If that hit doesn’t happen, not only do the Niners perhaps win that game to play for an unprecedented 3rd straight Super Bowl win, but Montana was the back-to-back NFL MVP, too, playing at an insanely high level. Even if the Giants still pull off the upset, if Montana isn’t hurt, NFL history in the ‘90s is VERY different. Steve Young - who would win league MVP in 1992 and 94, and lead the Niners to win the 94 Super Bowl and would win Super Bowl MVP - likely has to be traded. So Bill knows how close things can go toward everyone believing Montana was the best QB ever, to believing it is Brady. If Montana’s not hurt in that NFC Title game, he’s likely regarded as the best ever: if Brady’s lost ball against the Raiders is ruled a fumble, he’d certainly not have won that first Super Bowl, and he may never have been regarded as the best. I feel like when he reminisces about LT it brings him back to the time when he was a young coach who was hungry to learn and really just wanted to make an impact in the sport. We all have those warm memories when we were younger that just put a twinkle in our eyes and put a smile on it faces. That’s exactly what happens when he thinks about his time with LT.
LT was the once in a lifetime talent, and if you drafted him, the impact on your team was immediate and noticeable, elevating the play out of necessity, of everyone else on the team. He was not only more gifted athletically than virtually everyone playing that I saw, except perhaps a Bo Jackson, but his foot ball IQ and acumen were unparalleled, comparable to that of Mike Singeltary, another brilliant defensive football mind. When you get Bill Belichick to respond with more than a cursory yes, no, or another mono-syllabic retort to any question you know that subject holds a special place in his heart and memories. There have been other excellent defensive players, but really nobody that revolutionized a position, changed the way the game was actually played and caused every opposing offensive player and coordinator to lose sleep trying to think of ways to either slow down or survive the encounter with LT and his Giants.
LT also had one other thing going for him. Opposing offenses were scared of him. He was mean and he physically punished them. It's hard to win in a physical sport like football when you're scared of your opponent. There's a great youtube video of an interview with Erik Dickerson talking about his first game vs. Taylor in Dickerson's rookie season. I won't ruin it for you, but it's hilarious. Dickerson was genuinely scared.
He was solely responsible for the way that the left tackle became crucial. He made Anthony Munoz and other great tackles a lot of money. He made football better.
I do agree with you that Bo Jackson was another freak of nature like LT but Bo, unfortunately, did not last very long in the NFL after his hip-pointer injury
@@peteasarisi2536 or they saw a few plays and thought he was just a pass rushing specialist. And yes he was great at that... but also great at everything else he was asked to do from special teams to even a game at TE during replacement games. I don't recall him in man coverage but his instincts were so great for everything else I doubt he would fail at that. And for clarification I am not saying he was not used in man coverage I am just saying I never noticed it because the TV camera doesn't show the whole field.

Watt and whoever the frick, and nobody and I mean nobody, is in the same category as Lawrence Taylor pursuing the run, setting the edge, bull rushing tackles 70 lbs heavier than him and busting double and triple teams and playing in short or medium coverage. The only man I’d put better than him is Reggie white and that’s mostly from the interior, he would just throw 330 lb tackles to the side and could play both end and both tackle positions lining up anywhere across the line. It’s a good thing Taylor and White didn’t play on the same team because i honestly don’t think an offense would ever make to the red zone. It would probably take 7 or 8 guys to block those 2 and who could run or throw or catch against the other 9 defenders😂
@@GoldenSportsEnt, the crazy thing is, THIS, his demeanor is what George Young cited as the reason he wouldn’t hire Belichick as a head coach. Damn shame. Set the Giants organization back for nearly a generation.
@@GoldenSportsEnt he's a grouch because he tries not to give anything away (about what his team is going to do in future contests). When anyone asks him a question about football history, he'll go off on a long tangent. Do a search on the long snapper question, he gave a 10 minute answer. Bellichick will do that because answering questions about football history doesn't give up any clues about the next gameplan.
LT had physical gifts and he played so hard. Took advantage of them and was just a natural leader on the team. Rarely do gems like this come to your team and the Giants won big with him.
LT was explosive, passionate and had great instincts. Bobby Knight said Larry Bird had better court awareness than anyone else. Taylor had that on the football field.
And L.T. didn't even practice that hard, teammates claim that he used to fall asleep in team meetings that's how great he was but on Sundays he came to play, an average player would have been cut right there.
all one has to do is watch the clip of LT breaking Joe Theismann's leg. Clean hit, compound fractures of both tibia and fibia, career ender. LT got up, looked at Theismann, put his hands on his head, and frantically gestured for the Redskins' medical personnel to get out there.
Had the privilege of growing up in my teens years watching LT and those Giant defenses dominate the everyone. Such a great time and will never be like that again...sadly.
I remember those years. The Giants gained more yardage on defense due to the great LT. Also as a bonus you get a chance to watch LT dominate. I am not worthy to watch but I still watched.
It is truly amazing to see sullen Bill look like a kid in a candy store when he talks about lawrence!! Shame how far my beloved team has fallen!! All i know is he literally looked like he was being fast forwarded out on the field vs the competition. That thanksgiving ge he single handedly 1 against the lions was amazing
Did I really just hear him say that LB/DE Lawrence freaking Taylor was a gunner on the punt team?? I’ve been watching football for a long time. And I remember when Lawrence Taylor played. But I never knew that. That’s insane. I love the way he talks about players and subjects when people ask good questions.
On RUclips type in "Lawrence Taylor forced fumbles" (66 of them) it's broadcast footage. It's hysterical seeing him destroy people on punt coverage & he played special teams for way longer than I thought. There's the same vids up of him titled "goal line defense" "sacks" "pass defense" "run defense" & every single play is a masterpiece not even exaggerating bc I remember watching his entire career & forgot how much harder he hit & faster he played than everybody else bc NFL Films slow motion & production has way too much isolated slow motion & music is a distraction but the game broadcast isolated plays really show that he is by far the greatest player the NFL has ever seen & Madden & Summerall call almost every play. & I grew up absolutely hating the Giants so definitely not being a homer the footage is just that insane & he does it against a who's who of Canton

