In this edition of #thedailydoug, I'm making a quick return to Metallica's Master of Puppets to finish listening to the album. Today, we're hearing all of side 2, the last four songs, including: Disposable Heroes, Leper Messiah, Orion, and Damage, Inc. I think the album is a triumph, and I loved this journey. I hope you do as well!

I an not sure if you caught it since you didn't say anything about it during the song, but the bass parts in Orion often mistaken for guitar are the melody part at 25:20 and the solo that begins at 30:14.
Also the fade in intro on both orion and damage inc is all layered distorted bass
Orion is definitely Cliff Burton’s masterpiece. You don’t realize exactly how incredible the bass playing is until you see someone doing a bass cover because Cliff made the bass sound like anything but a bass to the untrained ear. When you realize what he was actually playing it’s mesmerizing.
@@mirkecWiii think there's a Hammond organ in there, too. On top of like 3 layers of distorted bass.
tf the song is like 8 minutes long it's nowhere near 30 minutes

Funny you say that. It was written by Cliff and it was inspired by Bach's "Come, Sweet Death".

Clifford's musical knowledge one of the main reasons why Metallica's first 4 albums slap that hard.

It just kills me these guys were 22-23 years old and they just released a masterpiece that impacted music for the forthcoming years. Musically and lirically the best Metallica ever existed.
Their zenith as far as I’m concerned….
Musically, probably. Lyrically? That distinction goes to And Justice For All.
Too bad they sacrificed Cliff to the devil to get their success.
Almost all masterpiece songs/albums are written by 20 year olds.

There's a reason this album was the first metal album to be selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the National Recording Registry for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant." 😉
Thank you. I was grasping for the terms you used. I read it years ago, simply forgot 👍👍
Lets continuing to listen to Metallica
I would love if Doug did All Within. My Hands (Live) with the San Francisco Symphony
The intro to Damage Inc. was done by Cliff on bass and was inspired by Bach’s Come Sweet Death. Absolutely beautiful. RIP Cliff
Perfect reaction to the intro Doug!!
I’ve listened to that piece and couldn’t detect it. But, I’m not musically trained. I’m sure it’s there.
Come sweet death one last caress?😛
Leper Messiahs are those tv preachers that fake heal people and throw away their crutches and walkers.
“Send Me Your Money" by Suicidal Tendencies was a fun one.

Hetfield had a unique insider's view of the circus of religion, having been raised in the Church of Christian Science. Don't trust doctors and science, God will heal you if that's his will. 😡
His hair reaches it's maximum metal potential by the end of Damage Inc. lol.
how could it not? If that song doesn't drive you to fits of delightful mayhem and madness, you need to check your pulse ;)
I don't know if someone had written this
(back in 2016)
"Metallica's Master of Puppets has become the first heavy metal album to be added to America's National Recording Registry.
The government-run library picks 25 recordings judged to be "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant".
It keeps the best-quality originals to safeguard for future generations."
🖤🤘
the reason why so many metallica songs are in E (even nowadays) is because that's the lowest note you can play on guitar in standard tuning. so naturally it sounds heavy, which is what they go for
The part that Doug said “Sounded like they were in A” is Cliff on Bass…the melody was played by Cliff.
Orion almost follows a Rondo structure, like Beethoven's Pathetique, A-B-A-C-A. Think that's why I loved Orion so much having some classic music love. Also, I heard Cliff's Mom asked for him to put something that her and Dad could dance to. So the middle movement has that waltz like pattern... so cool.
You mentioned it before I could. Kudos 🤘💀
I've always heard this as a symphonic structure with 4 distinct movements (although the last 2 are very short). The first 2 are obvious, the last solo is the whole 3rd movement (scherzo)- brand new, aggressive riff underneath. The 4th movement is the reprise of the riff from movement 1, but without the off-beat.
RUST IN PEACE NEXT!!!
Yes please.
Yes
HELL YES
He doesnt like mustaines voice 😭
Yessss we need this
I've always loved Leper Messiah. Never felt like it got enough love because of all the great songs it's amongst. The middle section where they speed up and go into the solo gets me so hyped up every time.
And that part I’m almost 100% sure was written by Dave Mustaine. If not, it surely has his DNA footprint.
Shit is so fucking tight, obligatory full blast in the car when it comes on 🔥🤘
@@woodchuk1Dave was pretty much completely fazed out by this time and I don’t see his name on any writing credits like the songs he actually helped on.
Lucky enough to hear it live in Detroit this past November.
Leper Messiah is my favourite song off of master of puppets to!! My favourite part is both interludes of the song
Damage Inc. Is a perfect ending to this masterpiece.
My best friend and I built some boxes for two new subwoofers he bought for his 67 Mustang. We took it out on a country road to test the sound and the song we chose was Damage Inc. Talk about a fast driving song...
Thank you Doug for recognizing that not all heavy metal is just noise, and there are nuances there.
And Justice For All NEXT please!!!!!!!!
Otherwise known as the bass-less album. Lyric wise and energy wise it rocks, music intricacy wise, not so much imo.
Now, that's some heavy shit! 🤘
@@abaddon1371There's a lot of bass on 'Justice... It's just coming mostly from the kick drum and James' palm mute chugging
@@razeezar U can't be serious? That's some serious copium you are smelling there mate!
@@abaddon1371 I think that we can all agree the bass _guitar_ is lacking, but it's pretty well known that James and Lars screwed Jason over by cranking the low end frequencies on their respective instruments as an excuse to leave Jason faint in the mix. As the kids say these days, they 'did him dirty'.
Btw I recommend James Mason's 5 different AJFO mixes, each with the bass guitar at varying levels.
We love you Doug!! This is maybe my favorite reaction from you! I agree this album is EPIC!! Thanks for doing side 2 so soon! You’re much appreciated! You’re very knowledgeable! Keep doing these 80’s metal albums please and thanks!!

