In this edition of #thedailydoug, I'm listening to the first four songs from the classic album Master of Puppets by Metallica. That includes Battery, the Title Track, The Thing That Should Not Be, and Welcome Home (Sanitarium). I heard quite a bit from Metallica and respect the band. But I was floored by how good these four songs are. Come along for a fun ride! Enjoy!

As a Metallica fan my entire life, you pointing out the nuance of "Battery" was genius. I did not know about the other two areas of the lyrics of this song that you highlighted.
Yes, "Master of Puppets" is about cocaine.

@@paullalremruat14603 I am not talking about the tuning I am discussing the song's home base.
In a lot of live shows they did tune to C# (Db) tuning but that is the tuning. I will say, that there are some parts you could consider in D. The riff that plays as the song fades out is in multiple places through the song and could be considered to be in D.
However, a majority of the song stays on E. The verses are over an E, the climbing riff is in E, and the solo is in E. If you want to talk the approach of "not all is in E, so I am right" then you also have to include master of puppets as a good portion of that song is in F#.

(Notice I didn't even use "Metal" there; it's seriously one of the greatest albums ever...in ANY genre.) To use a gaming term: _Master Of Puppets_ is God-Tier. 🙌🏻 I mean, this album is up there with _Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band_ AND _Abbey Road,_ by The Beatles, Pink Floyd's legendary albums of 1973 - 1979, the first 4 Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath AND Deep Purple albums, _Goodbye Yellow Brick Road_ by Elton John, _Born To Run_ by Bruce Springsteen, _The Stranger_ by Billy Joel AND The Who's _Who's Next._ I mean, this album is LEGENDARY. 🙌🏻 God-Tier.

Fun Fact: The snare drum on Master of Puppets is the same snare from Pyromania. Literally the exact same snare drum. Lars liked the sound so much that he asked Rick Allen to borrow it for the recording of this album. And since Rick couldn't play drums at the time (due to his famous accident) he lent it to Lars.
So that snare is on TWO albums that sold a combined 1 jillion copies.

For most of us who grew up liking and listening to such 'hard rock', we were generally looked at with disdain by the classicists. I was going to comment separately, but you said it so perfectly that I had to comment here instead. I have always said that Metallica (particularly early Metallica and this album in particular) was a four-person Orchestra, and their music was just classical music with different instruments. Bach, Beethoven, Wagner, Tchaikovski (sp?), Mozart, and Chopin would ALL have been fans. They were just born in the wrong time. Hearing someone classical trained explain what we already understood in our untrained minds is just further validation that this is true.

Battery is probably my favorite song to blast loudly. I grew up playing guitar and spent an entire summer learning how to play the entire album from beginning to end without stopping. I was obsessed. It took weeks of constant practice just to play fast enough for the triplets the main Battery riff. And when I thought I had learned the Master of Puppets I was really happy. Then I found out it was all down picking and was devastated. I hunkered down and kept practicing and finally got good enough to play it. This was before the internet and all I had to do was play guitar all day and night.

An interesting musical note for you, Doug, in case you haven't heard this before. James writes the melody to his vocals before he writes the lyrics. He will pluck out the melody on a piano or keyboard, find a subject for the song, and write words to fit the cadence of the vocal melody. You can hear this on a lot of demos of their music.

Metallica Master of Puppets (album) is my gateway to Progressive music softer transitions to songs tat lead back to heavier sections, then odd time signatures and even some orchestrated music from a thrash metal band like Orion. Oh and also add unusual length in songs. One of the greatest Heavy Metal tracks of all time and over 8 and a half minutes is just insane. I heard that transition into the softer section of Master of Puppets and went on a journey to find music that is extended beyond the 5 minute mark that takes you on a journey within the same track.

17:18 The bridge here is symbolic of the high from doing drugs, which is why it's so melodic and legato. Kirk and James' guitar lines are very...floaty, and in a circular pattern, but ultimately it goes into the crash afterwards. The solo before the last verse, to me, signifies the whole body pain of the crash, but I have 6 chronic pain conditions, so a lot of things come back to pain for me and I could be wrong. Loved this breakdown, Doug! I particularly love the way you call out the bass. It's what I played in orchestra for 10 years and I have a soft spot for excellent bass work.

