I'm almost 50 years old, thinking about going back and doing a PhD, and you just taught me something profound that 5 decades of life and a Master's Degree in Education never did anywhere near as clearly. Bravo.
Sam, I’m not try to get overly dramatic but your videos blessed my life and really saved me from a life shipwreck. My story. I’m a 42 year old. I just retired from the United States Marines as a senior officer. I have undergraduate degrees in Mechanical Engineering and a Masters in Computer Science. I know how to learn and achieve. However, during my career I was injured in Iraq and have PTSD. Fast forward to now since retiring I’ve been pursuing my long time goal of becoming a dentist. Since it was 22 years from undergrad I decided to take all the prerequisites again fresh to do well on the DAT and well...just be a good student. My first semester was horr-r-ble! I barely passed. Barely passed subjects with skills I demonstrably mastered before. I was depressed and about to quit. I notice on my own how disorganized I was relative to my undergrad. I have a box that contains all my notes and exams from my engineering school. Neat and arranged. Going back to school today I was all over the place; total disaster. I didn’t mention I have 5 daughters now! Lol At any rate the long period of time away from school, the PTSD, the new life responsibilities, and disorganization point to some real executive functioning challenges. I have a much to work on the front but this semester as been so much better. Why? I watched all your videos and it motivated me. I got the IPad Pro 12.9 and I settled on Goodnotes even though I bought both apps. This organization is a game changer. Your video about combining notes, slides, and personal study were phenomenal. I don’t get as stressed out and I feel like I’m actually learning. I’d like to send you a study guide I easily made on Goodnotes; I’m kinda proud of it. Lol. Keep doing what you’re doing. I think you’re gonna be the Khan Academy of executive functioning. 🙏😃❤️ Ron
I watched this video in 2020 and here I am one year later, I am an average student but I used your advice of writing down all the questions and I got 96% this year and understood everything. I just wanna thank you so much. Also I didn't use any iPad just with my books and papers. But now that I got good grades my dad told me he will buy me an iPad. ❤
You need to partner with Apple. You’re literally promoting them and they’re aware!! People from Apple came into my uni (ADL) and actually recommended seeing ur vdos (I had seen your channel when I bought my iPad Pro) great content 😉
Лейла Ахмедова I’m a Med student using the 12.9 inch 4th generation iPad Pro for online lectures(microsoft teams), drawing and just started note-taking using Notability app and i love it so far, it’s just amazing, the iPad is so sleek and thin & seamless. oh and the apple pen is amazing!! Hope this helps.
This is actually such incredible advice. I studied physics and every lecture made me feel so stupid. I thought I was, but 'feeling stupid' is actually the first step to learning. The second step is asking questions, and having the courage to do so. I wish I did this. Brilliant!
I am currently studying physics and start the hardest semester of my degree in 3 weeks and I am definitely panicking! Congrats on making it out the other side.
Maybe it’s that I started college at a different maturity level but asking questions made me feel better. Most of the time everyone didn’t think of asking them so it saved everyone time. Also pointing out mistakes that made have occurred when posting items by the professor. Most of all it engages you in a different way, of course the downside is getting someone of track and things taking longer than they should or having your question avoided and not really answered thus wasting your time.
@@brayan8346 my favorite thing to do is stay after class to listen to the questions other people are asking the professor. Those are the questions that are great to hear because usually it’s a question you wouldn’t have thought to ask but you’re glad you got to hear the answer!
I am a junion taking AP physics in highschool and I wanted to ask how you were able to ask all these questions during the lesson, as well as how are do you not get lost in just making more and more questions if for example you dont understand a topic and that topic is needed to move onto the next topic and since you dont understand it you are then not able to engage in the topics and so on. Should I just make sure I know the topic fully before moving on? or should I save all the questions for later and try and study on my own time?
This is a class that needs to be given every year in school. HOW TO TAKE NOTES WORTH STUDYING!!! The iPad content is great but the method for noting and studying those notes is awesome.
5% explaining how to use Goodnotes and Notability on the iPad 95% how to think about everything in life undoubtedly one of the best content channels I have been blessed to come across. thank you for making this video!
As a medical student, you totally opened up my mind and revolutionized the way I study. You have shifted my paradigm about studying that it isn't just a passive process, but an active one. Our brain works by answering question and our main job in learning is challenging it by asking questions and identifying problems. It isn't just plain memorizing and parroting. Thank you Samuel!
On being 76 yrs of age and curious and wanting to know about subjects that I love such as organic gardening and love for nature, Samuel ‘s video has ignited a new fire within me to remember what I read and take notes was really inspirational, You are truly a great teacher , teaching about how to ask the right question s to arrive at the right answers and to study well is so important so as to get the optimum output from your iPad ,which I have found to be a very powerful tool in learning and widening your horizons . Truly a great video and a learning experience.
You definitely made me want to take notes on an iPad I don't even have, for a class, I'm not enrolled in. Great job on explaining and your creativity to breaking things down.
As I was watching this I began thinking how I could apply this to post college life. I have a lot of things I like to research and learn and often I have a combo of notes and media about these things . From this video and others I plan to try and start creating digital notes with images , video links etc that condense all the information that works for me. I’m adhd and lazy so I’ll likely just keep watching videos lol but, the idea is I think the concept is applicable even if your not in classes.
I absolutely love how he admits there were things he didn't know, and there were things that overwhelmed him. That's what makes good students and good teachers.
I must say, the point you made "all you need is the right questions" is absolute gold dust. It's the only way to truly prepare and to engage with whatever scenario you're walking into, education, work, even just a chat with a friend or stranger. I really enjoyed the way you presented your content and the energy with which you did. Solid work man - huge congrats and thank you for sharing content like this!
This video is not only useful to students. As a software engineer, this is also what I do in a professional setting. No matter how complex any project might seem at first, once I started writing down all the questions that came to my mind, all these smaller problems would become much more manageable. You just have to divide and conquer. It was a nice surprise that this video is more about how you use the tool, instead of the tool itself. 🙂
The qualified often think, they aren't because they know what they don't know, they know how much they don't know. That, and only that, makes a human wise. -Me lol

