I have an iExpand. With a slider switch on the top, you can have either a usb or slide it back and have lightening connector. In the side there is a slot for a micro SD card which you can put into a regular size SD card holder. It works a treat and I use mine to transfer photos to my laptop and to my iPad via the iExpand. @@PeteJohnsMusic Thanks for the prompt reply Pete ! I too went to the Apple Store and nobody could really give me a proper answer. Okey, I found the answer. If I load the flash drive using pc they do not play. I plugged the flash drive into my Samsung galaxy Note and loaded MP3 music, video and documents and work great now.
Apple iOS is indeed slowly catching up with Mac, PC and Android when it comes to file support. If Android has been audio and video recording and editing options, I would certainly consider converting myself.
Very useful demo and thanks for your efforts . Please tell me: - the charging cable supplied with latest iPad Air4 (2020) has what type of USB on either end of cable, - if it is USB-C on both ends, then can this cable work with a microphone having USB-C Port. Thanks, pls do reply Dilip
Depends on the card it uses. And your iPad. For lightning you’ll want the genuine Apple Lightning to USB 3 adapter. For USB-C there are a bunch of options. studiolivetoday.com/gear

Hey there. Are you using a genuine Apple Lightning to USB adapter? Check out this video for troubleshooting advice - ruclips.net/video/WV4E_8UHCjA/видео.html
Hey there. No, unfortunately it will only provide power to the devices connected to the hub. However, the hub I recommend actually has a fifth port on top which is just power which you can use to connect to the Lightning port on your Lightning to USB 3 adapter. ruclips.net/video/iUJAVGHXnMs/видео.html

Apart from buying another powered USC - c hub, is there any other adapter that you are aware of? I would like to use an adapter that also provdes power... TIA. PS. have you made an updated video to allow for usb-c?

I wonder if it would be possible to connect my external optical drive using this method, my external optical drive has a separate power supply (as its an internal 5 1/4 inch drive that i have put in an external enclosure), so it doesn’t draw power from the USB port (Joking)
Oh I’ve tried. Floppy and CD drives don’t seem to okay nicely as they are not “mass storage” class devices. Yes, o wanted to save files to floppy on my iPhone. 😄
Thanks for this video, timing good for an upcoming vacation trip! Question: Does the larger capacity power bank provide enough juice to power an external HDD hard drive? Trying to weigh the pros and cons of power bank vs powered usb hub. Thanks!
Hey there. I haven’t actually got an external spinning drive working yet, not the USB powered ones anyway. Mains powered spinning drives formatted as FAT are fine. I’m doing some more experimenting in the coming week.
Thanks for your reply. Another QQ, if I use a powered USB hub and connect a SD card reader and an external drive to it, can the iPad be used to transfer files between those 2 devices? Basically using the iPad as a video terminal? Thanks!
Thats a bit funny! 🤔 I got my new adaptor yesterday as soon as I plugged it into my 9.7 Ipad Pro Got the message do you want to update your adaptor? 2 minutes and I plugged in an old usb drive without getting any need for extra power message! It works fine. Going to try it on my wife ‘s 2018 iPad and let you know. 😁
What is the firmware and hardware version of the USB3 adaptor mine is 1.0.5 & 1.0.0 under settings-general-about-scroll down only having problems with power bank. Specs say 5.1V 2.4A output
Hi Pete! I have an iPad Pro 12,9 second gen and have the exact same adapter as you. I am at the latest iPad OS software and have plenty of storage. I cleared the memory (with a memory app), I cleared all notifications and safari history. I restarted the iPad and followed your instructions step by step. When I connect the lighting power to the adapter, the charge goes intermittent as if you plug and unplug the power. Also that notification goes on and off just as the charge. On my iPhone X, it doesn’t even register that it’s plugged in to charge, so I used the wireless charger and nothing happens. The thumb drive does not appear in the folder. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
Same happened to me, it is because your charger is not working properly, and it is not giving off enough power to the adapter for it to work, sometimes a usb drive will show up, but when trying to save files on it, those will be shown as corrupted once you try to visualize them on other devices, also you need to format the usb drive you want to use as EXFAT it is the only format that allows you to write on the drive from the iPad, if you use other formats you can view files and copy from the drive to the iPad, but not create, copy or write anything into the drive
Thank you so much for this! This helped a lot! I have an OTG of Type C cable so I thought this might of worked on what I tried. What I did was use a type C female to light-ning male adapter to my OTG in order to connected to my Ipad Pro and that didn't work. Nothing came up. I was wondering what happened even though I was on IOS 13. I looked up on youtube and this video was on top and decided to watch to see what went wrong. But wow i learned a lot. I didnt knew that you needed an official apple device in order to use flashdrive. I'm new with Apple and wanted to type on my IPad Pro 7th generation! Thank you again! Will go and buy that 😁
Glad it helped my friend. Yes, the third party adapters aren’t always the most reliable unfortunately but I haven’t ever had issues with the official Apple versions.
Hey there. Speed is not fantastic to be honest. I haven’t measured it, but if you’re transferring very large files I would recommend something like the WiFi Drive option in the AudioShare app.
4 года назад+3
On non pro iPads is USB 2.0 speed. On pro ones USB 3.0 up to 600mb per second.
You suggested format EXfat. Apple devices recognises this Forman and can read data on the attached drive. But my experience is, one can’t write to this format. It’s always best to format to FAT32. FAT32 has its limitations, it will not accept files over 3.whatever gigabytes in size.
What a load of faff, powered hubs, adapters, chargers, reformatting all before you even start moving the files over, think I’ll just buy the Windows Surface Pro after learning this.
Hi, love your channel and I am trying to find a system that will connect my drone footage and iPhone footage to an external hard drive . Is this possible with the powered USB set up that you have laid out here? Can I plug the card reader in and transfer to an external drive all plugged in to the powered USB through the iPhone?
Hmmmmm…. Haven’t seen get transferred from a card to an external drive directly, but technically it would be possible with a genuine Apple Lightning to USB 3 adapter and a powered USB hub? studiolivetoday.com/usb
What kind of power banks do you recommend. There are so many and you didn’t say the name of yours. A power bank allows me to have power to my iPad without the ac power connection, correct? Will they all work with my iPad or are there different types. Will I also need to purchase a cable?
Hey there. I really like the ROMOSS power banks that Amazon sell. Here’s some reviews. And yes you’ll need just a regular charger cable, unless you get the cable included charger. ruclips.net/video/I9H1vxiiilY/видео.html
Hi! I wanted to ask something, I have a pendrive and an adapter, I can move the files on the pendrive but at a very slow speed, to increase the speed should I change the adapter? (Honestly I don't know the model of mine, but it's one of the very small classics with which you can only connect the pendrive) Thank you
i have a ipad air 4 and i have a third party adapter and it works fine. i guess the lightning cable isn’t strong enough. just something to put out there incase you think you have to have the charging thing on it

