Not just did he write 250,000 words in 5 weeks - he says he only used the library computer for 1 hr a day. So that means he wrote 250,000 words in 35 hours.
The only way the time frame could even kind of make sense with the story he told is if he was handwriting the story on paper and using that one hour/day to simply type what he'd written -- but that's not the story he told. This is just another of his lies that falls down when you think about the logistics for more than a minute.
That's 120 words per minute. For some reason "he lied" seems like a more likely explanation lol

My partner showed me a few of his tweets where he was out walking his cat wearing a pink dress in a pram. it's fascinating to me how despite all his stories about having this harrowing traumatic past and mountains of baggage, he seems almost impervious to actual trauma. motherfucker was the sole survivor of a murder-suicide and came very close to being killed. any normal person would probably be permanently altered by that experience, but aside from adding britney's death to his arsenal of tragic backstories to exploit, his behavior and general demeanor was completely unchanged. his capacity to just roll with every single punch and be completely unaffected by traumatic events while simultaneously portraying himself as some unfailingly strong perpetual victim to garner sympathy at every turn is fucking bananas.
This is so true. He feels like someone whose learned that being traumatized can garner him sympathy, but he does not seem to be genuinely emotionally affected by it. It feels calculated.
It’s like he has to make the trauma so wretched and unrealistic (both in his fanfics and in his lies) because he cannot gauge empathy levels. It’s like he thinks people need to hear the VERY WORST THING EVER to feel something. Makes sense why he would milk such a terrifying tragedy after Brittany’s death.

I was with a partner who had me fully cult-locked using all these same techniques as Andy. He outright stated he was impervious to trauma.
While I'm not overly fond of giving credence to Jeannine, as she seems like a pretty overall vile person, I think she is genuinely correct that Andy is sociopathic. I've bounced back and forth on narcissism and sociopathy, but so much of the treatment of Brittany's story felt completely detached from any understanding of genuine grief or sympathy that I think I'm now pretty firmly in camp sociopathy.

Jeanine trying to blame the murder on Andy is SO distasteful. Incidents like that the most common ways that women are murdered, by their own intimate partners/exes. Especially during divorce/separation proceedings or simply trying to get away from the abusive partner. That isn't to say either party has it worse, just that the statement he makes manages to forget a probably very significant portion of abuse victims (who hey could include some of his victims considering how he has put himself in charge of finances in the past isn't that wild)

Because he was. That's the thing about Andy, whatever else he's doing, he's always a prospective cult leader first and foremost. He did it first in the LotR fandom, on a relatively small scale (only ruining four lives), and then used his experiences from that to try it on a much bigger scale with DAYD. The one good thing about how horribly it blew up is that now enough people all around the internet know that he can't do it a third time.
I've known and worked with so many artists who describe the creative process as something akin to "channeling", but always ground it in the very real feeling of being caught up in the flow of creative energy when you're so focused and invested on a project that it's almost meditative. Yeah the “Channeling” thing that Andy did was creepy and weird (like everything else he did). Channeling for me is feeling the things I’m writing about and getting into the mind of the characters, but it doesn’t go outside of writing.
I've never heard of "Channeling" used like this, but it makes sense! I tend to think of writing as akin to "acting" myself, since it feels like I'm quite literally stepping into the shoes of the characters.

Learning "that one HP fanfic that I quite liked despite (and at times because of) its grimdark tone" was written by THIS DUDE really makes me feel like that trope of a custodian mopping the floor obliviously while a bunch of action goes down behind them. UTTERLY WILD!!!

