- The ability to shoot ProRes Log on iPhone is a game changer but also at the same time a data eater. Thankfully Apple opened up the ability to record Log footage directly to an external SSD if you need to via USB-C.
I saw @iPhonedo do this and I just had to try it out for myself, and it's perfect.
Check out the original video that inspired me from @iPhonedo

Love this. I can see a lot of photographers and videographers wanting the option to shoot from their phone at the highest quality without worrying about storage. This will be my go to for situations like gatherings where I take a ton of photos and video but plan to only keep select ones. I can easily transfer to the computer for better editing.
I searched and watched few other videos for this but you are the one who did the most simplified yet all inclusive video of how to. Thanks.🙂
I respect that you gave iPhonedo credit. Not a lot of people would do that. This is such a great idea. You know companies are rushing to put this out lol
Thanks my friend. That’s kind of you to say. Yeah it’ll be a mad rush to see who gets to market first.
You just gave a great idea to the whole external storage industry. Soon there will be it with magsafe to go with iphone 15 series
Ordered the SSD, wire and mount using your links. Thanks for all you do. Great job.
That is absolutely amazing! It’s just like the filmmaking part from the iPhone 15 Pro introduction video on Apple. 📱🎥🎞️
If a company doesn’t make a MagSafe SSD they’re missing out.
Call me old, but magnets and storage devices are ehhh...
@@eno88that's with disk drives not flash memory like ssd
@@NicoDa1Well, you are maybe too young, but SSDs are highly sensitive not just to magnets but all kinds of radiation. That is the reason why SSDs are packed to the brim with error correcting algorithms (google it) and are double and triple saving bits and bytes because SSDs degrade already without magnets next to it. That being said, that MagSafe magnets are certainly not great but due to the build in resilience, all that happens is that the lifetime of the SSD degrades faster.
Wait for apple though!
yup....and im going to say 200 usd on that minimum @@shaanmuhammed4380
I’m ABSOLUTELY thrilled that I can use my T7’s with my 15proMax! Now I can TRULY edit on the go with LumaFusion!
incredible setup idea !! Thks
Dude. This looks amazing. Going to try it for a meeting I have next week. Thank you!
Roger: Great idea. The new magnetic ring you recommend (Encased Magnetic Mount 2-pk) is more like a disc than a ring. Do you still attach the magnetic side to the MagSafe area of the iPhone case and then the adhesive side to Samsung SSD? Does it add much additional weight?
There's a newer version of that Samsung drive. the t7 shield. It has a rugged case. it is slightly thicker than the t5, but I think it is a bit wider so the radius of the ring maybe a bit more fitting. but this is a great idea. thanks for this!
The rugged version would be more challenging, because it has less of a surface area than the regular t7 due to the design of the case itself
Absolutely brilliant! Wow 😮
I did this same setup using the recommended magnetic ring from iphonedo and I didn't need to add a zip tie or anything because the recommended magnetic ring from Amazon has a stronger magnet on it. It works perfect and I've tested it on multiple iphones. I'd spend the extra money on the stronger magnetic ring because I hate the look of zip ties or tie downs on this otherwise clean setup.
link please)
I have that exact setup. I thought I was the only one. T7 with a Magnet ring on the back, though I went with a much more powerful magnet ring. I have that same cable too. It works perfectly. And yeah the ring is slightly bigger but who cares, throw some baby powder on the sticky areas that are exposed and you are all set. Also the T7 is a much better drive then that other one.
Hey man, nice video. Quick question, does it work with Samsung T5 as well?
Hi there. Great video...I have a Saumsung T7 SSD and an iphone 15 promax...but I wonder if there is a USB-C flash drive/thumb drive that would be fast enough for Pro Res LT- I don't need the highest Pro Res HQ- so have you tried the SK 512GB Dual USB C Flash Drive, 2-in-1 External USB 3.2 Gen2? It's a USB drive and it has USB C on one end and regular USB A at the other...I wonder if it is really fast for video recording with my new iphone 15 pro max...easier to carry thanmy Samsung T7 SSD. Also I want to keep the weight to a minimum so that I can use the drive attached to the phone while on a small gimbal like the DJI Mobile 6 which can only carry 290grams. Thanks
The sand disk is better for shooting around water and dust or any exterior shooting I believe
thanks dude, been wondering how to do it in a way where there aren't ridiculous cables hanging everywhere
Thank you for the video. I wish I could buy a silver version of that T7 SSD in Germany. I can get only a titan grey, red, or blue one. The titan grey is a bit too dark for summer use. Never mind, how strong is the magnet you're using? Can you trust the magnet to hold the SSD by itself?
