My first bike was 249cc from Yamaha R25 which is equivalent to R3. I was involved in accident in 2017 with that bike and I claimed total loss from insurance. So, in May 2022, I placed down payment for CBR500R. At first I was comparing both 500 & 650 and I was thinking 650 was too big for me. Along the way while waiting for the 500 stock to come in, someone in my WhatsApp group was telling to my other friend that if he want to upgrade, he will be looking for 4 cylinder bike. So, I was looking at the video and even try to sit on one used 650R, that got me thinking, I can get this bike by adding a few more thousand to upgrade now than later on I need to fork out more later if I want to upgrade. So I change my mind and order 650R. I got my 650R last 2 weeks and man do I love it. The sound and handling plus the power! So this video of yours somehow support my idea of upgrade my purchase even though it came in later after my decision. Thanks for the video.
Bought a 650r this year new as my first bike. Had little experience with shifting on race quad a decade ago but apart from that brand new rider. 8k miles this year put on and it’s great. Displacement difference isn’t much between the two bikes but the 650 has double the power still lol and that’s a huge point. If your mature , relatively quick learner and seem to naturally have skill towards these type of things it’s perfectly fine as a starter bike. Wasn’t long at all before I was wide open constantly. Wish I had a litre bike or something along the lines of a gixxer 750 but it’s still plenty of power for road use and is fun because you can actually use it. Either way love the bike all around. Commuted to work every day and then as able to have fun on weekends. Quite versatile for my needs

What is the fuel consumption difference? I've heard that CBR500r use about 3,7l per 100km and CBR650r 4,9l per 100km. I wonder which bike should I choose, but for me it's only for commutation and I don't want to exceed the speed limit :). Both bike for me looks great
I don't remember the exact figures but the 500r is cheaper/ more fuel efficient, and is a better commuter bike in general than the 650r. The 500r is in a more commute friendly position and when you ride economically you really conserve alot of fuel. I didn't notice that much on the 650r.
I'm on this same boat right now. I've had my 500r for 3k miles and debating on getting the 650. You were spot on, the 500 definitely wins in the looks department.
How long did you have the 500 and how long have you had the 650? It took me some time to appreciate this bike after much more powerful bikes, which are too much for the road, with so many cameras about not to mention traffic volumes. Times have changed and people don't buy the litre super sports bikes like they used to.
Had the 500 for 3 years, I've had the 650r for just over a month. I agree that the 650r is more than enough for the road and nothing more is needed. I'm just being honest when I say people might want something bigger than a 650r because that is my experience, I wish it had a little more power but I am still very content with my purchase. Within the next few weeks i'm gonna make a video on why I chose the 650r in detail.
Nice video but I think you understated the difference between these two bikes in terms of power and acceleration. The CBR650R is a very fast bike and the acceleration is excellent when it's opened up properly. To put it in perspective the CBR650R gets from 0-60mph in about 3.5s compared to the CBR500R of about 5.5s. The pull and scream of the engine from about 7k onwards is totally unique to a 4 cylinder bike. Riding one is a completely different experience than a twin cylinder 500. It's like comparing apples and pears. If you love the thrill of acceleration you'll be bored of a 500 twin in no time at all.
Yeah the difference between them is bigger than I made it sound in the video. I was trying to find a balanced way of saying that it is much faster but not that much faster to warrant going from a 500r to a 650r. Either skip the 500r all together and go straight to the 650r or get the 500r then skip the 650r to something bigger. the 500r to 650r jump is not as rewarding as I personally hoped. BUT!!! that being said my 500r topped out at 112mph...my 650r could do that in 3rd gear 🤣🤣. So by no means am I calling the 650r slow.
Would it be more sensible to begin with a 35kw throttled 650r as a first bike for A2 reasons and open it up later, or would you still say isnt a good idea?
Great video man. Iv got 2018 cbr500ra black/white and red. Love the bike. Clocked over 5k miles on it in less than 10month. I did a DAS and had the option to learn on 6oo or 750. I chooses the 600 but bought the 500. I will upgrade to the cbr650. I don't think il need anymore than 650 to be honest.
Awesome, yeah if you love the 500r you will be more than happy with the 650r. But yeah I know what you mean I loved my 500 too, still miss it to be honest. Also you ride a lot like me......i put over 5k miles on my 650r in less than 6 months 🤣.
Hi bro! Does these bikes suits for me a 55 yr old man 5'7" in height. Which one will you recommend b/w 500r & 650r. I am planning to buy a 650r in the future as a first big bike, currently riding a 125cc motorcycle. Thank you.
