This review was really helpful! I just ordered one for myself. I recently had a baby and have COMPLETELY filled my phone with photos and videos of her! My windows computer hasn’t been letting me upload them, I’m thinking because there are too many.. So I’m hoping and praying this works for me!!
Hi the same thing happened with my son... i filled my phone with pictures of him and when I used the regular lightning cord to transfer to my pc it would disconnect. Please share if it worked for you. Thank you 😊
same happened to me, can't transfer from iphone to mac because too many items, so I hope this works, at that speed it could take weeks though, hopefully it's faster.
I agree with you with iCloud.. I wish there would be an option that will pop up when your deleting something on your iPhone and if you want to save it on your iCloud..
I can't find it. It seems like iCloud has some settings that are configurable and I see a message about deleting in icloud but? It feels confusing and I can't reliably see where that happens. Look also on Apple ID settings for iCloud, not just the phone? I backup notes in an email account but I think my phone and iCloud are not totally mirrored. I used up all iCloud space but can't read clearly what is in there or choose what to let go of.
@@TeresaDLeecomedy all you do is turn on Optimise Storage under iCloud settings for Photos.
Thanks for the advice. Because of your video, I bought one of these. I needed to get my pictures off my phone before I took any summer trips and filled it up with new memories.

Is it possibly super slow because the photos it is backing up aren’t actually ON your device? Rather, they are streaming from iCloud, via your device, to the drive? iCloud is a time-murderer, and it drives me bananas!
I was trying to find out for about an hour if I can play .mkv from this flash drive directly, finally this video gave me the answer, thanks! My main problem is that HD movies won't fit on my iPad storage, this drive will hopefully help me watch HD movies on my iPad on the plane.

It's slow on some devices. As it depends on the amount of files that you have. As it has to scan the whole library. Then index them. And as you said. It's looks to see how much power the device is at.. It will work slower as to not deplete your battery. As the last thing you want. Is for the thing to shut down in the middle of a Backup...

The new luxe version has usb-c as well so it’ll work with my iPad Pro usb-c iPhone 14 pro and future iPhones when they change from the lightning to usb-c like the ipad pros have changed.!!!

Does iXpand software maintain the _original_ file creation dates - - or write them to the new location using the current date?
yes even i want to know this , i have more than 30,000 photos all are jumbled up now .... cant assemble it date wise
Dave, are you going to talk about how the drive rename your file to some funky naming convention? I find it irritating because I no longer know what files is what. Is there a way to get around this?
So I watched another review of this product where the guy only demonstrated transferring files when all we really want to know is if our 64 GB iPads can finally play lots of movies from this. Thank you for answering that part.

Hey David, great video!! I have a question that would be much appreciated if you were able to help me out. My question is - are you able to select what gets uploaded onto the drive from your iPhone or does it just grab every single bit of data and stores it on there immediately? This is a main concern for me because although I would want everything backed up, because of my occupation I need to only have hi-res videos on the drive in order to free up space on my I phone

Great instructional video. I also bought the iXpand Flash Drive for my IPad Pro but it is painfully slow to transfer large files from the iPad to the flash drive. I wanted to free up some space on my iPad but copying movies or videos is extremely slow and difficult.
Blame apple, lighting is limited to usb 2 speeds
Just picked one up. It transferred 64 GB (4500 photos) in about 22 min. Not bad...

I have a question when i want to open the pictures on my laptop there are icons among pictures there that don’t open. What are those? Is it possible these are pictures ? If yes then if i delete pics from my iPhone, i can loose the pictures which i cannot open on my computer
I have been scratching my head as to why I pay Apple each month for storage (2TB plan) when I only have about 500Gbs in total saved. I did the math and some research and bought this exact product for ~$60. It basically pays for itself in a few months after I cancel the iCloud subscription.

Ah, that stinks. Do you still have your old phone? Even if the screen is dark it might still be accessible when plugged in. There are a variety of devices on the market for backups now too, and, of course, software programs too. Good luck!

You can save the photo to files app (in iCloud) and then delete the photo in the photos app which it will delete in the photos in iCloud as well, but it will save in files on iCloud Freeing up the phone space but still able to be downloaded from the cloud. Very easy just select photos or videos then click share button, then save to files, then make a folder and save it to files in ICLOUD and youll be good to go!!! Stay safe hope someone figures it out very easy and it works like you think it would have. Just not through a “backup” It’s a different method.

Lightning on one end, USB-3.0 on the other. My computer only has USB-C. So to get that to work, I needed an adapter.

Very helpful video, fellow David! Few questions. I’m interested in this device solely to transfer music files from my Apple devices, to the flash drive itself. Can such be done? Will it rename the files, or keep the original titles? And lastly, can the flash drive be inserted in to devices such as a home stereo, to play the music? Thank you for your time!
Being able to transfer music onto it is a function of the app that's saved the music. A Spotify offline playlist, for example, is locked up (I believe) so you can't access those files to copy. In terms of plugging it into a stereo, well, if you use the SanDisk backup software it might not be compatible. If you copy files yourself and they're all in .mp3 or .aac (perhaps) format, it should work. Haven't tried what you're suggesting, which is why I can't be definitive with this answer. :-)
Great YT video, I have the IXpand Flash Drive Luxe, has lightning & USB C connector, Xfer rate for me was really fast.
great video. this sounds awesome, I hope it works for tens of thousands of items. I tried using usb cable to mac from iphone, doesn't work, too much data to transfer, so this could be the solution.
INCORRECT.
You can’t plug this into any high-end iPad since 2018, and more recently, ALL newer iPad models, though you can get cheaper USB A > C adapters, but then you might as well just use any USB (no lightning port on ALL NEW iPads.
I think it's pretty obvious that if it's a lightning connector and you have an iPad with USB-C then it's not going to work. But I appreciate your DRAMATIC use of caps.
Hi thank you for the video as looking to purchase. My iPhone has set my photos to low resolution with iCloud will that still allow me to transfer my photos still on to the drive. Have over 9000 photos.

