this is one of my favorite albums of all time. I'm a 56 year little "old" lady and I still listen to it regularly (though usually in the car, as I don't want to disturb my neighbors - I did grow up a little bit ;) I remember seeing Megadeth on several occasions at both L'Amour and the Ritz in NY. Quality of the performance was always iffy as no joke, those guys were hell bent on self destruction with booze and heroin among other things, but when they were good....omg it was just beautiful blazing raw thrashing power. So glad you reviewed this one, and enjoyed it!
Chris Poland, the guitarist of the band at this time, was just a straight-up jazz-fusion guitarist in a metal band. Some really jazz-influenced licks in his solos for sure. And he'd come back for Megadeth's "The System Has Failed" album. Vocally, Dave's snarl really works on this one. It fits the mood for sure.
That man's legato is so smooth he sounds like a fucking synth. Full respect to Marty, but Chris Poland is my favorite Megadeth guitarist. He legitimately set the rules for what "Megadeth" is supposed to sound like.
My first Megadeth album and one of my favorites. Frontman Dave Mustaine recalled the writing of this song to Rolling Stone: "I was homeless at the time, and I was living in a rehearsal place in Vernon, California. I was seeing a girl, Diana - there were a lot of songs I wrote about her. I actually wrote the lyrics to that song on the wall, in that building. I didn't have any paper in the studio, but I had a Sharpie, so I just wrote on the wall. Whoever inherited our rehearsal room after I moved out, saw the original lyrics to 'Peace Sells' on the wall. They probably painted right over it and didn't even know it." According to former Megadeth guitarist Chris Poland, Dave Mustaine originally conceived this as an 8-minute piece before drummer and close friend Gar Samuelson talked him out of it. Poland told Xtreme Metal Radio: "I think originally it was eight minutes long, and Gar said, 'You know what? This is too good a song to drag it out like this. Let's shorten the arrangement, cut it down to size and make it a single.' Dave said, 'Yeah, let's do that.' I honestly think Dave respected Gar's opinion on stuff - he was the only guy in the band Dave wouldn't mess with. He totally respected Gar, and thank God he did, If Gar hadn't talked Dave into shortening the song." Mustaine also penned the opening bassline, which became famous for being used as the theme for MTV News.
It's cool. I actually know Chris Poland. He has a fusion power trio that regularly plays at this little place near me called the Baked Potato. The place is so small it's like a living room and everyone, guests and performers hang out in the back between sets as there's no back stage. I have a CD of stuff I wrote when I was studying music theory and he actually really likes it. Every few months he tells me he was cleaning his house and he came across it and listened to it again and he still likes it. Very flattering
@@guitarzen5999 Very cool guy. I actually also know Tony MacAlpine from the same place - band called Cab. He invited me one time to eat with him at a Thai restaurant down the street but I turned him down because I had already ordered my potato. Great reaction, Doug! You should react, analyze the entire 1986 Megadeth album, a true masterpiece...For me, it's Megadeth's best album, with the best line-up, despite the overwhelming fame of the phase that began with another masterpiece, the album "Rust in Peace" (1990)...Greetings from Brazil!!!
The first two Megadeth albums were really special because Chris Poland and Gar Samuelson came from a Jazz/Fusion background (They previously played together in a Fusion band) and their musical influence combined with Dave's riffs really set Megadeth apart. "Good Mourning/Black Friday" is another song from this album worth checking out (the whole album is a masterpiece), Chris Poland's guitar solos are incredible and the lyrics are really dark and gruesome.

When this song first came out, I bought the cassette because it had a really cool album cover. Little did I know the effect it would have on me and many teens I knew at the time. Being a rebellious kid, I had no real direction on where those feelings would lead to. Music like this and Metallica could channel our anger at society and whoever we felt was holding us back. Doug Ive been in many bands playing drums and bass. I can honestly say that you've helped me learn my notes 😅.. because I can't read music , learned only by ear..Thanks
The song isn't long, or overly complex. It just drives forward and sends its message... but that drive is impressive and engaging, and the message is universally true and deserves saying. Great song. I've loved since I heard it. The song came out when I was in grade 5 or 6, with the video on MuchMusic.
