Here's a bunch of stuff regarding Megadeth that's good to know. Mustaine was kicked out of Metallica on their way to record KEA, and started Megadeth as (essentially) a revenge band. He eventually forgave James and Lars around '97 realizing that he was also massively successful and trying to out do them was pointless Dave wrote a lot of material for KEA and a bit for RTL and supposedly MOP. Mechanix (the four horsemen) was orignially Dave's song that they slowed and edited for KEA (look up the no life till leather demo version) In 2002 Dave sustained an arm injury in which he damaged his nerves in his hand and had to completely re-learn guitar. which is why he had so much time for the remixes when The system has failed (2004) was recorded, dave mustain and david ellefson were the only members in the band, so they had a bunch of studio musicians come in to record sections of that album. That's a great list that doesn't parrot back all the same songs most people suggest. Good job. I'll suggest a few of my own. Reckoning Day (Youthanasia) Back in the Day (The System Has Failed) Night Stalkers (The Sick, The Dying,...And The Dead) Poisonous Shadows (Dystopia)
@@chief999 i was heavily debating putting poisonous shadows and back in the day on the list, but I figured that would be a lot of songs to listen to in one sitting
Dave worked in record shop when he was 14 -15 . Judas Priest , Motorhead , Led Zeppelin , Britain Punk , Cat Stevens ( his sister adore that singer ) , Iron Maiden , many more .( albums and cassette shop ! ) .
Patrick’s criticisms are triggering, unless you remember what he likes, then it makes sense. I’ve come to realize what I enjoy, he dislikes and what I love, he hates. And vice versa. Nothing he mentions as great or good I would want to subject myself to. Lol
I've originally left this suggestion on the Discord, but I would love to see a Black Sabbath reaction. I also saw Patrick mention Judas Priest which I would love to see you react to as well. Both bands basically had the same early history of being born and raised from the slums of Burmingham, England and both bands have seen their fair share of ups and downs. Unlike Judas Priest though, Black Sabbath has seen many more lineup changes especially with all the unique singers ranging from Ozzy, to Dio, even to Ian Gillan. I'd love to see what you think about both bands.
On Dystopia, it was their first album since Dave had gotten throat cancer, so to 6 band has downtuned from E to D. Now Dave is thankfully cancer free, but his voice has been permanently damaged by the cancer and treatment, so the most recent and future Megadeth albums will be in D
Actually they tuned down because his voice was gone. Eventually he got diagnosed with cancer but he was already sounding pretty bad on live performances since 2013 or so
patrick, you're 100% correct with your observation that a lot of people really like their metal to sound relatively 'unpolished' and natural. and of course that goes even further with stuff like black metal and more crossover-y hardcore-influenced metal, etc. it's clear that that's not specifically what you look for in music, but i hope your appreciation for that kind of sound will grow...!
oh, and on that note: if you guys do some megadeth full album listens, i absolutely think you should START with rust in peace. most of their fans will agree that it's their best... though i would also recommend following up on that one with youthanasia, which has a much more midtempo, big, progressive and (i would say) polished sound--and with the same lineup!
Thanks for diving in. My thoughts on your thoughts. First, you definitely got a VERY limited exposure, and yes, several of the picks did not represent their albums. Second, the voice lol. Dave’s voice is very much an acquired taste, and even then it’s hit or miss. I went from struggling to get into them to them being my favorite band. Third, the sound production. They’ve actually changed a good bit in that area, but it’s less a total reinvention and more a gradual shift. It’s more apparent when you listen to the albums in order. The “parody/caricature” thing. Again his voice is weird and it’s true he couldn’t find another singer. That aside, it’s over the top. It’s theatrical at times. It’s corny at times. It’s over the top but mostly it’s FUN. Not all metal has to be devoid of fun lol. Watch the music video for Sweating Bullets sometime. It’s clearly comedic and they’re having a blast. I’d really be curious to see how you guys react to the original mix of their 1997 album Cryptic Writings. It was well within their peak commercial era but before they went too far on that direction with Risk. It’s in my opinion by FAR their best mix of radio friendly structure and presentation with heavy credibility. It’s a good radio hard rock album with pristine production. Dave worked with some Nashville producers to purposely go for that sound. Really would like to hear your take. For songs from it, Trust, Almost Honest and She Wolf are great. Finally…. Cannot believe you house slagged Holy Wars lol. And you claim to like metal. Jk. Mostly. This man’s voice is definitely an acquired taste but they’re so good once you’re there. For Anthrax, the Among the Living album is generally their Master of Puppets/Peace Sells/Reign in Blood Thanks guys! Also Patrick much better on the talking this time! 🎉
I forgot! Dystopia the Sony is a carbon copy of Hangar 18 from Rust in Peace. They’re playing different stuff but it’s basically a one for one we make of the structure. And I get especially as current audio engineers that you would appreciate the more modern production, but I personally hate the artificial drum thing, the excessive compression and how everything is engineered to sound exactly the same these days. I would happily give up a little oomph in the sampled snare to get a more organic drum and more headroom and more blend and to just sound like an actual band. I don’t need every album to sound like every other. That’s just me.
