It's honestly so funny that Cassandra Clare was so disgusted by taboo stuff in the harry/ginny fanfic, yet proceeded to make potential incest a huge plot point in her stories
it's hilariously buckwild to me that a not-insignificant portion of harry potter fans at that time shipped harry and hermione, wanted ron and ginny out of the way so their ship could be together, and decided the only way to achieve that...was incest
sometimes people actually are disgusted by the very things that they are drawn to... or drawn to them because they are disgusted by them. who knows what it is in this case, but i also thought it was pretty funny.
I feel like it gets overlooked a lot that she seemingly searched for a random photo of an "ugly" woman to use as an avatar for her made up hater. That's super gross.
I wonder if it was someone Ms Scribe knew irl, I don't think it's ever been established who they actually were (hopefully they never knew someone user their picture for PottersGinny...
Imagine being that lady and finding out that people not only made fun of your looks, but that someone used your pictures to spew anti-miscegenation and racist rhetoric.
And now weirdo trools on twitter use pics of ugly people to say hateful things knowing others will attack the person in the pfp for their looks. She was the original troll. Talk about girlboss.

after all that insanity I realized she has a kid who's like. 20ish now. I'm so curious if they have any idea what their mother was doing in her free time.
Honestly, given that she parlayed her free time into being an impressively wealthy author, as a kid I’d pick and choose my battles on what to turn my nose up about.
If her kids are into fandom there is even a chance one of 'em watched this video. imagine if they don't know. not fully. maybe only that mom was part of fandom culture like what if they said "mom come here, i gotta tell you about this insane fandom story!"
Tbh her story about getting fired over fanfic is even more #thathappened than all the rest of her antics. Fanfic had been expanding on the internet for awhile by then on message boards and fan sites and stuff, so it had a bit more public exposure than in the ultra-niche fanzine days, but I feel like unless someone was really deep into fandom, it just wasn’t part of their consciousness. In 2003, the level of explanation required from journalists would have been pretty extensive and I still feel like the public response would have been shrugs and confusion rather than righteous indignation. I was pretty young at the time so maybe my perception is skewed, but I just don’t see the average person in 2003 understanding the fandom ecosystem enough to care.
What I find funny is that Gryffindor Tower was accused of being prudes literally just because they were responsible with their smut and how you could access it

The part that gets me the most is that Ms. Scribe went so hard after Gryffindor Tower for being "prudes" because they kept their NSFW content hidden, rather than going after Sugar Quill, who just straight up didn't allow X-rated fic on their site.
I think a big part of it was also the fact that nobody really knew who anybody at Gryffindor Tower was. A lot of the people that MS wanted to be friends with had old connections to a lot of the Sugar Quill mods, meaning that if she started going after them a LOT more people would have decided to stay neutral. By targeting the smaller, more defenceless GT, she basically guaranteed herself support (especially because they already had a pretty bad reputation after Jeff)
@@allanturmaine5496 No. GT only allowed Ginny/Harry fics. GT mods and Sugar Quill mods were friendly for the most part. GT didn't host explicit slash. I like how Ms. Scribe rhetorically asks "Who could possibly be concerned about their child's sexual orientation at eighteen months old" after having just written the world's fakest fake story about her one year old kissing another one year old on the lips repeatedly, and deriving entertainment from it.
I was just about to comment the same thing lmaooo She was so focused on snarking an imaginary homophobe, that she didn’t realize talking about two toddlers mouth kissing in the way she does is fucking weird in general lmao
Honestly, that story was really kind of creepy to me. It’s not okay that the Christian mom was being homophobic about a young kid, but I also think it’s legitimate to be a little concerned if your one year old is constantly kissing ANY other kids on the lips. It doesn’t necessarily mean anything bad is happening, but it’s definitely worth making sure your kid hasn’t been hurt by anyone, and it’s also a good idea to try to explain to her that she shouldn’t do that too much as casual behavior, cause it could upset other kids.
I can't imagine feeling this strongly about harry potter full stop 😅 I was a vampirates kid. Elite kids book series. Even at like 12 years old I found HP boring, badly written, and lacklustre in comparison and I somehow missed the whole HP cultural craze so I was VERY surprised to learn just how in their feelings ppl were about it. Minor point of clarification: “wank” is British slang for masturbation. “Fandom Wank” or “fanwank” was coined as basically referring to behavior that could be described as masturbatory, be it in the sense of being self-aggrandizing, navel-gazing, or just generally placing far greater importance on online fandom than could be considered healthy. And (at least in the mid 00’s Transformers fandom where I cut my teeth on internet discourse) had a double meaning of applying to moments in official media specifically catered to fans. IE: moments that could be described as either making fans “wank” or the creators “wanking” for the fandom.
Was looking to see if someone had posted this. Not 100% sure when it started to cross over as a term used in fandom but I do remember seeing/using it on the Spacebattles forums at least as early as 2003, possibly earlier.
I need you to know that 'wank' is British for 'masturbate'. I need you to understand that calling a news source 'Fandom Wank' is essentially a more subtle way of calling it 'Followers Circlejerk', and that I wake up every day crying because of this fact.
Finally. Somebody said it. I'm either very British or incredibly immature, but I couldn't help but giggle a bit every time she said "wank". If they really did mean it as a slang term for cringing or whatever, please tell me they knew...