Though this song rocks, it is FAR from the best on the album. (Still love that you reacted to it 😁) The song “Good Mourning/Black Friday” would be an absolutely awesome next song to react to from this album. Great reaction buddy. Love ya man. Keep up the great work! Been listening to this song since it was new and never knew the story behind it. Thanks for that info!!! It kinda puts it into a new perspective.
Doug! This was my favorite of your reviews! I Really connected with the energy of hearing this song for the first time. Mine of course was when the album came out. Great insight and commentary. Keep headbanging! By the end your hair was very Wolverine looking. Peace. What a concept. 🤓
Essential Megadeth. Dave's writing on this track is so good, that bassline is one of the most iconic in metal history and of course the solos are on point It's still We The People, Right?! 🔥🤘🔥
This is my teen years lol. I dunno if they came out the same year, but I bought this and Anthrax persistance of time, and the same time, and loved them both as much!
I remember buying Judas Priest Unleashed in the East album...And I F#cking haaaaated it, I thought it sucked so bad, I didn't know it was a live album and I hate live albums. But I forced my self to listen to it again and again, after about 15 times listening to the album it clicked and now I think it's one of the greatest live metal albums hands down.
Doug automatically headbanging to thrash with enjoyment.. I especially enjoyed when Doug said, " need to back up," Doug, love all your Metal reactions. Would like to see more Queensryche reaction videos...
This was the album that connected me with Megadeth. Has changed, evolved but this will always be my reference point on this band. Not just the song, the whole album.
Great song, and I'm glad you liked it. I was worried you wouldn't because I remember you didn't like "holy wars." I remember that your complaint was that most of that song centers around one a couple of chords and stays in one hey, and I think you like songs with modulations and generally dynamic music. And this one also structure a bit like holy wars in that way. But whatever, you got this one and glad to see it. Great content, fun to see what such a musically educated person thinks about stuff like this!
Doug, I recommend two most underrated but really brilliant metal bands. I know You'll be delighted!:) Flotsam & Jetsam: Songs: Hammerhead Iron Tears or Doomsday for The Deceiver Metal Church: Songs: Beyond The Black Method to You Madness or Burial at Sea
I was 16 when Peace Sells came out and it was in the middle of the "hair/glam metal" era. It was interesting to watch MTV at the time and you would see Crue, Poison, Ratt, Bon Jovi videos and then this video was thrown in the mix and most people were like "WTF is this?". Definitely a great time to be alive and I still think the album Peace Sells is Megadeth's finest work
Supposedly this was going to be a lot more progressive and approaching 6-8 minutes in length. Then Chris Poland (IIRC) suggested cutting back to being a driving anthem song.
I heard them live for the first time last summer. And of all their raging songs, Peace Sells was by far the best for me, even though I've listened to it 100 times. The progression in this song is incredible.
Glad to see you enjoying Megadeth. This song has a very punk feel to it. Great commentary and grooovy. I’m still flabbergasted by how you shat on Holy Wars, which is amazing. The riffage is amazing, and the fact that Dave plays those rhythm riffs during the verses and the speed and constant switching of timing it is badass
You should listen to Hook in Mouth off of the same album as In My Darkest Hour. It’s was his response to the “pious “ folks of the Parents Music Resource Committee (PMRC).

had the pleasure of seeing them cover this album at this tiny rinky dink club ...remains one of my treasured concert memories
Glad to see you react to one of my most favorite albums of all time Doug 🙏 . I’ve been listening to this album religiously from vinyl to tape to CD and now digitally. It’s a blessing to see the reaction from a true musician and your eloquent way with words of your vast musical vocabulary 🥰🤘🏽. A very great day to witness this magical crossroads of one of my favorite reactors and albums cross paths .
bought this album when it was released and still one of my favorite albums of all time. fav track good mourning / black friday which i play every friday 13th to this day
You were banging your head just as hard as I was the first time I heard it. You have to react to this whole album.