I would suggest the 500r. It's a little bit lighter, and more comfy than the 650r. The only reason to get the 650r is for more power and the nice inline 4 sound......BUT! If you are going to buy a 650r at some point in the future anyway then don't bother with the 500 and go straight to the 650r.
This video was very helpful! I'd like buy a first motorcycle and I'm falling in love with CBR but I don't know if i could try with 650 or if it's better start with 500. Later this video i find a solution, i have to definitely start with 500 which I'll learn and join this experience. Thank you ! 😜💪
Both bikes are very good, so you can't go wrong either way. But yes I agree with you, start on the 500 and get experience. And I wish you all the best on your riding journey 😁.
How about me ? I have a 600 F4i and im selling it in a few weeks but im at the point as my budget is either a 500R 2020 or a 2003-2004 600rr. I love the sound and im fearing the difference in power as i am used with my f4i but at the same time i want something newer and with abs . I fear the fact that i will buy a 500 and not liking the power even if i need a more comfortable and manevrable bike
That is a hard one. You want good power and newer features like ABS. If your choice is strictly between those two bikes then i would say go for the power. Get the 600rr. You will miss the fun and power more than you will miss rider aids 🤣.
Good job putting it together nice to see the two compared, i was trying to make up my mind between 500r, 650r and Kawasaki ninja 400, i think 500r will be my pick after the research i've done, 2nd being the ninja 400 and 3rd the 650r, as a person who didn't ever go on a bike .
Yeah, I would suggest either the ninja 400 or the 500r. You can't go wrong with either of them. The 500r is a big bike (in size and weight though) so maybe the 400 is better as it will be easier to handle. But again........both are great. Thanks for watching 😁😁.
Good video on the comparisons. I recently passed my A licence (I did the DAS course in Maidstone) and the 650r will be my first ever bike. I have had reservations, but everyone is telling me it's fine for a first ever bike and I should be fine considering I did my test on the 650f. I'm not after anything too powerful (and I think anything more than this would be a big mistake), but rather something that I can use as a daily, but falls within the "sports bike" style. I placed my order in July 22 and I'm still waiting for delivery sadly. I hope to get it soon as I can't wait to get out riding.
That's great!!! A shame the delivery is taking so long, but you are really in for some fun when you eventually get it. I think it's great you are getting a 650 as your first bike. If you are responsible and confident then it will be fine, especially after doing the DAS course I would say you are more than ok. Keep us posted on how you like the bike when you get it. And thanks for watching :).
Good question! Overall the 500r is more comfortable IF......AND ONLY IF....you change that horrible seat. The 650r has a better seat, other than that the 500r takes it in terms of comfort. At 6-7k rpms the 650r vibrates more than you would like, which sucks because that is a sweet spot to cruise in. It pains me to put the 500r above the 650r in this scenario though because the engine in the 650r is really great and would lend it self to a much better ride. If only it were more comfy lol.
coming from a 125, they have the option of getting the 650 restricted until they get some miles behind them and then have the 650 de-restricted [2 bikes in one]
The 650 is capable of producing 95HP "AT 1400RPM" BUT you are rarely AT 14000RPM Below 5000RPM it goes like a 250 between 5000 and 7000 it goes like a 500 between 7 and 8000 it goes like a 650 from 9000 onwards it goes like a 750 and so on. NOT fun IMHO.
Nice one man. To me the 500r doesn't make much sense when the Ninja 400 exists, especially in 2024 when the Ninja 500 will exist with even more torque. I guess that's the reason the Ninja sells so well, but of course the 500r apparently has it's own crowd. I'm torn between the Ninja 500 and the CBR650R myself, although that's a sweet headache to have, if such a thing exists.
If you passed your test on a big bike confidently, then you will be fine on a 650r for your first bike. But if you have had no training and no experience on a bike then a 650r might be too much.
i life in austria and making rn the a2 license this is for bikes up to 48 hp, so i want to buy the 650r than restrict it for 2 years to 48 hp and than ride it open for a few years you think this is a good idea?(i already have biking experience) thanks for your great videos
Yes that is a good idea, it will give you time to get used to the bike and then when you derestrict it you will feel like you have a new bike 🤣. Cheaper than buying two different bikes.
Do you mean cbr250r (29hp) or cbr250rr (40hp)? Because either way I would say you could skip the 500r completely and go straight to the 650r or any 600cc. If it is the cbr250rr (40hp) don't even bother with the 500r, it won't be much of a difference. I would suggest something bigger. Unless you are dead set on getting the 500r then I wouldn't stop you, it is a very good bike, and you would have that little extra power and that big bike look and feel. But if it is within your means I would say get something bigger than the 500r.