Hello, long read ahead, so bear with me: 1) I have purposely neglected Megadeth's material because I am a Metallica fan but damn every now and then I come across hidden gems that make me enjoy much more of what they are and respect them even further. Crush 'Em is such a fun tune Patrick, thank you for enlightening us with that. 2) Now some context for what happened in 2004. I don't know if this is related but the context is necessary. Dave back in 2002 had many health complications, such as a nerve injury in his left arm after he fell asleep on a chair and it caused pressure on its arm, causing to it to be paralyzed and Dave wasn't even able to make a fist after the injury. He did have to go to therapy in order to reteach his arm how to play guitar. It seems a little bit of a stretch, but that's a summary of what happened. Megadeth was disbanded for some time, and then Dave decided that he wanted to work on remastering and remixing all existing Megadeth released up to that point. Maybe those years without touring or writing made him think that this was necessary up to some extent. 3) Many songs from Metallica's debut and second album have riffs that came from Dave: The Four Horsemen, Jump In The Fire, Phantom Lord, Metal Militia - Ride The Lightning, The Call of Ktulu. But Dave likes to say that he wrote many other riffs that remained uncredited. -----Apple Music has all of the original mixes of Megadeth releases, but me living outside of the USA, I have a ease of access for me to get all versions, remasters, remixes and stuff similar to that of any band----- 4) We are sorry that Peace Sells left you a little disappointed to what Megadeth was and is at the beginning; Thrash and Speed Metal. Also Dave liked to touch occult and gnarly topics such as Wake Up Dead, The Conjuring and Good Mourning... Black Friday. These are the songs that you should give it a listen in your spare time and it will leave a better impression. Or maybe a quick snippet could be Rattlehead from their original album. 5) Holy Wars is much better on the 2004 remaster, at least on the bass and drum mixes. But also, Hangar 18 sounds much better in my opinion with the dynamics of the drum. It is a shame that you skipped the solo because on the 2004 remaster they got rid of the solo panning in the original Holy Wars song. All right. I will stop yapping; it is always a joy to see these kinds of long videos with Chris and Chris. We understand that is hard to get them together to record, and you look to be doing nice with your treatment Patrick! Hopefully soon there is going to be a format for all to be involved and me more videos together!
My two favorite Megadeth Albums are Rust in Piece and Dystopia, i also really like a lot of songs from Peace Sells, Youthanasia and The Sick, The Dying and The Dead. I hope you guys do more Megadeth, i know Dave's vocals are hard for some people but i hope you can get used to them at least, Dave is a guitarist first but his vocals give a certain charm to the band i think, one thing i like about metal is that something does not really needs to be "good" to be good (bad production ads to the charm of black metal for exemple, it sucks and i love it lol). God bless and have a good day.
While there has been many members in Megadeth their departures aren’t all without reason Chris was fired for pawning the band’s equipment to buy drugs I think Gar did the same and was also unreliable towards the end of his time in the band. Chuck the drummer on SFSGSW was the drum tech and became gars replacement later being fired for being unreliable. Jeff young replaced Chris but Jeff was fired because Dave suspected him of having an affair with his then fiancé. Then Marty and Nick joined and that was the lineup for about ten years with Marty quitting the band in 99/2000 I believe. Many of the Changing of members has happened in more recent years.
