Thank you guys for doing this. I have watched a lot of videos and interviews with guitarists trying to break down what gear was used and interviews with Flemming Rasmusen ( the producer). James recorded the rhythm parts and mostly he used his Gibson Explorer with Gibson "dirty fingers" pickups. He used Kirks guitar when doing the doubling of the rhythm parts ( to get a slightly different/thicker tone). Amp was Mesa Boogie mark IIC++. (the second plus was a mod done at the factory to change/increase the gain). Cabinets were 300 watt Marshalls with Celestion g12t-75 speakers per Rasmussen's studio notes. A common misconception was that the rhythm parts were Mesa's preamps slaved into the Marshall power amps, but that was only done for Kirk's leads. Some of the tracks were recorded downtuned and slower, then sped up to "normal speed" on tape. (downtuned so that when sped up they were at the correct pitch/ and slower recorded speed so it was easier to get the parts really tight etc...) This also had the effect of making the distortion sound unique/different. Most metal bands used Marshall amps at the time, so using the Mesa's really helped them to sound different. James recorded his parts first, then drums were recorded. When it was Cliff's time to record bass, he didn't like headphones. They set up Cliff in a separate room with big speakers playing the tracks, while his bass cabs were miked up in another room. The Through the Never movie was filmed for 2 nights in Edmonton, Alberta and 3 nights in Vancouver, BC. I was at the Vancouver shows and the third night wasn't a full-on concert, rather it was Metallica doing pick ups, so many songs were only partially played, while "Fuel" was played twice in its entirety. While they did play "Ride the Lighting" and the chair descended during the song, the tesla coils were not in operation on the third night. The stage was the most awesome setup I've ever seen, though it was created solely for the movie and was only used for about 10-ish warm-up shows in Mexico before going live before the cameras in Edmonton and Vancouver. What's funny about the movie is it implies it took place in BC Place stadium, but it was really filmed at the neighbouring (and much smaller) Rogers Arena, home of the Vancouver Canucks. You can see the Canucks livery in the halls, as well. They did, however, play BC Place on their Hardwired tour, but the sound at BC Place is terrible and the shows are always a better experience at Rogers Arena.
I've always been more partial to Ride the Lightning, but this made me realize how much this album improved in terms of mixing and song arrangements. Which makes sense because it was their second album with the same producer and everybody had learned a lot. I think some of the meandering arrangements from Ride were a stepping stone, they have lots of indulgent bits on Master but fewer "repeat a riff 8 times" parts and they bring back intro riffs to tie songs together.
Yes, Master Of Puppets is a concept album. The theme of this album is all sorts of oppression, control and manipulation. While the master of puppets is the drug on the song Master Of Puppets, here (when you asked, Disposable Heroes) it´s the military, on Leper Messiah it´s the televangelist (or any other religious guru, if you will), on Sanitarium the psychiatrist, on Battery the anger or maybe the inner animal, on The Thing That Should Not Be, it´s a Lovecraftian demonic entity - Damage Inc might be the only song which could have fit on the first record lyricwise, so it falls a bit out of the line, just as Orion, by which it is seperated from the other lyric containing songs. It might also be interpreted as a reprise of the first track, being controlled by rage, but maybe also the process of breaking free from the oppressive system, (as a reference to the finale of Sanitarium) what would both make sense.
I see Damage Inc more as a metaphoric way to talk about abusive companies, who don’t care about you, they don’t care if you are happy or not, just do what they say, and even if you don’t or you can’t they just throw you away and get another people to do your job “Blood will follow blood” “We chew and spit you out” You can’t tell anyone about the abuse, no one’s gonna care and you could face severe consequences “Living on your knees, conformity, or dying on your feet for honesty” Rest of the song isn’t that clear and may give to diverse interpretations, but that’s my take overall (English not my first language)
@@PatrickMusilek The original mix is BAD. IIRC bad enough for the official metallica channel's uploads of it to be a better-mixed version without telling you. The kicks and snares on the original sound like the tracks got sent through a microwave or something. I do like the music, at least.
Picture it---- 14 year old long haired rock and roll boy. Hanging with the older kids, Rolling thru downtown Ann Arbor stoned out of his mind. This album is blasting out of the tape deck. Windows down freak flag high rock and roll will never die!
The bad word line Damage INC is "Fuck it all and fucking no regrets", the sound in the Orion intro is Bass guitar recorded from a Leslie rotating speaker in a cabinet.

