    • How To Morning Sauna J...
In the pursuit of peak performance, we’re constantly told that pushing our minds and bodies to their limits requires strict adherence to advice dished out by your average, middle of the bell curve, so called "professionals". But what if new unconventional approaches could actually propel us beyond what we think is possible? Unconventional, yet grounded in esoteric old world wisdom, informed by modern science and facilitated by technology!
As a pioneering computer hacker in the 1990s, I appreciate the power of thinking differently. Where others see obstacles, I see exciting challenges and awesome opportunities - to understand the true nature of ourselves and our reality. This maverick spirit has served me well in cybersecurity for decades, but breaking the rules and hacking "wetware", the very substrate that makes us who we are has been a neverending fun rabbit hole to keep spellunking through! And I'm not done. Perhaps the best is yet to come. Screw the proverbial "iron rice bowls" I say!
The hacker mindset, applied it to optimize human performance through the OG biohacking we know today as "internal arts", adapting traditional methods from Eastern practices like Tai Chi, Neigong, Qigong to modern circumstances and opportunities, guided by both Eastern and Western spiritual traditions of self inquiry, prayer and surrender, I've worked out tons of fun ways to keep me entertained and push the boundaries of what the body and mind are capable of achieving. Plus it is fun to share these toys with friends like we used to share 0days back in the day 😉
Here, I outline my current "morning protocol” - 30 minutes in an infrared sauna, cooling down for 10, then another 20 minutes in the sauna followed by a magnesium jacuzzi bubble bath while working on all sorts of internal release, opening and Chi (yeah, I said Chi 🤪) stuff the whole time. It is awesome to start the day after a quiet inward looking sit at 3am and fun culinary adventures to get you ready for this.
The infrared sauna raises core temperature, increasing blood flow and circulation. Sports scientists have long known improved circulation enhances endurance, power and recovery. But Eastern traditions like Neigong have understood this for centuries - seeing the movement of Chi and blood as a key to health, longevity and peak performance.
The idea is to have the this session mimic the effects of heavy duty cardiovascular exercise without the joint and muscle strain. As his body warms, Chi cultivation exercises allow me to consciously direct Chi, blood flow and lymphatic and cerebrospinal fluid movement for therapeutic effects, while stimulating the nervous system and releasing the mind and the body. The magnesium jacuzzi bath then aids further relaxation and recovery, absorbing into cells to relieve tension and stress, setting you up for a day of ressitance training based internal work and martial arts training.
Infrared saunas have been shown to decrease inflammation, lower blood pressure and improve heart health. Magnesium supports muscle and nerve function while aiding relaxation. And flow states induced through Chi cultivation correlate with boosted cognitive performance, physical capacity and pain management. Sort of hacking my way to the benefits of intense mental and physical training with fewer drawbacks. And the results have been dramatic - from enhanced workouts, relief from chronic conditions, but most importantly, better quality of life through improved mental and physical performance.
The truth is, most of the naysayers simply aren’t open-minded enough to consider approaches outside their preconceptions and past experience. Conventional wisdom often lags true innovation in the practice of both ancient modern sciences. The most impactful advances sometimes require thinking differently and being unafraid to challenge the perceived norms.
If we’re being honest, many dismiss rigorous training in the internal arts due to laziness, both physical and intellectual - not science. These methods demand consistent effort, focus, and refinements, which require phenomenal grit, traits not everyone possesses, especially these days. But for those willing to dedicate the time sincerely, the payoffs could be tremendous - from boosted mental clarity to overall enhanced well-being.
The only thing we stand to lose is our perceived limits!
