Note Apps Ranked!

Apple Notes has the ability to be a minimalist Second Brain.

The Secret to Building a Second Brain that Works

I just want to pay for college.

No, the Note layout doesn't puts your title as the first line of text. Note layout DOESN'T have title, that's the whole purpose of this layout. And it's so usefull for so many reason that I'm confused that you didn't see them. One of the most obvious one for exemple. a Quote template. A quote don't have a title, so it's a perfect layout to later display every quotes in a Set at first glance.
Oh true... completely, fair; I hadn't thought of that. I've thought of notes as larger deals, but this... this is good... kudos.
The fact that the Note don't have Title, IS very valuable for me.
I think the biggest issue is first, it implies that we are going to use different spaces to the extent that we use different servers like Discord, which is possible, but not currently the state of affairs. So it just takes up extra space since most of us use only one space. If you choose to disable it, you have to manually enable it before you can switch spaces. On top of that, the settings menu is also only accessible through this bar now.
The discord analogy is really interesting... I hadn't thought of it like that. I like the idea of using different spaces simultaneously, but Anytype seems to want to be "all-in-one"... why divide from that point? Not the end of the world, but unfortunate methinks.
@@pianomacpower They have mentioned wanting to add real-time communication as a feature, but its distant in the roadmap for now. I would say the infrastructure is mostly in place, but it isn't high on their radar right now. So, in the meantime, I'll continue to use Signal.
i'm overwhelmed by how many of these kinds of apps there are to choose from.. what makes this different than the others?
thank you for sharing, I did find the sidebar is annoying, and maybe that's due to I am used to the fixation sidebar.
I have to disagree, I personally find it very practical to be able to switch from one Space to another very quickly. I'm used to this with Coda, but Anytype has made the Spaces even easier to access than Coda. I'm working with a lot of Spaces, and being able to select one of them with a single click is great. However, I think it should be optional (maybe with a pin/unpin function), because users who only work with a single space really don't need this bar.
I like the ability to switch, I just don't like the auto hide and show, and I think that they could've found a better place/way to integrate the switching... I liked how they had it before, with the bottom menu, or something like Obsidian would've worked fine too. This is my frustration with the design principle idea - this seems like they're doing it to have a sidebar, not because it is the best way to implement this idea.
@@pianomacpower Automatically showing and hiding the sidebars is an option in the settings. If you don't want to be distracted by left sidebars, switch this on. Everyone else can leave the sidebars as they are. So what's the problem? Of course, the new additional narrow sidebar for the Spaces could be optional for those users who don't need it if they only use a single Space. But for all other users, it's a useful feature because it allows access to the different Spaces with a single click, and it takes up little horizontal space, even on a small laptop. If you want or need to save space, simply switch the sidebars to "automatic" in the settings. By the way, it is also possible to hide/show the sidebars manually at any time.
Update: As of Anytype 0.42.3 you can now choose to have only widgets displayed or widgets and spaces.
@@Visual_Notes True. The .42.3 version actually makes this a lot nicer. I still prefer the old version, but I think what they've done is a good compromise.
I love Anytype and use it for most of my workflows and personal organisation these days even though an array of absolute key features for lists (sets) are still missing. But yes, the UI is ... not the strongest feature. Way too much whitespace, pop-ups like categories still regularly cover other boxes and text. Did not like this update, almost screamed at my screen until I found the preference for the sidebar remaining sticky. Anytype is all about customising my experience. So let me.
side bar wastes too much space. I use only one space so 90% of it is empty
I don't know wtf did they smoke when writing that update, but it had to be contaminated. Hate it, the bar disappearing is annoying and distracting as hell, it doesn't disappear consistently [sometimes it goes away faster, sometimes slower], simply not going to use anytype anymore if this stays.
my first thought when this update dropped in was "wtf?"
I've got to be honest, I like having the sidebar as a sort of 'engineer's interface' for my space, but I keep it hidden most of the time. Agreed though, the switch space from the sidebar is awful and strays from the minimalist feel that first attracted me to the app.
It's so confusing to use. I'm going back to Notion, it's more convenient.
you should make a review of how it works the app ´cause is taking me so much time to learn how to use it, but nice video
set , collection, page, Object can it get more confusing?
Ok, so ... worse than a normal notebook for writing, worse than a normal kindle for reading. You're doing a pretty shitty job advertising my friend [title]
How did you make the areas icons bigger?
