  • I used to use Notion a ton in my early days of personal knowledge management. But I just couldn't get over that it was all in the cloud, had poor offline support, and wasn't great on mobile.
    Anytype has arrived on the scene to challenge Notion by being the open source, end-to-end encrypted, local-first alternative with many of the features you know and love already.
    In this first look, we'll explore Anytype so you can decide for yourself if it can possibly unseat Notion in your workflow.

    I am observing anytype for quite a while now and the latest developments are promising. My main problem is the actual begin to use the software. I find it difficult to start with. It should be easier by giving some templates for beginners or similar. The start is the problem. If this obstacle is done and you keep working with anytype, the more difficult but useful things will come mor or less automatically. Thanks for your very good video. I will follow you now.

    I did some alpha-testing of this app starting quite some time ago. But I put it aside to wait for the beta to be released. Here is my impression...
    I really think the emhasis on peer-to-peer, rather than central server under a megacompany's control, will be the key. Anytype could lead the web in a cooperative, privacy-enhanced direction. The Anytype model could help restore the internet to what we originally envisioned when it was just getting started. Or we could continue to allow the web to be controlled by a few large corporations that practice surveillance capitalism. The Notion-like characteristics are not what's important about it. That's just some initial building blocks for users to make stuff with. Anytiype will evolve much further. It is really and entirely new model for the web itself.

      I really wanted to like Anytype and I've been testing it for a while too. It's just not there yet, the whole sets/collections thing is underdeveloped and managing tags on multiple items is clunky. I've found that Capacities is basically what I wanted Anytype to be. However, I do really like the Anytype devs and community, they're really supportive, it just needs some more time in the oven.

    I can actually see myself using this app, especially for project management. Notion was a non-starter for me, due to it's lack of E2E, so it's good to know that there's this local first alternative... something I've gotten more into thanks to Logseq and Obsidian.

    To answer the ending question. Yes. And a matter of fact for a while now I've been using notion for less sensitive things because of its convenience. And using obsidian for everything including everything I use notion for because I don't want to lose it I just either copy and paste it or export it and mark down. I love obsidian but it has its issues of just being time-consuming and yeah. Another video led me to your video going down the rabbit hole of any type. I am still confused about the local first thing. So they do have a server and it's stored on your computer but what makes it more private other than them just saying that it's encrypted or we know that it's encrypted I guess. I guess I'm just a bit confused on how it really works with the cloud. I would love long and depth video of the ins and outs of the company itself. And if I do get into it then obviously tutorials and whatnot. Thanks for the video and have a great one.

    Tried it today, looks very promising... but for me, it's just not there yet. Main gripes so far: 1) Can't chose the folder on my drive, so I had to make a junction link to use it on my external HD... what? 2) How is it local first if I can't disable sync to the servers without blocking the app with my firewall (that's the solution given on forums...). Can also still learn a thing or two from Notion when it comes to pretty-fying the app, symbols/emojis for pages for instance.

    • @josepmu2873
      @josepmu2873 7 месяцев назад +1

      When you hit the 1 GB limit on the Anytype app, your files are only stored locally.
      This means that any new data you add after using up your free 1 GB storage will only be saved on the device you added it on and won’t sync with your other devices.
      As for syncing with Google Drive or OneDrive, Anytype currently doesn’t offer a direct option to sync with Google Drive or OneDrive.
      But, it’s mentioned in the Anytype community that it’s possible to back up your data on an external hard drive. This could involve manually moving your Anytype data to Google Drive or another cloud, and it’s said that the ability to self-host is on Anytype’s roadmap, which could allow for more flexibility in the future.

    The only reason I’m still using notion daily is bc of the PPV setup and integrations. It took notion a VERY long time to get to where it is now but I’ve stuck w it. That and coda which has much more functionality.
    Anytype’s objects are really powerful and make more sense than indiv floating notion or coda blocks. Ideally I’d combine heptabase or scrintal, coda, notion and anytype

    If Anytype wants to be complete and the best in category, right now it's lacking. Many areas dont seem intuitive at first.