@@tvtwistasmoto Haha my biggest thing i i love the black with red color on the cbr 500 2018-2021 but ig i could always replace the fairings. Im not thing to go super fast just enough for the highway at the end of the day. But i do think the 500 engine would feel smol.
@@ohmpatel6253 The 500r handles the highway easily. And the bike feels big amd planted, to be honest it's way to big and heavy for a 500 🤣. You just won't be winning a lot of races.

Full Akrapovic Titanium Exhaust with no db killer. Well i think there is still a sound suppressor deep in the body of the exhaust but the one on the tip has been removed.
@@tvtwistasmoto ok thanks but i guess you are british right? so how did you take the DB killer out? i think the Euro4 exhausts have a permanently installed DB killer so hoch did you handle this?
@@alex_rr81 I didn't do it, I got the bike with the exhaust already fitted and db killer removed. Sadly you have to do some surgery and cut the db killer out because as you said, it is permanently installed. I'm fairly certain that the YT channel 'CBR650R UK' has a video showing how he does it. The only other option I guess is to get the race version of the exhaust which is well......not legal.....but don't worry, I won't tell if you don't XD.
I have a '22 CBR650R (113 miles ODO) and a '23 Grom I kitted to go 90mph (439 miles ODO). These are my first motorcycles. Although the CBR650R is indeed very sexy and makes a wonderful scream on the throttle, it is Not a beginners bike. It is a "beginner" bike if you're entering into this cc range with a sports bike though considering it handles very mannered when you want it to but can scream on demand too. However, at 420LBish, almost half the weight of a small car (Le Car De Luxe?), it is very heavy and mistakes will be amplified as a beginner with the heavy weight of this. My Grom is definitely more fun to ride as I can do more with it, but my CBR650R is the clear winner for spirited straight shots. As well, do not be fooled either, you won't be beating other bikes in this weight class without mods... In retrospect I think I should have started slightly smaller in weight. I highly recommend people start on a Grom or a Rebel and move up from there if you want more speed, or just upgrade the Grom. It's a blast to mob around on 🙂 Stay safe kids!
Bikes closer to 455 lbs or so actually with full fluids.. but did you say 420lbs is almost half the weight of a smaller car? You do realize even the lightest smart car is 1500lbs. With most small sedans being around 3k+ .. though I seen the car de Lux comment so not really sure what kind of guidelines your using lol
Definitely the CBR650. More cruising power with ease. For just starting motorcycles, start with a , 125....250 or a 300cc. I started with a dual purpose 250 cc a long time ago. 250 cc and 300 cc dual purpose bikes are light and easy to move around and teach skills without having to fight the weight. Make sure you are comfortable on the bike whatever you choose. Definitely learn how to drive a smaller , lighter motorcycle for a while before you move up to a larger, more powerful motorcycle.
First bike I ever rode and learned on was cbr1000rr my cousin owns. Im aware of my limitations and I’m pretty mellow of a rider so I didn’t have a problem learning on it. I’m about to get the 650r soon as my first bike.
Yeah, you are right the 650r is significantly faster, especially when comparing the stats. The point I was trying to make in the video is that when actually riding a cbr650r it does not feel A LOT faster than a 500r. So if someone has a 500r and wants a much faster bike or is craving more speed, I would not suggest they only go up to a 650r, I think they would enjoy the extra power from a faster bike than the 650r. But besides all of that, yes, the 650r is for sure a faster bike than the 500 no question. Which is why i'm happy on the 650r, it was a big enough jump in speed and power to satisfy me 🙂.
True. The 500's power is all torque, no top end. And the 650's is mostly top end, not so much torque. So in the lower gears i wasn't impressed with the 650 and that's why i said there isn't a big difference in power. BUT!!!! once you get in to the power band of the 650.....then yes it is bloody night and day 🤣🤣.....huge difference!

Awesome, yeah if you love the 500r you will be more than happy with the 650r. But yeah I know what you mean I loved my 500 too, still miss it to be honest. Also you ride a lot like me......i put over 5k miles on my 650r in less than 6 months 🤣.
@@tvtwistasmoto lol just a cbr thing haha. Ride safe man
I needed this video!
Good video, quick question, I have a cbr 500r and want to get a 650r, is the one your riding restricted?
Nope.
@@tvtwistasmoto I'm 192cm 6'4" so a bigger bike isn't really a problem 😂
@@ornatehammer661 Oh.......then yeah.......get the 500!!! 🤣
Which one is recommended for long tours in terms of vibration and comfort?
Good point actually!
I have come down in power to a cbr500r , the 500 has usable power through out the whole rev range without loosing your license lol
True..........but........you can still for sure lose your licence on the 500 🤣🤣.