To those too young to have seen Lawrence Taylor play, watch his highlights on RUclips. After that, understand this, he was that violent and dominant every game, every snap that he took! Also, he didn't lift weights a whole lot.
Not that LT needed validation but this probably made him feel so appreciated for what he brought to the league. Best defensive player ever in my eyes. Especially coming from a coach who literally never praises players.
You gotta remember LT was drafted in 1981 and the QB sack didn't become an official statistic till 1982. Unfortunately there are a lot of great pass rushers who will never get the statistical recognition and credit they deserve from before 1982 because of that. With LT due to this reason it is believed there is probably somewhere between 15 and 20 sacks he doesn't get credit for.
"Love talking about Lawrence" coming from a guy that is very reserved at least publicly, that might be the biggest compliment out of everything he said there about LT
The single, most destructive force that the NFL has ever seen. From day one of his first training camp, LT set the bar that simply hasn't yet been matched.
LT was incredible. Just wondering what he would be like in today’s league. No tackles were really kick stepping back - they just kind of back pedaled. I mean this is all due to his technique coming off the edge in the 5 technique. The league completely had to re-write entire offenses in order to deal with him!
@@stephenkinq5425, you have to say, because of Lawrence Taylor, certain players like Ronnie Lott and Rickey Jackson were obscured by Taylor’s brilliance. As a rookie cornerback, Lott bagged 7 interceptions, 3 of them were pick-6s, and he was the best player on a 49er defense that won the Super Bowl and Taylor shut Lott out for DROTY and DPOTY. Rickey Jackson was the most dominant 3-4 LOLB in the NFL during the 1980s. He was better than Andre Tippett over the long-term and his career numbers prove this out. No LOLB who played on the strong side had Jackson’s numbers.
Today's players benefit from better coaching, better understanding of technique, better nutrition, better science, however, if LT were around today, he'd have the benefit of all those things too. So yes, he'd still kick everyone's ass. He had some abilities you can't teach.
Personal foul breathing on the quarter back, if Taylor was playing right now, how lucky this modern NFL players are that they are so protected with the rules of today.

Even if Mac Jones doesn't receive the award this year; I'm sure that Bill, Lawrence, and him have extremely bright futures ahead.

