Finally! Thank you for this video - Mine works now on my non-pro iPad using my lightning phone charger cord, Apple camera adapter and a power storage pack I already have. This did not work with my lightning phone charger cord plugged into my usb wall phone charger. Powering down my PC for a while, using ipad exclusively and needed to find a way to access files on thumb drives through ipad only. This is it! Thank you thank you!
Thank you so much for all the info in such a well-detailed video. I couldn't get my iPad to read the contents of my USB key, even when it was being charged by the lightning cable, and I couldn't figure out why. Turns out it's because it was formatted using NTFS. Your video really helped. Thanks a ton!
The use of a USB hub with power (such as the one used in the video) makes the use of an Apple Lightning to USB 3 Camera possible. At this writing shopping for a Lightening to USB 3 Camera is easier to find than the Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter (such as the one used in the video). The lightning connection is being phased out. I updated my iPad Air 2 early in 2020, which turned shopping for cables into hunting for cables. But this video gave me enough information to know exactly what my options were for getting this to work. I found the Lightning connections and the thumb drives and have successfully moved my photos from my iPad. My thanks to you Pete.

What kind of power banks do you recommend. There are so many and you didn’t say the name of yours. A power bank allows me to have power to my iPad without the ac power connection, correct? Will they all work with my iPad or are there different types. Will I also need to purchase a cable?
Hey there. I really like the ROMOSS power banks that Amazon sell. Here’s some reviews. And yes you’ll need just a regular charger cable, unless you get the cable included charger. ruclips.net/video/I9H1vxiiilY/видео.html

I have an iExpand. With a slider switch on the top, you can have either a usb or slide it back and have lightening connector. In the side there is a slot for a micro SD card which you can put into a regular size SD card holder. It works a treat and I use mine to transfer photos to my laptop and to my iPad via the iExpand. Just look for time 2 iExpand on Amazon or whatever. It doesn’t need any additional adapter to work either. There are others, but the Time2 iExpand size is dependent on your choice of micro SD card.
Works like a CHARM! I wanted to play a game with wireless keyboard and mouse and the mouse has a usb inside it I got it out and I played with keyboard was so FUN!
Depends on the card it uses. And your iPad. For lightning you’ll want the genuine Apple Lightning to USB 3 adapter. For USB-C there are a bunch of options. studiolivetoday.com/gear

