A few thoughts from 35 years of working with Hasselblad. I have been using the Hasselblad system my entire professional career, from film to digital. I live in the H system landscape and that is by far the best camera I have ever owned and use. It is my most favourite camera in the world with the most beautiful images. With the changes at Hasselblad and the failure to support the H system I was left with little option but to go to the X2D. There are a lot of annoyances with it. It is VERY slow. The blackout between shots makes it almost impossible to use in a commercial setting. It is extremely temperamental to tether and the door for the USB C is not removable so you are constantly juggling with it as well as it continuously asking for you to choose if you are tethering or not. The biggest challenge I have with this camera is it is quite fragile. I had a fall from a sitting height of 2 feet off the ground and the camera landed on the lens shade. That impact cause the entire frame to rack and have to go back to Sweden for 3 months for repair at a significant cost. This would have not even chipped the lens cover for a H system camera. As a long term, high end used of Hasselblad I am extremely disappointed with this camera and the support from Hasselblad. Disappointed to the extent that I am currently considering a complete brand switch. Just wanted to share some other experiences. I love my Hasselblad's and adore the images from them but I am saddened by this latest offering. Thank you for your great videos and insights, you are much appreciated.
Thank you. Yes another popular Hasselblad shooter recently started using Leica too as the H6 is no longer supposed. It’s sad for Hassy. Such a great brand in the past.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Know that person quite well and yes it is indeed a sad direction the company is going.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Saw Peter Coulson change to the Leica. I’m still enjoying my Leica S2 with the CCD and shoot in BW mode. I’d definitely upgrade to the S 007. Hope Leica releases an S4 and better lenses
@@Zetaphotography yes collab videos to come 👍🏻
The fact you fell from a 2 feet height tells me all I need to know about you. The problem is not the camera at all. Just be less clumsy. As adults, we shouldn’t have to factor in potential falls when we spend thousands on items like this. No offense and no disrespect but this is a great camera. The problem you’re having is in the mirror.
I love the colors of the Hassy, but also 16bits raws, new IBIS, internal storage, Leaf Shooter, the Menu system, and Phocus Software... Best camera I have ever used ♥
Thanks Rafael! I enjoyed testing it
Leaf shooter??
@@BrunoChalifour leaf shutter
Phocus software? What can u love in it?
The Hasselblad viewfinder is actual 1.0x magnification. It’s truly impressive.
Thanks Andrew. A very nice finder for sure.
I have a M10, love it, something special about the experience of using it. I just purchased a X1D 1 + 45mm f3.5. In comparison the experience of shooting either is totally different. I immediately had to learn how to deal with the X1D's practical shortcomings. No doubt it will be a big learning curve for any photographer. £2640 used. I think well worth the experience, what a camera, amazing images, dynamic range wow, 4x3 is my preferred aspect ratio (Olympus). I Loved your video because of Leica / Hasselblad (X2D in my dreams) X1D dreams come true.
Thanks Alan and congrats! With the prices of the X1D coming down that might be one option for me to explore in the future.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom X1D mk1 still a fantastic sensor according to a lot of accounts. We shall see.
I’ll stay with my V Series Hasselblad’s. I do use my Hasselblad lenses on a GFX 50SII and am more than happy with the results for the type of photography I do. Wouldn’t mind having a Leica film camera but then at 71 yrs old I’m more than happy with the two systems I have now. As for the “fanboys” out there all cameras are just a tool and not every tool is the right one for the job you are doing. Also there is no such thing as the perfect camera. Just ones that suit you better.
Thanks Sophie! I love my Hassy 500 series bodies. I still prefer film to digital.
The Phase One photographer. As well jumps in to say. I am sticking with Phase One. For these reasons....
Matt, a quick thanks for your great videos which are always entertaining, informative and helpful.
Thanks so much! They're far from perfect but I try to get the info across.
In the process of selling all my GFX kit (2 bodies and 7 lenses) to buy the X2D.
Nice Calvin! They are beautiful for sure!
Damns! Is it because you shoot with strobes?
I did this and have no regrets. I was only worried at first about the lens cost vs my gfx 100s gear but it worked out well with the inclusion of my HC 28mm and HC50-110 to get my focal lengths back and retaining incredible image quality.
My daily use for almost anything is the Nikon Z 8 coupled with the great S lenses built for that new mount. But my X2D is another world. Incredible rendering with Hasselblad Natural Colour Solution. The whole experience of theX2D is a delight. Superb ergonomics. The Z8, as most mirrorless cameras, has lots of fully customisable buttons, super AF that can spot planes even, but the X2D brings photography beautifully back to basics. Absolutely love it.