So I'm no longer into HP fandom for The Obvious Reason but I did spork Andy's DAYD fic back in the day for this HP community (it's what we used to call it when you went through someone's fic and made fun of it MST3K style.) Only did this because I knew Andy was a POS so I wasn't worried about hurting his feelings. Andy even emailed me telling me he didn't mind did I want to talk etc. and I emailed him back saying he needed to stop hurting people. No response. It's NOT a good fic, prose very purple, here are some highlights of the wild shit:
-Managed to be possibly even worse on race than the actual HP books which is a feat. Suddenly every character of color was whatever their racial stereotype was- The Patil twins were really into yoga and had yoga and snake based magic! Li Su mentions that she totally gets their yoga and tea stuff because "the mountains between India and China are not so vast" (what??? WHAT??). This also extended to national stereotypes- with Scottish Ernie suddenly being a very violent angry person and Irish Seamus of course getting drunk all the time.
-Extremely misogynistic which should surprise no one. Girls were constantly described as "fragile" and "dainty", and a lot of emphasis was put on how manly the guys were, all the girls suddenly had the same personality, mildly sassy but swooning over the boys and also literally cleaning up after them and making them shower.
-There was a plotline where Lavender Brown got r**ed by Crabbe and Goyle, and of course it was entirely focused on the boys reaction to this and their hardcore vengance crusade, with no exploration of her feelings. They just ended up breaking their fingers and vaguely threatening them so it wasn't even cool revenge. Lavender is then graphically killed at the end of the fic (the movies later killed her off too but the books weren't clear either way).
-Hannah, Neville's gf in the fic, is described as chubby in the actual books. Of course Thanfiction had it turn out that it was her robes that were making her (and no one else?) look fat and she had a supermodel's body. Nevile, also chubby, is now super jacked with chiseled abs and is so embarrassed he used to be fat. It's very funny that he scorns girls for their Mary Sues while using the exact same tropes, also that he was angling to live up to Rowling's fatphobia.
-He had these two boys who were obsessed with each other and wore each other's clothes and had MATCHING TATTOOS and did everything together, clearly bait for the M/M shippers but he acted FURIOUS when those "empty headed" girls shipped them, forbade people from using "his" characters, and said they didn't understand how deep and special male friendship was and how it could never measure up to relationships stupid women have.
-The gays did NOT kiss in actual DAYD, that is not true, maybe in the sequels or a side story though. What did happen was he decided Dean Thomas was gay and tragically in love with to his straight bff Seamus, he tells Seamus this and Seamus responds by calling him a bunch of homophobic slurs, and then Dean dies in the Battle of Hogwarts and Seamus gets to tragically angst about it. Recall that Dean is one of the few Black characters in HP too.
-There was a plotline where they included Slytherins in the DA and just forgave them constantly calling everyone HP's made-up slurs, Neville literally tells someone to calm down when they get mad about it. This is pretty OOC because the HP books, for all their flaws, always had everyone go ballistic on Malfoy and beat the shit out of him for doing that, so. uh. i guess that was Thanfiction's addition.
-Snape for some reason was constantly trying to murder Neville and other students despite the fact he was supposed to be secretly on their side, it made no sense. Snape sucks but the podcaster was right, his actions were inexplicable just because Thanfiction needed a Voldemort like antagonist.
-For the record, there weren't a lot of traditional OCs, he just took minor characters who were only mentioned once or twice and made them his own. and by his own I mean bad.
-In the sequel, Hermione is r**ed in front of Ron, then dies while having a demon baby. yeah.

I remember the stuff about Neville having a breakdown from having Too Much Main Character Energy and being shut out of the DA, which as a 13/14 year old I found very cringe. Even more cringe were any and all romance scenes. (The whole fic also comes to a screeching halt for an extended Gretna Green elopement and M&S shopping trip, and I seem to recall Neville and Ernie being very Weird about muggle women wearing short skirts)

I am kinda gutted that you won't get into the spn-era bullshit he pulled because he was absolutely trying to start another cult around him there (and was definitely succeeding to a slight extent). It might not be quite as well known because a lot of the people he effected just didn't want to go into it too much after the fact (me being one of them, sort-of). He definitely attempted to start talking about 'channelling' Castiel and leaned heavily into the spn angel lore. It meshed well with his own brand of crazy. He also then did try and put on a spn-themed LARP which got shut down almost as soon as it was mentioned because everyone went: oh hell no, you've done this sort of thing before and it's what ultimately got him chased out of the fandom.
If you do ever want to talk about that era, feel free to hit me up. I can definitely tell you who to get in touch with outside of myself. So many of the things you mention here were echoed at later dates with the spn fandom.

