This is my initial review since I just got the ipad and I'm hoping to update it when I've had it longer ruclips.net/user/postUgkxUGaHtKW8MwCql2fPyIm9-ftTqSMzKFFA . I removed the 500GB SSD from the HP and put it into a USB-C enclosure and plugged into the iPad. I do not see it in the iPad’s Files tab. The iPad does not recognize it. Since I have a multi-port dongle, I plugged the SSD into the dongle then plugged it into the iPad.Still nothing even though I know the SSD enclosure is getting power as I see the light on the enclosure and the wireless USB transmitter for my wireless mouse is working. Hi, nice informative video. I have a peculiar problem connecting SSDs to my iPad Pro 3rd Gen 12.9 in. I have two SSDs, both Sandisk, but one of them is the Extreme Pro version 1TB, while the other is the Extreme version 2TB. I use a Honeywell adaptor with a PD port that says 85 watts, to which I connect the original 20W power adaptor, while the SSD goes into the USB C (SS) port of the Honeywell adaptor, one by one though. The Extreme Pro 1TB connects perfectly and pretty much quickly, while the Extreme 2TB just doesn't show up in the Files app. The OS is 16.5, just updated yesterday. Any suggestion would help.

When disconnecting a drive, does it not have to be unmounted first? I just ordered an iPad Pro primarily for this feature. Looking forward to it arriving!
Hopefully you've got it figured out by now since this question was 4 months ago, but no you don't need to unmount. Ive used regular and micro SD cards, an old Toshiba 1tb hard drive as well as regular flash drives. I connect all of those with a UNI dongle. i tried using my brand new SSS 1GB external drive (exactly like yours) to my I-pad 9th gen by plugging the USB-C connect in to my I-pad power port from my SSD and it didn't work. The I-pad never recognized my SSD hard drive.
A couple of things: first, the iPads that have Lightning ports can certainly work with USB-C devices, if you use a USB-C to Lightning cable I have a couple of these. Secondly, the real issue here isn't connectivity, but rather, the compatibility of the operating system. I have two Seagate external drives (1TB and 2TB) and they work fine with Windows, but won't work at all with an iPad, even if I'm using the right cable to connect them with, which, in this case, would be USB-A, which "should" work with an Apple USB adapter (the type that has a USB-A port and Lightning port for power).
@Chinglish Reactions Don't confuse people. A disk formatted under Windows 10 in ExFAT works fine under MacOS and iOS and iPadOS. You probably meant NTFS, but didn't mention it. The NTFS disk is mounted in MacOS and is read-only (unless special third-party drivers are installed).
@@quietboysince59Do you mind share the steps to format this external drive to ExFAT and NTFS. Is there guide link for those who are not IT savvy but needed this back up done anyway. 😌
@@lydiawiryana3467 RUclips does not allow links in comments, so you can insert the following line into RUclips search yourself: "How to Initialize and Format a New Hard Drive in Windows 10". I’ll add from my experience that it’s best to format a drive in ExFat specifically under Widows10, and not under MacOS. And in order to use disks formatted on MacOS in HFS+ or APFS under Windows 10, I installed drivers Paragon HFS+ and APFS for Windows by Paragon Software. This makes it possible to use Mac disks under Windows. Another important observation: if the disk is supposed to be used with the iPad OS, then it is better to format it under MacOS in APFS and use such a disk under Windows through the installed driver from Paragon.
Macs have always been able to read disks formatted for Windows users but Windows users can not use a hard drive formatted by Mac. So if going back and forth between platforms, suggest keeping the Windows format....but if you have only Mac OS equipment would definitely use Mac formatted...get an external hard drive that connects with the ports you have or you will be "cabling or connecting" your self to death. Another work around is use the cloud...I upload my info to a few different cloud servers and use their storage so I can alway login and access no matter what platform I am working on. My pictures go to a picture site as well as iCloud....and then videos to another server...and my backups to another cloud. All of this is far cheaper than worrying about formatting and what cables and always up grading equipment so that can use an external and not having enough juice to operate. I do have a huge hard drive that works on my router to back up my computers and iPad content. Crunch the numbers and see what works for you, a lot of options out there.