The NFL can be divided into pre-LT and post-LT eras. Before LT blitzing LB's were picked up by RB's, the 3-4 was considered a gimmick defense and LOT's and ROT's pretty much were interchangeable. Post LT however the schemes for picking up blitzing LB's became so complex that rookie RB's often have the ride the pine, the 3-4 to this day is the base defense of several top teams and LOT became a skill position worthy of huge contracts. LT = GOAT.
I can't remember the timeline on the 3-4. The undefeated Dolphins in 1972 ran the 3-4 on third downs I think. By the time Taylor was a rookie in 1981, the 3-4 had been a common defense. The difference was that Taylor was the first outside linebacker to rush on almost every passing play. Ray Lewis is on the same level as Taylor. He has double the number of career tackles as Taylor. Jack Lambert was pretty solid too. Lambert was beating Madden, while Madden was announcing Taylor. It's tough to see Taylor's name without hearing Madden's voice.
On goal line defense LT would line up 5 yards deep over the center. No matter where you wanted to run the ball in a goal line situation LT was going to be there. LT also played the wing on the extra point kick with HOFamer Harry Carson on the other side.
LT slept thru watching Tape during the week. Bill was pissed 😂 but Lawrence said to.Bill. Hey I always show up on Sunday. Plus I already know what you showed on tape
the way LT played the game. the unhinged ferocious speed combined with how strong he was as a human. it influenced the way everyone played the game in the late 90s and 2000s.
I used to watch all those Giant games with my Dad. Before LT if you had to go to the bathroom, you went when the Giant D was on the field. After LT, you went when the O was on the field. Also Madden & Summerall had the Giant games on CBS! Great days!

I was lucky enough to see four games on the 35 yd line of LT’s rookie year and it was absolutely crazy to watch three offensive players try to block him. So much fun to see a total reckless abandon player unleashed on unsuspecting professional football teams!

He physically punished the opposition. There are interviews on youtube with Hall of Famers who talk about how they were scared of him. We all have those warm memories when we were younger that just put a twinkle in our eyes and put a smile on it faces. That’s exactly what happens when he thinks about his time with LT.
‘I love talking about Lawrence.’ Loved that part.
Best Player who ever lived.
I do agree with you that Bo Jackson was another freak of nature like LT but Bo, unfortunately, did not
last very long in the NFL after his hip-pointer injury
Amen
You can see how explosively excited Belichick is. Can’t contain himself.
LT was the best overall football player of all time regardless of position.
Facts. Him and Jim Brown.
@Chris Smith are you for real? he changed the way the game is played PERIOD you are a complete moron
Easily the greatest most dominant player in NFL history & anybody who says different never watched a single play of his on game day.
@@peteasarisi2536 or they saw a few plays and thought he was just a pass rushing specialist. And yes he was great at that... but also great at everything else he was asked to do from special teams to even a game at TE during replacement games. His zone coverage skills were superb too, QBs who targeted his zone were at risk for a pick 6. I don't recall him in man coverage but his instincts were so great for everything else I doubt he would fail at that. And for clarification I am not saying he was not used in man coverage I am just saying I never noticed it because the TV camera doesn't show the whole field.
@Chris Smith r u crazy?
you dont know what you are talking about buddy..smoke some better drugs beore you say something dumb.
LT came in as a rookie as the best defensive player in the NFL. Nobody has done that before and since.
Aaron Donald
@@okokokokokokokokkookAaron Donald isn’t even close to Taylor 🤣 you must be under 30 years old. I’ve watched everyone from Joe Greene and Alan page to Reggie white and Bruce smith up till today’s players, j.j. Watt, Ray Lewis, Aaron Donald, nick Bosa, t.j.
This is Belichick's version of being giddy and its always when he talks about Lawrence Taylor and its for good reason. LT was the man.
LT must have been even better than we think. We only got to see him dominate once a week. He saw it every day in practice too.
Awesome line
Glad I got to watch LT play. He was an amazing player!
I wish I never saw him play, he destroyed my Redskins.. all joking aside, he was the best player I have ever seen play at any position.
Respect brother. I was born in 78. I saw as a kid but you really saw it. You know I really respect my elders. 👍
They need to ask bill more questions like this. Means alot hearing that from him
They honestly have to catch him in a good mood 😂
@@GoldenSportsEnt dude is never in a good mood lol
Was that before he left Indiana?😂
@@rahlohmcdonogh4855 Knight said that about Bird while Bird was at Indiana state.
Greatest football player that ever lived regardless of position
Albert Jimenez I say the same thing 💯with out a doubt. Never seen anyone like him.
When you try to explain just hoe great he was kids today just don't understand
I totally agree
1.Lawrence Taylor
2. Barry Sanders
3. Ed. Reed
4. Randy Moss
5. Deion Sanders
Coached the 2 best football players of all time, regardless of position.
And L.T. didn't even practice that hard, teammates claim that he used to fall asleep in team meetings that's how great he was but on Sundays he came to play, an average player would have been cut right there.
I was a Cowboy fan back in those days . I actually felt fear for the Cowboys when they played the Giants with LT . He was a Super man among man .
all one has to do is watch the clip of LT breaking Joe Theismann's leg.
Don’t know what you have until it’s gone. And it is sad not to have those days again.
I remember those years. The Giants gained more yardage on defense due to the great LT. Also as a bonus you get a chance to watch LT dominate. I am not worthy to watch but I still watched.
Lawrence Taylor…A man so great he made Bill Belichick smile and talk for more than a few sentences!
I hated LT as I am a 9er fan but Bill is right I have never seen a defensive player come close to his greatness :(
Love the last bit, "could of played everywhere but corner...😕 eh...probably could of played corner too." Ha!