Yes! The X2D is the closest I've shot to a Leica. Both are a joy to use and the reason I pick up these over my Lumix (for example)
Hello Matt, I have not got a Lieca camera but have looked at them, bit I do have a Hasselblad X2D I now it is slow then most but the result are just outstanding and it dose feel so good in the hand. Keep well, Keep safe and enjoy life.
Hi thanks John! Yes if you want nice images and enjoy a slower speed it’s very good for sure.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom So compared to your 5x4 it’s warp speed!!!
Matt, it is the great attempt to bridge the gap between two different systems. I personally think, no matter of what you have or borrow is to compare the Hasselblad X with LEICA S, instead SL.
The LEICA S and the Hasselblad X are the Medium Size cousin Format more suitable for comparison.
Thanks.
Thanks, I used the S2 a few times before starting YT. I’ll try to get one to make a video sometime.
Hasselblad has always been a dream camera for me, but far too much money. I'd be happy with a Leica SL series as well. Well done Matt!
Thanks Lucy! They are nice for sure!
Matt, if i may; the X2D also has only 1/125 with old, non leaf-shutter lenses. With leaf-shutter lenses you can go up to 1/2000th. The colours of the Hasselblad are crazy good.
For info; the Fuji GFX can also do 1/2000 sync when you use the Hasselblad and Fuji leaf shutter lenses; with a Fuji native adapter for Hasselblad H lenses.
Thanks! Yes I know the Fuji has the same sensor too
After having the X2D in hand a few times, I just got a used X1DII and it is pretty great so far. Yes, it is slow but so am I. No IBIS and the older sensor ... But overall I think I am getting 99% the experience and apart from resolution 95% of the image quality for about 35% of the money. The new XCD V lenses are fantastic though, I'm not even interested in anything that came before. I got the 38mm and am now waiting for the 90mm.
Congrats! Yes if I was to get one i'd get an older model too for the same reasons you mention.
Do you recommend and prefer the Hasselblad X2D 100C Medium Format Digital Camera Body or Hasselblad 907X 100C? Which two lens you recommend for travel and portraits?
Another terrific review Matt. Not super familiar with the Hasselblad but would imagine the closest Leica competitor is actually the S3. Although that is more than twice the price of the X2D whereas the X2D is (I think) around 20% more than the latest SL2.
Thanks and yes. Leica S body are the MF Leica option.
a few thoughts on comparison of these cameras. the ergonomics of the hasselblad gives it a much lighter feel. the color renditions from the hasselblad are stunning. hasselblad gives a wider range of tones difficult to achieve from leica without post-prossing. medium format is superior in low light photography - . the focus peeking does not exist when set to fully automatic but is present in other selections and works quite well. finally
on price point - hasselblad offers a kit lens (45mm/f4) and x camera on specials
Thanks! I did enjoy trying the X2D
Hi Matt,
I own the predecessor, the X1D II and personally I find the Hasselblad X series are the most beautiful designed cameras on the market today. For me this an important fact, because a tool you like, you will use more often and with more joy.
In addition, Hasselblad has by far the best and most intuitive menu design and the best integration of touch functionality (at least in my eyes). And also the wireless features a very well made and Hasselblad provides a really good app for remote control.
But there are a few things I miss and unfortunately they didn't fix this with the X2D:
First I would like to have a live histogram in the viewfinder
But my biggest wish would be integrating TrueFocus from the H-series (available from H4 onwards) into the X-series. It is such a brilliant feature (and it works absolutely reliable) especially for portrait work. For those who don't know, Truefocus compensates automatically for the focus-shift when you are using the focus and recompose method (in contrast to a simple AF lock). This would also get rid of manually moving the focus-field around by touch or the scroll wheels. I even would prefer it over automatic eye-detection or similar things because you would not have to rely on the quality of algorithms.
Btw., you are correct: the X2D has no AF-C
Cheers
Christian
Thanks Christian! Yes to no AFC, AFS only. Yes I remember truefocus being launched. Maybe they’ll fix with future firmware..?
Yes I do not understand why we cannot get the histogram in the viewfinder. Neither do I understand why we cannot have BW jpgs (and bw image in viewfinder). These are just software issues why don't they fix them? Matt in terms of the viewfinder you can actually set the EVF brightness so that it matches the images you get.
Nice video Matt and a wise choice in the end.
You are also forgetting some important stuff.