i can't speak for anyone else, but personally i've never bought that andy totally quit the channeling shit. i figured he'd just gotten sneakier because he's aware of how it's perceived from the outside. and many people following andy's shenanigans these days are infinitely more sympathetic to his victims than the fandom wank crowd and a lot more respect for their privacy.
i totally understand why most people don't want to shared something like that with the whole internet. but assuming strange doesn't make a video, i hope you consider sharing your experience in some other way. i think many people are able to dismiss andy's history because the bit of earth and dayd sagas were so extreme and heavily documented but happened 10-20 years ago, and therefore one can tell themselves it's mostly just been gossip about interpersonal drama. i do worry about his significant twitter following that encompasses some really vulnerable communities, and i think confirmation that he was doing the same shit post-dayd would warn at least some people away.

ed: just adding this for some context about his current following. andy says he has long covid, which is totally plausible although given his history of lying about medical conditions i'd take it with a bit of salt. either way, it's definitely become his newest thing and i think a significant portion of his following is made up of people with long covid and/or are immunocompromised or otherwise particularly at risk and probably have been very isolated for a few years. and given this is the same guy who "channeled" doctors and gave a woman back alley toe surgery, i think there's some real concern about what he might try to pull in that community in the future given many are isolated, suffering from a long term illness we still know very little about and don't really know how to treat, and are probably suffering financially from it as well (he tweets and retweets a lot of mutual aid stuff).

I hadn’t actually connected the dots between Andy and the DAYD fic I read when I was deep in fandom as a kid (read part of the fic but never got into the fandom around it) and I gotta say, there’s so much to mad at about this guy and all the lives he’s harmed and ruined, but I gotta say, as someone who’s Choctaw native, l actually started shaking a little with how pissed I am that he picked the Trail as part of his pseudo charity. Not only did he make the loss of actual real human life about himself and his fandom drama, but he used a piece of an actual ongoing genocide against indigenous people for that purpose as well. The abuse and murder our mothers and sisters go through to this day is horrific, but he couldn’t even bother to mention that history as he used in his weird fake crusade for women. I feel like his whiteness is a weird unspoken through-line in his weird “power” speech, his glorification of abuse, and his self obsession at the expense of dignity for the real lives lost.

The Andy Awareness blogs especially have been chronicalling this story for years now and they especially deserve recognition. And as someone who likes nothing more than to delve into ancient internet history and archives, I also think it is very important to preserve. With archives and search being as they are, that often means urls. I really enjoy these videos a lot and I think it would make them better. Thanks for considering!

Yes! Especially considering recent events, a list of sources would be great. I think Strange has always been fairly transparent about main sources but it'd still be great to see and be able to dive into them ourselves.

I did, but I also feel that this conversation on YT is long overdue. These vids (the other one even more so than Hbomb's I think) merely pointed out egregious examples of why sourcing is so important. Not every subject is equally important, of course, so there can be a variety of approaches, but sloppiness quickly bleeds into stuff that does matter. When so many people regard various yt'ers as real journalists, the necessity for some kind of standard of practice becomes evident. With Strange's video I think it's just a good thing to do, both for archival and credit reasons, and it would be a valuable addition to the story
His habit of co opting the identities of fictional and primarily male characters is so interesting to me and like. brings me back to my days in the fictionkin community when i was like 13. like pretending to be the boys you want to be and making up some stuff (at least i was) about past lives to validate yourself and feel confident as a man. I guess andy is what happens when a young trans guy in that situation is also a manipulative sociopathic garbage weiner.

I think you're right in saying this. It kind of reminds me of the J.T. LeRoy scandal, if you know anything about that (if not, please look it up, it's a bonkers story - the tl;dr is this woman(?) made a fictional persona and wrote "semi-autobiographical" work as him, and rather than just admit to it, she got her sibling-in-law to "play" him in public). Like I think everyone involved in that enjoyed inhabiting this male persona, at least at little bit, and part of my fascination with stories like this is in this thought I have - which is admittedly jealous and probably a bit unhealthy - of wishing that I also had a male persona that people would believe and take seriously as a man.
I suspect it's not uncommon for some transmascs, if they're in the stages of either questioning their gender, or of being sure about it but not feeling like they can actualise it in a physical space, to experiment with taking on male personas or avatars. I really don't think it's a problem to "pretend" like that, or, to some extent or another, invent yourself anew online - I weirdly don't think it was even a problem of Andy to try and disassociate himself with his pre-transition identity, even though he went about it in the most batshit way possible. Like we live in such a transphobic society, if claiming to be a guy who happens to look like Harry Potter is the best way to cope with that then who cares!
The problem isn't that he co-opted fictional identities, I think, it's that Andy's an abusive wanker who used his stories to abuse people's trust - but I think some people focus too much on how "weird" this desire for a persona is, and ignore the reasons why he's actually not a good person.
I think in his case it wasn’t even about him truly identifying with the characters and believing himself to be them because he quickly just drops them and their fandoms at a moments notice when it doesn’t serve him, and his fan works are so ooc it’s almost like he doesn’t even like the source material that much . I think he just sees the adoration that the characters receive from fans and thinks he wants that power for himself so tries to convince others he is that character or like that character . He also very much tries to shape his public perception off of just checking the boxes of what an admirable person is “supposed” to be in a similar way .

