Having to copy the files over to internal to have the program start to work on them, and then exporting them again, is still the productivity killer. macOS or most others can work on external media directly, this is still where iPadOS hampers productivity.

Right now most people seem to edit on an iPad just to make videos about how to do it, lol.
As a videographer that does mostly weddings, iPad video editing is a nightmare compared to my PC and DaVinci Resolve- especially with syncing wedding ceremony audio and trying to stabilize footage.
Luma Fusion is quite good for what it is, but “professionals” that edit their whole videos on an iPad in early 2020 aren’t doing very many intricate editing processes. Agree totally with your post.

@@j.d.5709 my videos are a minimum of 1TB.
Please show me a video of an ipad editing a video of that size.
I'll save you the time- it can't, until it can edit on external storage.
No idea the point of your posts. Never said you couldn't edit on an iPad . I said you couldn't edit high level professional videos on an ipad. RUclips vids in general are a long shot away from what those in video industry build.
Let's see you adequately stabilize footage on an iPad. Let's see you edit raw 6k to 8k on an ipad. Let's se you do real audio work with 24 audio tracks in a video.
      Yea, you can't.
Therefore using an ipad for editing adds a million steps and makes it a nightmare. Link all the videos you want, the above can't be done on an ipad and I do those things on every single video without fail.

    • @Unkn0wnC0mmand
      @Unkn0wnC0mmand 4 года назад +8

@OldPossum they do when it's the clients request- either way, I never said my final video was that big.
You do realize that the footag you edit isn't the final render, correct? So if I have 2 terabytes of raw 4k, the final video can be fit on a standard Blu-Ray. This fact doesn't matter if I can't fit all the footage to render onto the ipad at once because the storage isn't enough. Why the hell would I want to do 10 different pieces for a wedding render because my iPad cant hold the raw footage when I could do it at one go on a pc?
You either have no clue how quickly raw footage adds up over a day or more of filming, dont understand the basic editing process, or truly are a "Possum"- in which case you can save us both some time and play dead.

Thanks for the video! I currently edit my photos in Lightroom on my iPad pro just simply because I love the touch interface to edit photos. What I do is dump my images to a Qnap NAS drive over the Qfile app with my sd card connected to my iPad pro. Then when reviewing my photos off the nas I download the photos I would like to edit inside of Lightroom. Once my edits are complete they are automatically uploaded to Google Photos for a nice looking Jpeg image suitable for posting to social media, all while I have my RAW files backed up to the NAS that I can access remotely anywhere as long as I have a connection. I think this is a great way to edit on the iPad pro but I agree with you once I am able to simply just mount my NAS to my iPad remotely and edit off the drive instead of the iPad it would be amazing. Maybe some day!

Apple charges about $150 to go to a 256 gig SSD from the base 64 gig SSD on the iPad Pro. Depending on your needs, it might just be worthwhile to upgrade to the 256 gig SSD to begin with.

That is a critical piece of information. Stay well during our current COVID madness. Thumbs up.

Good stuff! I have a couple questions. 1. What did you format your SSD drive so it works with the iPP? Did you use the Mac OS format or Exfat? 2. The workflow you demonstrated is that more for backing up your files before sending them to the iPP? Couldn’t you have gone from your SD card via the reader right into the Files app and copied your files there? Sorry just thought of another question, 3. Is there anyway to set in and out points before copying footage? Say you had a long clip but only needed a few seconds of that clip? On my iMac I use a program called EditReady for my Sony clips where I can do what I am asking. Thanks!

    TIPS:
-If you are using an iPad Pro with USB C you do not need to have it connected to a power source for the external HDD to work. Mine is 4tb and runs just fine without a power cable on the iPad pro.
    - FINAL; If your external mechanical drive doesn’t show up immediately it means that the iPad OS is doing as Disk Utility scan in the background. It could take between 10-15 minutes depending on how large is the HDD(4tb). Do NOT let the iPad go to sleep during this time, set it so the screen stays ON always.
The External HDD will show in FILES app after that time is pass.... i have tested this and it works every time.

Hi. If you’re unable to edit direct from an external source, why not just import direct from the SD card instead of two sets of copies/movements? I’d have to say that right now the iPad is very impractical for editing because it needs the source files to be local, which is a shame as it clearly has the power to do basic editing and post. I think when Apple have sorted some of these files management issues and as soon as there’s a killer NLE app, many more people will be editing on iPads and iPads will start chewing more into laptop and even desktop sales. Cheers, Dave.

You don’t necessarily need a hub. I have the 256gb and only work with photos so I don’t need to use external drives, but if you have an older 64gb model you could do it in stages - transfer half the files into the iPad storage, transfer to SSD, then delete, and do the other half? That way you just need to carry around the smaller Apple USB-C to USB dongle

At which you could expanded storage just be a tiny little disc like the size fingernail and have a storage capacity from anywhere from 8gb to 1tb. All while not having anything dangling from it or altering the profile of said ipad. That would be soooo great.

Wow amazing video. Can you help me? 😫 I recently started making RUclips videos with my IPad, I use “InShot” to edit but every time I have to download my video after editing I have to delete every app from my iPad. Can I record videos on my iPad, and have it save directly on that hard drive so I can edit on my iPad? Or will I just have to buy a camera to record and edit on a laptops? I really love editing on my iPad and don’t mind recording with it too, if you charge for advice I’m willing to pay you!! I’m not computer savvy but learning. Thank you soooooo much !!!! ❤️

Is that a TiMOVO USB C Hub for iPad you are using? Thanks for your showing this set-up, and suggestion for SSD drive will try it out.

Great video! I would like to ask you for advice. I have two Hard Disks (formatted in exFat) that I normally use on a PC. I tried to connect them via the Hub to the iPad but they turn on without the iPad recognizing them (I also tried recharging the iPad while reading). How could I solve? I also changed the adapter but nothing.

Thanks for convincing me to buy the 512GB iPad Pro. This is a lot of work to integrate into a workflow. I'll just use these devices for backup and transfers.

Thank you for this very informative video. I am in the process of deciding whether to buy a mac mini, a mac book pro, or an 11” iPad pro. I really love working on the iPad, and this helped me go for an iPad Pro 11. 😃

Im looking for a multi connection dock for my iPad pro, I think the one that connects directly into it with no cable looks silly. It looks like you have added a cable between your dock and iPad

After completing the photo edit can you copy/move the photo file back to an external drive? If yes it could be a way of performing initial edit and the files could then be imported on a computer for a final edit - a great benefit on a multi day shoot.

@Noah Herman, Are the reading/writing speeds of the SD card significantly lower than those of the SSD?
    Thanks for the video, btw!

The doqo smartdock looks promising with a built-in 7 in 1 hub plus internal battery as an iPad Pro folio case with keyboard and track pad....time will tell.
