I’m at the same dilemma. I’ve got an iPhone XR; I e purchased all the correct items shown, reformatted my WD Easystore with no luck. To reformat the Easystore required me dumping all of my stuff already stored on it to a computer. Help by finishing or adding another video.
It also helps if the external hard drive is formatted in "exFAT". If the external hard drive is set to NTFS, or some other format, the iPhone will recognize it, but it will only be in "Read-Only" mode. You can access files, but you can't transfer or copy from the iPhone.
Thank you so much….you have no idea what your comment did for me. I have been up for hours trying to figure this thing out until I saw your comment. I appreciate you a ton 🙏
Amazing! after viewing a few videos of super annoying people trying to explain the process of direct transfer to a hardddrive I found your post. Your advice and instructions are perfectly clear and to the point. I got the exact hub you said and it works perfectly!!!! THANKS!

Super big thanks. I so needed this for my yoga recordings. Also helpful to then use the content in I movie for editing. I am grateful, thanks for sharing.
Whew! I'm glad you finally unplugged that lightening power supply cause I was really needing to know that. Thank you. I just ordered your entire set up on Amazon and Apple. Appreciate your efforts!
I cannot thank you enough for creating this video; you are a Godsend! I'm heading deep into the wilderness for 50+ days to hike & take videos with just my iphone, an external hard drive, a power bank & my atolla 4 port usb hub, and was wondering how to get videos off my camera onto my hard drive without cellular data, wifi, or a computer and without having to return back to civilization. How this works without electrical power: hook the atolla to a powerbank with USB adapter; plug the atolla USB into the passport, and plug the external hardrive into the atolla. Voila! God bless you & thank you for this video!! Will be giving you a huge shout out of gratitude on my channel in an upcoming video I create talking about my gear for my upcoming hike.

I think I finally got this to work thanks to your help! Transfer speed is pretty slow, but this is a good test. I only wish that there was some sort of progress bar to indicate how long a transfer will take.
I cured my issue! Items: iPhone 13 Pro Max (iOS 18), Atolla 4 port USB 3.0 hub, USB micro SD card dongle, 2x SeaGate 2TB External HDDs, Apple USB dongle. USB Hub holds the 2x HDDs, and USB micro SD holder. 1 slot is spare (unused). Apple USB dongle connected to iPhone 13. The tail USB (male) on the hub connected to the dongle. Goto iPhone FILES. Full control to copy and move data from the micro SD to the HDs. The hub power source is via one of 2 110v outlets in my F150 (or house power). This will definitely allow me to power the Atolla hub permitting transfer of photos from the micro SD to either of the 2 HDDs. And, that is exactly what I wanted! Keeps me from having to pull out the laptop nightly on my 7-8 day drive to Alaska! I’ll most likely get another 2TB SG HDD (matching the other 2). Many thanks for the video. It got me on the right track!
this is exactly, brand for brand, what I’m trying to do haha. thank you SO MUCH. I’ve been doing research all morning and figured this out but finally a video just literally showing me it will work is so validating I now know the conclusion I came to is correct and I can actually pull the trigger and buy this stuff!
Hi thank u for your insight. USB powered hub & USB charger are 2 different things!, finally I get it. Please I can not seem to have an option on photo app to download t hard drive, just iCloud Drive. Any more insight?
While im happy that you got it working for you and your needs, my question is why isn’t your phone charging when plugging in either the lighting cord or the powered hub into the adapter? Something else is going on because connecting your lighting cord should have given you all the power you needed or at least started charging your phone, but not even the hub got your phone you charge which is weird.
Recording video , editing video on my iPhone, you aren’t lying about storage. I have 200 videos on my 256gb iPhone and I only got 50gb left. I could transfer anything to my ESSD using my laptop , it kept giving me errors. I’m gonna try this out, thanks!!
thanks for the tutorial. i already had the 2TB WD My Passport SSD and bought the exact same USB hub as you. works perfect. this is the only way to get the drive to show up on an iPhone or iPad. the drive always worked fine on my iMac.
