    I really like how Anytype takes the stuff that need plugins and setups in Obsidian and present them effortlessly, I really love the idea of Objects, Set, and Global tasks. I'm moving to Obsidian and building my processes from scratch there, but I also am keeping an eye on Anytype because of that convenience. I can easily see myself procrastinate by spending an eternity tinkering with Obsidian instead of doing my work, having a program that's powerful enough but also limiting in some ways is sort of freeing. But I can see how that's very limiting.
    My two problems so far which are preventing me from going to Anytype is the lack of support for the Frontmatter part of Markdown, in either import and export, which means that when I decide to jump back to Obsidian I would lose all the linking. And the way syncing in inseparable from the app itself, so in order to sync I can either pay them or host it myself but build everything from code. Sync is not an issue for me right now though, as they offer 1Gb free and my data so far is only text, so 15Mb.

    I feel like a lot of people are making quick judgments for something that's still in beta. It's understandable if it currently doesn't have a function that is vital to your work but it's constantly being worked on and you can also make feature requests in the forums. The crew at Anytype are very receptive to different ideas. Being in beta, nobody should be relying on it anyway but once it gets out, it'll be a lot better than its current form. It'll be my main app then. The combination of open-source and self-hosting are reasons enough for me to use Anytype over Obsidian.

    • @nickmurdaugh9856
      @nickmurdaugh9856 Год назад +6

      And given that it's open source and has the ability to be self hosted, if you want a feature, add it.

  • @jmJoene

    Thank you for covering it, Danny!
    I have been using, or better said testing, Anytype for over 2 years now. While it is not there yet for me, they are getting very close eventhough it is still in Beta. Active and open team, with interactive development zoom calls that you can join.
    A couple of points you may have missed:
    1. Backlinks are in Anytype, hidden in the graph view and called Flow (see top of the screen in graph view). It is a bit clunky to be honest.
    2. You can also query sets by a relation i.s.o. an object type.
    3. When you have thousands of tasks, I don't think it will slow down. Since it shows max 50 at a time. Though I only have a couple of hundred tasks at the moment.
    4. You can link any object to a collection via the three dotted menu in the top right, then select Link to. Again a bit clunky.
    5. You can see all relations of the object you are in with the triangle button in the top right. Here you can also edit them.
    Missing features like calendar view, split screen, workspaces, outline, a right sidebar and more are highly requested on the community forums with most being at least confirmed to be researched.

    doesn't look like an improvement over Obsidian. What I like about Obsidian is it's adaptability. It can be as simple or as complex as you like, and will 'grow' with you. There is always more adaptability to add if you need it with the add-ons. Honestly, why would anyone change?

    • @rbpompeu1

      @RafaelCardosoSlam Год назад +34

      Obsidian isnt really good for database. It is more complex than it should in that way. Sometimes all you need to do is build relations for objects in a table, and you don't want to learn dataview for that.
      I love obsidian, but that was always a deal breaker for me.

    It's always good to see competition because it ultimately raises everyone's game. However, I'm not gonna lie, I am getting sick and tired of every new app being based on Electron. It's bad enough that Chrome totally dominates the web browser market, we really don't need that exact same engine giving Google a similar monopoly in desktop & mobile applications too.
    I can only hope that the new cross-platform coding solutions that are emerging gain sufficient traction to become viable alternatives to Electron; (although looking at developer behaviour so far, it seems sadly unlikely). We will probably end up with a re-run of Blink vs Gecko, and we've already seen how that battle turned out (just look at Firefox's dwindling user base and Chrome using its dominance to attempt to eliminate image formats and destroy the open web with self-serving initiatives such as its Web Environment Integrity).

    • @TylerHallHiveTech

      As a user. I agree.
      As a small teamed dev, you have no other choice (if you want to release with reasonable time frames)
      I've tried some other electron replacements there might be some hope out there.

    • @THX_1138
      @THX_1138 Год назад

      Personally, I hate Electron. Not just because of its potential for monopoly, but also because it's just a slow, bloated, horrible user experience. You can't even do basic automation using end-user macro tools because the Electron UI elements are not individually named or addressable (as they are in every non-Electron program).
       @TylerHallHiveTech I'm _not_ a developer. Which Electron alternatives do you think show the most promise? Is Tauri any good?

    • @nicolascossio5961
      @nicolascossio5961 Год назад

      @@THX_1138 as a developer i can tell you that there are currently no effective alternatives to Electron for a production ready cross-platform desktop application. And although Electron has disadvantages it's not that terrible if the app is well optimized. heck vscode is quite okey and it's electron based. Also keep in mind that they plan to release an API and plugin support, and that's enabled to some extent by Anytype being Electron (any plugin is compatible with all platforms since it is just js+html+css).
      i get the hate for electron but for projects of this size I think that it's a very sane decision from all perspectives

    Thanks for another excellent video! - So, you are saying that types in AnyType correspond to classes in Obsidian, but are these features really comparable? I believe that classes in Obsidian are basically CSS classes, so it's about how stuff is displayed. It appears to me that Types (of Objects) in AnyType is much more than that, or am I missing something? What I'm trying to understand is to what extent something similar to different object types can be recreated in Obsidian. - For example, I have notes in the "people" folder to indicate that they are people, but I believe Obsidian still treats these notes as mere notes, right? You can change how links to these notes are displayed using the "Supercharged Links" plugin, but that seems to be still quite different from what AnyType can do with people objects, right?

    No no no no no!
    If people make better and better applications, how will I settle on to one? I am just getting used to Obsidian and this looks like it trumps Obsidian.
    Seriously, this is great. It can do a lot for which we need plugins in Obsidian. And my experience with plugins in Obsidian is not great. Almost every plugin has some issue that I cannot figure out whether it is my inadequacy or a bug / feature of the plugin.
    Now Obsidian only has Canvas for which it is still worth using. Otherwise, I am ready to jump.
    Great video by the way. Very clear and precise. You have a beautiful brain to be able to present in such a manner.
    Also, Danny, I did not find any mention of bidirectional relational databases like Notion. Can Anytype do that? If yes, I can replace Notion too with Anytype.

    I came here because it said this was a beginners look at Anytype, and I am a beginner that literally just downloaded it. However, it was clear after a few minutes in that this was not a video for beginners, as the narrator continuously references other apps I’ve never heard of called Obsidian and Notion and keeps mentioning them when talking about the features of Anytype and saying how one is better than the other. That’s not what I’m here for based on the title of this video. I’m here to learn about how to use Anytype as a beginner. So, I’ve downrated this video. Sorry.

    So, maybe it's just me having some intelligence issues, but ... really! This is less flexible, offers less features, and an has an even steeper learning curve than obsidian. Looks like the full fledged individual working environnement of someone having worked with obsidian for years ... and not bothered with facilitating his/her workflow since the start. I know that there are people blaming obsidian as to much steered towards programmers ... let them have a look at this! When you are working with obsidian, you are able to decide yourself, how much complexity you want ... here it is all part of the package which is not working without it. Much to much complex nesting within the object structure ... If you're a programmer, such a system with all its object relations might be a wet dream. I suppose for most of the users of obsidian, who are mostly concerned with practicallity in their work, it is not. thank you, but NO thank you. Sorry! --- But still - as always - a wonderful concise presentation, Danny.
