great video, though I don't believe at any point in the video did you suggest what format the hard drive should be in, so that the iPad recognizes the drive when connected; mind answering the question? thanks
I bought my new I pad back in April to avoid having to share our laptop with my wife who uses the Mac Book Pro for her business. I have my own you tube channel and the videos also use up a lot of storage space. I thought at the time that an I pad would be the ideal solution to my problem. I am wishing now that I had never seen this thing. Apple, as good as they are, could have and should have done better. There is no reason for this to be so over complicated. I movie on the laptop and I movie on the I pad are two completely different systems. I am thoroughly discouraged and ready to part company with Apple!
Great video as always! I would like to ask you for advice. I have two Hard Disks (formatted in exFat) that I normally use on a PC. I tried to connect them via the Hub to the iPad (Air m1) but they turn on without the iPad recognizing them. How could I solve? I also changed the adapter but nothing. I state that until some time ago they were read without the slightest problem.
Nice video bro. I just started uploading my art projects to RUclips and running into storage issues for obvious reasons. This is perfect because I’m only using my iPhone and iPad Air with lumafusion to produce.

I don't think it'll ever work as a standard storage device per say. It will probably always act more like a thumb drive for backing up files and moving them off the device. Apple could change that though

Thank you for this video!! You answered every question I had except one: I saw that you transferred a photo from the external drive to the iPad Photos app, but can you transfer a video file also? Would it go to the Files app? For example, I have an MP4 movie file on my external drive and want to watch it on the iPad Pro -- can I move the video file, unplug the drive and watch it on the iPad? hi Omar I liked you informative VIDEO. But to it is not clear to me about the name of the cable you used to connect iPad to Samsung SSD. Also, using this connector is it possible to play a VIDEO from SSD to the iPad. Again what is the exact name of the connector? Thanks.
Even with a hub with power I'm having data corruption saving to an external spinning hard drive. There are no error messages, but 90% of large files saved to the spinning drive from the iPad are unreadable later. This doesn't happen with SD cards and SSDs on the same hub. Not sure yet if it's the drive or a general problem. Ipad Pro 2020 12.9". The hard drive is a Seagate Momentus 2TB formatted as exFAT and works fine everywhere else.
Do you have any tips for holding your iPad in your hands while using an SSD? With the cable sticking out of the side it’s really uncomfortable. Right angle cable or a dock?
Thanks for the tips video - helpful for me while I'm considering to buy either the iPad Pro or a MacBook Pro as my next Apple purchase. What format you use, I`m trying to hook up a 2.5 toshiba 4tb HDD with and without a hub power hub but the Ipad gives and error and can`t read the HDD. My samsung TabS7 reads the HDD with no issues without a hub even....
Yes..you can. You need to download all movies from iCloud first to your device and then transfer them to the external storage whichever you have. Double check before you do this.
Informative video. Thanks. Just one query. Does the iPad support the format of the SSD / HDD? Or does it require reformatting into, say for example, ex Fat or Fat? Please let me know. I'm planning to buy an iPad Pro.
I am going to purchase a Ipad Pro I love this feature I am curious though. Should I go for the 256 or settle for the 128? I feel like the 256 gives more flexibility but at the same time I plan on doing anything heavy duty (design work) with an external harddrive handy. So, what do you suggest, 128 or 256... or higher?
Thank you for the excellent video. Question: I am trying to get photos off my ipad pro to anexternal drive so I can add to my PC. Would I be better off using the hub and downloading photos to a thumb drive or just buying the little ssd drive?
When you say PC, you actually mean a windows PC correct? Not a mac? Either option works fine, neither is really better. If you're on a Mac, you can just air drop the photos wirelessly. But if you are on a Windows machine, then flash drive or ssd drive both would work.