You're damn right!!! I was 14 when Master came out and 15 when Peace Sells and Reign In Blood. God, I miss the 80's...
The Peace Sells album as well. Right on dude
I think that the volume swells at the beginning of Damage Inc. were Cliff on the bass. If memory serves. It's been 40 years. I forget things. Watching you react to something I heard back when it came out, makes me enjoy it like it's new again. Thanks Doug!
You are correct. Assuming my memory is still holding together.
Next time someone tells me that metal is shit I'm going to make them watch these 2 videos.
Leper Messiah - yeah James Hetfield is targeting 80's Televangelism
True, but there is much more to it. James Hetfield's parents were Christian Scientists and he was raised in that faith. His mother refused cancer treatment because of it and died in 1980.

James said Leper is about TV evangelist
There are comparisons to be drawn however
Maybe not in the way Doug perceived
I always thought of evangelicals too. But now I think of the orange buffoon too.😂
100%, the republicans and trump use religion to fool people into voting for them - ‘Corinthians Two’ anyone? 😂
It's clearly about the business of religion. And the pinnacle of that is TV evangelists, so it makes sense.
Doug, you are right on the intro of damage, Inc. It is based on Bach composition come sweet death.
THANKS DOUG ! MY ALL TIME FAVORITE METAL ALBUM ...CLASS OF 89' ...I GREW UP ON THESE EARLY THRASH ALBUMS !
Class of 89' as well. Plugging into my buddies cassette player on the school bus hearing Master of Puppets for the first time. I was hooked..
Master Of Puppets came out when I was seventeen years old, I saw them on that same tour just six months later at Hammersmith Odeon. Just five days later Cliff was gone. That album and that show was life changing. I'm now 55 years old and the passage of time has not changed now superb this album is, if anything it's enhanced it. Thank you Doug, for featuring this album. Yes. It is their best.
I like the way Lars plays in 6/8 and 3/4 it’s not a “usual “ or “traditional “ approach to those time signatures, and he also accents the off beat a lot which is unique.
@@DefinitelyNotBender For someone who “sucks” at playing drums he hasn’t needed a day job since 1983 .
@@DefinitelyNotBender And? Some people say that Ringo Starr and even Mike Portnoy apparently 'suck', too.
My first ever live concert was Metallica in Dublin in 2006 and since it was the 20th anniversary of Master of Puppets they played the whole album from start to finish! Picked a pretty good gig for my first!
"RIDE THE LIGHTNING" ⚡ full album⚡ NEXT!!! 🤟🏻🤟🏻🤟🏻
I truly appreciate the breakdown of how intricate and beautiful this art really is!!! The mass public considers this style of music "noise", when there's a lot more to it. Metallica defined a genre in the 80s, and in my opinion, Master of Puppets was their true peak, and millions of people don't want to hear this because of the stigma that surrounds it.
Your imitation of Yoda was the first time I smiled today. I really needed that. Thank you.
Damage Inc. is arguably Metallica's thrashiest song. Even Kerry King from Slayer praises THAT riff (written by Kirk btw)
In my opinion this is the best thrash album of all time for the easy and simple reason that it has everything, great riffs, harmony, lyrics, solos, speed, the entire structure of each song. It is not only about going as fast as possible but also having each of these components and it is the difference with the other bands, achieving each of these things. This album for me is number one, following Ride the Lightning and in third place is Megadeth with Rust in Peace, of course for me but everyone has their own taste and is respectable 🤘🏻✌🏻
Really appreciate you adding this straight to the Metallica playlist!
31:31 I've never noticed the double kick there after so many listens! You got a good ear, Doug.
Damage Inc is a metaphor for the band. The dark sets are the stages they play on. "Step a little closer if you please" is inviting the crowd to get up to the front and bang their heads. Great metal anthem in the vein of some of their other songs like Hit The Lights, Metal Militia and Exodus' Bonded By Blood.
What an amazing reaction to an entire album. Well done, Doug! Looking forward to more full album reactions :)
Justice is still one of my favorite albums of all time - every song flowing to the next.. an incredible collection of amazing music. This album is up there - but imho I feel like they came into their own when they put out justice.