ok. aside from teaching us how to be organized and learn, you actually taught us about the body and delivered a lesson better than half my teachers could ever. wow
Am I ever happy I discovered you this morning. I am a 67 year old lifelong learner, and your note taking tips will certainly help me organize my research and writing. Thank you Samuel.
This is the first time ever I've not felt jealous or disappointed in myself when watching a video about medical study notes. Seeing your process rather than this 'immaculate final product' on its own really helps this video feel like you're trying to help others engage with their learning rather than just effectively 'showing off' with how good your notes are. Thanks for this :)
It's pretty crazy how someone can have the ability to show in that extremely beautiful kind of way, underlined with music, how beautiful it is to gain knowledge. Thank you for that big inspiration, Samuel!
kahfi bonboy Yes because studying hard means a student would make studying more difficult by using the ways of how they should be studying than studying smart. Studying smart is more on finding smart ways, and methods to effectively, and time efficiently study.
I always known myself for asking allot of questions during lecture. I’m the one student who asks the dumb questions and doesn’t feel ashamed. I’m there to learn. I am aware that that’s the way that I learn! But you just made me understand that I have been doing it correctly all along, however, to organize my questions like you do and start notes with them... genius. You just opened new doors for me man! Amazing! Thank you so much. Best video in studying!
Couldn’t agree more with the value of copying and drawing diagrams and notes yourself. As an electrical engineering student in a time… let’s just say before iPads, I found this to be an invaluable method. You’ve taken that to a fantastic new level that I’m eager to apply to my current endeavors. Love to see your mind at work!
This guy not only gave us a method for note-taking, but he also basically summarized how to study, learn, and even solve problems in our daily life that have nothing to do with school, and he did so in a smooth, organized, and coherent way. I really like this video and everything about it, from the film shots, to the explanation, to the editing, to the presentation. It's obvious he puts effort and thought into what he's doing and throughout the whole video I was just sitting there nodding my head. Great content, well done. ❤
people need to remember that taking pretty aesthetic colourful notes is not actually studying, i could read 5 lectures plus additional sources like textbooks within the time it takes me to make colourful notes for 1 lecture, this is just not feasible during medical school where you are bombarded with 5-6 lectures per day.
I’m definitely going to return to this video going into college in a couple months. I’ve done well in high school by just “coasting” by, but I want to go into college with a fresh mindset with my note taking and study habits. This video, better than most others, has helped me understand how I can best succeed with new note taking habits and ideas. It also makes me even more excited to utilize my new iPad Pro in lecture. Have you experimented with typing notes/questions you may have with a keyboard set up? If so, how does that relate to your overall process?
definitely a good idea, i did the same in high school and used the same method in college and it really screwed me up. I followed up on the video and can proudly say I am a much better student :DD
You sound like somebody that actually tried to learn because of genuine interest in your education. I wish I had friends in my class that actually wanted to learn and not just pass next exam when I did my bachelor's in software engineering... 😔
Oh i can definitely relate… my classmates are literally the same, they’re willing to put on minimal effort enough just to pass the class and not fail.. i actually love my major (data science) but have no friends that feel the same…