You are a true fan….😏👍
Your name is killing me lmao!!!
Belichick is giving LT his flowers to the max.
Best head coach in football & best of the best ever in game time mgmt., I m a Steeler fan btw for 55 yrs.
Thank you, truth is truth though, I do not gamble, but I do tell folks to never bet against the Patriots and head coach Bill , I don't care what their season win/loss record is when you play them & if they get ahead early in a game by say anywhere from 14 to 17 points, your team will hardly ever get the ball back on offense, Coach Bill will start running down the play clock before every snap on every play when they have the ball on offense
He learned it from Bill Parcells, who learned it from picking Tom Landry’s brain
BILL SAID I JUST LOVE TALKING ABOUT LAWRENCE TAYLOR, I USED TO WORK AT GIANT'S STADIUM & I USED TO SEE LAWRENCE AT PRACTICE & IN LIVE NFL GAMES & I USED TO WATCH HIM & BELIEVE ME THIS GUY WAS SUPERMAN, BILL BELICHEK WAS HIS DEFENSIVE CORDINATOR LT WAS THE MAN PERIOD.
“Even though he didn’t really know what he was doing”. Yet he’s arguably the greatest defensive player, if not player, of all time. That says a lot
Pretty sure that only applied to his first few games in the pros.
To those too young to have seen Lawrence Taylor play, watch his highlights on RUclips. After that, understand this, he was that violent and dominant every game, every snap that he took!
Also, he didn't lift weights a whole lot.
and dont forget, he did like to party, just a little :D
... And this coming from Bill Belichick, one of the most highly-respected NFL coaches of all time...what a helluva compliment for L.T.!!!
I cannot be the only person who loves falling asleep to Bill Belichick talking
Best football player ever........period
Tell my son's the same thing. Not only the greatest defensive player ever...The Greatest Football Player EVER !!!
As a giants fan since I was five the year we beat the Broncos, I love Belichick and LT is the GOAT.
He'd still dominate. He converted speed to power before that was even a term and he did better than anyone who ever played.
Its L.T , Reggie white nd Derrick Tomas
[ in that order ]
.. When I think of most dominate Defensive players ever.
"He could have played any position on defense except corner,,,,,he could have played corner too"..... Best defensive player of all time, maybe the greatest football player ever,,,only 3 guys in my view for the GOAT argument, LT, Jerry Rice, Tom Brady
59 year old Detroit Lions fan here… LT, was and still stands as the greatest defensive player bar far that ever lived!!!
Bill Belickick and LT are both great men. This is an interesting video because even though this video is about three days old Bill's current quarterback is the front runner for rookie of the year. Even if Mac Jones doesn't receive the award this year; I'm sure that Bill, Lawrence, and him have extremely bright futures ahead.
I appreciate any likes which were thrown my way; today is Christmas and hopefully we will all be giants soon.
LT was a great football player but he is NOT a great man. You should learn the difference.

"Let's go out there like a bunch of crazed dogs", even his quotes were great
love these press conferences
On goal line defense LT would line up 5 yards deep over the center. No matter where you wanted to run the ball in a goal line situation LT was going to be there. LT also played the wing on the extra point kick with HOFamer Harry Carson on the other side.
The very top of the list
Arguably, LT is One of the Six Greatest NFL players to have played the Game
Maybe top 8
Lawrence Taylor is without a doubt the best football player ever that dude is incredible I’ve never seen a better player that dude was beyond dominant