The 650 is capable of producing 95HP "AT 1400RPM" BUT you are rarely AT 14000RPM
Below 5000RPM it goes like a 250 between 5000 and 7000 it goes like a 500 between 7 and 8000 it goes like a 650 from 9000
onwards it goes like a 750 and so on. NOT fun IMHO.
Not gonna lie i'm not sure i follow what you are saying. But.......it feels very fun to ride at least.
Ninja 500???? 🤯🤯
@@tvtwistasmoto Oh yes, great just got better.
Though it's a 451cc, not an actual 500cc but the extra torque will be great!
Thanks for letting me know, looks like I have some research to do :)@@christosswc
I'm on a FB mondial. Done my research. Its looks like the next step in the CBR650 then the H2
Whats your thoughts?
I have never heard of FB mondial, i will look in to them. But if the end goal is a H2 then go for it XD.
Great review thanks I’ve just passed my full test and was wondering about the differences. I was wondering if the 650 was bit big as a first bike.
If you passed your test on a big bike confidently, then you will be fine on a 650r for your first bike. But if you have had no training and no experience on a bike then a 650r might be too much.
@@tvtwistasmoto
Thanks I take your point but it’s more the style of the bike and what it does, I passed on a Suzuki SV650 which wouldn’t be as fast.
i life in austria and making rn the a2 license this is for bikes up to 48 hp, so i want to buy the 650r than restrict it for 2 years to 48 hp and than ride it open for a few years you think this is a good idea?(i already have biking experience)
thanks for your great videos
Yes that is a good idea, it will give you time to get used to the bike and then when you derestrict it you will feel like you have a new bike 🤣. Cheaper than buying two different bikes.
@@tvtwistasmoto ok thanks
Should I upgrade from my 250rr to 500r? I would like to know your opinion please.
@@tvtwistasmoto Yes I mean the 250rr(40hp). Thank you and appreciate your suggestion.
@@HeinHtetAungJames No prob, all the best on whatever you decide 😎.
looking for a good A2 bike since I can’t get A yet. The 500r is pretty convincing
Honestly.....you can't go wrong with either of these bikes. It comes down to do you want the parallel twin or the inline 4?
I'm considering going from a ninja 400 to the 650. Just don't know if I wanna wait for the R9.
Wait for the R9! 🤣.
Does the seat from a 650 fit on a 500?? I have a 2022 500R, I absolutely love it
I'm not sure to be honest. If i find out more i'll let you know. I don't think so though.
Thanks for the video. Makes clear to me I will go for a Ducati Pannigale :)
Well played 😎.
I got a 650 Kawasaki Vulcan but i’m looking to get a CBR 500 would they be similar or am i going to think the cbr is really slow?
The 500 is slower, not way slower but it will be noticeable. If you are worried about speed and power don't bother with the 500.
Thanks for the replies man i’ll definitely let you know what i end up doing. I’m just going to be on the street so I just want a bike that i’ll enjoy plus i have a lot to learn. I’ll have to find a place to test ride.
Do you have a db killer in? Or is it stock?
Nice video! Love all the info. Maybe I want to trade my MT03 for a CBR500R.
Interesting! I wouldn't have thought there was much difference between a mt03 and a 500r. Why 500 instead of 650? Just curious.
Wow best view in your cam bro ❤❤❤
Thanks 🙂.

It's a blast to mob around on 🙂
Stay safe kids!
That grom sounds so fun!!!
I agree!!!! 100%
First bike I ever rode and learned on was cbr1000rr my cousin owns. Im aware of my limitations and I’m pretty mellow of a rider so I didn’t have a problem learning on it. I’m about to get the 650r soon as my first bike.
@@MoparMadness93 Respect!!!
There's a 180 cc difference. And the 650 is way faster. And almost 55 more hp with after market mods. Way more power bob
Very few people are at the point that they cannot learn anything more and need more than a 500cc bike.
Correct!! I should have phrased it better. I always watch my videos back and think.......why did I say that?
I got a 650 for my first bike and I’m loving it
650 all day everyday!
looking to get a 650c. and all i can hear is HMMMMMMMMMMM MONEY 😂😂😂
🤣🤣🤣. Well....the money is one of the biggest differences between them.
The 650
Indeed.
Honda just be putting the cbr name on anything...smh
🤣
Hi bro❤
One hand riding really turns me off 😢
Years of commuting on a sports bike, i got used to it to give my back a break from being bent over all the time, bad habbit i know 😅.
Ninja
🤣
I own both, the difference is night and day.......
Double your horse power and go from a relatively torquey twin to a frantic 4 cyclinder…
Well said........I should have just said that 🤣. Good summary!