MUCH APPRECIATED👌👌👌
Tus videos son tan limpios y bien explicados.
very good, thank you for sharing
Hi, great video! I'm planning to buy an iPhone Pro Max, but I already got an external 1To SSD + iCloud+ with 200Go. Would you say buying a 256Go iPhone is enough, or would you still go for a 512Go?
Now, I need to do this! But, could there still be a way to charge the phone from a power bank??
Thanks for this👌👌👌 If you don’t mind can you link as well the magnets you used, because I thought i has to be a reverse adhesive magnet.
It was just one I had from some accessories. However here is one I’m including in my next video. It’s better and stronger IMO. geni.us/Cmdx9M
Very nicely Done! 🎉
Thank you! Cheers!
There will be cases for this ASAP!
Great video!
thats good. i use a u shape usb c male to usb c male connector.. looks more sleek.
You can get a u shaped usb c male to female male to male, etc and that leaves no hanging wire, also, if you cut the mag safe in half or in quarters, that allow one to have it with no hanging or protruding part, also you can get small portable chargers that have MagSafe inbuilt and then attach the memory to the charger and you have a dual memory and charger back up that will sit on any set up, phone small tablet, etc.
I’ve seen people slip Samsung drives into a magsafe wallet too, so that’s another option depending on the wallet.
Hey Mr Seng, does this setup work with the regular 15? And if not why? (I have the regular 15 and I hope I can use this setup for my filming as well.)
Great tips
Can you use the Samsung T7 shield 2TB external SSD ?
Was told iPhone 15 Pro supports only up to 1TB
Heard the earlier Samsung T7 had issues with erratic speeds and being unreliable for sustained long writes for AppleProRes Log for direct 4K files from iPhone 15 Pro to the external SSD for the original T7 SSD
Heard the T7 Shield was a better ( improved ) SSD to use
Great video
I read that the SANDISK drive draws more power than the iPhone can provide. The Samsung draws less and is compatible. Would be nice to find a cable that is even less obtrusive.
Quick question, I shoot RUclips videos on my phone, and I use the DJI Mic for recording. Is there a way to use the DJI Mic through the USB-C and record on an SSD at the same time using a USB-C hub or something?
Ok I found the reason for thoughs that need this info. It was the cable that came with the drive. Looks like it is to slow. I used the one with the phone and it works.
Great clip for problem solving to simple setup! I purchased the Crucial X9 2tera and Rixmie 40gbps, at 60, 30 and 24fps, and getting pop-up window "slow recording speed - ext. device or cable not fast enough write speed to record ext." Any suggestions?
Is there a reason you didnt use the included Samsung USB C cable? I would think that would have the 20gb spec. I'm pretty sure the iPhone itself on the Pro and Pro Max versions are only 10GB anyway.
Just to make sure, I can just pop that into my phone and dump photos from the phone or do a 3 way mirrorless to phone to SSD?
Pls talk about over heating problem.
Just add a thin cotton cloth between the charging pad and the FineWoven case. My Taupe has no ring mark since 9/23
I have a similar setup to this. bought the mophie snap adapter and applied it to my T7. I cant get the drive to stick to the phone it keeps falling off.
Can you only shoot log to the SSD Drive or can you shoot non-log video's to the drive as well?
Can you use it on the base model iPhone 15? Or is it for pro’s only?
Just curious, won’t MagSafe interfere with the SSD?
This will also work with future Qi2 Android phones since they’ll have the same MagSafe connection
Thinking of doing something like this but worried about the battery life. I'll need a couple of hours recording time. Thoughts on how you could charge the phone off external battery + hook up an ssd at the same time?
Hope this helps to resolve the external battery inquiry. iPhone 15 Pro: External SSD VS Thumb Drive

Can Sandisk ssd connect with iPhone 13 using charging cable only?
Hey! Nice content! Do you know about sasmung ssd t9 4tb connects to iphone 15 pro max ? who knows? cause people say that Sandisk Extreme Pro 4 tb needs more than 4,5 W that is unreal to connect to iPhone 15PM
Does the magnets have any affect on the SSD? Won’t damage the data?
I use type c adaptor. but my hard disk is not detected on my iphone 15 pm. but my memory card is detected. I tried to ask apple support, all they told me is upgrade my ios. any idea sir?