Okey, I found the answer. If I load the flash drive using pc they do not play. I plugged the flash drive into my Samsung galaxy Note and loaded MP3 music, video and documents and work great now.
Cool. Glad you got it sorted. iOS supports only FAT and Mac formatted drives which you need to keep in mind. 👍
Thanks for this. I thought I had to buy a flash drive and they can only be accessed via apps
That was the case in the past but since iOS 11 the Files app has allowed for more universal support.
This is why I switched to a Samsung tablet - it has a USB C port. I can use USB drives and a mouse with no problem. Plug and play.
Apple iOS is indeed slowly catching up with Mac, PC and Android when it comes to file support. If Android has been audio and video recording and editing options, I would certainly consider converting myself.
Thank you for taking the trouble to reply
Thank you Weill have another think on it
Thanks for that information about fat format on external hard drive..

Very useful demo and thanks for your efforts .
Please tell me:
- the charging cable supplied with latest iPad Air4 (2020) has what type of USB on either end of cable,
- if it is USB-C on both ends, then can this cable work with a microphone having USB-C Port.
Thanks, pls do reply

So this means I can connect: Wired/wireless mouse and keyboard simultaneously to my iPad running the new iPad OS13 right?
Yes. I’ve only used a wireless combo so far which worked perfectly, bi t of you have a powered USB hub you should done hold to go.
@@PeteJohnsMusic Just wondering, the wireless mouse and wireless keyboard (like Logitech K480) both can connect using Bluetooth at the same time?
Yup!
Hey Pete....this helped a lotttttt

I wonder that ipad pro can transfer word or power point files from pendrive to ipad?
Yes. Any standard media files including documents can be copied in iOS 13 using the Lightning to USB adapter.