Is there a cable for lightning to micro B? I can't find it on Amazon. I have one of the original iPad Pro with a lightning connector. I wonder if I could hook up an external drive to that, without having to go through a hub.
There are Lightning to USB type C which SSD drives usually use. But there are actual Lighting Flash drives that can go directly into the iPad Pro with lightning as well.
@@omarcorrea I have a few of those usb sticks with a built-in male lightning port, but I wondered if there was a simple cable with a male lightning at one end, and a micro b at the other, so I could plug in my external passport drive, without going through a hub. Because of your video here that I watched yesterday, I bought 2 - USB C to micro b cables and they came in today, and works great! 🙂
I connected my WD My Passport yesterday. While moving a video into the iPad Pro, it hanged and I had to remove the HDD. This corrupted my WD HDD. Btw my iPad Pro is connected to power thru the magic keyboard and I was using the Apple 3 in 1 adapter.
I don’t want to ruin my HDD by improperly ejecting it from my iPad. It makes a high pitch whine noise every time I unplug it (which is not a good thing, but it still works well)
*im talking to an apple support rep right now and he says the iPad Pro does NOT support direct connection of SSD* So it’s really a luck of draw if your ssd works or not with an iPad
Can i still do this even if I don't have an iPad Pro? I bought the standard model 8th gen iPad, so can I still do this with a Lightning to USB A adapter? I have a 5 TB portable hard drive (not an SSD), and I would love to be able to use it with my new iPad. Anyone's help would be greatly appreciated. Also how much would a hard drive drain my iPad's battery?
I have a brand new 5tb WD portable hard drive that my iPad Pro 4th gen will not recognize even though I formatted using ezFat. The drive does work because my desktop sees it and reads and writes to it without issue. My question is does the iPad Pro have a HD size limit that would cause it to not recognize the drive? Appreciate your videos and also any assistance with this issue.

@@omarcorrea good news. I swapped out the cable for a high speed data cable and it’s working now. Many thanks for the video. Was really helpful.
Can you post a link if I can purchase one somewhere? I have never seen it.
It makes a high pitch whine noise every time I unplug it (which is not a good thing, but it still works well)
Mine won’t show my drive. I have an iPad Pro 2021 and a WD My Passport drive. I use a hub but it does not pop up. Do I need to do something first?
All my external drives say they read only? any idea how to fix this?
*im talking to an apple support rep right now and he says the iPad Pro does NOT support direct connection of SSD*
So it’s really a luck of draw if your ssd works or not with an iPad
What dio you do to solve it? Same issue here.
Can you keep all your epub books in the hard drive and link it to iPad and read it?
I dont believe so, but I haven't tested this myself
Can you transfer files from icloud to the external ssd?
Hi Omar, will an external HD with password protection work too?
I tried to connect my samsung external HD M3 portable 1 tb. But did not work. I used the Levin adapter USB type-C hub pro. Even if I add power in the Levis . But I could connect my usb. Do you know my external had did not work in the iPad pro?
My iOS 14.7.1 doesn’t show an external hard drive. Any tips?
Hello! Please help me with this question: when I connect the ssd t5 to the ipad, I take off the photos, check - he sees them, turn off the power, disconnect the ssd. Then I go in and some files weigh 0kb and I can't see them. How to fix it?
can u copy song ? & movies from drive to iPad ?
Hi Omar, i was hoping to ditch my old MBP and buy the new iPad Pro. I was going to use two 6TB drives (1 being redundant) to hold my photos/videos etc. How would I be able to copy one 6TB drive to the other using the iPad? Is it possible to connect both at the same time?
He's too busy to answer you bro!
Is it possible to use an external SSD with RUclips eg to download content?
What about playing videos, please? Bc u can't play any until u share it to a specific media player u have (one by one) which is annoying when u have so much videos.. isn't there a way to choose a default media player for these videos so we can play them immediately from the hard drive on the iPad?
If u didn't get it sir, just try to play a video from the hard drive on the iPad
So which iPad Pros don't allow external hard drive connections? Cause I've seen so many people complain that iPad Pros don't allow this!!!
