In this edition of #thedailydoug, I'm returning to the music of Megadeth based on the many requests for music from Rust in Peace after last week's Metallica video. This is my fourth time reviewing music from Megadeth, and although I'm still not a big fan of Dave's vocals, their music is growing on me. I especially loved the chromatic motion in the bass line and the chromatic third modulation in the final section of the song. I hope you enjoy!

The thing about Dave's voice is that it's a character voice, not meant to be technical singing with huge range and clarity and power like a Halford. Dave's singing style is more punk-influenced, meant to convey the anger and emotion of his lyrics; sort of a snarl if you will. More about attitude. Personally I love his vocals as they perfectly suit the music he writes. He also throws in a lot of clever inflections, for instance in Tornado Of Souls when he says "Hanging up I wanted to cry", he sings it with a mock-crying expression.

Dave’s vocals are an acquired taste, but he does some pretty cool things. Like in Captive Honour, “what do you mean life, I ain’t got a life”. He’s not a technical vocalist, be he is an expressive vocalist. His very clear snarl is second to none as well. He’s never tried to be great, he’s worked with what he can do, and it works great for the music. Great for someone, like me, who likes understanding the vocals in thrash. Thrash is my favourite genre, but there’s a lot of bands that go to a dirtier vocal sound, almost closer to death metal(growling or fairly harsh), and I just can’t get to it.

For pretty much any Megadeth song you do in the future (ESPEICALLY FOR RUST IN PEACE) you NEED to listen to the original mix of the song, NOT the 2004 remaster.
Dave's voice is far too prominent in the mix on the remasters, and many of the vocal tracks were re-done because they lost the original recordings. The original mixes are also just much more natural and organic in general, the drums especially are majorly improved. I didn't like Hangar 18 or any Megadeth track before hearing the original, and now Rust In Peace is my favorite album of all time. It's that big of a difference.

Little bit of trivia for you here doug: the main chromatic chord progression in the very beginning in D is the exact same chord progression in one section of Call of Cthulhu, and Dave Mustaine actually did get songwriting credit for that. A lot of the other sections of Cthulhu are also clearly derived from that main progression

In case someone else has not posted it, many of Megadeth's "official" videos are actually edited for time, shorting the songs. For example, the 'Hangar 18' official video has several solos edited out. 'In My Darkest Hour', which you have already watched, is also edited. And, 'Sweating Bullets' is edited losing around 50 seconds. I don't know why they did it, other than maybe to fit within Mtv's time parameters?

My father was building supervisor for Buildings 18E and 18F at Wright Patterson AFB for about 10 years in the 80's and 90's. They are very interesting buildings, one of them (can't remember if it was E or F) was basically a giant freezer, which they used to test starting jet engines in sub-zero temperatures in the 1950's. I've been in both buildings and the only alien I ever saw was the Star Wars 'Hammerhead' action figure in a liquid filled jar on a work desk, with the label 'Specimen 052577' if I remember correctly.

Personally, I thinks it’s terrible. But all the power to ya. I think “The World Needs A Hero” is awful, only one or two decent tracks on it IMO. “The Dread and the Fugitive Mind” is my favourite off that one, but most of it is sorely lacking. Still far better an album than Risk or Supercollider, both of which are terrible. But at least Supercollider seemed like Dave wrote it because he wanted to, rather than Risk which was written to become a radio hit. Risk is garbage because it was forced, Supercollider seems less so and at least genuine, but still completely boring.

I think vocally between the time period of Countdown to Extinction to Cryptic Writings have my favorite Dave vocals. He’s doing what he does best… the gritty, snarling, passionate and really expressive stuff like he’s spitting venom while handling the melodic hooks well. Skin o’ my teeth, Captive Honour, Ashes in Your Mouth, Victory, 99 Ways to Die, A Secret Place, FFF, etc. Vocally he’s vicious and melodic on these in a way that I think really works.
