Oh my god, finally a story that changed my life. My friendship with someone I’d been friends with for 15 years ended over a disagreement that started with Sonic for Real Justice. It turned out to be kinda freeing for me to be rid of this person, but it never fails to make me laugh that a 15-year friendship ended because of an unhinged, SATIRICAL, obviously-ridiculous Sonic the Hedgehog ask blog (run by a predator?? WHAT????? holy shit.)

I think the reason this was so believable is because
1. All but one of the mods are stated to be teenagers and teenagers are prone to drama.
2. Sonic the Hedgehog is already associated with the internet’s biggest clusterfuck (Chris Chan) so a Sonic-themed blog experiencing severe turmoil isn’t entirely unexpected

What's incredible about the Sonic blog is how it is such a perfect microcosm of the fandom space bullying and group implosion that happens in every single online space.
Duuuuuude(gender neutral), I WITNESSED that group eat itself alive. Like people and Strange thinks that’s where it ended but nooooo. They branched into these “Daily-(female sonic blog)” dedicating themselves to drawing (safe) drawings of that character every day. They recruited people through tumblr, then invited them to discord where I ended up scrolling up and discovering the shit show of a fight! Like it was just hiding up in the text logs you had to scroll up for MILES. It was bonkers. When I learned my what I learned I realized I was terminally online and went to finally eat grass.

I caught on early on that it was likely satire, because the characters the mods picked just fit WAYYY too well with the drama they started, (I say this as someone who was fascinated by the Sonic series for a little while but I'm not in particularly deep) but it was still nice having it confirmed lol

I'm kind of relieved to hear it was satire, because the whole time I'm listening to the story, I was like, "this is so on the nose!". Silver being a shy boi who screws up and gets kicked, Shadow being a "2 edgy 5 u" space-kin guy, Sonic splitting his attention between Amy and Sally and then Amy getting jealous - all of that reads more like someone with knowledge of Sonic characters making a satire account about them than just happenstance drama that happened after the face claims.

As someone who occupied many sub-cultural spaces in my teens and early twenties, one of which was antisjw-ism, I think a lot of the hostility stemmed from the sense that the cultural 'rules' were being unfairly broken. Pre-2012 internet culture demanded a universal surrender of the right to be offended. That's actually a bad thing to demand, considering many things are genuinely offensive, but it is, in a perverse sense, fair. Add onto that the blunt reality that the cultural staples of antisjw-ism (video games and imageboards, for instance) were effectively safe-spaces for struggling young men, safe-spaces that were then perceived as being violated by 'feminists' and 'sjws' and I think a lot of the apparently irrational anger makes sense.

When it comes to questioning the validity of SFRJ, I know there was some questioning of it back in the day, but also I feel like the dramatic nature of it meant everyone was having too much fun to care if it was fake or not. If anything I remember there was more side discourse about if using the phrase "Justice for Mod Silver" was racist or not for making light of actual racism. Tumblr at its finest! I do fondly remember watching this all unfold and keeping up to date with my friends in skype.

i just now realized that i just barely missed actually being there for Sonic For Real Justice when it was actively happening. like i joined tumblr about a month after it happened
GOD I remember watching this saga go down in real time 😭 I was 17 in sixthform at the time and my friends and I had two empty lessons either side of lunch on the day it all kicked off so we sat in the cafeteria reading the posts out to each other, we treated the blog like a daily newspaper for the rest of that week 😂 We were also obsessed with reading My Immortal and a bunch of other cringe Harry Potter and Twilight fics, as well as cringewatching Onision, Cool Cat, John Sakars, etc, and streaming The Room. It was genuinely a lot of fun and your content really reminds me of it LOL
Why does this seem like an actual fanfiction? Like straight up 2010s sonic fanfiction. Sonic's power trip is so fricking funny.
I vaguely recall this blog. Also participating in the Goncharov madness was so much fun, born too late to explore the world, born to early to be yeeted into a black hole, born just in time for Goncharov.
