park, obviously mixing Rap/Hip-hop into their metal tracks.
You automatically learn to distinguish between nuances and criteria with time, it's no use to try and force it.
Calling it rock/metal is a good frame to work from as it's the two *Core* genres.
If you wanna be specific, Metallica is Heavy Metal or Trash Metal, one of the most common forms or metal during the 90s and early 00s but if you just call Metallica "metal", no one would say you're wrong.

You won't stick around for 18 minute songs?
The Nightwish Army challenges you. 🤣
    The check list is
    Ghost Love Score (about 10min)
Poet and the pendulum (about 14min)
The Greatest Show on Earth (about 20min)
These songs are almost always and by far *the* most viewed, liked and shared videos on any given reaction channel.

You're doing it right out of the gate. Not talking while the music is playing. Pausing to reflect and avoid copyright. It's also annoying when people do the former but not the latter, and then end the video xD Just press the left arrow key once or twice to refresh the momentum of where you got to.before you paused.

Hi Zac. Metallica is thrash metal. Some of their earlier stuff nears speed metal.

If you like going on journeys through music, bands like Gojira and Meshuggah will deliver, as will Megadeth, Pantera, Deftones, Parkway Drive, TesseracT, Cloudkicker, etc.
You seem to be very astute in your interpretations.

Everyone sticks around for ALL of a Metallica song. I promise.
Very, very, VERY few have an issue with it.
YOU won't have an issue with it either.
    My prediction.
NOTE: I'm writing this BEFORE you start the song.
RESULT: Boom! I was right. And so are you. You caught on very early on that it's an anti-drug song.