I've heard that the reason why it is so slow is because there's only two iOS devices that have usb 3.0 capability; all Mac models after 2012 and iPad Pro after 2015 have USB 3.0 ports/capability.
The rest of the iOS device line up including recent iPhone models can only use USB 2.0 speeds.
I'm skeptical of that, Lindy, because all of these features are on-chip and if Apple's designing its latest devices, it's harder to get old chips with previous generations of USB than to get the latest gen. Do you have a source for this?

Heads up, if you're trying to transfer videos from your phone to computer with this device, the video may be choppy. I've tried 3 times to transfer videos and each time the replay on my mac is choppy.
Thank the you for your informative video. I liked the feature description and mention that you can record video straight to the ixpand drive. I watched this because I was looking for a comparison between this drive and the other Sandisk ixpand drive that doesn't have an adapter and looks like a straight stick. I wonder which is older, if there is a different version of USB, if the menu to manage features is the same, and what the switch looking indentation on the side is. There's also a curved designed one that seems to stack the lightning connector on top of the usb connector and I wonder if it is as tedious and uncomfortable as it looks to me?
The otherone before this one is better in quality and look better for me but both are excellent.

Far as I can tell, it works in parallel.

One thing to maybe look into is that if you copy a folder with other sub folders, photons, files, etc…, directly to the drive from a windows computer, you won’t ever be able to see the folder but you can search for that folders content and sub folder and see them and access them only from the search results. You will never be able to delete them so the space they take up will never be recovered. So be careful with putting folders and files onto this drive from your windows computer. You may permanently use up your drive space.
What ? Are u joking?? Mo! i need a system which has many folders and subfolders otherwise its useless to me. u mean u see the folders / subfolders on your computer but they disappear when u put the drive into your iphone????
A word of warning; do not use Delete when copying. I used this feature once after copying my new photos, and the feature deleted ALL of the photos on my phone. All of them.
The reason for slow transfer speed is the lightning connector is only rated for usb 2.0 speed!

@@AskDaveTaylor Exactly what I said! I even spoke to apple again today and they confirmed it again. I had to request for them to download all my pics for me and send them to me so its easy to put onto the drive straight from the email. What a mess. No more icloud for me.
Bottleneck is the apple lightening port. As long as it is a similar speed as syncing with cable to to computer, you are getting the fastest speed the port on your device is capable of. The only faster way is using WiFi… I think. Years later, still simple and lovable. Just slow
Yep. When we switch iPhones to USB-C I am hopeful that slow port gets a 10x speed improvement, or more!
@@AskDaveTaylor I keep hearing iPhone will have a proprietary cable… it will still be a type-c connector but a bus that is basically the same slower lightning speeds
Can you transfer the files in Andriod devices ? Or the window desktops ?
You can use wireless charger… just got the flash. It seems to have made duplicates and you run it a few times, yet as you stated, it’s supposed to pick up where it left off and find new data. Hmmm but Thanks for this super informative vid. Will sub🫡

So glad I found you! I have a question & hope you can help me. I just bought the iXpand SanDisk Flash Drive Luxe 256 gig and love it. Got all the photos & videos backed up from my iPhone 13 Pro.
I’ve never used a MacBook but my daughter has one so I plugged the flash drive in to her Mac. All the photos are there & easy to open.
Problem is I can’t figure out how to open the video files on the Mac. I can see that they are there, but they are in faint text and I can’t click on them.
Any idea how to open these? They are all .mov files made on my phone, so should be iOS compatible.

I have a question since I’m not super tech smart… so I bought that Qubii Duo because I have like 30,000 photos 🤦♀️ and I have an iPhone and my mom has an Android … so thanks to you I now understand Qubii but I came across this Sandisk product at the store and now I don’t know which one I should go with? I’m sick of paying iCloud monthly. So in your opinion which product do you think is best?
Also I’m still unsure if the phone keeps the photos on the phone (once it’s backed up) until I choose to delete them myself? I just don’t want to back everything up and then go on my phone and have no pictures if that makes sense?

What happens when your phone is too full to complete the backing up process. For some reason my storage is full and it’s not allowing me to completely backup all my photos. “System data” is taking up most of the room in my storage. Pls help

Just do manual backups then of what doesn’t absolutely need to be in the internal phone storage..
If I download the lphone pictures on a windows computer, does the pictures remember the original time and date or the date changes with the date I download them? It happened before with other method of backup on Windows.
Can I make folders like I was able to with an older SanDisk drive?
Of course. It's just a flash drive, it appears on your computer as an external storage device. Whether individual iPhone or iPad apps can understand the file structure is something else, however, but that's on the app, not the iXpand.
Does it also store the data of where the picture was taken with the location stamp?
That's all the EXIF information and is part of the photo file, so if your camera captures and stores that in the file, yes, it should transfer across intact.
I am using this to backup my ipad photos, I have over 9000 of them. I have a PC, and when I view the the USB directory on my computer, I noticed that its in years and months. Which is good for some but I would like just the photos and NO folders of years and months. Way to much clicking to find a photo! Any idea of how to remove the folder option?

Just bought it and downloaded app and this doesn’t do what the older thumb drives did, which is to plug in, choose photos and download chosen photos. This device really sucks! I’m going to have to return it and find something else. I really needed it to download photos for my attorney, not my entire photo files!