I have 2x SeaGate 2Tbs. Both work fine. The only Apple item I own in my iPad and iPhone. My Dell laptop can format multiple including exFAT. It reads and write to it as well! Laptop is maybe 6 years old now. This video helped me immensely. I am planning a rather long drive Colorado to Alaska via Canada, in late spring 2025. I will video, photo, and photo Timelapse via GoPro Hero’s 11 and 12. This method will allow me to transfer media without having to set up my laptop daily. My F150 has 2x 110v 3-prong outlets, so that helps as well! Remove micro SD from GoPro, dump into one of 2x Seagate 2TB HDs, SD micro back into GoPro, ready for next day drive!
@@mrjeff2396 i used it for a trip also, Antarctica and Easter Island. i don't own a laptop so i needed this solution to backup my camera to my iPad. remove SD from camera and put into reader. backup to SSD and wipe SD. ready for more pics. :)
@@dave928 my issue is I have only 346Gb of 512 left open on the phone and iPad has 131Gb used of 256. The Micro SD cards I intend to use on my trip will be both 256Gb and 512Gb’s. All I really need to do is, each evening, simply use either Apple device (above) to simply pass thru the data to the HDs, not the tedious process of DL into a device then pass on the the HD. I really prefer one shot at passing data through the iPhone of iPad nonstop to the HD! That is my quest! Otherwise it becomes more tedious and thus forces me into purchasing additional SD cards for the entire 7-8 day one way journey. My photo captures will be, examples only: Camera 1: 1 photo @ 15s intervals (to be stitched into a photo Timelapse, and Camera 2: 15s video @ 1080p or 2k at 1 minute intervals. Cameras are GoPro Hero 11Black and 12Black. One mounted on front bumper and other top center windshield. Both powered only via USB, no battery to cut heat as much as possible. Both controlled and monitored via GoPro QUIK app. Using the QUIK app I am able to monitor the SD card’s usage status. The short snippets also help to keep heat at an absolute minimum. I’m also trying to keep having to purchase a bucket full of SD micro cards.

A 2 TB Samsung T9 SSD needs an external power source to connect to lightning iPhones, since the lightening port won’t give enough power back to the SSD.
The Lightning to USB3 adapter works kind of like a switch for the USB port, so always connect the Lightning port at last. USB drives that only blink when connected will sometimes come to life when you reset the whole contraption by pulling the lighting and reconnect it to the device… I have a WD Elements 2TB hard drive running on an iPad Pro 2nd gen from 2017. Keep in mind that those drives need a little time to provide their TOC to the OS (up to 30 seconds) until they appear in the list of devices in the Files app…
Hi I have an iPhone 13 Pro and a Samsung SSD, will mine work only with the lighting to camera adapter? If I switch my hard drive into the port, give it power then switch it into my phone?
I have that atolla hub you have to use the USB on the end not the top 4 🤷🏼♂️ those are for mice keyboard exc. U shouldn't need the power in the other adapter either ✌🏻
Great video: I've been looking quite a while for this solution. However, now that I have a Mac, I find it easier to transfer from iPhone to USB 3.0 external hard drive by plugging both to the Mac and using Image Capture (this app comes default with the Mac).
Hi for the No tech folks I missed the part where you went into your browser history to see if the external drive was in your history. You covered your iPhone when you went through to it, I could not see what app or folder you were getting into for your browser. Thanks

Hey my wd is not connecting they the USB cable to my laptop..maybe is not getting enough power? I am very sad...my external hard drive is not even turning on when I plug in into my laptop pls help!!
Hello question: I got the same Atolla USB hub as you, but instead, I tried connecting a lightning-to-USB cable(Amazon Basics) directly from my iPhone to one of the ports on that hub and it’s not working? Is the trick using that official Apple Lightning/USB adapter? (BTW I also have mine plugged into the wall and have a working exFAT thumb drive but it’s not recognizing it.) Would appreciate if you could test/confirm if the Apple dongle is what’s also necessary. I’ve wasted so much money and time trying to figure this 🤬 out. Thank you 🙏
Hi I bought the same Harddisk and USB hub, Connector. I am able to get my harddisk detect but only read only. I am not able to transfer anyhting. Please help.