Hi Pete,. I live in NZ and cannot buy a lightening USB adapter with the charger connector anywhere. Please could you let me know where you got yours or at least what brand you use. Need to study using my iPad as my laptop has died. Please help. 😪🐎🐎🐎
Hey mate. I use and recommend the genuine Apple Lightning to USB 3 adapter. This video will give you more info - ruclips.net/video/qt6ZczdUdV4/видео.html It’s available at Apple Stores, Apple online and not really anywhere else in AU/NZ.
Something to share, initially I had some issues to detect my external hdd and after some troubleshooting, make sure: (1) The external hdd/ssd is using exFAT file system (2) The exFAT allocation unit size need to be 1024KB or smaller, Windows10 default allocation unit size for exFAT is 128KB when formatting disk Ipados14 will not detect exFAT with 2048KB or above allocation unit size, as of the time I've added this comment :)
This is such important info that should get a full RUclips video. I've been looking everywhere to find why I can't use my NTFS WD My Passport portable hard disk. Thank you for your info @Fariq
Hey there. No, unfortunately it will only provide power to the devices connected to the hub. However, the hub I recommend actually has a fifth port on top which is just power which you can use to connect to the Lightning port on your Lightning to USB 3 adapter. ruclips.net/video/iUJAVGHXnMs/видео.html
Hi Pete! I have an iPad Pro 12,9 second gen and have the exact same adapter as you. I am at the latest iPad OS software and have plenty of storage. I cleared the memory (with a memory app), I cleared all notifications and safari history. I restarted the iPad and followed your instructions step by step. When I connect the lighting power to the adapter, the charge goes intermittent as if you plug and unplug the power. Also that notification goes on and off just as the charge. On my iPhone X, it doesn’t even register that it’s plugged in to charge, so I used the wireless charger and nothing happens. The thumb drive does not appear in the folder. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
Same happened to me, it is because your charger is not working properly, and it is not giving off enough power to the adapter for it to work, sometimes a usb drive will show up, but when trying to save files on it, those will be shown as corrupted once you try to visualize them on other devices, also you need to format the usb drive you want to use as EXFAT it is the only format that allows you to write on the drive from the iPad, if you use other formats you can view files and copy from the drive to the iPad, but not create, copy or write anything into the drive
Hi! I wanted to ask something, I have a pendrive and an adapter, I can move the files on the pendrive but at a very slow speed, to increase the speed should I change the adapter? (Honestly I don't know the model of mine, but it's one of the very small classics with which you can only connect the pendrive) Thank you
Thanks for this video, timing good for an upcoming vacation trip! Question: Does the larger capacity power bank provide enough juice to power an external HDD hard drive? Trying to weigh the pros and cons of power bank vs powered usb hub. Thanks!
Hey there. I haven’t actually got an external spinning drive working yet, not the USB powered ones anyway. Mains powered spinning drives formatted as FAT are fine. I’m doing some more experimenting in the coming week.
Thanks for your reply. Another QQ, if I use a powered USB hub and connect a SD card reader and an external drive to it, can the iPad be used to transfer files between those 2 devices? Basically using the iPad as a video terminal? Thanks!
What file program do you use to transfer files on the iPad. I noticed that apples file doesn’t show extensions that show enough data to pick the right files. I also noticed most apps like TicTok cannot see the files on the reader. Do you always have to transfer them?
Hey there. Speed is not fantastic to be honest. I haven’t measured it, but if you’re transferring very large files I would recommend something like the WiFi Drive option in the AudioShare app.
5 лет назад+3
On non pro iPads is USB 2.0 speed. On pro ones USB 3.0 up to 600mb per second.
What a load of faff, powered hubs, adapters, chargers, reformatting all before you even start moving the files over, think I’ll just buy the Windows Surface Pro after learning this.
Thank you! I think I know what I need now: I will receive a new iPhone 13 pro in a few weeks (upgrading from an old and tired iPhone 7). I want to transfer photos stored on an external hard drive (WD My Passport) straight onto the iPhone photo library locally. I think this should then automatically back up onto iCloud, am I right? There will be a large number of photos (I think it's about 40gb). Any recommendations or link to a different video of yours to ensure I'm successfully tranfering the pics? (I don't have a well enough functioning laptop, so I really hope I can go straight from external hard drive to iPhone). Thanks!
Hey there. It’s still not super intuitive to be honest and Google Photos works well for this too. But yes, as long as you have enough iCloud storage to backup your photos they will be available everywhere.
I have a iPad Pro 9.7 inch 2016 I would like a SD card reader so I can down loads my photos to my iPad could you advise me on what to get, with out spending £££ also con you down load your photos of your ipad to put on a SD card as well. Any help would be appreciated 😊
Hi Cheryl. In short, you’ll need the genuine Apple Lightning to USB 3 adapter, for reason I show in this video - ruclips.net/video/3B7VPYe5rZc/видео.html They do cost more than third party devices but are worth it for the reliability.
I feel like you started in the middle. What is that home screen? I don't have that. I have IOS 17 on a 10.2" 8th gen iPad. I have that adapter, and I can use the adapter to charge the I-pad, so it sees the connection, but there's no notice or file showing up. What's next?
@@PeteJohnsMusic thanks for getting back to me. Sorry if I sound like an idiot, so that means that I won't be able to use a USB stick in the device? also what does file support mean please? 😅

*instead using official apple lightining to camera adaptor can i use lightining to USB cable in powered USB hub for data tranfer* *PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE REPLY*
No, you will need a genuine Lightning to USB adapter for a reliable connection from USB to lightning.
Usb hub is only power charging.. usb adapter has proprietary connections..