Don’t give a damn what anyone says, I love Coach Belichick!!! #Giants
Agree too bad the giants didn’t make him head coach
the way LT played the game. the unhinged ferocious speed combined with how strong he was as a human. it influenced the way everyone played the game in the late 90s and 2000s.
I used to watch all those Giant games with my Dad. Before LT if you had to go to the bathroom, you went when the Giant D was on the field. After LT, you went when the O was on the field. Also Madden & Summerall had the Giant games on CBS!
Great days!
I was the one who told LT in April of 86 that he would be the league’s mvp I asked him to sign it on a ball and s poster. he said he couldn’t I said don’t worry you are going to be the mvp that was April LT if you follow this I will tell you where it was. By the way you are the man
Holy shit, Bill LOVES football. I watched his reporters response to “long snappers history” and his reply was amazingly detailed. They don’t pay Bill enough money 👍🏻
I have heard Bill talk about the NFL before. He is a walking NFL encyclopedia.
I wish my own father loved me as much as Bill Belichick loves Lawrence Taylor
As a Redskin fan I'll never forget Taylor as an intimidating monster. He was a key player on the 1986 Giants SB team which I believe had one of the best defenses in NFL history.
They really did. The 85' Bears D was so good that the 86's Giants D is often overlooked but they were dominant.
@@johnd6751 I agree. I recall the Redskins were beating the Bears 10 - 0 in 85' and lost the game 45 - 10. They were monsters of the midway as they used to say but no division dominated like the eastern division in those days. Btw LT broke Theismann leg in 85' at RFK. Amazingly Jay Schroeder replaced him that night and actually pulled off the win. I really miss those days.
i remember the night well. I was at a Bruce Springsteen concert, ironically at Giants Stadium. Didn't realize the conflict at the time. As soon as I left the show I met some friends at a sports bar. I walked in just they were showing the Theismann replays. Only time I remember LT motioning over for medical help and showing compassion.@@jameswilson313
Imagine being on the return team then turn around to see LT barreling toward you at feel speed and hes your block resposibility
I was lucky enough to see four games on the 35 yd line of LT’s rookie year and it was absolutely crazy to watch three offensive players try to block him. LT would use the last one to batter that last blocker into the QB, really pick him up by his shoulder pads and launch him into Joe Theisman! So much fun to see a total reckless abandon player unleashed on unsuspecting professional football teams!
He had 7 sacks his rookie year ... yawn Micah had 13 .... in an era where the QB is protected ... new age better then old all day long .. evolution at its finest
@@Ciauskhaleesi back then it wasn't a passing league like it is today. They didn't have the 5 yard bump rule on pass coverage. Back then it was all smashmouth football. You can't compare stats from then to now, it doesn't mean anything. LT was unique - other teams didn't just double or triple team him. Other teams were scared of him. He physically punished the opposition. There are interviews on youtube with Hall of Famers who talk about how they were scared of him. Micah is a tremendous talent, maybe a generational talent, but he doesn't command that level of fear in his opponents. No one else in the history of the NFL has.

Can you imagine seeing LT at rookie camp and after a few plays you say to yourself who the fuck is this? The beginning of the legend.
John Madden said he never saw one person win a game before until he saw LT beat Detroit by himself.
When I watched LT high lites, it was like the footage was slowed down for all the players around him. He was in a different place. Imagine if LT actually worked out with weights etc. What you saw was all natural. Never be another.

That writer’s parents probably hadn’t met when LT was a rookie.

Fox sports analyst Brian Cox said that Bill Parcells and Bill Belichick only allowed LT to sleep during team meetings nobody else but him that shows how much he means to both of those legendary coaches.
That’s incredible 😂
I remember hearing something similar from Belichick (I think in the NFL 100 series, I’m not 100% certain) that Parcells told him he shouldn’t have started a meeting even though LT was running late
That's the most I've ever heard Belichick talk in a Presser.
“He was the gunner on the punt team. It was impossible to block”
The way he said that so nonchalant, it’s frightening…it also happens to be true
I love how Bill will talk about nothing passionately ... except Lawrence Taylor ... and he (LT) IS the greatest to ever put on pads, along with Brady, but Jaysus, Bill will whip it out and give you 5 min on LT, yet refuses to speak on strategic flaws in a playoff loss. What a legend (seriously). He's lost his fastball, but he is the GOAT for coaches. Hope things end somewhat well in Foxboro.
LT is the GOAT
“Instinctively as a football player, he (LT) is at the very top of the list.”

To think Belichick coached probably the best Defensive player ever in LT and the best offensive player in TB
He won the coaching lottery. Those Giant teams had great players all over over, that LB group was the best ever assembled. Better than the 70's Steelers of Hamm/Lambert.
Carson, Peppers, Reasons, Taylor. I think they are all HOFer.
the way my dad talks about Lawrence Taylor is like the exact same way Bill Belichick talks about Lawrence Taylor
1981 draft......... Everyone thought the Saints were going to take Lawrence Taylor at #1.
The NY Giants were set on drafting Freeman McNeil 2nd overall, because no team in their right mind would pass on LT.
Well........ The Saints were not in their right mind apparently. They drafted George Rogers, and the NY Giants got the best defensive player in history.
A player that changed the entire NFL, and struck fear into not only opposing players, but coaching staffs as well.
If I were Belichick, I'd be a little giddy talking about him as well. Taylor basically launched his career .