There are two online personas I thought then were Ms. Scribe. One was supposedly a woman from Chicago who definitely 100% was pregnant by a very definitely real person who very definitely was directly involved with the production of Peter Jackson's LoTR movies; the other who was said to be a young woman from somewhere in Germany who was very definitely being cyber bullied and later IRL stalked by a man who was angry that she wrote LoTR fanfic which 'reflected badly on the purity of Tolkien's work.' (????) I have no proof that these people were indeed Ms.Scribe but the MO, the methods and the tactics they employed were absolutely exactly the same as Ms. Scribe. @@error-try-again-later Uh, no. Cassie Claire was established as a BNF, Gryffindor's Tower, Sugar Quill and the other major fic sites she mentions were all established before *any* of the movies had been released, and while the books were up to Goblet of Fire/Order of the Phoenix when all of this was going down (most of it happened between the publication dates for those two books) the second movie had just been released. It was *very* much a book fandom and I know that a *ton* of people in the fandom hadn't bothered to watch them - I didn't see any of them until 2004 when POA came out, and I didn't go back and watch the first two until years after that. I still haven't seen the last three, and at this point I almost certainly never will. I know it's weird for people who grew up with the movies to *not* picture the cast when they think of the characters, but the fandom was already incredibly massive by the time filming even started and none of us had those actors as any kind of frame of reference. The vast, vast, vast majority of fic being written in those days was either futurefic or stuff set around the same general time as the Order of the Phoenix, and all kinds of people were used in fancasts or "this is who my Harry looks like" things - like, iirc there was an Irish actor who got used for Ron a lot, but fuck if I can remember his name.

Yes! I remember liking GT back in the day. I was really young when I got into fandom stuff and was grateful that they were more kid-friendly. When I got a little older I was shocked that the broader fandom directed so much rage at them for (checks notes) trying to be welcoming to children who were fans of a children’s book. I didn’t spend much time there before it imploded but a lot of the stuff I read was pretty good (according to preteen me, anyway) and I never got the impression that they were homophobic, quite the opposite. They weren’t pro-Drarry obviously, but a lot of them really liked Remus/Sirius. Granted, my memories of the various fanfic sites are a little muddled and I’m not 100% sure that this was GT, but I remember reading a fluffy PG Harry/Ginny fic on there with Remus/Sirius as a background couple. It’s still really hard to find kid-friendly fic featuring gay pairings and I really loved that story. I’ve looked a few times to see if the author posted it anywhere else but I’ve never been able to find it. I feel so bad for all the writers on there who had nothing to do with any of the drama and were left without a community when GT went down, bc I can’t imagine they felt comfortable on the other sites after everything that happened.

