I actually just gave up on anytype but watching your video has given me an interest at giving it another shot. From watching this I realize that maybe I’ve overlooked some features
Because of you, I think I've found the new tool for my notes, bookmarks, reading list, and watchlist. Thank you so much! I didn't see Anytype anywhere else but on RUclips when I was looking for Notion alternatives
thx for making this video. it's important that people get to know that there are alternatives and possibly better ones for their use cases. i am in the anytype beta and will start playing around with it.
I really like Anytype UI and UX, its beautiful. Although I wished it was kept simple and be the exact Notion alternative. It has some cool features and concept as you mentioned, but it was quite hard to grasp the concept and for me to recommend this to someone else who wants to migrate from Notion would confuses them alot.
Right... I'm hoping that gets smoothed out in the Beta release. Overall, it looks very nice to me, but struggles to feel smooth... but it gets updates and patches quickly, so it shouldn't be that way for too long.
Exactly. I don't understand the concept either... Pages, sets, collections, objects... the widgets in the panel. Relations seem to be more the properties?... I've been playing around with it for half an hour and still don't understand the concept. For people coming from Notion it will be too complicated.
@@devarni The system isn't super streamlined. I wouldn't let the widgets get super confusing; they're more helpful once you've made a vault fully your own and now want to navigate it easier. Relations are like if you linked an Obsidian page to everything it relates to: a book would have a link to a page called "author" that every other book links back to as well.
way to shine the light on a hidden gem 💎 i recently dove deep into the obsidian world and despite loving so many aspects of notion, i decided not to use it due to it's cloud~only, interface.. this here, however, looks like a stellar program with the same precious principles as obsidian ~ very happy to have stumbled on this video + very much looking forward to utilizing this awesome looking tool 👏🏽 🌹
Obsidian is a solid notes app, and honestly one that I use in tandem with Anytype. Notion I'd guess will fade out a bit, if they refuse to make offline mode a reality and other apps incorporate it. Anytype isn't going to be perfect; I'll warn you, but it is much better than most of the other stuff I've seen on this sort of thing. And, with any luck, the Beta will make it even better.
Some things about anytype are a bit slow getting used to coming from notion-land. Like the term "relations" seems to just mean attributes... not necessarily anything to do with relational databases (shared attributes). Sometimes I think there's no way to do something then find a backdoor way. Not a lot of editing in place. Maybe it's all there and just a steep learning curve, or maybe it's a bit kludgey and missing a few features. I need to next figure out the difference between a type and a relation, then see if I can get it to do views in a template, and roll-ups I need 2-3 levels deep).
I’ve been using notion for several months and find it so cumbersome and slow at times and hate that it’s entirely cloud based and keep looking for alternatives while I’m still struggling to get it all set up. Something about this feels like the answer and I’m excited to try it out
Glad you think so! Notion lacking an offline mode keeps me far away from it, so hopefully Anytype works out! Sounds like the beta version is looking to polish out a lot of the details of the current Alpha.
@@kostasmira2933 This is true. There is a notion import, but I believe it just puts everything into a set of imported notes. if you do try, let me know how it goes!
I have some extra time starting in July, and I want to use it to learn some information organizing tool. I'm currently considering using Capacities and Anytype. They sound very similar from what I've heard. Anytype's ability to work offline is a big plus. Capacities sounds like it's a bit further along in development, and has a number of enthusiasts. Do you have any other thoughts on how they compare? Edit: I just went to the Anytype website you listed and made an appointment for an onboarding introduction in July. That was easy.
I haven't compared them personally... I guess I probably should. The fact that Capacities has varying levels of paid versions makes me a little nervous that they're locking good features behind a paywall, but perhaps when they put out a full release it'll be solid. If you do try both, do let me know!
@@pianomacpower Presumably when Anytype puts out a full release, they'll put some features behind a paywall too. There's no telling how they'll compare until then. In the mean time, in Capacities you need to pay $12/month for the "Believer" sub for block-based linking, Custom object layouts and colors, Curated icon set, Beta access to new features (including to do's), and Early access to the mobile app (iOS and Android) (or $120/year). There's a pro sub that's not available yet. I don't mind paying for a subscription, if I end up using the app regularly.
@@pianomacpower Regardless, I very much appreciate you putting up these videos. It can be a real challenge to learn a new tool. I expect to look into AnyType in late July, after the spring quarter is over.

@@pianomacpower It is a great tool. I love that you can embed sets right into a page. I just get frustrated when I am typing in a code block and there's no way to get out of it without grabbing my mouse.

what if anytype becomes a subscription or a one time payment in the future do you think we can use older version of their app and have it completely offline ? but how can you sync with your other apps, is it possible(in the previously mentioned hypothesis)
Anytype is working on how they'll get funds, but they have been pretty clear that they don't want to take currently free features and make them subscription. As far as I understand, you will always be able to use what is in the app currently. The only thing I could see becoming subscription would be more storage, but right now you can get more just by giving feedback to the team. TLDR, I'm not too worried given all I know. Expect a full release, and thus some pricing model for new content, this year sometime.
Hmm... fair point. So Anytype will always work offline, no matter what. The Sync feature utilizes cloud storage, where (as far as I can tell) your data is securely stored and encrypted. If you ever go over your sync amount, you'd have to buy/request more storage. However, that space is used to sync between devices. It's stored locally on each device. That could be mistaken, but that's how I understand it. It's worked offline whenever I've gone on the plane, or just turned wifi off. The sync feature is simply used to sync between devices.
@@pianomacpower Thanks for the reply! I understand, but for me this defeats the purpose. Anytype proudly claims to be "local first", but I am still not in total control of my data, the size is limited not by the size of my harddrive, I can't chose the location (it has to be on c:\), and I can't deactivate sync... how can I put sensitive or NDA-protected client info on there? Big shame, I'll stick to obsidian I guess.
I don't understand the concept and while I find Notion, Coda etc. very simple, Anytype seems very complicated to me. It starts that you seem to be able to edit the sidebar itself with widgets and these then display e.g. sets etc. I imported something from Notion, which was then in a collection... what is a collection, why isn't it just a set? Pages don't seem to be the main element in Anytype, it's not a wiki concept like in Notion? Is there a structure at all and what does it look like? Oh... a calendar view doesn't seem to exist yet?
Yeah... the calendar view is pretty lacking. I guess it would've been wise to address the import thing. Anytype imports your Notion pages in as individual pages, and stores them in an "imported" collection... it won't recreate your Notion workspace in your Anytype one, which is a huge letdown.
Do the fact that it works offline mean, that it stores all the stuff on each PC i open it with? Or can you decide each time you use a new device weather you want to store locally or not?
Oh... yeah, that's not around anymore. That was the dashboard that the alpha version had, which was later scrapped in favor of a "homepage" being chosen by the user. I prefer the new way, but I do miss the fullscreen wallpaper of the first one.
I tried capacities for a bit, but I had the same problem with it that I have a little with Anytype; it's too structured by its own rules. I prefer more open-ended notes. Also, it doesn't work offline, and I'd rather it did... so I don't personally use it, but it does look pretty cool.
This service is invitation only and upon requesting early access, is trying to sign me up for a web conference. Their download page shows that no downloads for any device are available. This is likely why nobody is considering this.

They're looking to roll out a public Beta some time in June, so if you're not considering it now, getting involved will decrease in effort quickly once the software is further developed.
I'll have to look into that. I think it's stored somewhere in the application files, not in a folder like Obsidian. I should be able to put that into the next video though.