OMGosh! I've been frustrated for sometime on this. I need to clean my phone, with pictures & video's going to icloud, it's been difficult to figure out how to back up photo's. Thank you for explaining and thank you to your follow-ers for the comments.
Hi, great video thank you. I do property inspections and have upwards of 50 gigs of photo & video on my phone. I'm required to keep all of it for a number of years. I’m paying for tons of iCloud storage that’s going up each month. I have the same WD 2tb storage that you do but am not skilled enough to make the transfer. I feel like this could be my best long term solution and have ordered the two hubs to make it work. If you could do a short video on how to safely move all of the pictures and videos to the hard drive, then delete completely from the iphone and cloud, you would solve one of my biggest headaches. I appreciate it, thanks for doing this one.
Get all the stuff , once you have it plugged in and working it should be simple , which ever photos or videos you want to save just click the share button and click save to files and choose where you want it to save ! Hope that helps ya
I have iPhone 7. It doesn't seem as sophisticated as your newer model so I don't know if I can do it. I have it all plugged in. The Passport is glowing with a solid white indicator, just don't see anything on the iPhone 7 that's different. I don't even know if I have files.
Would you be able to link each of the items you purchased exactly? Either in the description or the comments? I’m not that tech savvy and I’d like to have it exact one to one!
My friend, click on the photos and or videos you want to save to the external hard drive , click the share button and simply click on save to files , and then choose the destination to where you want them to be saved . So in other words , connect the external hard drive , locate and open it in the my files app, then you can create folders in it , so when you choose the photos you want to save just click the share button , choose save to files , then find the folder you want it to saved in and click on it . Hope that helps you out my friend !
Hey T.I.O., question? U wanted to see if the drive stays on the phone, by unplugging it from the dongle? How is that possible? That would mean, it's not connected to the phone, Right? I don't understand? Thanks, appreciate a better understanding.
I purchased everything and it worked but now having a hard time moving the video in my phone into there.... but I can watch video from my hard drive no problem. any suggestions? thanks
Hi, with these steps my WD passport is showing on my phone… however I am unable to move any data because it is showing read only. Please suggest a solution.
The only way I’d be hittin that like button is if you can show me proof that you can export then import files from that drive. BTW, why you breathing hard? You must be proud of yourself for making a new discovery. I did this with my iPhone 6 back in 2015 when my phone only had 16gb of memory. Too bad iPhones won’t recognize very large capacity external hard drives.
Hi I have just tried doing this with my iphone 7 plus, but "My passport" doesn't show up on my iphone.... Does it only work with later phone models? Thank you for your help :)

Would you do a video with this set up and show how to back pictures and files from your iPhone. Great video. I’ve always wondered why you need a computer to transfer pics and then to external drive. And cut out the middleman 👍🏼

Good video, and information, but aren't new iPhones USB C?
does it transfer voice memo files as well?
one of the best video i have ever seen on youtube
Hey my wd is not connecting they the USB cable to my laptop..maybe is not getting enough power? I am very sad...my external hard drive is not even turning on when I plug in into my laptop pls help!!
Can you also download music and movies from your hard drive to the iphone?
NAH HOMIE HOOOOOKED IT THE F UPPPPP 🙏🙏🙏 you deserve an award or something
where is the amazon link?
Hello question: I got the same Atolla USB hub as you, but instead, I tried connecting a lightning-to-USB cable(Amazon Basics) directly from my iPhone to one of the ports on that hub and it’s not working?
Is the trick using that official Apple Lightning/USB adapter?
(BTW I also have mine plugged into the wall and have a working exFAT thumb drive but it’s not recognizing it.)
Would appreciate if you could test/confirm if the Apple dongle is what’s also necessary. I’ve wasted so much money and time trying to figure this 🤬 out. Thank you 🙏
I have the port usb 3.0 high speed Hub . This is not working at all so do I really need to get the one you use ??
A me funziona senza porta usb Atolla quella che usa in video nero e luce blu mi basta il carica del mio iPhone
What formatting does the external HD need to be in?