You must not like bass. 😂
Justice is number One
The entire album, the guitars are in E standard; EADGBE, except for The Thing That Should Not Be. That one is tuned down one whole step to D standard; DGCFAD. The first 4 albums every song, with that one exception, was in E. It wasn't until the Black Album, that they started using alternate tunings. Most are in E, but some are in Eb and D. Load and Reload both were entirely in Eb.
And then comes St Angers, which is in Drop C/Drop A (or Ab?) etc
Which songs are in Db?
I think some Load or Reload songs were tuned lower like Devil's Dance and Bad Seed
@@MBBGun14
You're right. I forgot about those. Devils dance I think is D and bad seed is, I believe even lower. Like C# maybe.
@@metalzonemt-2
I think - human and dirty window are C#. Maybe bad seed, too. Most of st anger is in drop C, if i remember right and I think invisible kid might be the lowest tuning they've used. Its in drop G or G#
FYI: “Disposable Heroes” is the inspiration for the album’s cover art. . . not the title track
James recently said that Disposable Heroes was inspired by watching pro football with the announcer saying these players are disposable heroes on the grid iron. So in his words, James implies football and war have similarities.
oh hey, cool seeing you here! love all the concert vids
Football is the sport of war...not for the violence, but that the goal is land acquisition. Go take that hill or go get that first down.
Another theory I've heard thrown around is that James was referencing the direction to (or rather, _not_ to) wipe.
While Kirk does the majority of the soloing in Metallica, he doesn’t do all of it. Occasionally James is doing the solo. They’ve got different styles, and it is usually obvious when it is James. Just an FYI, as you don’t seem to be aware of this.
The second solo in orion was james according to the liner notes.
Cliff said that the intro was based upon a piece by Bach
amazing to see that even a classical musician can't help but headbang to metallica. master of puppets forever 🤘
Would be great to see you react to the entirety of ...And Justice For All :) Think you would have a blast with that one!
been watchin a buncha these vids back to back! luv yer insight and such..
Doug, you would love the feeling of playing Metallica on the guitar! Some of it is pretty basic, but it sounds hard at their tempo. Playing "Disposable Heroes" is so cathartic! All the downpicking releases so much aggression. It reminds me of the phone booth scene in "Dumb and Dumber" where the guy outside says something like, "I'm so angry I think I like it!"
As a long-time Metallica fan, my favourite album always seems to change. However, watching these two videos has pretty much cemented it as my number one. It’s truly their masterpiece.
Leper Messiah is on my Top 5 Metallica songs. Such an insultingly underrated song.
Damage Inc intro is based loosely around Come, sweet death. Apparently. One of Cliffs favourite Bach pieces.
Komm, süsser Tod
This was a fantastic reaction Dr. Doug!🔥
Also, I appreciate your very enlightening and insightful interpretation of both Damage, Inc., and the entire album’s overall theme. Thank you so very much! 🙌
Now it’s time for …And Justice For All!
Your summary is perfect Doug. You have so eloquently summarized why I love metal music so much.
I love your channel, I love listening to you describe what you hear.
I grew up in the 80s with this line up. It would have been great to hear what this version could have grown into. Cliff is definitely missed and a huge influence on these guys. Thanks for sharing.
Damage Inc is the music corporate industry
If aliens visited us and we had to show them just one heavy metal album to show humanity's greatest achievement in the genre Master Of Puppets would be the one.
And out of all the metal albums out there, I’d pick Ride The Lightning as a very close second.
Phew, tough one. It's up there for sure. Personally I'd throw "Heaven and Hell" and "Operation: Mindcrime" into the selection pool.
Rust in Peace is also an option
@@vermillion2023 For sure, although my pick out of Megadeth's catalogue would be "Peace Sells...", if just for historical relevance.
Really enjoyed these two videos!
