Think I can explain the Denny’s thing. Much like the Hank Green DNI is likely a reference to when John Green was on Tumblr, it’s likely a reference to an era when brands started sidling into Tumblr via blogs run by said brand’s social media team. One of the first to really gain traction was Denny’s, who embraced the “place you end up at when it’s 3 am and hungry and everywhere else is closed, also you’re probably high” image the restaurant chain had with what we came to call “Weird Denny’s”. Of course, as it was always just another attempt by marketers to put advertising fucking everywhere, the fond sentiment for Weird Denny’s didn’t last.
I think that his father being obsessed with horses is a reference to the play Equus which is about a young man whose religious upbringing mixes with his budding hormones and projects onto a horse god he makes up named Equus. A lot of themes of that play are present in the muppet joker’s persona.

This man is every single component of Lord English simultaneously. The puppets, the clowns, the swords, the horses, the weird sex stuff, the ramblings about religion. If it turned out the entire inspiration for this was Homestuck I wouldnt be surprised.

The whole Bucephalus thing is a reference to Living Poetry, a surrealist film by Alejandro Jodorowsky. A character poisons a horse named Bucephalus in the movie. Very clever

Emphasis on detail produces some of the most gorgeous writing. It is specific, in the moment, yet the attached emotion doesn't seem to match what is described.
Is it fiction? Oh absolutely...
Is it incredibly compelling and intriguing storytelling?... Yeah.