Patrick talks about all these weird things he is hearing on first listen that I've never heard after 200 listens but talks over the end of leper messiah where they say "yeah thats it" and misses it completely. I've said it before and I'll say it again - Patrick has a superpower of talking over the most important and integral parts of Metallica songs.
I get that you guys get mad at Patrick because he talks during the best parts but I think he doesn't see this album as some of us do, he listens to the music and the production as a whole. So maybe a cool bridge or guitar part isn't that interesting to him as it is to us. The "only 7 are real songs" comment was terrible though lol That being said, these videos are awesome!
"Neither can Metallica". Well, once upon a time, they played Puppets faster live than on the record. Dunno if Chris is talking about 2023 Metallica or what, but its not the first time ive heard him slander them live.
James records basically EVERYTHING and Kirk pretty much only records the solo’s and some of the separate lead stuff but all main riffs and rhythm is all James. Also MOP (the song) was recorded at a slower tempo and de-tuned for the sole purpose of speeding it up to make it sound ridiculously tight at that speed. That’s why it’s sliiiightly out of tune and it’s basically impossible for anyone covering the song on guitar to play it as tight as it is on the album unless they do the same thing
@@jwasikowski1 And on St. Anger, of course, else he wouldn't be on that album. I believe he returned to doing (nearly) only leads with Death Magnetic and onward. From watching the making-of docs, a lot of the time it seems the decision of what parts Kirk will play on the record has to do with wanting his guitar TONE to fill out the mix.
This is their first album using the mesa boogie mark llc+ amps. James had his modded marahall from rtl stolen and kirk called him to try out the boogie amps. Theyve been playing thwm ever since. The rythym tone on this album made mesa boogie a household name in metal.
Lars drum tech wore rubber gloves and caught the cymbsls for him in the studio. Well , on "Justice" anyway. He also records the drums in sections of 2 minutes or so. Then they punch him back in. One more interesting fact about M.O.P. they recorded it tuned down and slower. Then sped it up to 440. Thats how it maintains it tightness , speed and overall punch

Hate to be that guy. But please dude. Orion mid section with something epic happening and you talk through it. I'd even understand if you were talking about something in the music, but you kept on going about random irrelevant stuff. Love the channel, but take it as constructive criticism. There's a time and place for all that talk. The intent for the viewer is also to see someone's face light up when they listen to it for the first time. Keep a notebook with you, jot down short hand points and let's discuss them in detail after the song is over. Cheers.

lol my headphone extension cables are going to need to be replaced soon (they are being held together by electrical tape at this point) and once I get new ones I will hopefully have the correct stereo image!
@@PatrickMusilek It'll be worth it! Yeah, they record their parts individually, so Kirk does the Kirk parts, and James do the James parts. As far as I know we only have one James solo on Master (and yes, that is the smooth part of MoP itself). Usually you can tell their solos apart by 2 things: stereo; James, left side, Kirk right side AND style; Kirk is a shredder, James is a "feeler".
@@dinounit67 playing live that's the case, on the first 5 albums ALL rhythm guitar is James, all channels and multi tracking, Kirk didn't play rhythm on an album until Load.
Middle part of Orion... Cliff, James and Kirk making magic... This guy talking no sense stuff over it. I think you should keep in silence to learn how to make one of the greatest albums of all time.
With who is playing on each side, I believe it's James left Kirk right for Kill 'Em All, James on both for Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets, ...And Justice For All, and the Black Album, then James left Kirk right for Load, ReLoad, and St. Anger, and James on both again for Death Magnetic, Hardwired... to Self Destruct, and 72 Seasons. Then Kirk does most of the solos with James doing a few (Master of Puppets, To Live Is To Die, Nothing Else Matters, and a few more). Also fun fact: there is no Kirk on Nothing Else Matters, it's all James on guitar.

Disposable heroes feels like one of the earliest tracks. It sounds very RTL more than MOP
According to Bob Rock, Kirk didn't start recording rhythm guitars until the load/ reload era
"that kinda crap" Is Cliff bass swelling beautifully. Lol
"This sounds just like Godsmack." No, Godsmack sounds like this...and the drink colors matching the album covers. Funny!
"The lryics are stupid"?
Im surprised he could hear em over his own voice.
"I got more outta this because we talked less" says the guy who kept talking...
Talking through the greatest breakdown in metal, sweet Jesus
I've always been more partial to Ride the Lightning, but this made me realize how much this album improved in terms of mixing and song arrangements. Which makes sense because it was their second album with the same producer and everybody had learned a lot. I think some of the meandering arrangements from Ride were a stepping stone, they have lots of indulgent bits on Master but fewer "repeat a riff 8 times" parts and they bring back intro riffs to tie songs together.