The song came out when I was in grade 5 or 6, with the video on MuchMusic.
that return to forever album right behind doug is marvelous!
Dude I'm a Megadeth die hard fan. Seeing you headbang really made my day! thanks!
As much as I enjoyed your reaction to the music, your lyrically analysis and appreciation of the song is what really stood out to me. Great video!
I love your reactions and interpretations. Please do more Megadeth.
Essential Megadeth. Dave's writing on this track is so good, that bassline is one of the most iconic in metal history and of course the solos are on point
It's still We The People, Right?!
🔥🤘🔥
Good mourning black Friday from this album is probably my favourite metal song ever
Best metal anthem. At a live concert this is a 10 minute epic performance to see! ❤
RTF album in the background!🤟
Post American World, would be a great song of theirs for you to listen to. Dave has always written thought provoking lyrics
Peace sells… is one of my favourites, I have many. Wake up dead is probably the song that defines Megadeth for me.
This is my teen years lol. I dunno if they came out the same year, but I bought this and Anthrax persistance of time, and the same time, and loved them both as much!
I’m so glad you’re doing megadeth…. The B side of that album is just insane!
check out “MY LAST WORDS” what a track!
What do you mean I hurt your feelings?? I didn’t know you had any feelings.😂😂👍
Never seen you headbang before, and I'm here for it!
now THIS was a welcome addition to my day, Doug!!!
This song hits you like a tidal wave of energy and aggression.
One of my Favs from Megadeth!!! Sweating bullets is #1
Hell yeah! Dude, this was awesome!
Black Friday!!!!!!!!!! A monsterous song!
I don’t get tired of this song or album.🤘🏻
You rule men. Thank you for making composer analisis avaylable for everyone. Cheers from Raleigh
Still one of my favorite metal albums. Just incredible.
Listen to the whole album!!! Start to finish, it will blow your face off!!!
Doug, I recommend two most underrated but really brilliant metal bands. I know You'll be delighted!:)

Definitely a great time to be alive and I still think the album Peace Sells is Megadeth's finest work
This came out for me in 9th grade. It blew us away ❤
Without a doubt my favorite Megadeath album by far still to this day, every single song is different from the next.
Supposedly this was going to be a lot more progressive and approaching 6-8 minutes in length. Then Chris Poland (IIRC) suggested cutting back to being a driving anthem song.
It was Gar that suggested shortening it and Dave listened.
I heard them live for the first time last summer. And of all their raging songs, Peace Sells was by far the best for me, even though I've listened to it 100 times. The progression in this song is incredible.
Don't forget about the soundbite from this song that WAS the intro to MTV!!
The entire album is a banger. I had the album cover poster in my room. Drove my mother insane. Mission accomplished.
I can't begin to say how much I love this song!
Excellent video : - ) They got a lot of other bangers and a lot to say, enjoy
You should do a reaction to looking down the cross, Megadeth's first album.
I can´t wait until next 28 april here on México... Ill see Megadeth for the 9th time!!! :)
My favorite part is when Chris Poland (Lead Guitar) plays the Star Spangled Banner but as a Dominant 7 chord in the second verse. Brilliant.....
Loved covering this song back in the day.
You would be amazed at the musicianship of the full Rust in Peace album. The lyrics will blow your mind as well. Totally worthwhile.
Agreed! I've just listened to the track Take No Prisoners three times in a row just now! 😅
You should listen to Hook in Mouth off of the same album as In My Darkest Hour. It’s was his response to the “pious “ folks of the Parents Music Resource Committee (PMRC).
Don't forget Zappa and The Mothers of Prevention .
The whole PMRC saga was epically ludicrous .
They got roasted from all sides at every turn .
Best Megadeth Album, the rage, the sound, the songs, this Line Up was wild... You Shoulda have a listen to "good mourning/black Friday". Nice reaction !
Just had this album cover put on my targa top on my 04 vette.Although had them put in black and white.looks totally bada$$.No words though just the image.
