That off season Jones wasn't the only one who got paid. Dexter Lawrence got paid and 24 hrs after Barkley signed the franchise tag the Giants gave a 107 million dollar contract to Andrew Thomas. Seems like there was plenty of money for these other positions. This was never about the Giants ability to pay Barkley it was about the Giants willingness to pay Barkley.

The NFL, as an enterprise, should make changes to the way they compensate players. They have statistics on running backs and all of the positions. Apparently, running backs perform better in their first years and then gradually decline, but the rookie contracts are structured so the value of players goes up with experience. Rookie RBs should be allowed to negotiate deals higher than the rookie contract, knowing that they will not be offered more money later in their careers.
I respect your insight, might I suggest something different though? Brett Kollman made a video that changed my mind on that exact same idea. He pointed out that being more pricy would actually inspire teams to pay them less overall and draft them lower. He proposed instead to make adjustments to how bonuses are paid to RBs in a way that allows greater cap flexibility which was super clever imo. May want to check it out!

The NFL, as an enterprise, should make changes to the way they compensate players. They have statistics on running backs and all of the positions. Apparently, running backs perform better in their first years and then gradually decline, but the rookie contracts are structured so the value of players goes up with experience. Rookie RBs should be allowed to negotiate deals higher than the rookie contract, knowing that they will not be offered more money later in their careers.
me thinks this would cause rookies RBs to get drafted later in the draft.
I respect your insight, might I suggest something different though? Brett Kollman made a video that changed my mind on that exact same idea. He pointed out that being more pricy would actually inspire teams to pay them less overall and draft them lower.
He proposed instead to make adjustments to how bonuses are paid to RBs in a way that allows greater cap flexibility which was super clever imo. May want to check it out!