What a tragedy when they lost Cliff. It was the beginning of the end, for me. As you say, he was the glue that held them together, and he was a great composer. This album was their masterpiece. This album blew me away, as a teenager. I'd never heard anything like it. It marked me for life. So sad they couldn't create anything better after. They lost their soul. Jason tried his best to 'replace' Cliff, but they did't allow him to fully integrate into the band. And it showed. I saw them on the "And Justice..." tour. One of the best concerts ever, and a lot because of Jason. He's a beast, but they never really incorporated him into the band. After, it was too late.
It doesn't get any better than this, and it will never ever get old! I'd love to hear more early Metallica on your channel, preferably Ride the Lightning. Thank you for everything you do Doug.
Kirk’s Solo on Damage Inc. is one of my favorite Metal Solos and I think it’s a perfect solo for a Thrash Metal song. And as a drummer i have spent many nights playing along to this album practicing . I feel like Master of Puppets album has a great variety of metal songs. Has Speedy 180bpm type songs, has some songs with elements of Prog like Battery has the acoustic guitar sounding intro, has some Heavy Metal style songs like The Thing that should not be. Orion I think is one of my favorite instrumentals and I would also say brings a bit of a Prog Metal Element to the record. Sanitarium is one of the songs that is slower tempo has more melodic feel and a song that when I want a slow metallica song Sanitairum is great to me. I think this album is a great example how to make a complete album where every song from Start to end has good writing, good musicianship, every body is on there game in there prime on this album I believe . I feel like the when I compare the Ride The Lighting album
To Master of puppets . I feel like Ride has a Icey Stone Cold , Electrifiying feel.
Master feels like the recordings are better overall sound quality than Ride. If Ride feels like Icey Rage then Master feels
Like Firey Rage if that makes
Sense
Thank you for taking the time to touch on the lyrics - one of my favourite things about Metallica is that you can go from headbanging to solemnly reflecting on the lyrics in the same song.
I THOUROUGHLY ENJOY your reaction; its like im listening to this for the first time… and time is fleeting
Anthrax:Among the Living please 🙏. I don’t think Doug has done Anthrax before and this album from beginning to end is so solid. They are the last of the “Big 4” of this era that needs some attention.
Anthrax and their influence from hardcore tends to turn people away because they are less melodic, but Among The Living is such a monster album. Every song is great and there is no one better at writing a “mosh part.”
They had a hard time following up in the way that the other 3 bands did, so they are less prominent these days, but in 87 they were just as huge as the others and they deserve more recognition.
@@oscardiggs246 for sure. The one good thing about them not staying as big as they were was the ability to still see them in a small venue. Saw them in a club of about 1500 people about 10 years ago. Charlie is a monster drummer and it was such a treat to see in a small room.
Thanks for such an insightful review. I've heard the album hundreds of times but never thought about it on your level. Way to tie it all together.
Dr Doug: The whole album is in E, and I don’t even care!

If I remember right, most of the solo's in Orion were performed by Cliff save for like one or two I think. Cliff was able to manipulate his bass sound in such a way that it sounds like a guitar, but it's actually Cliff's bass.

Love the Yoda shout out, I do!! And your assessment of this album's themes and emotional currents and good metal in general feels spot on to me. Good metal and punk have righteous anger. Welcome, headbanger brother!
There's a version of Orion with a synth playing ascending notes at the beginning instead of the bass playing descending. Kinda cool.
And the obligatory there are sections in Orion that sound like a guitar but is Cliff on the bass. And they played it at his funeral.
Love your reactions. Its like listening to good music with a good friend!
It is Metallica's best album and easily one of the top ten metal albums of all time. If someone asks me what metal sounds like I'll put this on. Not only does have the power and power cords but it has the subtle too, like Black Sabbath.
Doug, you REALLY need to do And Justice For All (the whole album) next - it's the natural progression of this, and was where their lyricism and complexity of songwriting reached it's height.