Is there a setting on iPhone 15 to direct the recording to the SSD or is it automatically sent to it?
To get your phone video to record to the SSD are you forced to use "log" only...or can I realtime write @4k hvec or whater it's called? I don't have the phone yet.
try to use that setup with any gimbal. Cosumer definetly should have real solution. How to use it with any phone gimbal< how magnet affect to ssd???? Is it comfortable to use that usb-c cable after you folded it with laptop? Too much "But"
So, can you transfer all your photos one has already on the iPhone??? - I would like to have more space and back up my photos besides using iCloud.
That is VERY ZORZ! Awesome!
Hiii ... ive read about the SSD having lifecycle ? Kinda confuse about it.. but if i buy samsung SSD just backup my phone and video, do you think its okay ? I mean with the SSD life cycle
Can you only record externally in log prores or other formats too?
Great idea, but one issue is running out of battery before your shooting. My 12 Pro will run out of battery a,d with .5TB I never ran out of storage. My new 15 Pro has 1 TB. How do you address the power issues unless you go to a docking station with multiple I/O ports with a USB-C power in port like I have for my iPad Air Gen Pro?? No one has answered that question. Seems like we need a 2-1 USB-c cable that will supply power and well as the video. Just sayin’!
Can i use Samsung T7 Sheild ssd in my iPhone 15 pro? Is password procetion feature in t7 sheild version cause any problem?
Hey Roger! just wanna what type of sandisk is it? I've tried to to click the link but unfortunately it does not exist anymore! Cheers!
great vid
Great idea👍Will the ND filters still fit with this setup?
Coming soon 😎
Just cut the edge off the magnet before you stick it will fit perfet then.
Can you use the same ssd for Mac and android.
Samsung SSD 7 dosen’t work on my iPhone 15 por max, still using thunderbolt 4
Do you have the link for Magsafe Magnetic Ring?
I use to do this but use the t7 shield
Ok what am I doing wrong? I have the Samsung t7 external drive. The apple camera app will record to it. When I direct the black magic app to it. The storage icon in the black magic app starts flashing and i can do nothing with it. I move back to internal and it works. I have looks for answers and cannot find one. Hope someone can help me out. Thank you.
Does the magnet affect the disk?
Have you tried recording to a fast flash drive as well to avoid the SSD "dongle" effect?
I have but the speeds will vary. See here. iPhone 15 Pro: External SSD VS Thumb Drive

Can you also add a link to the MagSafe ring sticker

does it work for iphone 13pro max?
This seems like a great idea. Have you seen anything around using the SSD + an external microphone like a Rode?
Get a small hub.
@@melgross Have you tried it? Most hubs only have 1 USB-C for power and one usable USB-C
@@mauriciovaglieri I wish I could say yes, but my 15 Pro Max doesn’t come in until tomorrow. But I’ve now seen a number of videos by some trustworthy videographers here on RUclips who showed it working. I have no reason to not believe them. I’ve got a lot of hubs here and you can bet that I’ll try a few over the next two or three days. It will be interesting as three are Thunderbolt hubs with their own power supplies. So maybe for studio work they would be good. The others I bought for my iPads and Macbook Pros.
@@mauriciovaglieri and I just realized that you don’t need a USB C port for mics. We’ve been USB A for mics for years.
@@melgross Awesome, thanks for the additional insights, most of my mics are USB C but not USB A, I will give it a try with an adapter or just go for a microphone that's USB A. Appreciate you taking the time and good luck with your new iPhone.
ye but how the magnetic ring attach to the phone
Having it hand out on the side ruined my charging port so no not a good idea! There has to be something better! I’ve got 66,000 photos/videos on my iPhone 15+ that I need to get off and onto some sort of memory, whether it be a flash drive or an SSD card! Any advice?? TIA!
Great video, next time try rendering in 2K resolution (YT Video) This makes the video quality much better. And you will be assigned a different Video codec by RUclips.I hope this helps, thanks again for the video.
Cool!
i'm curious will the magnets damage the drive?
They don’t actually. Standard hard drives they would for sure but not with SSDs.
About that SanDisk drive… there has been a serious problem with recent ones losing all the data on the drive. All WD will do is to replace the drive with another one from the same unreliable series. So beware. Samsung also had a problem with their pro drives a couple of years ago. I don’t remember the model numbers. I recently bought a small Kingston ssd thats 2TB and has a 2GB/s read/write speeds. Seems to be a reliable model. Much smaller than these drives. Was on sale on Amazon for $134. I don’t know if it’s still on sale. Model SXS2000/2000G
I have nothing to do with Kingston, so I’m not shilling for them.
