ANYWAYS, obviously the sudden canon status of a very popular ship in a once deeply popular on tumblr fandom set the whole site on fire, with the super hell memes being the main focus. this was combined with rumors (which turned out false) of putin retiring and the state of georgia flipping blue during the 2020 american presidential election to create beautiful chaos. the phrase “putin was so sad about the state of his favorite ship destiel that he’s retiring” and “destiel made georgia turn blue” were uttered. truly a night to never forget. there were some secondary waves with the final two episodes of supernatural, which got memed on for completely ignoring the whole destiel being canon and just being a really terrible ending to a series as a whole, but they weren’t on the level of super hell. also a conspiracy about the dubs of the finale which seemed to show dean reciprocating more explicitly and what that meant, that’s a whole other thing though. go watch Sarah z’s videos. idk just generally go consult other sources on this. i only remember so much.

The major difference is that 4chan users fought to keep people out while tumblr users fought to stay alive.

ESSENTIALLY destiel is the ship name for the characters castiel and dean from the show supernatural, which i believe (if some people are to be believed) had hinted at them maybe being A Thing a few times, but never really committed to it. regardless of whatever in the show pointed to it, they were a very long-running ship in the fandom with a very minimal hope of actually being A Thing.
anyways at some point in the show’s long run, castiel had made a deal with some entity that he could never have true happiness. go watch sarah z’s videos on the subject if you want more specific details on that, because i don’t really recall. this will be important later.
then suddenly, like two episodes (?) before the SERIES FINALE, the show runners did a very unexpected move and has castiel confess his love to dean. and because of that deal castiel had made, he immediately got zipped away because being able to express his love was like, his true happiness i guess? but that sudden moment (because iirc that deal hadn’t been relevant in SEASONS) combined with the disproportionate lack of effort dean’s actor put into the scene + dean not really explicitly reciprocating (to some even seeming disgusted) gave it a very homophobic twinge to people, hence the joke “he got sent to super hell” tying into this vibe. this was then combined with reappropriating a cgi sequence from a completely different episode more befitting the “super hell” to create the meme we all know and love. i don’t 100% know, anyways, that’s just what i recall. go watch sarah z’s videos on it, like i said.
ANYWAYS, obviously the sudden canon status of a very popular ship in a once deeply popular on tumblr fandom set the whole site on fire, with the super hell memes being the main focus. this was combined with rumors (which turned out false) of putin retiring and the state of georgia flipping blue during the 2020 american presidential election to create beautiful chaos. the phrase “putin was so sad about the state of his favorite ship destiel that he’s retiring” and “destiel made georgia turn blue” were uttered. truly a night to never forget.
there were some secondary waves with the final two episodes of supernatural, which got memed on for completely ignoring the whole destiel being canon and just being a really terrible ending to a series as a whole, but they weren’t on the level of super hell. also a conspiracy about the dubs of the finale which seemed to show dean reciprocating more explicitly and what that meant, that’s a whole other thing though. go watch Sarah z’s videos. idk just generally go consult other sources on this. i only remember so much.
I've never used Tumblr, but looking from outside inward, and seeing 'Bug Ass my beloved' in a heart-shaped locket is hilarious and i dont even know why, or what context makes it funny. These tumblr memes seem insane though

tumblr is funny because that's where half the memes on the internet come from and people think the site is dead. but it's not? the whole site is still generating new interesting content and memes. tumblr is 100% insane but it's also really entertaining too.

If you ever see a post that's like "hey this post might have sensitive content" that's cause of tumblr's censor thing. (also your not allowed to look at the post lol). Since a decent chunk of tumblr's users were nsfw artists or consumers, a decent chunk just. left.

my group of friends got obsessed in 2017-2018 with saying that they were "tumblr" and were part of a wattpad group-role-chat named "the tumblr's" (as in, they are a tumblr, like it's a species. don't know how to word it in english) and i eventually joined just because i didn't wanna be left out and ... i mean 14 year old kids be like that sometimes, but I felt super uncomfortable wheen they said tumblr as a singular easthetic and not a bank of aesthetics