Thanks for the video. I'd like you to do another Megadeth poll. I think you need to hear somethings off Killing is my Business, Youthanasia, Cryptic Writings, The System Has Failed, Symphony of Destruction the song..... an even maybe even Supercollider ;)
Holy Wars.. The Punishment Due is my favorite album opener of all time! And Countdown to Extinction was their critically accaimed that made them world famous "Black Album" those songs were all over MTV when I was growing up! Rust in Peace was their And Justice.. I've watched all of your Metallica videos but the video that stands out to me the most is when you listened to Spiritbox The Fear of Fear because I had no idea that even came out and never much got into them other than a few listens but something hit me about that EP, I instantly fell in love with it! So much so that I literally went on Amazon and ordered the vinyl immediately and also Eternal Blue and then just recently even paid $110 for a collectors edition of Constance on vinyl because that song is pure brilliance and has literally pierced my soul.. Ever since your video, I think I've listened to Spiritbox every single day! Had pretty much the roughest start of any year in my entire life and their music got me through those dark days and I honestly don't even think I'd be around anymore if their music wasn't in my life and I have to give you credit for that too. There are a ton of their videos on here and every song is also here and they are all amazing! Just wanted to express my gratitude for reintroducing that spectacular band into my life, they made me feel things I never thought I'd ever feel again are now my favorite band of all time! 💗
Let’s listen to something besides Metallica and then constantly compare it to Metallica. In 30 years you’ll realize Megadeth is better, like most of us.
I think you guys should really do some Pantera! They changed the course metal for the 90's, it's hard to find a band that was not influenced by Pantera after Cowboys From Hell and Vulgar Display Of Power. Dimebag is considered one of the greatest guitarists and Phil Anselmo's vocals were quite groundbreaking as well. Pantera's mixing and production may not be considered "great", but it's arguably a large factor in what makes them themselves. Especially with Dimebag's guitar tone.
If you're going to do anthrax (which i highly recommend!) These are some song I suggest: Among the Living, Keep in in the Family, Caught in the Mosh, Indians, Be All End All, Skeleton in the Closet, Madhouse, and NFL just to name a few That had their lead singer change, and then after some time, changed again back to the original singer - All of those classics above are also on an album called Greater of two evils, which features the alternate singer, instead of the original singer Other songs I like that aren't necessarily among the classics: Fight 'em Till You Cant, The Giant, You Gotta Believe, and Crush (among others)
I don't get the people who complain about patrick commenting in throughout the song, if you want to listen to the song you can just pull it up and listen yourself. to be fair I do get what they're tryna say but at the same time I don't. that makes no sense but yes Also can't wait for a slayer video (if there will be one in the future)
@@tugehitties I think for most people the reason they get frustrated when we (or more likely I) am talking over the music so much is because they want me to experience the song to its fullest extent, every piece of it. They want me to hear it the way that they hear it... Which I think is actually coming from a positive place. But since we focus on technical things here, I feel like it's more important to talk about the music in real time so that you can hear an example of what we're talking about in that exact moment. If we were talking about the message of a song or just impressions of a song overall, then we could definitely talk about it after we were done listening to it, but since we're talking about technical things it just makes more sense to me!
I LOVE the production of the original Peace Sells album. It was the best Megadeth ever sounded on tape in my opinion. And the rawness is such a cool thing. I love recordings where you can hear those little thigs like pedal switches and fingers sliding on the strings.
Please do Anthrax, they brought out fully remastered versions of their early iconic albums Spreading the Disease, Among the Living, State of Euphoria and Persistence of Time. All amazing albums and the remasters sound so much better.
You failed to mention, or maybe I missed it ... Crush 'Em was on the movie soundtrack for Universal Soldier which Bill Goldberg was in ... and why he used it in his matches for his WCW entrance
Rust In Peace is one of my favorite metal albums, completely in spite of Dave's voice which I can merely tolerate. Feel like you would probably like the album Cryptic Writings, it's like their second-poppiest album before Dave went completely nuts and started making disco and covering the Friends theme or whatever.
