It helps contextualize it, so Freud was bad- but many contemporaries were *significantly* worse.

I’m pan, and when I rarely go, I just love the physical prowess, mastery and empowerment that can be brought from it. Like anything, there is good and bad, sad and happy, but those women work fucking HARD and deserve respect and a safe place to earn that money because they provide it for us too. Very insightful and thoughtful perspective of that demographic. Love it. Also, when it doesn’t bother them, I prefer talking to the employees over a cigarette like a regular person. If anyone listens to frenemies, it's terrifying how many of these themes Trish has actually experienced (the majority of their stories can be backed up at this point; they try not to troll so that others take them seriously). They've been working really, really hard in therapy, have a loving (non-abusive) fiancé, and finally have a supportive nontoxic friend group. Things are looking up for them, but ya -- the psych ward, the SA, mental and physical abuse. This book is a total projection of their actual experiences and it makes me so sad.

As someone deeply interested in psychology and spesifically truama psychology, this is actually genuinely interesting. Now, it's usually not to this extent, but people who were chronically abused or mistreated as kids don't develop healthy relationship skills or healthy understandings of what love, respect, safety ect is supposed to look like. And very, very often victims will get a sort of "stockholm syndrome" like attachment to their abuser.
In fact, human traffickers will spesifically target people who are insecure, lonely, and have difficulty enforcing boundaries or spotting red flags, very often as a result of child abuse or neglect.
The ways that the human brain can be twisted by even seemingly mild neglect, mistreatment, and abuse, especially during childhood, is really amazing and often unexpected. I can totally see Protagonist Mary's actions and thoughts making sense in that framework.
That all said though this book is miles away from being actually good at communicating the reality of sadly far too many people. I think there *could* be potential, but it would require massive rewrites, and ***definitely*** massive changes to the framing. Paytas seriously needs to hire an editor. And see some professionals. I genuinely hope she's doing okay, because wow is that book. A lot.
I like that Aeons says that dark/nasty topics shouldn't be "disallowed" in fiction, but you also shouldn't mislead your audience like this book is doing. Like, if I only looked at the cover and heard about it being erotica, I would think this was about a young woman who likes to tease guys/girls and has fun doing it (which is a super hot premise for an erotic book, erotic doesn't need to be super deep).
This is the same as someone writing a gory violent fic and not putting any tags about it having gore and just describing the story as "action packed" ajkhfajkfhj

The character losing consciousness in order to move the plot along is a clear homage to Dante Alighieri who utilised the same technique in his masterpiece (but still less culturally pivotal than 'Tease') 'Divine Comedy'
This honestly feels like that era of really badly written romance books that were on Wattpad in like the mid-2010s. Like, our protagonist is always shy and never wears makeup yet is effortlessly beautiful, the guy she falls in love with is always desperate to protect her but borderline emotionally abusive, there’s always some girl whose ‘face is caked in makeup and skirt barely covers her ass’. It’s really giving early writer working through some issues vibes.