in the app just jot down what you want to then there is a function which changes your handwriting to better handwriting or block letter or typed stuff your choice
Breaking down the material into questions is actually something called active recall!! So the way he's taking notes is super efficient in remembering and learning. His one-liner is the all encompassing rule at the core of learning: "All the answers you need are out there, you just need the right questions to access them." Great video my dude!!
You have a huge potential for being a motivational speaker, because you actually motivated my to do my analytical essay in English which is a very hard accomplishment just so you know ;)
This was so helpful! I’ve been trying to get back into the “school” mindset to motivate me to get back to school but i’ve been so overwhelmed with the idea of school in general. This was so nice to watch!
same here! and it was really helpful to hear him emphasise individual learning styles over just one method. cause while it's important for us viewers to remember that ourselves, sometimes we just forget in the need to find ways to make school life easier. I got less info in this video than I did other study videos, but I got the most impactful lesson anyway.
@@AT-ws9lx yes same here too! I’ve always struggled because I’ve never known how to revise, everyone has always said flash cards but that method has never worked for me. This video was literally THE most helpful thing I’ve ever come across.
this is so much better than my method of writing everything down and not knowing what any of it means then daydreaming about something totally different for the rest of class
I am crying! Thank you so much for this video. I am 38 struggled with school all my life and have do work extra hard to get good grades. I have ADHD. I have always struggled with comprehension I feel like this will be a game changer for me! Asking questions then doing research on it is brilliant! I have been dreading this upcoming semester because I have anatomy. My goal was to watch some note taking tips this surpassed my expectations thank you! I tend to make lengthy notes but I’m sure when asking questions you probably end up with a greater understanding that the notes can be summarized easily. Thanks again!!
I have the same issue. I was in grad school but withdrew because of my grades. I studied for hours and hours but wasn’t retaining anything. Im 42, way out from having attended school. This video is very helpful.
I love how you don’t fuss over having ‘aesthetic’ or ‘cute’ penmanship in your study notes like other Study bloggers 👏 Very practical and succinct tips!
You’re a gifted speaker/teacher. Thank you for this. Is was so soothing (lol yes) and relaxing! I don’t even need to learn how to take notes, I was doing research on iPad pros 😂
I definitely agree, do you think you could make a course on how to take notes 📝 or what’s your process of how to break things down with your approach with different example from your experience?
@@kmhak idk my brother bought it for me. I think unless you are an artist you shouldn’t care too much about it. I only using it for notes taking if it works than it works.
@@some1503 I am someone who draws on the iPad (I am not an artist, my art is not great) but I won’t say it’s great. The only effect is the noise which is okay but raindrops and lofi is better.
Notability is a life saver. Having all my notes in one place and not losing them was well worth the 9.99. I use notability for annotating slides while simultaneously wringing note is the side by side note taking options. And notes on black paper has definitely been more effective for studying for myself.
Hey Samuel! I never leave comments on videos but I found yours quite inspiring. I’m a teacher and I follow many teachers on RUclips but somehow what you’ve shared of your learning experience resonated in me. Thank you so much! You’ll do amazing I’m sure :)