I’ve been watching this channel for a while now and have a bad tendency to watch your videos from front to back 😂. Anyway as someone who has probably seen like 50 hours of you guys listening to music and talking I have some thoughts. I would love to see you do a ‘audio engineers listen to thrash metal’ video, and listen to a compilation of thrash bands and see how the production was differnt between bands, and globally, because the way things were produced seems to differ with both age and location it seems. I would reccomend Slayer, Sodom, anthrax, testament, perhaps a more modern band as well like Municipal waste, it would be interesting to see how these bands vary both musically and in terms of production, and how time and location of the bands links to that too. For example Sodoms early stuff, despite being late 80s, sounds like stuff from the early 80s, and this seems true for a lot of german stuff. Additionally if you ever want more hands to listen to, I would say do Tool with caution. Tool fans are psychopathically obsessive, if you thought Zeppelin fans were bad, you know nothing. They only have five albums, so I would start with their first one if it were me, however if you only wish to do one video on tool, do lateralus. But yes you will be ripped apart for talking over it, being negative, so be prepared for that backlash. I also think you should Definelty listen to Death, whose last two albums are absolutely stellar front to back, and Gojira and mastodon. To me Gojira don’t have amazing albums front to back, but they have a lot of amazing songs across their discography. Mastodon I would say the same for, but mastodon are great as well. Both Gojira and mastodon came out within the last 25 years or so and have roots in death metal, but mastodon certainly and Gojira to a lesser extent have moved away from that genre to prog if anything. Furthermore, you absolutely need to give the band camel a listen, if it’s not on video then whatever, their first album, sumplu called: camel, and their second: Mirage, are really excellent front to back, and will be a good change of pace from what you normally listen to. Blur sucks, and oasis are worse. What else did I want to say while I’m here, oh yeah you should listen to more zeppelin because you’re wrong 😂😂. Please listen to King Crimson as well!!! The court of the crimson king is seen widely as one of the best albums of all time, and I agree. It’s produced not amazingly, especially on epitaph, but I love how the drums sound, and have never understood why, so a breakdown on that I would love so much. Also listen to MF DOOM and Nothing But thieves. Anyway, glad to see you seem better and better spirited Patrick. Your impression of Mustaine grunting in front of an orchestra made me laugh like mad. See you around.
Okay Please React to the complete Rust in Peace album ( Original Version) and after that the Peace sells album and Killing is my business ^^ (Original version) :)
As a Megadeth and Megadave fan, to be honest can't even imagine that I could listen to these songs with different vocals. However I do struggle to listen to live stuff, but that's a different story...
They spent much time auditing 15 drummers, because they needed a good drummer, not just Lars. Rust in Peace is the best Thrash metal LP in history of the genre... Metallica - a successful band, Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift- are successful too. Thrash is an attitude, Metalica lost it in 1986...
IMO that papery, attackless snare on Rust In Peace makes the whole album sound like a demo. Which is puzzling to me because Guns N Roses got these massive sounding drums with the same guy (Mike Clink). I'm not sure if the sample they used for replacing the snare in the remix was the best choice but it does sound way better.
Some great ways to describe Dave mustaines singing voice… Vacuum cleaner enigma Gargling razor blades His voice was the hardest part of me to get used to, just listen to it over and over until you love it!
Man give them a chance, I know their old stuff is very much for only some people, it's a either you hate ir or love it type situation, but their recent albums like Dystopia and The Sick, The Dying and the Dead are full of awesome headbangers and are written well with better vocals than before.

I agree that Anthrax feels like the odd man out in current times, but the label 'Big Four' was given to Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax back when they were starting out. Each band was making killer albums and were at the top of thrash when it all began. Each paving the way for everyone that came after.
Dave Lombardo said he considered joining Megadeth in the 80s (after he left Slayer) but he thought they looked too unhealthy and were too heavily into the drugs. He didnt think it was right for him..
Good Metal in the mid 90s were Iced Earth or my fellow germans Blind Guardian and Running Wild, personally i love Judas Priests "Jugulator" Album from 1998
Anthrax are from New York and the big 4 is based on the first wave of thrash and the four best selling bands. Obviously Exodus and Testament, probably Overkill would have been a better fit musically
From the mid-90s on it didn't all go to butt rock and numetal, you're completely ignoring the rise of death, black, and a dozen other new genres of metal.