When transferred does it stamp the original dates or the date it was transferred.
Transferred date I’m afraid. Using iCloud Drive is better as you’ll retain the original dates.
Apple: _"Our most powerful iPad EVER!!!"_
Lol! Can't even power a USB thumb drive xD
It is a wee bit stunning isn’t it? 🤔
spector969 me either , got the spinning beach ball ///. I need to get things off then back on , I got a MacBook but it’s obsolete, i been an iPad man for along time now ! - not looking good so far
Please could you tell me if it is ok just to disconnect the pen drive while it is displaying its contents on the iPad, or is there process for ejecting the pen drive, as I believe there is on a computer?
There isn’t any eject process as such. I just ensure any transfers are complete and usually close out of the Files app.
@@PeteJohnsMusic Thank you very much for your reply. It was very helpful.
Great video! Very informative! I just ordered an OTG adapter with the lightning port for power so it was nice to see I chose wisely. Thanks again! P.S. I also already have the powered usb strip so I’m good to go on all fronts.
Excellent! Sounds like you are all set there Ron.
This video will give you more info - ruclips.net/video/qt6ZczdUdV4/видео.html
It’s available at Apple Stores, Apple online and not really anywhere else in AU/NZ.
@@PeteJohnsMusic thanks so much have ordered one on line you rock. 😁🐎
Something to share, initially I had some issues to detect my external hdd and after some troubleshooting, make sure:
(1) The external hdd/ssd is using exFAT file system
(2) The exFAT allocation unit size need to be 1024KB or smaller, Windows10 default allocation unit size for exFAT is 128KB when formatting disk
Ipados14 will not detect exFAT with 2048KB or above allocation unit size, as of the time I've added this comment :)
Thanks for the additional information my friend. 👍
This is such important info that should get a full RUclips video. I've been looking everywhere to find why I can't use my NTFS WD My Passport portable hard disk. Thank you for your info @Fariq
Can you also move ipad files to the usb drive?
Yup you sure can. Check this page for more info studiolivetoday.com/usb
Thank you Pete , you'r fantastico. Explaining so much and so easy to understand.
Thank you my friend! Appreciate it. 🙏
@@PeteJohnsMusic I have iPad Pro. 4th generation 12.9 ‘’ I do not know how to download iOS it is not in my update
Can we use a usb gamepad or a joystick as well?
Sort of. Some apps support this. Bluetooth controllers are easier.
Hi can i use the apple lightning usb adapter for printing??
(Our printer is kinda old that its not compatible for airprint)
Hey there. I haven’t tried it personally but have heard some USB printers might work.
Great video, I have an iPad Pro 10.5. What external hard drive would you recommend with at least 4tb?
Hey there. I just grabbed a Seagate 5tb portable drive that seems nice as fast and seems like it will be reliable. amzn.to/3hhcmRu
When the powerd usb hub is connected, does it also charge the ipad ?
Thank you
Very strange? You are using the genuine Apple Lightning to USB 3 adapter?
Pete Johns Yes I am using a genuine Apple Lightning to USB 3 adapter
Same happened to me, it is because your charger is not working properly, and it is not giving off enough power to the adapter for it to work, sometimes a usb drive will show up, but when trying to save files on it, those will be shown as corrupted once you try to visualize them on other devices, also you need to format the usb drive you want to use as EXFAT it is the only format that allows you to write on the drive from the iPad, if you use other formats you can view files and copy from the drive to the iPad, but not create, copy or write anything into the drive
Go to the Apple service they’ll definitely help you
As I watch your video I noticed your layout on your iPad. How did you create the 2 column layout?
Hi! I wanted to ask something, I have a pendrive and an adapter, I can move the files on the pendrive but at a very slow speed, to increase the speed should I change the adapter? (Honestly I don't know the model of mine, but it's one of the very small classics with which you can only connect the pendrive)
Thank you
I would recommend using some sort of cloud storage these days. USB drives in iOS are pretty slow and clunky. studiolivetoday.com/usb
can this be used to plug usb headsets as well to an ipad pro?
Hey there. Yes, but keep in mind you’ll need the genuine Apple Lightning to USB 3 adapter
Any adapter with a headphone jack works.
It there any procedure to safely remove usb?
No. iOS doesn’t have the same requirement as Mac. Jut snake sure you have completed any transfer and to be safe close out of the Files app.
Thanks!
Howdy. Yes, I have tested this and it is possible, however is quite slow, especially if you are transferring large files.
Awesome! Thank you!
You’re welcome.
What file program do you use to transfer files on the iPad. I noticed that apples file doesn’t show extensions that show enough data to pick the right files. I also noticed most apps like TicTok cannot see the files on the reader. Do you always have to transfer them?
I tend to use Files most of the time. You can use something like Documents by Readdle which works quite well too.
Hey what’s the speed on the file transfer
Hey there. Speed is not fantastic to be honest. I haven’t measured it, but if you’re transferring very large files I would recommend something like the WiFi Drive option in the AudioShare app.
On non pro iPads is USB 2.0 speed. On pro ones USB 3.0 up to 600mb per second.
Pete Johns 3000 photos takes a few hours
Can drag and drop files from the ipad on the usb stick?
Hey there. Yes, you can copy to and from USB drives. More info is here - studiolivetoday.com/usb
Does this work on iOS 14? It doesn’t pop up on my iPad
Yup. It should work just the same as iOS 13.
It’s very helpful. Thanks very much!
You’re very welcome my friend. I hope you get value from the other videos here on the channel and consider subscribing. 👍
Thanks