You should definitely try out the Histogram app complete with diagrams, slides, videos and notes. It's there for android but I dunno whether there's an iOS version.
This was incredibly helpful! For years and years I've struggled to scribble notes as fast as I could trying to keep up with slides and then look over them later and try to figure out what they were trying to say and feel like a idiot when I couldn't understand. I hadn't ever considered making my questions such a high priority. Thank you so very much for taking the time to do this. Subbed.
One of the most insightful videos I’ve ever watched on RUclips, it starts out as a concern that is so relatable and you end up having the applicable solution by the end. The best 18 minutes ever! THANK YOU!!!!
Rudyard Kipling said this: “Six honest serving men taught me all what I knew; their names are What and Why and When and How and Where and Who”. It is quite similar to your process. It stars with curiosity. Inside. Thank you very much. Great content. Your notes are not only practical but beautiful.
I’ve been feeling like I just wasn’t smart enough to keep going with my medical degree but your approach is amazing I’m going to give it a go next semester. So thank you
I wanted to cry at the end of this video, I finally found the answers I needed in order to master graduate school (of course I have to implement my own spicy lol) but this honestly gave me the guidance I needed. Switching to digital notes TODAY! Thank you and God bless
Wow! Just wow! I am a teacher and as my students are switching to digital devices over the last year, i begin to notice that many of them are struggling with their note taking... they would sometimes just write everything down as fast as they could, or don´t write down anything at all, maybe take a picture of a friends screen after the lesson. So before teaching them about the subject, i now absolutely will adress the methods that could be helpful for them. But what really hits me about your video is not the advice on how to take proper notes, but it is your approuch to learning (non-digital or digital). You are just so motivational, positive and authentic! I loved watching this video!!
Taking notes like this the question “why?” Is so important. Ask why until you can answer your “why” questions with concise information. And if you cannot answer the question that means you do not fully know the content well enough and you have to review and study until you can. This is how I test myself , just simply asking myself “why?” about the given topic I’m learning.
Wow, I have just started my PhD and I started to be lost about how I should go about taking notes across all different subjects I have to learn - while at the same time not really being enrolled in classes anymore. In my Bachelors and some work experience of writing manuals, I excelled at breaking things down and even sometimes working with a quesiton-approach. Thank you so much for reminding me of this and even explaining how to actually apply it in a flexible and personal way. This is the BEST video I have been watching on note taking/processing new information and learning. One of my biggest struggles is that I always approached my notes as "having to be perfect" from the start. But it makes totally sense - knowledge and learning evolves and hence we need multiple versions! So happy I found you :)
here i am thinking that you full drew that heart, but it just a screen shot. work smarter not harder. my notes are never gonna look as beautiful as yours, and im ok with that, but your method of writing down question, during your lectures and then finding the answer to those question after, has helped me so much. you are a god send
I started nursing school four weeks ago, and I've been struggling really bad. Thank you, this helped me so much, not only with how to take notes, but as a motivation to keep going. So thank you, I really needed this.
Hey Samuel, just want to let you know that the process of asking myself these questions helped me a lot! I didn't realize it to take such a approach but I'm doing it, since I watched your last video. Since that I can understand so many things much clearer and faster than I thought. Just working with Goodnootes 5 and Notability just like you. The only downside is, is that my handwriting is awful haha Greetings from Germany :)
@@AYITE1210 i feel you. I really try to become better at it, but when i am inside a lecture, i just scribble it down and sometimes at the end i cant decipher what my notes mean anymore :D So revising after the lecture is the way, also improving your handwriting is the way to go, but it takes a lot of time. We can be honest, that sometimes we dont have time, or do not think it is necessary. I wish you and me good luck for becoming better at handwriting! Thank you Samuel for those insanely high quality videos!
Geht mir genauso :) Additionally, I started using the Cornell format to study for exams, but I don't use it as intended. It's basically two columns with extra space at the top and the bottom. I use Samuels method of taking notes first. Then I take my summary and notes on the topic, read through it and think of possible exam questions, write it in the left column. Then I try to answer them on the right column. If I can't do it from the top of my head, I look at my notes. If I still can't answer a question I know I have to revisit that and note it on the bottom of the page. This way I get a good overview and I work with the notes instead of just reading them again. The brain memories things better this way.
I have the same problems, my writing is awful. It's not just because I had to write with stylus on glass, my writing on paper also bad. But with good notes there's a cheat for that, you can write like usual than use the lasso tools to block your writing there'll be an option to convert your handwriting into text so it's gonna be beautiful no matter how awful your writing originally are.
My friend, thank you very much. I don't really know how to thank you. I don't want to be a drama. But this video made me want to cry. It opened my mind to points that I hadn't seen before. I watched this video a lot and I think I will continue watching.
jennifer bikopoulos no, you're definitely not alone...I watch his videos whenever school makes me feel like giving up. My Doctorate of Physical Therapy should be sponsored by Samuel haha
Finally , I found someone who has been able to put words to something I have discovered over the years in medical school . I am so glad I found this video . I absolutely love this video and I am so glad about it . ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
This is literally amazing, not only does it help you absorb more from a lecture, but it also is a great tool for studying. You're writing down the things you don't understand while absorbing the stuff you do better. Then going home and looking everything up to ensure you have a better understanding! This may just be the best trick to studying yet.
I tutor my friends’ kids/help them with homework. They’re at the late primary school level, so they’re not attending lectures and taking notes. One of the “tricks” I’ve taught them is to go to the questions first before reading the material. I think this better engages them with the reading material-it turns reading into a hunt for answers.
He's so inspiring ngl! This video didn't focus nor even seemed like he was trying to promote iPad Pro, he was just being the compassionate most inspiring person every student needed. Hats off! :))
am I a joke to you? yes! we are. some programs were asked to use require a laptop (LockDown browser etc) bc they claim it’s not reliable on the iPad but other than that I’ve used it for everything so far! I find it crazy you would be told you’re not allowed..... it’s been the best investment i’ve made into my education aside from my tuition lol

