Does the Lacie 5TB External Hard Drive Work with iPad?

- In this video I unbox and setup the Lacie 5TB external hard drive. Contrary to my statement at the beginning of the video, this is NOT a solid state drive. Instead it is a traditional spinning disk hard drive.

Thank you so much for this! My husband was so dissapointed and frustrated that the drive wasn’t working. I offered to have a look and your video was the key! Thank you again; he’ll be so happy! ❤️ kind regards from the Netherlands
Scribblebug I’m so glad it helped!!!
@Scribblebug 77 did your husband get the drive to work???
Waffle Square yes!! Thank you for asking; actually I got it to work by following your instructions so when he got home he was so relieved he could transfer quite a bit of his photography. So thanks again! ❤️
That’s great news! You’re very welcome.
Now that’s what I call informative video!
Sam thank you for your kind comments!
VERY INFORMATIVE
👏🏼👏🏼 such an informative video! Glad I came across this! 😊
Thank you for your kind comments.
Thank you for "doing the hard work" for us.
I would have been super frustrated with it and just returned it if it wasn't for this video.
Thank you!
Laura you are very welcome! I’m so glad it helped!
A big thankyou, just Formatted a Mac Lacie 2TB by deleting and reformatting to ntfs in windows 10
Thank you it worked perfect for me. This is great for the old iPad pros that use the operating system OS13.1 and up
You are very welcome!
This was very very helpful . Thanks a lot
You are quite welcome.
Enlightened. Now I am going to format my LaCie 2TB with my Mac and then I will hook to my 2018 model iPad Pro 11. Cheers!!
Fantastic!!
This was very helpful. Thanks!
You are very welcome!!
THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO! Seriously, I was doing some research and am so glad you created this video. Have you noticed any data loss or quality of your photo/videos now that you’ve been using it for a while? I was afraid that the different format may mess with the data that’s put on it. I’d love to hear your feedback now months later. I was wanting to purchase this drive because it’s basically the only hard drive that’s an full aluminum body.
@? No problem whatsoever with saving/transferring to the Lacie drive. To be fair, I haven’t loaded any files from the drive back to my iPad since the making of this video. I have only used the Lacie drive for writing.
Waffle Square Hopefully it wouldn’t pose any issues. Technically it shouldn’t, but you never know. 😂 I’m just glad I saw your video. Usually when I want to “bend the rules”, I can’t ever find anyone that’s done it before me. Quite unusual that they don’t make it officially compatible with iPads. Especially when they claim to be an Apple exclusive.
Will I get ipad pro 2020 run 2tb seagate hdd?
that's so helpful! thank you!
Bruce you are very welcome.
Just got my new 4th gen ipad, finally got my cable, hooked up my lacie rugged annnd here I am watching your video. So need to reformat now ... and the vicious cycle of no macbook but yes have ipad continues! (Emoji)
@chrispony5000 it is so annoying that the very powerful iPad is still not a standalone device. The Lacie drive is worth the trouble in my opinion. I use it constantly for storing photos and video (as well as pdf files, etc). It is much faster than the WD My Passport I have used for years and best of all works right through the Files app.
@@wafflesquare I've been using lacie for about a decade now. Have some WD hd's also. Prefer lacie. MacBook pro became ancient and then broken. Its been a few years of difficulty accessing my files - looking forward to exfat reformatting! I'll just have to borrow friends old mac that I refused to take possession of! The nonsense continues ha ha.
@@wafflesquare thx for you're reply and your work here as well!
You are a good Dad.
Cruncher Block thank you!
Great video! Thank you!
You are very welcome!!
Great video! Thanks!
Dana you are very welcome.
I had the same problem, then I found the drive open in my iPad Pro FOLDER.
Anyone tried on other format choices?
The question is how do you unmount it from the ipad???? The ipad doesnt have a way to unmount. Last time i just unplugged a hard drive attached to my ipad it caused an error on the drive where it took like 5 minutes on my computer to for the drive to recover.
Great point. These drives have updated technology where they don’t have to be “parked” like the drives we grew up with. Since the recording of this video, Lacie now makes drives specifically for iPads (mobile IOS) which no longer have to be formatted in XFAT. I also use this actual SSD drive by Crucial that are fast: amzn.to/48giEKc
I have connect a number of different hard drive to my iPad Pro 2021 and other than supping external power all connected, including my WD drive, also use these drives with my Windows computers, no not own a iMac yet.
Charles thank you for sharing.
the key part of this video appears to be at about 6 minutes - you can backup from ipad to la cie but first you need to reformat the la cie using a mac. I believe that is the conclusion
Is it possible to run two mypassports through the iPad? I am moving data off of one onto another. My passports are 1T and 2T. Ultimately I want the music on the 2T and photos video on the 1T. Thank you, great video.
Ashleigh I have only been able to write/pull data to/from the MyPassport drive via their app. Perhaps if you link two drives to the app it may permit a drive to drive transfer.
I have an iPad (Nov 2021) A 2062. When LaCie 2TB mobile SSD is connected using Apple 1619 link and EXFAT format the blue light blinks and keeps blinking and never appears in LOCATIONS. On my Mac it appears in Finder with a solid blue light. Do I have to buy another iPad! Do I return the item? As you say if it will work and store Mac data. At £160 it was expensive but cheap for today - if that makes sense. Great video thanks.
I recently purchased a 2TB drive from Amazon. The item page and the packaging both say “works with iPad” and has a symbol on it now. The drive came pre-formatted for IOS as well. If you don’t have those markings on your packaging, I would consider exchanging it for one that does.