Next time you guys listen to megadeth you should listen to Night Stalkers, it's from theys newest album, and I think that it should be more in line from what you originaly expected them to sound like
You have to keep in mind how little money actually went into mixing and mastering the entire Peace Sells album. When a record company gives a check to 4 dudes with massive drug problems surprise most of the money went to drugs and not the album lol. That's also why the album is actually about a quarter step off of standard tuning. They couldn't afford a better/more accurate tuner lol.
Peace Sells is very much not representative of 80s Megadeth. It was a single for radio. Nothing else on the album sounds remotely like that.

Poisonous Shadows (Dystopia)
@@chief999 i was heavily debating putting poisonous shadows and back in the day on the list, but I figured that would be a lot of songs to listen to in one sitting
homie a audio engineer and he hasn’t heard of Lamb of God but knows Fear factory 💀💀
Wow excited to see Patrick's reaction to holy wars and the 2004 Remix. 🤘🤘🤘
If you want to hear melodies in the solos, listen to Youthanasia. That album is full of memorable melodies with the riffs and solos and vocals.
Crush 'Em is the only song that had Present Chris bobbing his head, which means that it's clearly the best one out of the six.
Clearly. 😆😆😆😆
Nightwish used to play Symphony of Destruction a lot so you probably knew the song through them.
Dave worked in record shop when he was 14 -15 .
Judas Priest , Motorhead , Led Zeppelin , Britain Punk , Cat Stevens ( his sister adore that singer ) , Iron Maiden , many more .( albums and cassette shop ! ) .
Wow…just wow.
Just check out what these guys enjoy… Shit that’s just random effects and the weirdest stuff
He got cancer years after Dystopia came out
Actually they tuned down because his voice was gone. Eventually he got diagnosed with cancer but he was already sounding pretty bad on live performances since 2013 or so
Boy oh boy
patrick, you're 100% correct with your observation that a lot of people really like their metal to sound relatively 'unpolished' and natural. and of course that goes even further with stuff like black metal and more crossover-y hardcore-influenced metal, etc. it's clear that that's not specifically what you look for in music, but i hope your appreciation for that kind of sound will grow...!
oh, and on that note: if you guys do some megadeth full album listens, i absolutely think you should START with rust in peace. most of their fans will agree that it's their best... though i would also recommend following up on that one with youthanasia, which has a much more midtempo, big, progressive and (i would say) polished sound--and with the same lineup!
I really like Endgame. I think they nailed it with that album. After that, their discography feels like a big blur to me.
Peace Sells was the intro theme of MTV News back in the late 80s-early 90s if you remember that or not.
For Anthrax, the Among the Living album is generally their Master of Puppets/Peace Sells/Reign in Blood
Thanks guys!
Dave’s voice has a signature sound. Too many bands started to sound the same towards the late 80’s.
Patrick would freak out over how morbid visions by sepultura sounds lol
Hello, long read ahead, so bear with me:
1) I have purposely neglected Megadeth's material because I am a Metallica fan but damn every now and then I come across hidden gems that make me enjoy much more of what they are and respect them even further.
-----Apple Music has all of the original mixes of Megadeth releases, but me living outside of the USA, I have a ease of access for me to get all versions, remasters, remixes and stuff similar to that of any band-----
4) We are sorry that Peace Sells left you a little disappointed to what Megadeth was and is at the beginning; Thrash and Speed Metal.
He says "its a little phglemy" - Has he seen how Mustaine warms up?
I loved the video can’t wait for pantera
Patrick, you may think your videos are a waste of time but they help me.through hard times, particularly with both Chrises.
Engineer in the middle, please shut up, listen, and then comment!!!
Thinks he's God's gift to music and a know it all.
If you're going to do anthrax (which i highly recommend!)