I bought a Satechi dongle and I can't complete the act according to the video. The dongle shows up but when I connect SSD or hard drive with a spinning disc nothing registers. You got any ideas. Or should I Satechi support or Apple?
Hi! What if you also work with windows, and have an iPad? Do you need to have an specific external drive format to be compatible with both?
Format external to exfact
I'd love to use an ipad pro while traveling just to offload/backup my footage (cfast cards to 2 ssd's). Can you "select all"? Because there are tons of files directly on the top directory of my cfast cards. And can you copy the footage on two drives simultaneously? Thx!
Hello. I have an iPad Pro (5th generation) and the SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD 4TB. I have tried to connect it to my iPad but the SSD doesn’t show up, like in your video. Do you have an answer to this problem? I appreciate your feedback. Thank you in advance.
Might be your cable. It should work.
@@jeradtechThanks but already done it and did not work either.
Hey I am not able to copy from ipad to pendrive.
But i m able to transfer from pendrive to ipad. How do I fix it.
I really want to know how to transfer photos and videos that are already in the photos app in the ipad to the files app...if you know I would really appreciate the help ...

Is it possible to transfer 70gb of music from old cd collection that is on a spinning hard drive to an iPad Pro? Many of my cd’s are not on Apple Music and out of production. I’m deciding between iPad or or a MacBook Pro.
I have a sandisk extreme pro v2 1 tb but connecting it directly in ipad pro m1 in thunderbolt port is not recognize. Do i need a thunderbolt dock to power it up so ipad can recognize it?
Mine stopped reading after iPad is 16.3
Can I save my photos and videos from my iPad to the hard disk or I can just save files? , And can I put a password for the hard disk? , can I bring a cable which has one side for iPhone and another side type-c and move the photos and videos directly from iPhone to hard disk?
you missed formatting to FATex on a MAC or PC prior to use on the iPad.
My external hard drive did not appear on my ipad; i can hear the external drive (1T) spinning, and I also at the same time charging my ipad pro and it is not showing up on my ipad; I tried with another external drive 10T (with external power adapter), it shows up on my ipad pro but disappear sometimes later, so the drive was on and off on my ipad, idk why
Can I load my 2,000 pictures and videos on my Apple I Pad to DVDs?
Do you have videos about Lightroom for IPad? Your video was best one for showing attaching two external HD. Now need to find out how to use LR on IPad with them!
I do. Check out courses.jeradhill.com
What dongle device are you using that is powered by house/wall power?
Man sandisk it suck when it pair with ipad, many my footage get corrupted
Apple always make using any type of drives like Thumbdrives or pocket drives a HASSLE, where I need to either update some driver or or app to read the drive. where Windows will read it RIGHT AWAY no need to usually install any UPDATE. I hate Apple products for doing this. while I love using Procreate on my IPad... I have issues trying to save files to a Thumb Drive or Portable Pocket SSD drive. I even have bought many adapters for the iPad Ports . such as Lightning to USB or USB C to Lightning. I have a refurbished Ipad Pro 3 12.9 and it still wont read ANY drive I connect. a HUGE PAIN IN THE @ss!. any tips ? I have tried to update any drivers for the apps or IOS for iPad. @JeradHillTech any other suggestions? thanks in advance.
When I open files in my ipad pro I dont see my movies and pictures and dont know how I can move Them to my external harddrive. I see the harddrive+
thank you so much for this video you just made. you helped me save a lot of money by not buying macbook, where i can use ipad instead. your looks made it a lot easier as well : )
Do you do video editing on iPad?
Does this work on iphones aswell ?
USB-C iPhones, yes.
I’ve completely given up on SSD external drives for my iPad.
The Samsung T7 touch can’t be used unless you have a Mac to access the software so if anything goes wrong you can’t go into settings.
I lost all my saved files.
Instead I just save to iCloud and the storage on my device.
I will never trust or use an external SSD again