Hi I bought the same Harddisk and USB hub, Connector. I am able to get my harddisk detect but only read only. I am not able to transfer anyhting. Please help.
I’m not sure , try formatting it to exFat on a computer
OMGosh! I've been frustrated for sometime on this. I need to clean my phone, with pictures & video's going to icloud, it's been difficult to figure out how to back up photo's. Thank you for explaining and thank you to your follow-ers for the comments.
Can you go directly from the camera roll to the external hard drive? If not how do you get your photos in the files folders?
Yes you can , click share and then save to files and then choose destination!
@@TechinItOut100 I did that but my external hard drive doesn’t appear.
@@TechinItOut100 it didn’t worked out for me. The save button was not hilighted
@@itsekka Same here. The hard drive showed up but the save button was greyed
pls share usb hub other than atolla which ll support transfer files...since atolla is not deliverable to my place
What if you plug your phone straight into the hub? Will it work the same ?
I have iPhone 7. It doesn't seem as sophisticated as your newer model so I don't know if I can do it. I have it all plugged in. The Passport is glowing with a solid white indicator, just don't see anything on the iPhone 7 that's different. I don't even know if I have files.
Hi , thanks for the vid. I followed the instructions but the save button is grayed out. Do you know a solution for this?
Try formatting to exFat on a computer then try it
Would you be able to link each of the items you purchased exactly? Either in the description or the comments? I’m not that tech savvy and I’d like to have it exact one to one!
After I get it all connected how do I move the pictures/videos from iphone to external hd? Can you make a video doing that please?
My friend, click on the photos and or videos you want to save to the external hard drive , click the share button and simply click on save to files , and then choose the destination to where you want them to be saved . So in other words , connect the external hard drive , locate and open it in the my files app, then you can create folders in it , so when you choose the photos you want to save just click the share button , choose save to files , then find the folder you want it to saved in and click on it . Hope that helps you out my friend !
Is it possible to use a power bank instead of Atolla? Very helpful your video 👍🏻 thank you!!
Not sure 🤔, I’ll try it out one of these days and let you know !
@@TechinItOut100 thank you so much I appreciate it 👍🏻😊
I guess if it works with HDD then a 512 flash drive will work also 🤔
Did it work?
Is it also applicable on different usb hub ?
would the hdd drive be recognized if it's protected with a password?
Hey T.I.O., question? U wanted to see if the drive stays on the phone, by unplugging it from the dongle? How is that possible? That would mean, it's not connected to the phone, Right? I don't understand? Thanks, appreciate a better understanding.
I purchased everything and it worked but now having a hard time moving the video in my phone into there.... but I can watch video from my hard drive no problem. any suggestions? thanks
I can’t transfer any pictures, the option “save” greys out. What can I do?
Try formatting the drive to exFat first
Hi, with these steps my WD passport is showing on my phone… however I am unable to move any data because it is showing read only. Please suggest a solution.
Try formatting to exFat on a computer first , that should do it
Will a portable one of those power hub usb things work? Rather than a plugged in one?
Maybe 🤔 not sure
Hey, what’s up man bought all the components I need however what screen are you on to see if and when my passport pops up?
???????anyone????
The only way I’d be hittin that like button is if you can show me proof that you can export then import files from that drive. BTW, why you breathing hard? You must be proud of yourself for making a new discovery. I did this with my iPhone 6 back in 2015 when my phone only had 16gb of memory. Too bad iPhones won’t recognize very large capacity external hard drives.
How long does it take to transfer 130,000 photos & videos? (About 140G)
I want to use my iPhone to power my monitor & external drive together, is it possible? What kind of dongle will I need to buy for that?
Hi thanks for the video can i use a older d link hub to get power
Excellent video. Is there a way to transfer images found in iMessages to an external drive?
Save the photo then use the method
@@parmajomm8459 Thanks for your response. Is there a way to select all images?
Hi I have just tried doing this with my iphone 7 plus, but "My passport" doesn't show up on my iphone.... Does it only work with later phone models? Thank you for your help :)
Not sure with the 7 but try formatting it to exFat and then try , sorry I couldn’t be more of a help
Hello Brother..