When he sings "Battery is here to stay" I look at my phone whose battery is about to die.
"They're in E" Doug announced for all the thrash metal in the 80's. I think what really nailed it for Metallica after they found Hammett was that Hammett had been a student of Joe Satriani. Satriani really forced his students to find their voice and think of the song and changes, following the harmony of the song in the leads. Not that many metal guitarists did that with backing tracks that had quite lively chord progressions. Some of it comes naturally but Satriani really challenged them and I think it shows in how nice Hammett's leads are (outside the thrash shredding). Of course Chris Poland and Marty Friedman were also fantastic in that for Megadeth so their biggest competitor had its own guns too. But Metallica had slower paced songs and the compositions fit the orchestra as well, the leads you can insert in them become very strong if you get them right. And Hammett didn't go too crazy about them either, which easily happened for metal guitarists. Kept it simple and moody.

Cliff is an interesting case. He taught the members how to write music properly, he was extremely talented and had a clear passion for music, and yet sadly passed away at such a young age. He was the sole reason why we would eventually get songs like One or the entire black album, he gave people like James and Lars the knowledge to write to that degree. Thus it becomes an interesting question of what Metallica would've looked like had the accident never occurred. Sure, Blackened would never have happened, but that's a small price to pay for all the amazing things that could've been written instead.

I mean i was a fan of Maiden and Priest but i never heard anything like this. It was heavy metal perfection. To this day I still think it’s the greatest heavy-metal song ever made. I must’ve listen to it 100 times on my tape deck until finally Ride the lightning was released! Omg! I couldn’t believe how good it was, they took metal to another level! They weren’t even on a major label at the time. They eventually signed with Electra. They still were an underground band playing clubs. …And then finally they released the follow up, it was Master of puppets! I thought “ are you fucking kidding me?” Mop was better! It was cleaner, tighter, and even more complex. A masterpiece! They started to tour with major label bands and blowing them off the stage. I seen them in 86 back up Ozzy. They eventually became headliners! They were incredible live!!

Top 5 album ever made, no question! Thank you doug! Edit: I saw them play the album in its entirety in 2006, on the 20th anniversary, and it was one of the best concerts ever I've been to.

Along with Raining Blood from Slayer, Master of Puppets is the most important album in history. Of course, metal/thrash would have existed as well, but the genre would have taken a completely different path. You should always be careful with superlatives, but this album is a milestone. Thank you for your video.

I know Kirk has said he tried to make the solo feel like what he thought getting sucked underwater by some tentacles would be like. I think he did a great job.

I was happy to see you experience this song. When you have a moment, listen to the studio version of the song solely to have the introduction of the song. You won't regret it.
I was able to catch Pantera in Arlington, TX as Metallica started their 72 Seasons tour and it was something else. Dime and Vinnie both are no longer with us but their gravesite was two miles away from the stadium. To me there was such a spiritual presence in that stadium that evening. Cemetery Gates wasn't played live but was a backing track for home videos shown of both Dime and Vinnie through their lives and it hit the feels HARD. The older metal fans shouted the lyrics word for word; young fans it was largely their first exposure to the band as many of them felt the tragedy of Dime and their music was before their time. That set was like family getting back together in their home; the voices of the crowd (100k+) made the stadium feel like the walls were shaking. My area on the floor were ready to leave after as they felt the headliner just wrapped things up-- then we remembered Metallica still had yet to perform 😅
I would recommend "I'm Broken" for the future for you. The 101 Proof Live Version will give you a little extra for the conclusion due to combining "By Demons Be Driven" with it. It's since become a staple for their live performances.

When, as a teenager, I listened to this album for the first time in 1986, I had no idea that almost 40 years later, I would watch and listen to an important classical musician/teacher from the academic world make the exegesis of it in a 47 min video.
This matches your astonishment when réalize you never thought saying one day:" I would like to experience one of their show". Music unites people. I'm waiting for part 2 with much interest.