Ive been looking for a self hosted notion. I ran into appflowy. I can't get it built due to rust issues. Why would you push unworking code to github? Anyways. I'll definitely check this out as it fits the bill even better than appflowy
Your litteraly the only dude that talk about anytype so thank you
Honestly, Is that your Voice, or some kind of an AI tool ?
Nope, that's me... I'm not super interested in meddling with AI tools. Is this asked as a good thing or a bad thing? XD
I'd be surprised if Amazon ever lets you write directly on their "normal" books....because they push Reading Across Devices and Whispersync so much. If you made a handwritten note in the margin, or circled something in a book....then, decided to read that book on a Paperwhite, it would mess up the annotation, b/c of the text layout.
Yeah, that's true... I hadn't considered the data/reading on a regular kindle aspect of it. And, in reality, does writing in the margins do a whole lot? I guess underlining is nice, but you can always make your book a pdf if you really need that. But good analysis - thanks.
I have a paperwhite and got the Scribe (yes, I'm keeping both). The Scribe is just perfect for me. I wanted a larger kindle and the option to jot notes and planners without the frills of a regular tablet. It feels so much better than trying to write/draw on an iPad Pro. To each their own, but I think it's simply great for my use.
I had planned on selling my Paperwhite after getting the Scribe, but ended up keeping it as the "read in bed" kindle. They are actually a perfect duo.
I do believe it's overpriced, but it's still the best bang for the buck e-ink writing device. It's best to get it under $200 during black friday sales and buy used/refurbished. Never pay full price because it's not worth the money. This is basically a luxury notebook and book.
This is great. Finally gonna be able to share some stuff online.
My wife just got me one for an early birthday present and I love it
Heck yeah.
I have a scribe n it’s ok. But it’s pretty amazing for notes feels very much like paper. To read is very good but if you’re into reading comics it’s quite bad. I purchased a fire max 11 on prime day n this I feel you get bang for your buck. It’s a beautiful screen n looks gorgeous. I got it for a very low price n this to me rocks. I think scribe is way overpriced. I can’t imagine paying over 400 dollars for a scribe no way. Getting the lowest price one is best. I got an open box one on eBay it’s like new so I didn’t pay full price. It’s quite disappointing but if it were less it would help.
Hope, we will see soon a firefox webclipper, thanks
Will there be an update to the progress bar relationship in the future? Or does it already exist? Sorry, I've only tried it a few days so I'm still confused 😅
Fair question; not sure! I think there's a progress bar, but I'm really not sure... if there is, it's probably bad, because I've never seen nor heard of its use. Will it get updated? I really hope so. There's not really a reason why not to have it, but sometimes Anytype has interesting priorities when it comes to updates...
Can you read and highlight pdf?
Yessir you can!
Had one and returned it, better options on the market, boox being one
I don't know. Crap like this just feels....pointless. Tech culture has given some weird illusions to humanity. Gotta keep the profits moving though I guess.
The Scribe may not be as pointless something like the Apple Vision Pro, but I get what you're saying. But from this perspective, the Kindle (e-ink in general) is one of the last places where tech tries to improve on physical media. Your phone doesn't try to replicate a landline, a shutter camera (for lack of a better term), a walkman or record player, etc. The closest thing it comes close to being a 1-1 upgrade is a calculator. But e-ink seems focused on being as close to paper as possible, while streamlining the process digitally. Something about that feels more comfortable than a lot of the digital world. I agree tech culture is rather silly, but I feel like that's more due to companies that actually produce the big tech. E-ink is a bit of its own world that's not as tied in methinks.
I still love this analysis, though
not really pointless. Think of an unlimited library of books and infinite notebooks in one device that has a battery life of several weeks. It's specifically for people that read books and take handwritten notes a lot.
what about the remarkable 2? Ain't that better when it comes down to taking notes?
For pure notes, I think so. Admittedly, I don't own one, and after buying a Scribe, I can't afford one. What I've heard is that the Remarkable 2 gives a better writing/annotating experience, but the reading experience is worse. There's no support for Kindle books, so I'm not quite sure where the ebooks come from (I know there are ways/apps, I'm just not familiar with them).
I did. I bought one today. I got a great deal. $325 for a 64gb with premium pen, a leather folio, and the charging block. 😃
Epic. To be fair, 64 GB is more than you will realistically ever need, unless you're an audiobook fan, but it's always good to be prepared. 64 GB will never run out 😅
@@pianomacpower I was just gonna get a 16gb because that’s all everyone says you really need. But this was such a good deal, I just jumped on it.
If you're buying things irresponsibly that have to be returned and then re-sold in palleted bulk, you're part of a bigger problem. Let's not encourage this.