Hi can i use the apple lightning usb adapter for printing??
(Our printer is kinda old that its not compatible for airprint)
Hey there. I haven’t tried it personally but have heard some USB printers might work.
Hi can you tell me what’s the best adapter for transferring videos/ pictures from my drone to my iPad please?
Depends on the card it uses. And your iPad. For lightning you’ll want the genuine Apple Lightning to USB 3 adapter. For USB-C there are a bunch of options. studiolivetoday.com/gear
Thanks

Pete Johns just one thing, both the powered hub and the adapter are currently unavailable on Amazon. Any other recommendations for stuff that I can now buy off US amazon ?
Even tho I plugged it in it still doesn’t work with power
Hey there. Are you using a genuine Apple Lightning to USB adapter? Check out this video for troubleshooting advice - ruclips.net/video/WV4E_8UHCjA/видео.html
Hey Pete I figured it out, but still think you for the response.
It was because it was a usb 3.0 and only the iPad Pro is compatible with usb 3.0
hello thanks for your video but i can’t find the setting your on now does someone know what things you need to press to get to the browse setting
Hey there. Check out this video for help. ruclips.net/video/bcACnhiUwBc/видео.html
When the powerd usb hub is connected, does it also charge the ipad ?
Can drag and drop files from the ipad on the usb stick?
Hey there. Yes, you can copy to and from USB drives. More info is here - studiolivetoday.com/usb
*instead using official apple lightining to camera adaptor can i use lightining to USB cable in powered USB hub for data tranfer* *PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE REPLY*
No, you will need a genuine Lightning to USB adapter for a reliable connection from USB to lightning.
Usb hub is only power charging.. usb adapter has proprietary connections..

Hi Peter, just an update to my post from 2 yrs ago.
I have updated my iPad air 2 to an Air5 and the air 5 does not recognize the adapter. The usb powered hub is no longer working.
Apart from buying another powered USC - c hub, is there any other adapter that you are aware of? I would like to use an adapter that also provdes power... TIA.
PS. have you made an updated video to allow for usb-c?
Yup! I replaced my genuine Apple Lightning to USB 3 adapter with the one I show in this video and left everything the same. Works a treat! ruclips.net/video/3Zyb1ISy3wk/видео.htmlsi=FDEXylju4xQLkag_
@@PeteJohnsMusic Thanks for that prompt response.
Thank you, I could have saved a lot of time pulling my hair out if I’d watched your video earlier! :D
Haha! Well, I'm glad you found it eventually!
YOU ARE AWESOME, SO COMPLETE, GREAT INFO .THANK YOU.
Thanks for watching!
Does this work on iOS 14? It doesn’t pop up on my iPad
Yup. It should work just the same as iOS 13.
Inserting the flash drive of the burned computer system into the iPad/iPhone, will it become the use of the computer system on iOS? (similar to a virtual machine)
No. I don’t believe that’s possible without some third party software or significant skill.
Apple: _"Our most powerful iPad EVER!!!"_
Lol! Can't even power a USB thumb drive xD
It is a wee bit stunning isn’t it? 🤔
spector969 me either , got the spinning beach ball ///. I need to get things off then back on , I got a MacBook but it’s obsolete, i been an iPad man for along time now ! - not looking good so far
I wonder if it would be possible to connect my external optical drive using this method, my external optical drive has a separate power supply (as its an internal 5 1/4 inch drive that i have put in an external enclosure), so it doesn’t draw power from the USB port
(Joking)
Thanks!
Howdy. Yes, I have tested this and it is possible, however is quite slow, especially if you are transferring large files.
Awesome! Thank you!
You’re welcome.
There is also lightning port flash drive on amazon
Nice one. Yes this one is pretty cool / ruclips.net/video/Vk3pgwzW7jA/видео.html
can this be used to plug usb headsets as well to an ipad pro?
Hey there. Yes, but keep in mind you’ll need the genuine Apple Lightning to USB 3 adapter
Any adapter with a headphone jack works.
They’ve updated the usb 3 adaptor! No more need for any extra power! Well done Apple!😁
They must have seen your video Pete! Thanx mate!
Oh really!?!? I haven't tried in the last few days. Let me give it a go now.
Alas... I'm still getting the "not enough power" message on the flash drives I'm trying on my iPhone XS and my iPad Air 2. 🤔
Thats a bit funny! 🤔
I got my new adaptor yesterday as soon as I plugged it into my 9.7 Ipad Pro Got the message do you want to update your adaptor? 2 minutes and I plugged in an old usb drive without getting any need for extra power message! It works fine. Going to try it on my wife ‘s 2018 iPad and let you know. 😁
What is the firmware and hardware version of the USB3 adaptor mine is 1.0.5 & 1.0.0
under settings-general-about-scroll down
only having problems with power bank.
Specs say 5.1V 2.4A output
Squidlips 08 same firmware and hardware as yours 1.0.5 and 1.0.0 model A1619
Thank you
Very strange? You are using the genuine Apple Lightning to USB 3 adapter?
Pete Johns Yes I am using a genuine Apple Lightning to USB 3 adapter
Same happened to me, it is because your charger is not working properly, and it is not giving off enough power to the adapter for it to work, sometimes a usb drive will show up, but when trying to save files on it, those will be shown as corrupted once you try to visualize them on other devices, also you need to format the usb drive you want to use as EXFAT it is the only format that allows you to write on the drive from the iPad, if you use other formats you can view files and copy from the drive to the iPad, but not create, copy or write anything into the drive
Go to the Apple service they’ll definitely help you
As I watch your video I noticed your layout on your iPad. How did you create the 2 column layout?
Hey what’s the speed on the file transfer
Hey there. Speed is not fantastic to be honest. I haven’t measured it, but if you’re transferring very large files I would recommend something like the WiFi Drive option in the AudioShare app.
On non pro iPads is USB 2.0 speed. On pro ones USB 3.0 up to 600mb per second.
Pete Johns 3000 photos takes a few hours
You suggested format EXfat. Apple devices recognises this Forman and can read data on the attached drive. But my experience is, one can’t write to this format. It’s always best to format to FAT32.
FAT32 has its limitations, it will not accept files over 3.whatever gigabytes in size.
Good extra info. studiolivetoday.com/usb
Why the URL?
It doesn’t work for me. It doesn’t say the “needs more power.
This video might help - ruclips.net/video/WV4E_8UHCjA/видео.html
If it is a pen drive it must be formatted as macOS Extended Journalled. (HFS+)
What a load of faff, powered hubs, adapters, chargers, reformatting all before you even start moving the files over, think I’ll just buy the Windows Surface Pro after learning this.
Yes, it’s a little less than ideal, but an improvement on no USB file support we had previously. If it’s not for you, I can appreciate that.
So, Apple iPad cannot mount Apple formatted HDDs… Just absurd!
Any standard Mac formatted drives are indeed supported. Sorry I didn’t mention this. Check out this video for more information.