"All the information is out there and available, all you need is the right questions to access them" "you know what you don't know and that's the most important thing" just some of my favourite quotes from this video
Hey Samuel, I happened to stumble upon your video. I've been thinking of switching to paperless notes ever since I gained interest in learning how to do digital art. My senior year of high school in the midst of online schooling was a wreck, for lack of a better term. I barely passed by the skin of my teeth, even with the encouragement and help of my teachers who went above and beyond for me. It was so bad I took an academic gap year to recover from it all. I look at my upcoming first year of college with a healthy dose of fear. While I can't say it's completely gone after watching this video, I can say it's taken the edge off of it. Thank you very much for posting this.

this is exactly what i inuitively used to do in undergrad and in med school, i just never had anyone else explain the process! except i skipped the question part and ipads weren't really that big of a thing back then so i did everything by hand but would love making charts and tree diagrams to reorganize the lecture content into a way that "fit" in my head. very cool!!!
I am in college of Medicine, second Semester and I have been using papers to take notes and after seeing this video I am willing to change it to an iPad or a Galaxy Tab S8 series, because we have so many lectures each week and I don't have that much time to review all of them on paper since I have to search for them one by one. Thank you so much ❤️

Haha exactly, i am going to have one soon.
Brilliant!
Well said!

This guy is a mad scientist when it comes to studying and learning. Not to mention that his video editing skills are top level.
Same for me , Linux administrator

Study smart is a part of study hard😛
kahfi bonboy I mean, work smarter, not harder.

Me asking myself: "do I even write the notes? No I don't."
"Breaking things down, and building things up.." sounded like a poetry!
Breaking down the material into questions is actually something called active recall!! So the way he's taking notes is super efficient in remembering and learning. His one-liner is the all encompassing rule at the core of learning: "All the answers you need are out there, you just need the right questions to access them." Great video my dude!!
You have a huge potential for being a motivational speaker, because you actually motivated my to do my analytical essay in English which is a very hard accomplishment just so you know ;)

same here! and it was really helpful to hear him emphasise individual learning styles over just one method. cause while it's important for us viewers to remember that ourselves, sometimes we just forget in the need to find ways to make school life easier.
I loved watching this video!!
don’t take this video for granted. appreciate his advice by “breaking [it] down and building [it] up” through practice.
"I let my curiosity take over" this sentence was so important for me. thanks for the great video

We can be honest, that sometimes we dont have time, or do not think it is necessary.
I wish you and me good luck for becoming better at handwriting!
Thank you Samuel for those insanely high quality videos!
Geht mir genauso :)
Additionally, I started using the Cornell format to study for exams, but I don't use it as intended.