Nice to see you're still kickin' ;) Remember ya from the AppleInsider days. Haven't been in that part of the internet for ages.
Thanks for the tip!
what magnet did you use
It was just one I had from some accessories. However here is one I’m including in my next video. It’s better and stronger IMO. geni.us/Cmdx9M
Do magnets affect ssd drive data? Magnets were used to wipe out conventional old drives before.
Not on SSDs from what I’ve read.
I intend using a Ulanzi iPhone mounting clamp with Samsung T7 Shield, I think there is sufficient clearance between bracket & iPhone to wedge the drive in place. Worth a look 👍
I saw the IphoneDo video but in his he had to turn all the magnets around one by one. You seemed to have the right MagSafe ring without having to do that. Can I ask where you got that from, as it’s not as simple as you would think finding a ring that isn’t the opposite way around with regards to the magnet. Either than or I’ve got it all wrong !! Which is entirely possible. Thanks
I’m also curious about the MagSafe ring used in this video
It was just one I had from some accessories. However here is one I’m including in my next video. It’s better and stronger IMO. geni.us/Cmdx9M
@@rogerseng thanks that’s really helpful !!
Any thumb drive that can work for 422 ProRes 4K 60?
I’ll be addressing this soon. There are some thumb drives that can but IMO the purpose of recording externally is so I can go to edit quickly. The hinder in the workflow would be that the read speeds wouldn’t be fast enough for my liking.
Any link where did you buy the 20gbps Type C Cable, That you used in Samsung T7
How about you read the description?
crucial x9 pro wins hands down. package it togeter with a stretchable magsafe wallet its a game changer
Has anyone tried this on a MacBook? Is the lid magnetic? Or maybe you can use 2 rings facing each other 🤔
I just started watching this and perhaps I need to get to the end of the video to comment but going to anyways. Isn't this all irrelevant if you use the FREE Blackmagic Camera app which allows you to save 4k 60 log footage internally? I personally use this app because I have full control over ISO and shutter angle and set ISO between 1100-1400 which is optimal for the most dynamic range with this sensor. The iPhone camera app does not allow you to adjust ISO, shutter, or save 4k 60 log internally. I only use the native camera app to take photos now and programmed the new side button to open the Blackmagic Camera app for quick access. Add the new Polar pro case and variable nd filter, and in my opinion it becomes the most powerful, thinnest, and lightest pocket camera to exist I think and no funky looking ssd and cable attachment hanging off the back of your phone which will most certainly damage your usb-c port at some point.
Work in iPhone 14 pro Max?
I have crazy idea, if a phone can is constantly charging with wifi or 4G or 5G signal. That would be so great. It wil be more green to the environment
Will it work with 13 pro
Sandisk wont work on 14pro?
I wonder about the effects of reduced heat dissipation from the iPhone because of the placement of the SSD per this solution and the effects of EMI from the SSD on iPhone wireless connectivity. For example, the original Canon R6 mirrorless camera had video recording time limits due to thermal issues.
Good point. Both the iPhone and ssd will get hot during extended recording. On a hot day, the iPhone might even have to be cooled to resume recording or charging.
What happens if i want to plug my microphone in the same port😅
Elephant in the room : HE just stuck a MAGNET to a SSD Drive! 👀 👀 👀 #ohdear -- I would use 3M VHB 'sticks like a boss.
I bought the Sandisk SSD for my 15 Pro Max. When I plugged it in, it did not show up in my files app. I called Sandisk and was told that the SSD had not been tested with the iPhone 15. So, he was saying, or implying that it did not work with this phone. I returned the SSD and got the Samsung T7 Shield. It did show up in my files folder, but there was no way to transfer files from the photo library to it. The T7 had 3 programs on it, one for Android, one for Mac, and one for Windows. The Geek person at Best Buy said it needs a program from Apple to work. So, how do all these people I see doing videos on these SSD's get them to work? What am I doing wrong?
Probably related to the format of the drive.
I would recommend to format the drive into exfat or APFS (apple file system) is faster
CAn you do it with a usb C flash Drive? they come with 1TB ,
You can but it varies in performance. See here. iPhone 15 Pro: External SSD VS Thumb Drive