Honestly, that story about her young daughter was creepy as hell. It’s NOT okay for a parent to be homophobic about their young kid, but it’s also very legitimate to be concerned about your child constantly trying to kiss other kids, regardless of their gender. Of course it could be completely innocent, but it’s worth making sure the kid hasn’t been hurt by anyone, and it’s also important to teach them not to do that in order to prevent them from trying to do it with kids that aren’t comfortable with it. Again it can be innocent, but it also can be a sign of the kid being hurt by adults, and it could also potentially hurt other kids.
You can tell I’m so far out of the fandom community these days because you said “shipping preferences” and I immediately thought “wow can’t believe people would be pressed about FedEx vs. USPS”

And (at least in the mid 00’s Transformers fandom where I cut my teeth on internet discourse) had a double meaning of applying to moments in official media specifically catered to fans. I'm old and I remember all this. Even all these years later I still have a suspicion that Ms.Scribe dipped her toes in the online Lord of the Rings fandom (which, ironically is where I actually knew Cassandra Clare from, who back then was known as Cassie Claire.) There are two online personas I thought then were Ms. Scribe. One was supposedly a woman from Chicago who definitely 100% was pregnant by a very definitely real person who very definitely was directly involved with the production of Peter Jackson's LoTR movies; the other who was said to be a young woman from somewhere in Germany who was very definitely being cyber bullied and later IRL stalked by a man who was angry that she wrote LoTR fanfic which 'reflected badly on the purity of Tolkien's work.' (????)
I have no proof that these people were indeed Ms.Scribe but the MO, the methods and the tactics they employed were absolutely exactly the same as Ms. Scribe. Eh. Depends on which book it's set in, the characters age as the books progress, they end up 17-18 by the later books but to play devil's advocate, they are fictional, not-real characters so it doesn't really matter too much... though I still think it's... _Sus._
It's especially disgusting when you remember that their frame of reference was usually the live action cast 🙃
@@poppythedogofwondersnobody asked you to justify it
@@bunnymcfoo8650spending pages justifying child smut dancing around the fact that the first two movies had absolutely been released when all of this went down. Even if someone in the scene had purposefully not watched the films, it would have been VERY hard to have never seen images or trailers from these movies featuring twelve year olds. Nobody’s going to arrest you, just admit it’s a bit weird 😂
When Strange Æons whips out the printed version of well preserved harry potter drama you know shit's abt to get juicy
My mum recently told me (after several glasses of wine) that she was a part of HP for grownups and later Sugar Quill.
I still haven't been able to digest this information.
Holy heck, I just realized that my “one of Those harry potter grown ups” aunt is the right age to have been involved in all this. I have no idea if she reads or writes fic, and I certainly don’t have the balls to ask, but man, this is gonna keep me up at night wondering
You should ask for more tea
Ad me to the pinglist when you get your mom to do an expose on all the things she remembers. 😂

FYI, I can attest from personal experience that nothing pissed off Fandom Wank members more than pointing out how much they indulged in exactly the behavior they trashed other people for. Wow, that really set them off. It was hilarious.
What's always fascinated me about this saga is how she kept track of all the sock puppets. I can barely remember 2 different login detail at any given point.
Spite is an endless fuel source.
I bet she used the same password for them all
@@AeonKnigh432 she could have also written her passwords down, but I feel like having the same password for all of them would make more sense
I wonder how she even had the time to both write fanfiction and all those stupid fake drama comments.
As someone who used to troll people on Facebook as a teen, you use the same password for everything lmao
The introduction of the name Ebony in this story gave me whiplash. I know they aren’t related in any way but holy moly that’s like an irl Easter egg

Gryffindor tower suffered so much through all this and didn’t even get a fraction of the payoff they deserved
@@alissapenridge7516 THIS!!! And you know that even after the whole thing was revealed if anybody said that they were even remotely involved with GT they still would have been attacked
I think some of the GT mods actually helped create AO3, so at the very least they went on to better things, if that's true
@@VaatiOfDarkness wait seriously? Well if that’s true then I’m really happy for them. They’ve been a great success
The ex-GT members had the last laugh when Harry/Ginny became canon! It's not only that Harry and Ginny are compatible, it's that it's a form of karmic justice against everyone who abused them...

YES!!! Fellow Discworld fan! I noticed that too!
Such a fitting name!
Also to be fair. It could be entirely fake.
There’s also potential risk for transferring illnesses like Mono.
@@sweatysocks8214 yeah, I kinda saw it as being fake.
Lol you think any of that happened
I'm sorry I do not think this is a relevant concern in this situation
You can tell I’m so far out of the fandom community these days because you said “shipping preferences” and I immediately thought “wow can’t believe people would be pressed about FedEx vs. USPS”