I bet this guy couldn’t sit through 1 song with out comment
One song...not for 5 seconds
OMFG man you missed this chunk of Orion 1:51.24 - 1:53:30
im screaming at this video for patrick to shut up while deciding to chit chat over the coolest riffs. Come on man
during Orion harmony he just talks and talks and talks
I'm with Chris. Battery is my favorite Metallica song of all time. It's crazy how brutal it is and in standard tuning!
Bro. Give him a bong
Who the fuck has never heard this???
Chris is the only man on earth who can say shut up with his eyes and a smile 😂
Untreated adhd is a hell of a drug
Got this album long long time ago.i was only 17 years old.miss the ol days long hair and lots of beers lol
It’s so cool watching you sound guys talk about these iconic albums we all grew on! 🤘🤘
Yes, Master Of Puppets is a concept album. The theme of this album is all sorts of oppression, control and manipulation. While the master of puppets is the drug on the song Master Of Puppets, here (when you asked, Disposable Heroes) it´s the military, on Leper Messiah it´s the televangelist (or any other religious guru, if you will), on Sanitarium the psychiatrist, on Battery the anger or maybe the inner animal, on The Thing That Should Not Be, it´s a Lovecraftian demonic entity -
Damage Inc might be the only song which could have fit on the first record lyricwise, so it falls a bit out of the line, just as Orion, by which it is seperated from the other lyric containing songs. It might also be interpreted as a reprise of the first track, being controlled by rage, but maybe also the process of breaking free from the oppressive system, (as a reference to the finale of Sanitarium) what would both make sense.
Oh, great information!
I see Damage Inc more as a metaphoric way to talk about abusive companies, who don’t care about you, they don’t care if you are happy or not, just do what they say, and even if you don’t or you can’t they just throw you away and get another people to do your job “Blood will follow blood” “We chew and spit you out”
You can’t tell anyone about the abuse, no one’s gonna care and you could face severe consequences “Living on your knees, conformity, or dying on your feet for honesty”
Rest of the song isn’t that clear and may give to diverse interpretations, but that’s my take overall
(English not my first language)
@@Aaron-ts4ym ah ok, interesting! Maybe I should have a look on these lyrics again
Death Magnetic won the loudness war
Not having heard it, I would be shocked if it was more compressed than In This Moments's "A Star Crossed Wasteland"!
@@PatrickMusilek The original mix is BAD. IIRC bad enough for the official metallica channel's uploads of it to be a better-mixed version without telling you. The kicks and snares on the original sound like the tracks got sent through a microwave or something.
I do like the music, at least.
Yes, Death Magnetic is brick walled. Compressed so much that the audio waves look like a brick wall. Barely any difference between quiet and loud.
It drives me crazy when I see You finally taking some attention but You still talk.
We talked way too much durring this reaction and our Ride the Lightening reaction. But I learned from that and we did MUCH better on our Justice, Black, 72 Seasons, Kill Em All, Load, and Reload reactions (that is the order we filmed them in). So maybe check those out instead!
1:53:26 “I know I’m not paying attention to this & I should be. So I will starting right now.”
Continues to talk 13 seconds later 😂
Patrick talks about all these weird things he is hearing on first listen that I've never heard after 200 listens but talks over the end of leper messiah where they say "yeah thats it" and misses it completely. I've said it before and I'll say it again - Patrick has a superpower of talking over the most important and integral parts of Metallica songs.
I would call the middle of Puppets an "interlude" which sounds a lot like a classical piece. Love it.
I get that you guys get mad at Patrick because he talks during the best parts but I think he doesn't see this album as some of us do, he listens to the music and the production as a whole. So maybe a cool bridge or guitar part isn't that interesting to him as it is to us. The "only 7 are real songs" comment was terrible though lol
That being said, these videos are awesome!
"How many things is the bass doing in this song?" (Regarding Orion)
Yes. The answer is yes.
1:18:28 “The lyrics are kind of stupid”
😂😂😂😂 ignorants being ignorants
TALK AFTERRRRR YOU HEAR THE SONG!! THEN GO BACK AND LISTEN TO THE PARTS YOU WANT TO TALK ABOUT IT!
Not enough talking, I could almost hear the music.
This guy is a professional trash-talker😭
"Neither can Metallica". Well, once upon a time, they played Puppets faster live than on the record. Dunno if Chris is talking about 2023 Metallica or what, but its not the first time ive heard him slander them live.