u have a link?
What kind of power banks do you recommend. There are so many and you didn’t say the name of yours. A power bank allows me to have power to my iPad without the ac power connection, correct? Will they all work with my iPad or are there different types. Will I also need to purchase a cable?
Hey there. I really like the ROMOSS power banks that Amazon sell. Here’s some reviews. And yes you’ll need just a regular charger cable, unless you get the cable included charger.

Apple is so far behind now it's insane, my galaxy s20 is more powerful 😂. Feel bad for all the people who got hooked into apple.
That’s why we are so lucky to have choice! 👍😎
Hi! I wanted to ask something, I have a pendrive and an adapter, I can move the files on the pendrive but at a very slow speed, to increase the speed should I change the adapter? (Honestly I don't know the model of mine, but it's one of the very small classics with which you can only connect the pendrive)
Thank you
I would recommend using some sort of cloud storage these days. USB drives in iOS are pretty slow and clunky. studiolivetoday.com/usb

i have a ipad air 4 and i have a third party adapter and it works fine. i guess the lightning cable isn’t strong enough. just something to put out there incase you think you have to have the charging thing on it

Very informative. Not perfect but it works. I can now transfer my photo and video albums.

Hello! So this would work to transfer video clips from the flash drive, to my iPad?
Yup. Any supported media can be transferred without any problems.

Hi. Would I be able to transfer my music sheets saved in forScore to an SD card? Thank you.
Not sure sorry? Not super familiar with the app. Maybe ask over at the Create Record Release Facebook group at createrecordreleaae.com, or the Discord group here - studiolivetoday.com/discord.
When transferred does it stamp the original dates or the date it was transferred.
Transferred date I’m afraid. Using iCloud Drive is better as you’ll retain the original dates.
Can we use otg lightning and than USB to HDMI for connecting to projector
You’ll need a genuine Apple adapter for any Lightning based connections. studiolivetoday.com/usb
Hello Pete, great vidio but as of now it is outdatet, do you know if it works with IOS 16 too?
Yup. Very little has changed with USB drives and iOS since iOS 13. Http://studiolivetoday.com/usb.