Does copying files work two ways? Like pendrive to iphone and vice versa
Yup. Can work both ways. studiolivetoday.com/usb
It doesn’t work for me. It doesn’t say the “needs more power.
This video might help - ruclips.net/video/WV4E_8UHCjA/видео.html
If it is a pen drive it must be formatted as macOS Extended Journalled. (HFS+)
Can we tranfer files from ipad to pendrive..🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Yup. ruclips.net/video/U9FkeTt9dNc/видео.html
What a load of faff, powered hubs, adapters, chargers, reformatting all before you even start moving the files over, think I’ll just buy the Windows Surface Pro after learning this.
Yes, it’s a little less than ideal, but an improvement on no USB file support we had previously. If it’s not for you, I can appreciate that.
Which usb flash drive would you recommend for 2021 for a iphone/ipad that can be use for audio files??
Hey there. I really like this one as it has both USB-A and USB-C connectors - ruclips.net/video/_BapmrFC7Zw/видео.html
So, Apple iPad cannot mount Apple formatted HDDs… Just absurd!
Any standard Mac formatted drives are indeed supported. Sorry I didn’t mention this. Check out this video for more information.
@@PeteJohnsMusic do yo

Please stop talking with your hands!!!!!
Gotta have some passion and expression right? 🖐 🤚
Can I hook up a Blue Yeti mic, headphones and USB drive with a 5th gen iPad, like in your video?
Yup. This video will show you how and what you need. ruclips.net/video/54XHAYDvHps/видео.html
Apple is so far behind now it's insane, my galaxy s20 is more powerful 😂. Feel bad for all the people who got hooked into apple.
That’s why we are so lucky to have choice! 👍😎
Thanks for this. I thought I had to buy a flash drive and they can only be accessed via apps
That was the case in the past but since iOS 11 the Files app has allowed for more universal support.
So we can use any pendrive as long as power up using charger?
Howdy. Yes, and as long as they are formatted in a supported file format. This video has more info - ruclips.net/video/gwNqV1W3fPU/видео.html

Hi Cheryl. In short, you’ll need the genuine Apple Lightning to USB 3 adapter, for reason I show in this video - ruclips.net/video/3B7VPYe5rZc/видео.html
They do cost more than third party devices but are worth it for the reliability.
I didn't think I'd last any where near 8 mins on this subject. How wrong could I have been! Great vid!!
Nice one! Glad to hear it helped.
I feel like you started in the middle. What is that home screen? I don't have that. I have IOS 17 on a 10.2" 8th gen iPad. I have that adapter, and I can use the adapter to charge the I-pad, so it sees the connection, but there's no notice or file showing up. What's next?
Maybe check out my web page here for more up to date info. studiolivetoday.com/usb
I'm planning on getting the ipad air 10,9 2020 but it's not in your list does that mean that I won't be able to use a usb stick at all with it? 😊
Yes the newer iPads all run iOS 14 so will have USB file support. Might be time to update the lists!
@@PeteJohnsMusic thanks for getting back to me. Sorry if I sound like an idiot, so that means that I won't be able to use a USB stick in the device? also what does file support mean please? 😅
I have 6th generation ipad tablet ,what is external ssd capacity maximum storage capacity acceptable please tell me??
Hey there. I haven’t fully explored this but it has worked with all sizers that I have tried. It is more about the format of the drive. ruclips.net/video/WV4E_8UHCjA/видео.html
Thanks for a great tutorial. Wish you would’ve connected an SSD just so I could see.
It looks almost the same. Just make sure it’s formatted as exFAT.
thanks John...thats the good news for me to choose right adapter

Hi, love your channel and I am trying to find a system that will connect my drone footage and iPhone footage to an external hard drive . Is this possible with the powered USB set up that you have laid out here? Can I plug the card reader in and transfer to an external drive all plugged in to the powered USB through the iPhone?
Hmmmmm…. Haven’t seen get transferred from a card to an external drive directly, but technically it would be possible with a genuine Apple Lightning to USB 3 adapter and a powered USB hub? studiolivetoday.com/usb
Hi Peter, just an update to my post from 2 yrs ago.
I have updated my iPad air 2 to an Air5 and the air 5 does not recognize the adapter. The usb powered hub is no longer working.
Apart from buying another powered USC - c hub, is there any other adapter that you are aware of? I would like to use an adapter that also provdes power... TIA.
PS. have you made an updated video to allow for usb-c?
Yup! I replaced my genuine Apple Lightning to USB 3 adapter with the one I show in this video and left everything the same. Works a treat! ruclips.net/video/3Zyb1ISy3wk/видео.htmlsi=FDEXylju4xQLkag_

this is so helpful! just to confirm, will this all work with an ipad 8? the most recent ipad?
Yup. 100%. studiolivetoday.com/usb
I think this is good to know ! is possible to plug the usb to a printer ?
I have been using WiFi printers for years so haven’t actually tried connecting a printer via USB. I’m not sure it would work as most printers require specific drivers.
i have a ipad air 4 and i have a third party adapter and it works fine. i guess the lightning cable isn’t strong enough. just something to put out there incase you think you have to have the charging thing on it
Nice one. If it works that’s good. 👍