You’re how old, and you’ve never listened to MOP??
Need to read some H.P Lovecraft to understand the thing that should not be.
The intro to damage inc is also bass
Damage Inc has a line that says ‘fuck it all and fucking no regrets’…..so yes there’s a naughty word or two.
You can't talk about Poisonblack in that Orion section...come on man...
I love that you heard Orion and immediately knew it was organ, a ton of people believe it is cliff Burton but it is 100% a hammond b3 organ
There are exceptions but like 90% of what you hear outside of solo’s are James
I love recording tricks like that!
Kirk started to play rhythm on the record on load and reload.
Intro to Orion is bass guitar..not an organ
James says “fuck it all and fucking no regrets” on damage, inc.
Thats how it maintains it tightness , speed and overall punch
bros name is just patrick music expects us not to notice
Everything you like about Kirk’s lead tone is from the Mesa Boogie c+ amps
Rhythms and harmony leads etc. are 100% James on the first five albums I think
Yes I believe Load was the stopping point until Death Magnetic!
And he also said he didn't like call of khtulu how can you say such blasphemy
Congrats on 1k Patrick+Co...Recently subscribed and loving these videos
Oh my gosh! I checked yesterday and I was at 971! It's only been going up by a few a day!
WOOHOO!
I was thinking about doing a video for 1000 subscribers where I talked about myself and some of the projects I have worked on! I can also use that as my "welcome to my channel" video that pops up when someone clicks on my page...
@Patrick Musilek thats would be perspective wisdom that we could all definitely learn from. Do it!!
Is there booze in those drinks? I feel like he talks more towards the end lol
How the fuck does anything on this album sound like Godsmack?
Also, as a production nerd, how can you not tell the difference between organ and bass guitar?
yall forgot to timestamp battery
Oh! Thank you! Ill fix that right away!
@@PatrickMusilek all good 👍
Hate to be that guy.
Cheers.
I agree 100%! I want to do a re-listen to Orion sometime!
1:47:05 The cheek to shush the man after all your guff 🤦🏼♂️ Keep er lit!
I just started watching and got really annoyed by the sibilance between 4k-10k. You may want to use a de-esser, if you are going to use that microphone.
Battery 52:05
Be fascinated to know how loud you were listening to this.
Often find with Metallica songs when listened to louder it feels and sounds different
dude new album or not I'm always up for a good Metallica video
Heck yeah! And we still have Kill Em All, Load, Reload, St Anger, Death Magnetic, and Hardwired coming up eventually!
“The lyrics are kinda stupid”. If that’s the case, then Bad bunny “sings” stupider stuff, dude. At least, I appreciate your honest opinion about it.
As Patrick says in the beginning of Master. James is on the left ear and Kirk is on the right. Or the opposite if your headphone is revearsed.
lol my headphone extension cables are going to need to be replaced soon (they are being held together by electrical tape at this point) and once I get new ones I will hopefully have the correct stereo image!
@Dino also the second solo in orion is james. Says in the liner notes.
Jist because you think of something, doesn’t mean you have to say it right at that moment, js
Always a bittersweet listen for me because my mind just races with what Cliff was going to come up with next
This is a reaction? Not
Based on the kind of things you guys seem to like I recommend checking out Glow On by Turnstile! I would love to y’all’s reaction and commentary on that record.
The Thing That Should Not Be is the first song they purposely didn’t do in E Standard, it’s D standard.
The funny about Lord of the rings and your reference is that I never saw or cared about the movies, somehow, and I have no clue why, my brother wanted to go see the second one(the one referenced here) while I had the flu. That was one of the worst experiences of my life. I was delirious with a fever, nodding in n out with my head the size of the Titanic, shivering and sweating. I felt ok ish when I went in, and of course they had the ac on.i had my arms and knees tucked in to my shirt or sweatshirt whatever I was wearing, and I swear the movie kept ending only to fade back in.and than what felt like 2 more hours followed by a fade out and fade in. Followed by 2 hours more only to fade out and fade back in. I swear I was dreaming of this big long super boring screen, followed by a fade out, and than what seemed like months going by, before fading back in. I shivered out of there swearing that that's what hell would be like; shivering and sweating and blackness for eternity, followed by fading in lord of the rings, with a hundred thousand years of time passing before fading out on n on for all eternity and forever and beyond times eternity. That was one of the worst days of my life. I forget if it was the flu, or the flu like battle I came down after food poisoning from Burger King. Either way I never liked or watched or cared about Lord of the rings ever