I'm not trying to encourage buying and returning in bulk. I bought one a year ago and ended up needing the money. Now that my situation is more stable, I came back to it, and wanted to share my ideas. I don't think it's right to just buy it, use it, and then return it for fun, but if you're considering a product, I think fair utilization of the return policy can be justified. It's similar to buying clothes and returning those that don't fit. I'd never just buy it to review it for the channel and then return it; I plan to use/keep it.
Oh, stfu man. So, it's not these giant corporations needing to change. It's us, the consumers "problem." Just how the corporations that recently got caught scamming "Eco friendly" products blamed us for not falling for the lie. People, buy what you want with your own money. It's your money to do with what you want. Blame the corporations valued in the billions for not doing more. I am a single father of two and won't let some shill on the Internet blame me for buying something and then returning it.
The lack of circle / underline is a big one for me, guess I'll stick with a multi-purpose tablet.
That's fair. The reading/writing aspects of the Scribe are pretty well separated, to the point that it becomes a tool for one or the other, but never really both.
1) Too big. If I'm going to have to carry around a laptop or full tablet, I'll carry around a laptop or a full tablet. 2) Unsuitable for reading. It's Amazon, meaning it's easy to forget to jailbreak your purchases (oops, I mean, licenses) and you're making it easy for them to edit or delete your collection. Just, why? 3) Can you even turn what you handwrite into print? I don't think you can. At least, I've never seen any try it in these... reviews...
I think point 3 is possible; I'll give it a try and let you know 👍
@@pianomacpower Thank you. I'm seriously looking for an eink tablet that I can legitimately write in, not simply take notes, and no one bothers to show it.
1. Everyone's different. I like the lack of distraction and better battery. 2. It's easy as all hell to pirate a bajillion ebooks with Anna's archive etc, open it with Calibre and have it emailed to your kindle to automatically show up along all your other content in roughly 3 clicks.
Fellow Anna's archive enjoyer 🤝
I’ll buy one when I can connect a Bluetooth keyboard to it and type. Otherwise, I’ll keep using my Boox. Trust me, I want to be a Scribe customer.
Just to let everyone know, the bundle deal with the overpriced Amazon case is on sale too. I believe this sale puts it only $20 dollars more than the non-case set, so take that into consideration. I have heard that the 1st party cases degrade pretty fast, but I don't have anything official to back that up.
5:04 you'd want Kanban if you wanted to sort by the AUTHOR relation, it'll give you a clean view of each AUTHOR and their books nested underneath 😅.
Ooh I hate you. I was debating whether to get a Scribe today seeing as Amazon have it on discount for Prime day but I really should save my money and then you make a video literally titled "You should buy a Kindle Scribe this Prime Day."
🤣
*cheaper than ipad *useless
Touché. To be fair, it's pretty comparable price-wise to the iPad 10th gen, so if all you wanted was to read and write, at least you don't get blinded by blue light.
@@pianomacpower If it was 50 bucks I'd buy one just because I like gadgets, and when they get to that price I will probably buy one lol
Yeah but an iPad is super distracting, this is goat for reading
I concur. I really like how the Scribe is disconnected from everything else. It's a lot more relaxing. It is a lot of personal preference though.
ipad is mainly for entertainment purposes. Scribe is for productivity.
OK so I made a template for a list of things, and within the template I placed a couple of pages, when I make a new entry with the template it changes all the entries because it doesn't create new pages, it just references the first page made within the template altering the whole template in the process and effecting everything made with said template, why and what am I doing wrong, it's truly frustrating, thank you in advance.
I'd need more context to fully understand, but if you're placing links to existing pages in a template, that's what all the uses of that template will display. If you want to make a template that makes new pages, I'm not quite sure how you'd do that... I'd have to work on that. If your template links to pre-existing pages, using that template will just put those pre-made links in there too.
@@pianomacpower Thanks for the reply, you're correct the Template doesn't create a new page it just creates a link to an already existing page, my work around that was that I made a new type instead of the new page then I linked the new type to the template, so whenever I make a new entry, it just creates a new entry of the type I made 🤷♂, hope that was easy to understand, thanks :)

Does anybody have a good idea for creating a photos / videos vault, like a digital "photo gallery"? I could create a set from the type "Image" and that's cool because I can see Camera the photo was shot on as well as creation date, but how could I add new photos then? I always "embed" my media within my objects, but now this time, the media is the whole intention for my set. How would you guys do it? Thanks :) Maybe you could make a tutorial? :)
