Bodycam: Illinois Woman Laughs, Plays Dumb After Killing Two People in Deadly DUI Crash

- Bodycam footage captures the callous behavior of an Illinois woman who laughed and played dumb after killing two people in a deadly DUI crash on April 10, 2022. Stephanie Melgoza, who blew three times over the legal limit, failed sobriety tests administered by East Peoria officers at the scene. Despite the tragic consequences of her actions, the clearly intoxicated Melgoza showed no remorse, even referencing the private university she was set to graduate from, saying "This doesn't happen. I go to Bradley."

The disturbing bodycam video shows officers growing increasingly frustrated with Melgoza's nonchalant attitude and seeming lack of grasp on the severity of the situation. At one point in the hospital, after learning the two victims had died, an officer lambasts her for continuing to joke around, calling her "pathetic." Ultimately, Melgoza pleaded guilty to two counts of aggravated DUI death and two counts of aggravated reckless driving. She was ultimately sentenced to 14 years in prison.

Well it wasn’t planned and it was under the influence so it’s not first or second degree, it’s like involuntary manslaughter which is around a 15 year sentence so acccording to legal standards it’s sufficient. But based off her demeanor in this video I believe she should go to jail forever.

I was hit by a drunk driver while I was crossing (walking) at a green light. This was in 1984, I’ve had 19 surgeries, and have been in a wheelchair ever since.. I have NO pity for her, whatsoever.

What's even more sad is we have a house that has a party twice a month and we try to stop the drunk drivers from getting in their car. We watch them bring open alcohol bottles in their car and the police didnt do a thing. The one time the police came to a car who had an open bottle arrested the passenger because they lied about their name and the driver was made to give them the open liquor bottle... then let them leave.

I am an ER nurse. We often cared for the drunk perpetrator of murder while resuscitating the victim on the next room. This woman is truly pathetic.
Being that you are an ER nurse, I'm surprised you don't have more compassion, considering she may be not only drunk, but medicated on God knows what, or may actually suffer from some form of mental illness. I'm not saying what she did isn't wrong, or should be excusable, and my heart breaks for the families of the ones who lost their lives, but everyone involved in this deserves at least some compassion.

She drinks pretty heavily if she blew a .02 and can still talk someone coherently. Maybe it's adrenaline? I used to drink a lot before quitting, and would be perfectly fine at that BAC.... But that's not a good thing.

This cop managed the situation amazingly. She tried so hard to make him laugh off the situation but he was having none of it.

In 2007 a drunk driver hit me and my 2 oldest children at the time. My son was 19 months old and my daughter was almost 3. my children were severly disabled from the accident. My daughter passed away from a seizure in 2011. Fortunately my son is now 17 and is amazing. He is in a wheelchair and has to wear diapers but he is the definition of a miracle!! The driver died so he got out easy... Blows my mind the lack of remorse she has drunk or not...

You wouldn't sober up. You don't will away the alcohol from your blood stream. An otherwise normal but inebriated person would have reacted drunkenly of course, but appropriate for the situation, like showing extreme remorse, panic, fear, confusion, with fleeting moments of denial, since most drunken drivers don't expect their life to dramatically change for the worse in an instant.

Then, when he was doing the eye test, she was complaining about how hard it was and actually said "I'd rather do the walking test". All of this points to her entitled attitude, acting as if she actually had a choice is what procedures they did or didn't follow with her. @@chiefstain can’t speak for England but here in Scotland the police are unbelievably calm with drunk people, as long as you aren’t causing major issues they are very understanding. Even if you are causing issues they barely use force unless absolutely needed and 9/10 will diffuse situations calmly. Then again, I’m just generalising from my experience though!

I have epilepsy and had a seizure while driving on the parkway. Sadly the crash killed two people. It has changed my life forever and things will never be the same. At certain points it’s a day to day struggle. Then there are people like this that could care less. This girl is pathetic. She has no idea or concern about what happened to those people and their families. I want to see her reactions in court when sober.

Quick input from someone who is incredibly ashamed of having a DUI… but still managed to get their life back. This is inexcusable. The lack of remorse speaks volumes. It’s been over 5 years and I still shudder at what happened: and I didn’t injure anyone. I can’t imagine living with myself if I’d killed a literal person.

Yeah I’ve never driven drunk but I have driven after 1 or 2 shots or 1 cocktail and I know it’s not a lot but I’ve vowed to myself to never ever do it again. Because the charge wasn’t planned or attempted murder, it was reckless endangerment and aggravated DUI. She got a 14 year sentence, which by legal standards, is to be expected for a case like this. 28 years would be excessive and unreasonable considering the nature of the charges.

There is another video of a young guy in booking that completely broke down when they told him he hit and killed a person. He really thought he hit a trash bin. He was in total shock and asking if the person had a family and how old they were and what was their name. He was devastated by what he did and understood the severity of his actions. When she gets out, she has nothing to get out to - will be living in halfway houses with drug addicts and working a minimum wage job.