Can this drive plugged into my iPhone so I can view the files on my phone? Using a using a type C to lightning cable.
No. I tried it a few weeks ago for another viewer and it doesn’t work with a lightning cable.
@@wafflesquare thanks guess I’ll go back to my wireless pro. Being able to save a sd card to a hard drive without a computer and view, organize, and download files from my phone is so convenient since I don’t have a laptop. Just wish WD my passport wireless was more durable with some kind of rubber bummer only the SSD versions have them.
Hello! When you use the product not loud? Thank you!
It is almost completely silent.
Thank you for your video, but can you connect it to your iPhone directly?
LeeLee all of the iPhones in our house have the lightning port, not USB C. I happen to have a USB C to Lightning cable for my drone remote. My iPhone with that cable does not run the Lacie drive. I do not know if a newer iPhone with USB C would run it.
thanx for the video. I bought myself 2 lacie 5tb disks. I formatted the way you said. put some files on it. plugged it in to my Ipad, and it showed up there. However, when I plugged it in my macbook pro again, my mac did'nt see the drive anymore. I had to mount it to see it again. I thought to myself. Maybe it is a bad drive. Let's see how the other disk does it. I have the same problem. Any thoughts on that?
Michiel maybe formatting it to xfat only works for iPads
@@wafflesquare can you still acces it on your mac?
I only use it with my iPad but I just hooked it up to my old MacBook running OS X El Capitan 10.11.6 is it functioned with no problem. I opened both video and jpg files with no issue.
Can this be usED with my iphone7?? I have so many videos and pictures i keep getting erros when i load them on my pc or flashdrives. PLEASE SOMEONE LET ME KNOW :)
No. I tried it a few weeks ago for another viewer and it doesn’t work with a lightning cable.
That’s a hdd not solid state!!! There’s a couple of SSD versions 512, 1tb, 2 tb. Personally I own the 1tb space gray version ssd and it works flawlessly. I also have the 1tb Sandisk extreme and same thing. Stay away from hard disks
@kidco you are absolutely right. I make that discovery during the video and correct myself at the end.
Could you please help me? I’m losing my mind over here.
I have the exact same problem as you had, except my 5TB HDD is from Seagate.
I formatted my hard drive from NTFS to exFAT (using a windows laptop but that normally shouldn’t matter).
I tried putting it in directly into the iPad Air 2020 with a usb c to usb a cable from Belkin. It turned on and started spinning but my iPad Air 2020 doesn’t recognize it. It just doesn’t show up in my files app.
Just as you I thought it needed more power so I tried putting it in a powered usb hub and then connecting it to my iPad, once again it didn’t work. I have tried everything and I’ve searched the entire internet for solutions but nothing works.
When I stumbled upon your video I really thought I finally found my solution, because you went thru the exact same problem as me, but for me this does not work.
Could you please help me out? Is it just the brand Seagate that’s the problem then?
It’s really frustrating seeing it work for you and doing nothing for me.
By the way: I loved the video, it’s very informative and the quality is great too. Keep it up! I immediately liked the video and subscribed to the channel.
Petru first I would try formatting the drive on a Mac. If that doesn’t work I would search the Seagate website for troubleshooting. It seems like you’ve done everything right.
This was very helpful and it created a couple of questions for me.
1. Can you upload ipad files from the Lacie to your mac?
1. Can you leave files on there while editing them? Like pages documents?
Thank you in advance.
Christine it does work with my older MacBook Pro and our iMac desktop. As for your second question, I’ve never tried to edit a document on the drive. I use it strictly for a clearing house after I’m done with a file.
@@wafflesquare Thank you for letting me know. I'm fairly new at external drives and I could use all the help I can get. Have a great day😊
It's the operating system. I have the same problem with my two Seagate drives and my iPad. They work fine with Windows, but the iPad doesn't recognize them.
I’m now on my third Lacey drive. Two have required formatting to xfat and one came pre-formatted for iPad. All have worked great on my iPad Pro.
I formatted the external hard drive on ExFat and transferred the data to the hard drive, but the external hard drive did not work on the iPad Air 2 (iOS 15) . What should I do ?
yesido gs12 otg adapter lightning … I use it
My external seagate 4 Tera
I’m sorry. I don’t know
does the 2TB work with the 8th generation iPad?
I have no idea.
Thanks
You’re very welcome
Now that it’s formatted to use with your iPad, are you able to use it with your Mac as well?
Yes
@@wafflesquare Thanks!
@tbl911b8 you’re very welcome.
Does this external hard drive work with iphone?
No it doesn’t.
Hi handsome! is it just save photos and videos? Can I save games and other apps (adobe illustrator, photoshop, good notes...) on iPad with LaCie?
Ali I believe you can save any file onto the drive.
Side not! On a 2017 second gen iPad Pro 12.9, with the lightning port, the iPad does not provide enough power to start the drive up.
So which version iPad Pro?
@samanimeguy23 any iPad Pro with a USB-C port rather than the lightning port.
Can you transfer from your iPad to your Mac using this Lacie?
Yes. We have an older desktop Mac with standard USB ports and it works great.
@@wafflesquare Thank you!
NOT an SSD.
That’s right. I clearly make that correction in the video.
and just another reason apple got 100% wrong when they said iPad will replace your laptop 🤣🤣🤣, may just as well use tomato instead iPad
It is aggravating that you still need a laptop/desktop to download firmware for cameras, format a drive, and above all to add cards and ending links to RUclips videos.
This would works better on an Android device😂😂😂 without apps