These are some song I suggest: Among the Living, Keep in in the Family, Caught in the Mosh, Indians, Be All End All, Skeleton in the Closet, Madhouse, and NFL just to name a few
That had their lead singer change, and then after some time, changed again back to the original singer - All of those classics above are also on an album called Greater of two evils, which features the alternate singer, instead of the original singer
Other songs I like that aren't necessarily among the classics: Fight 'em Till You Cant, The Giant, You Gotta Believe, and Crush (among others)
I don't get the people who complain about patrick commenting in throughout the song, if you want to listen to the song you can just pull it up and listen yourself. to be fair I do get what they're tryna say but at the same time I don't. that makes no sense but yes
Also can't wait for a slayer video (if there will be one in the future)
BEEN WAITING FOR THIS
IVE BEEN WAITTTTING THANK YOU !! hope all is Patrick glad to see you back
Very interesting video, thank you
I LOVE the production of the original Peace Sells album. It was the best Megadeth ever sounded on tape in my opinion. And the rawness is such a cool thing. I love recordings where you can hear those little thigs like pedal switches and fingers sliding on the strings.
Countdown to extinction and Youthanasia are the best produced and basically their black album and Load
You gotta do youthanasia album
Degrading rocks! I have been down since The Kids of Degrassi Degrassi Junior High was my favourite. “All the way with Stephanie K!” 😂😂😂
Megadeth piss all over Metallica from a great height.....
Symphony of Destruction was on the video game "FlatOut 2". I heard it from it. That game also have a lot of good rock songs too.
Anthrax is from NYC. They were instrumental in the early Jonny Z label, and were close with Metallica when they made the trip from CA.
Okay Please React to the complete Rust in Peace album ( Original Version) and after that the Peace sells album and Killing is my business ^^ (Original version) :)
in 2004 they Record all new! They lost the original Tapes (?)
Crush em is soooooooo underrated
IMO that papery, attackless snare on Rust In Peace makes the whole album sound like a demo. Which is puzzling to me because Guns N Roses got these massive sounding drums with the same guy (Mike Clink). I'm not sure if the sample they used for replacing the snare in the remix was the best choice but it does sound way better.
Some great ways to describe Dave mustaines singing voice…
Vacuum cleaner enigma
Gargling razor blades
His voice was the hardest part of me to get used to, just listen to it over and over until you love it!
Man give them a chance, I know their old stuff is very much for only some people, it's a either you hate ir or love it type situation, but their recent albums like Dystopia and The Sick, The Dying and the Dead are full of awesome headbangers and are written well with better vocals than before.
These comments are gonna be lit
Do the whole Rust In Peace album
@@maratb2684 based on how surprisingly great this video is doing, right now my plan is to do the entire Rust in Peace album and maybe check out their newest album as well sometime in the future!
Can’t wait for this!!
Yes - do Ghost next!
At no point would I have expected Patrick to really get into Megadeth (I'm only part way through, maybe he likes the newer stuff), but his take on Mauro Renallo is way off. Mauro is an excellent announcer.
@@totopoul man I just do not agree with that at all! I've heard a lot of people say that they really like him but to me it just sounds like he's mocking announcing.
Bro how can anyone think the 2004 remaster of rust in peace is better than the original
Dystopia was the first album with Kiko Loureiro on guitar leads, he is a brazilian guitar player, you guys should hear Angra, his former and co-founder band, heavy metal/power metal band, a hug from Brazil guys!! Check Sepultura to!!!!
lets go been waiting for this
I can't believe you don't like daves angry Donald Duck vocals. For shame.
Feels like you went into this thinking "let's make sure we shit on this band as much as possible".
Sound engineers? More like a bunch of clowns 🤡
THANK YOU!
From the mid-90s on it didn't all go to butt rock and numetal, you're completely ignoring the rise of death, black, and a dozen other new genres of metal.
Next time you guys listen to megadeth you should listen to Night Stalkers, it's from theys newest album, and I think that it should be more in line from what you originaly expected them to sound like
1:28:30 i might have missed it, but did you post a pink floyd reaction? or is it coming out soon?
You have to keep in mind how little money actually went into mixing and mastering the entire Peace Sells album. When a record company gives a check to 4 dudes with massive drug problems surprise most of the money went to drugs and not the album lol. That's also why the album is actually about a quarter step off of standard tuning. They couldn't afford a better/more accurate tuner lol.
I'm a HUGE MetallicA fan, but I LOVE Megadeth - favorite album Youthanasia 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
Favorite era - Friedman & Menza 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
Mauro is one of the best commentators ever
Cmon, guys. You're gonna hear " Metallica" riffs. Dave was one of the founding members of Metallica. Some of the Metallica riffs are Dave's riffs.