He's getting older now, too old to fake being in his early 20s, just a wide-eyed kid entering fandom for the very first time, so uwu and gung-ho. Since he is aging out of being able to get close to teens and young people without raising serious red flags, his BS gets called out a lot sooner than is was in the past.

He actually was an absolute jerk to one of the hosts, another jumped off before the interview was done, and the editor could hardly finish going through this episode. You know who he really reminds me of? Charles Manson. The need to gather followers for the sake of having power over people, the incorporation of pop culture into his cult mythos, putting followers in extreme wilderness settings to break them down, the exploitation and abuse of vulnerable women, the interest in getting close to celebrities, it's all Manson. It's kind of a creepy mirror of how this kind of abuse plays out in two different cultural moments: the 60's counter culture vs the early years of online fandom culture.
Me and my sister sat and watched this and genuinely noted that there was some STRONG Manson energy to this guy's work, so it's nice at least to see I'm not alone in this. He really keeps trying to reform cults in whatever fandom he enters, permanently power-brained monster this one.

Just to say, 'Hannah' is not an OC by Andy. Hannah Abbott is a Hufflepuff and Neville's canon 'post-war' wife, and they buy and run the Leakey Cauldron together. She was also a reasonably popular pairing for Neville in fics where he was a side character even before JK added a lot of the extra outside-the-books content. I spent too many of my teenage years in this fandom...

This really annoys me with regards to Harry Potter. The world feels so small because everyone either works at Hogwarts or at the Ministry or in Diagon Alley. It's just not an interesting world when all of your characters exist in the same circle around the same handful of locations. In a series about fucking literal magic, it's so unimaginative.

Current Internet events made me worried that the big plot twist of this video was that it was a bait and switch and it wasn't Andy behind Thanfiction, but James "White Women Tried to Silence My Gay Man Takes on Things" Somerton. I kept mentally picturing him throughout the rants about crying into ice cream and Mary Sues.

A hike for charity work in 2 ways
1) raises awareness of issues
2)people “sponsor the hike” and that money goes to the charity
Yeah. Not exactly a hike but we have/had this annual running thing in our town - adults and teens run the full thing, but kids typically have a certain square that they run rounds on. Weeks before they do the run they’d start coming by people’s houses asking to be sponsored (for charity), and people would go like “oh yes I will give 1 euro for each round you run” or like “if you run 5 rounds or more I will give (amount of money)” and such. It is/was a pretty successful event
(I use past tense in here sometimes because kids haven’t come by our door asking to be sponsored for quite a few years now).
In terms of hikes, my scouting group sometimes organizes day-hikes-with-events that are also open to non-scouts. The non-scouts pay an entrance fee, and food and drinks will be sold at certain places (often the starting/ending area)

I remember Andy tentatively trying to enter the Critical Role fandom At its height, and the callout posts for his previous skeezy culty predation. Glad that got nipped in the bud cus there’s always vulnerable people in fandoms that predators like Andy (he was deeply into psychological torture, manipulation and exploitation for ego and survival) would absolutely devastate.
Omg i was almost part of this cult. As a young closered queer teenager who was really naive, into Harry Potter and angsty fanfiction i was the perfect audience for DAYD. My favorite character has always been Neville Longbottom. I loved the premise of DAYD but as the story progressed it became more and more violent and made less and less sense as time went on. I ended up leaving before getting too invested in the DAYD fandom, but the DAYD concepts have truly traumatized me and have been burned in my brain. Thank you so much for covering this, i thought I'd imagined the whole thing as it happened so long ago.