Lars is very unique for a Metal drummer.
The masses criticize him, while guys like Portnoy and Lombardo praise him. Who do you think has the more informed opinion?

@@AndDeathForAll82 Lars definitely set the bar pretty high back in the day and had some of the best performances in metal history...his style is certainly different. But some of that criticism I do understand. Watch and listen to how he plays these songs from the 80's now, it is completely different. I am not saying he is a bad drummer, he just doesn't want to play it like he did back then, or he can't...not sure which. But you have other guys like Lombardo, Gene Hoglan, Charlie from Anthrax that are still popping off just as good as they did 35- 40 years ago...maybe even better! I have always thought that guys that can nail a live performance just like the way it was recorded, is super impressive🤘

@@AndDeathForAll82Exactly, and anyone that doesn't realize that Lombardo and Portnoy are two of the best out there don't know metal as well as they think they do.

I think the way he bashes drums has taken its toll and he's probably not in as good of a shape as guys like Lombardo and Portnoy and Charlie Benante. He also has had far more exposure to the masses than pretty much any metal drummer in history. But everybody has an opinion, even on things they know nothing of and could never hope to replicate. Lars slammed the door open for thrash metal drumming and he's also sounding a lot better recently as well.

33:13 Thingy is my all-time favorite Metallica song. I think I love it so much because of the source material. Cosmic Horror is something that people have been trying to translate to film for decades - and for the most part have failed. I can only think of a handful of Lovecraftian based/inspired films that have translated well to the screen, and even then, you rarely actually see the danger i.e. _Bird Box,_ (2018). Metallica accomplishes this with Thingy via sound, and you pretty much nailed it with your breakdown.
    Metallica has four Lovecraftian songs at the time of this post in their catalog;
*The Call of Ktulu* (1984) from _Ride the Lightning_ - The misspelling was intentional, as they were worried about copyright issues, James later stated regretting not spelling it right.
*The Thing That Should Not Be* (1986) from _Master of Puppets_ - Cliff was really into Lovecraft and got the other guys into as well, thus this song was made - an absolute masterpiece. This song isn't actually about Cthulhu specifically, but an amalgamation of the "Great Old Ones" which includes Cthulhu.
*All Nightmare Long* (2008) from _Death Magnetic_ - This song is about the _Hounds of Tindalos._ When making the video they decided to do some weird monster based off the 1908 Tunguska event due to not actually being able to make a video about the aforementioned Hounds of Tindalos. If you're not familiar with these beasts look them up; space, time, right angles... they're wild lol. By far the best song on this album imo.
*Dream No More* (2016) from _Hardwired to Self-Destruct_ - This song is specifically about Cthulhu, but I feel it's an extension of Thingy (1986). Very heavy, dark and foreboding. Probably my favorite song from the album, which was full of amazing tracks.

Master of Puppets, Black Album and Ride the Lightning... Literally the peak of Metallica there. I also like Load and even Re-Load, but these early career albums are just on another level. Raw power, youthful innovations and un-apologetic metal. Metallica!

Gotta disagree , the black album was a complete sellout . I consider "And Justice..." to be the height of their art .

    • @redkingeye
      @redkingeye 7 месяцев назад

@@HoosieryakcatsI both agree and disagree with you here. You're right in saying Justice being the peak of Metallica' s artistry, but only in terms of the progressive thrash metal genre they spearheaded. It's by far my favourite era of Metallica but I think the band understood that they had taken it as far as it could go. They had already proven they were the best and the logical step was to try something new, therefore, I disagree that they sold out more that the songs they wanted to write were shorter, simpler (relative to their earlier work) and to put it simply, groovy. The black album should be measured by what it is - a heavy metal album - not by what it isn't - a progressive thrash album. I don't think anyone can say it isn't one of the greatest heavy metal albums of all time. I do respect your opinion though and stand by you in your love of the thrash years!

I remember hanging out at the local grade school yard playing basketball, and a friend showed up with a boombox with the Puppets cassette, and we listened through from start to finish. I think we all knew we were listening to something that was a cut above the usual stuff we had been listening to.
