In this edition of #thedailydoug, I'm listening to the first four songs from the classic album Master of Puppets by Metallica. That includes Battery, the Title Track, The Thing That Should Not Be, and Welcome Home (Sanitarium). I heard quite a bit from Metallica and respect the band. But I was floored by how good these four songs are. Come along for a fun ride! Enjoy!

As a Metallica fan my entire life, you pointing out the nuance of "Battery" was genius. I did not know about the other two areas of the lyrics of this song that you highlighted.
Yes, "Master of Puppets" is about cocaine.

And they are, of course, 100% right. Not only is _Master Of Puppets_ STILL THE GREATEST Metallica album ever, it's also one of the VERY greatest albums ever. (Notice I didn't even use "Metal" there; it's seriously one of the greatest albums ever...in ANY genre.) To use a gaming term: _Master Of Puppets_ is God-Tier. 🙌🏻 I mean, this album is up there with _Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band_ AND _Abbey Road,_ by The Beatles, Pink Floyd's legendary albums of 1973 - 1979, the first 4 Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath AND Deep Purple albums, _Goodbye Yellow Brick Road_ by Elton John, _Born To Run_ by Bruce Springsteen, _The Stranger_ by Billy Joel AND The Who's _Who's Next._ I mean, this album is LEGENDARY. 🙌🏻 God-Tier.

@@paullalremruat14603 I am not talking about the tuning I am discussing the song's home base.
In a lot of live shows they did tune to C# (Db) tuning but that is the tuning. I will say, that there are some parts you could consider in D. The riff that plays as the song fades out is in multiple places through the song and could be considered to be in D.
However, a majority of the song stays on E. The verses are over an E, the climbing riff is in E, and the solo is in E. If you want to talk the approach of "not all is in E, so I am right" then you also have to include master of puppets as a good portion of that song is in F#.

It's so joyous to see someone classically trained and educated willing to experience music like this. For most of us who grew up liking and listening to such 'hard rock', we were generally looked at with disdain by the classicists. But we knew there was a reason why we liked what we did; we just lacked the training and language to explain it. Thanks Doug.

I was going to comment separately, but you said it so perfectly that I had to comment here instead. I have always said that Metallica (particularly early Metallica and this album in particular) was a four-person Orchestra, and their music was just classical music with different instruments. Bach, Beethoven, Wagner, Tchaikovski (sp?), Mozart, and Chopin would ALL have been fans. They were just born in the wrong time. Hearing someone classical trained explain what we already understood in our untrained minds is just further validation that this is true.

An interesting musical note for you, Doug, in case you haven't heard this before. James writes the melody to his vocals before he writes the lyrics. He will pluck out the melody on a piano or keyboard, find a subject for the song, and write words to fit the cadence of the vocal melody. You can hear this on a lot of demos of their music.

Watching Eddie play master of puppets in stranger things is what made me fall in love with guitar and music in general. I heard that and then said I bet if I sat down with my guitar I could play that. That summer I sat at that charge next to my dusty amp for literally about 3 hours a day. And only 3 or 4 months latter could play the entire song and increased my guitar skills at least 10x what they used to be. When he sings "Battery is here to stay" I look at my phone whose battery is about to die.
"They're in E" Doug announced for all the thrash metal in the 80's. I think what really nailed it for Metallica after they found Hammett was that Hammett had been a student of Joe Satriani. Satriani really forced his students to find their voice and think of the song and changes, following the harmony of the song in the leads. Not that many metal guitarists did that with backing tracks that had quite lively chord progressions. Some of it comes naturally but Satriani really challenged them and I think it shows in how nice Hammett's leads are (outside the thrash shredding). Of course Chris Poland and Marty Friedman were also fantastic in that for Megadeth so their biggest competitor had its own guns too. But Metallica had slower paced songs and the compositions fit the orchestra as well, the leads you can insert in them become very strong if you get them right. And Hammett didn't go too crazy about them either, which easily happened for metal guitarists. Kept it simple and moody.

Battery is probably my favorite song to blast loudly. I grew up playing guitar and spent an entire summer learning how to play the entire album from beginning to end without stopping. I was obsessed. It took weeks of constant practice just to play fast enough for the triplets the main Battery riff. And when I thought I had learned the Master of Puppets I was really happy. Then I found out it was all down picking and was devastated. I hunkered down and kept practicing and finally got good enough to play it. This was before the internet and all I had to do was play guitar all day and night.