What should be external hard drive format so that data can be transferred from iPhone to Hard Disk??
exFAT
So annoying that I bought everything and it still doesn’t work for my 13 pro max 😢 I am using a 2T Maxtor hard drive and my phone doesn’t recognise it, although it’s formatted to exFAT. Any ideas will me highly appreciated!
Thank you so much for posting the second video actually showing how to step by step paste and transfer the photos and videos to our Seagate external hard drive . Thanks again and God bless!
can i use the atolla 3.0 (7usb slots) ‘cause the 4usb like yours isnt available to our country. thx you!
Can you backup everything on the iPhone (not just photos and videos but documents also)? Thanks for the video - very helpful.
Yes, you can backup documents no problem. I have an iPhone and iPad Pro and although I used cloud services, I do keep a backup data on my external drive.
Yes he’s right you can , he said it perfect .
Would you do a video with this set up and show how to back pictures and files from your iPhone. Great video. I’ve always wondered why you need a computer to transfer pics and then to external drive. And cut out the middleman 👍🏼
Mmmmm I have a old iPod, which I filled up very quickly. I always wondered if there was a way to have extra music on a external drive....🤷♂️ have you tried that?? 🤔🙏
Thank you. This is exactly what I needed.
Dude. You are a legend. Thank you for this !
When you say an SSD, do you have a link?
I tried all the set up as you mentioned, it did not work ..... is it because The Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter is not original apple's product?
Show us how to actually get the iPhone to transfer videos photos files to the hard drive
It will only allow you to transfer from the hard drive to the iPhone
A sei riuscito?
Unfortunately, I tried everything and followed your steps but it still doesn't pop up on my phone. I also formatted it to exfatt but still nothing. Any advice?
The atolla does not have that extra cable you have so I use my iPhone charge cable and it won’t pop up in folder
So how to do you now back up the photos on your phone to the external hard drive? Need the next step lol
Hey 👋 just click on the photo or where it says share and then save it to the drive it should be there … let me know
It doesn’t say share there.
When you select your photos you will then click the share button and scroll down to the option that says “Save to Files” then you can select your external hard drive.
No working for me. I do that and yes it shows on files my hard drive but when I selected
Okay I got all of that and hooked it up but when I say save; the WD element stays grayed out not blue like the iPhone or iCloud choices
Hello, I did the exact same thing and my phone can finally access the external files… However, its only available in read-only mode and I cannot transfer my pics from my phone. How should I fix this? Please help, thanks!
You may need to format the hard-drive to exfat or some other apple compatible format, using an apple computer beforehand you can use it with your iPhone or Ipad.
Can I charge My phone while I am gonna use ExtSD? & Can I get the Cable Little bit more? Cause I am gonna gaming using THIS, So
I'll use bypass charging + Pc games
( 100GB& 120GB) So I need a lot of storage Charing system too at same time,, & I am talking about Android, Pls let me know
What external drive you would recommend for reasonable price ?
Hi thanks for the video. When you save it in the files folder on the iPhone, can you transfer pics or videos to the camera roll or does it ‘Stay’ in the files folder? Also,.. can you transfer files (pics/videos) from the iPhone to the external hard drive as well? Thanks
This was going to be my question as well, did you actually transfer from your iPhone to your external drive? Thanks to the original poster of this question.
Can you transfer the pictures from your phone to the drive, and back to the phone? I have an iPad that has pictures my iPhone does not have, I would live to finally get them all in one
So I heard I'm supposed to check to see what format my external drive is in first. I heard that I'm supposed to make it exfat for me to see the video from the external hard drive to my iPhone. Is that true or can I leave it in the original format?
Try it first , if it doesn’t show up format it to exFat
Hi bro thanks it worked for me. But the problem it’s only allowed me to see the data inside but cannot do any action, cannot delete or copy or delete. The color to copy or move or save is black not blue so I cannot click it. Please help me with this thankyou before
You must format the hard drive from NTFS to exFAT , you can do it on any computer .
I used a 2TB M.2 NVME SSD in an enclosure and have no problem in it.