I was happy to see you experience this song. When you have a moment, listen to the studio version of the song solely to have the introduction of the song. You won't regret it.
I was able to catch Pantera in Arlington, TX as Metallica started their 72 Seasons tour and it was something else. Dime and Vinnie both are no longer with us but their gravesite was two miles away from the stadium. To me there was such a spiritual presence in that stadium that evening. Cemetery Gates wasn't played live but was a backing track for home videos shown of both Dime and Vinnie through their lives and it hit the feels HARD. The older metal fans shouted the lyrics word for word; young fans it was largely their first exposure to the band as many of them felt the tragedy of Dime and their music was before their time. That set was like family getting back together in their home; the voices of the crowd (100k+) made the stadium feel like the walls were shaking. My area on the floor were ready to leave after as they felt the headliner just wrapped things up-- then we remembered Metallica still had yet to perform 😅
I would recommend "I'm Broken" for the future for you. The 101 Proof Live Version will give you a little extra for the conclusion due to combining "By Demons Be Driven" with it. It's since become a staple for their live performances.

33:13 Thingy is my all-time favorite Metallica song. I think I love it so much because of the source material. Cosmic Horror is something that people have been trying to translate to film for decades - and for the most part have failed. I can only think of a handful of Lovecraftian based/inspired films that have translated well to the screen, and even then, you rarely actually see the danger i.e. _Bird Box,_ (2018). Metallica accomplishes this with Thingy via sound, and you pretty much nailed it with your breakdown.
    Metallica has four Lovecraftian songs at the time of this post in their catalog;
*The Call of Ktulu* (1984) from _Ride the Lightning_ - The misspelling was intentional, as they were worried about copyright issues, James later stated regretting not spelling it right.
*The Thing That Should Not Be* (1986) from _Master of Puppets_ - Cliff was really into Lovecraft and got the other guys into as well, thus this song was made - an absolute masterpiece. This song isn't actually about Cthulhu specifically, but an amalgamation of the "Great Old Ones" which includes Cthulhu.
*All Nightmare Long* (2008) from _Death Magnetic_ - This song is about the _Hounds of Tindalos._ When making the video they decided to do some weird monster based off the 1908 Tunguska event due to not actually being able to make a video about the aforementioned Hounds of Tindalos. If you're not familiar with these beasts look them up; space, time, right angles... they're wild lol. By far the best song on this album imo.
*Dream No More* (2016) from _Hardwired to Self-Destruct_ - This song is specifically about Cthulhu, but I feel it's an extension of Thingy (1986). Very heavy, dark and foreboding. Probably my favorite song from the album, which was full of amazing tracks.

Another top level hard rock band that has been going even longer than Metallica is Blue Oyster Cult. Even though they're only known for a handful of big hits, they have one of the deepest catalogs of hard rock/metal bands ever. I just picked up tickets to see them again in a couple weeks. It'll be the first time since their album The Symbol Remains came out and I absolutely love the whole album to death. I'm really hoping that they'll play the song Tainted Blood, because it hadn't been recorded yet when I saw them last and it's absolutely incredible. One of those songs that pisses me off that it's not a huge hit, because it deserves it. A song about a Vampire's lost love, how can that go wrong?

    Fun facts:
    1. For quite a while they would CLOSE their concerts with Battery. Imagine - after well over an hour and half of playing their typical stuff, at the point where most mere mortals would be ready to drop to the ground exhausterd, they pull out... THAT ONE
    2. The middle part of Master of Puppets (with the two solos) is essentially the story of drug use - at first (solo one) it is beautiful, blissful, almost heavenly, then you get "Master, master, where's the dreams that I've been after? Master, master, promised only lies. Laughter, laughter, all I hear or see is laughter. Laughter, laughter, laughing at my cries" and then solo 2 is the frenzy and craziness of addiction
    3. Their 3 classical albums (Ride the lightning, Master of puppets, And justice for all) have essentially the same structure in terms of song order. Track 1 start with a slow intro that then explodes into blistering-fast trash-metal-par-excellence that lets you know you're in for a RIDE. Track 2 is the title track - long, big, slower (compared to track 1, it's still super fast, it's peak Metallica we're talking about, after all), intricately composed, masterfully arranged. Track 3 is the HEAVY one - slower still (again, relatively speaking), heavy riffs, just... HEEEAVY. Track 4 is the "ballad". Then on the B side you get a masterpiece instrumental ("To live is to die" is an instrumental, and I'll fight you for this) and "filler" (which, again, is relative - 99% of bands in history have not written anything even remotely as good as Metallica's "filler")

As always, enjoy your breakdown and your insight on the music you’re reacting to.
One thing with Battery is this is about battery as physical assault/abuse and the strong abusing the weak and how some get off on that “power”, etc. As well as how it gets passed on in the case of abuse inside a family
    Pounding out aggression
    Turns into obsession
    Cannot kill the battery
    (Obsessed with abusing)
    Cannot kill the family
    Battery is found in me