The Hasselblad camera uses lenses with a leaf shutter that's why you are not limited to that low shutterspeed flash sync.
Just like the Leica Q series.
This implicates that you will not be able to use your vintage lenses on that camera , besides the the fact that it is a bigger sensor which would give you serious vignetting and 100 MP for vintage lenses is absolute a wrong choice.
With that in mind the whole price tag for switching will be much more cause you have to buy the lenses that you like too (keep in mind the 0.8 conversion to 35 format) .
In the video you price the sensor by showing the pictures but it is for a big part due to the lenses too.
Then the maintenance of those cameras, finding a Leica store and/or repair shop is not easy but what about Hasselblad, since you are depending on that camera as source of income.
In favour of the Hasselbald, it comes with Phocus, a great and powerful free RAW convertor, that is build for Hasselblad image format whit some feature that are Hasselblad/Phocus specific.
But maybe in the future there is money enough to have both and it is always nice to try new stuff
Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Rob, yes I should have covered lenses. There’s no chance I’ll swap as I like using interesting lenses to render more interesting photos.
I would love to get my hands on the hasselblad, incredible images , maybe one day
Thanks Chris, yes it was nice to have the chance to try one!
I have this camera, really love it and my Leica SL set is being sold right now…
Both have their strengths!
Hi Matt
you don't have to use the menu button, just swipe up or down on the screen
Concerning colors, I sometime have to struggle with colors with my Leica Q and Capture One, never with my 2 Hasselblad X cameras and Phocus soft.
Thank you! Yes I heard Hasselblad are great with C1
The Nikon Z6 you tested recently also charges via USBC - provided you have the newer version of the battery (ENEL-15C, if I remember right - check)... can also download images that way. Also, if you use a black and white profile to view monochrome on LCD and in viewfinder won't this give you a bit of a false exposure/histogram?.... given that it's quite a contrasty profile. The histogram/live exposure preview/zebras will be reflected by the profile used and not what the raw file will look like
Thanks David! I’m stuck in the dark ages (none of my Leica can be charged like this)
I love the medium-format image quality and don't mind the slow medium-format handling. I hate how expensive it is... but then I think of the last time I did a model shoot with my tired old Mamiya 645 1000S. I went through one pack (five rolls, 75 exposures total) of 120-size Portra 400 film, then sent it off to a high-quality lab for processing and scans. Total tab: just about exactly US $200. It was fun, and I'd love to do this kind of shoot every weekend... but if I did, allowing a couple of weekends off for holidays, I'd be spending $200 x 50 weekends = TEN THOUSAND US dollars per year on film and processing alone. And if I decided 75 exposures wasn't enough and wanted to shoot two packs, I'd be at $20,000. Obviously only the obnoxiously rich can afford to contemplate doing this kind of shoot as a regular hobby... but the obnoxiously rich who are smart with their money will find the X2D a surprisingly sensible purchase!
PS for Matt: What do out-of-focus areas look like when shooting at wide apertures with the X2D vs. your 36x24mm cameras? Just curious...
Thanks James! I made a similar calculation for film vs. digital back ..but in the past it was cheaper to shoot film! I didn’t notice much difference in DOF tbh
I miss my Mamiya 645 1000S from back in the day! But as you say, today's film prices are NUTS (I used to get all my film for free!!!!!)
I am shocked. Well I was when I first tried the original XD1 that it didn’t have monochrome or the ability to shoot square. Two things that seem synonymous with their heritage. It just baffles me as to why they wouldn’t. Anyway that’s enough to turn me off a camera. I am surprised they haven’t changed this. I think it’s the same for all their cameras. Thanks.
The X1D has a square crop amount about 5 others. This will come to the X2D with firmware.
@@gordoncahill1170 that’s great to hear they introduced that. Seemed so obvious. Anyway I won’t use a camera these days unless I can see what I am doing in mononchrome.
Thanks Len, agree square would make so much sense ..big oversight from them
I have been using X2D since the launch, for me X2D is the best camera for general photography. Great built-in stabilization (paring with 38/55V you can get away shooting 2S hand held), great color rendering, best-in-the-market control and menu. But there’re still 2 complains that I have to address as a Hasselblad mirrorless user since X1D. Where is the built-in corp and where is focus peaking, Hasselblad?? These were feature in X1D2 and they straight removed in for X2D, why?
Yes I see the frustration from other users too.
I see it as a software issue. Maybe enough users could ask Hasselblad to include them in the next upgrade.
Both now available in V2 of the software.
Very interesting video.
Hasselblad was always the tool of the professionals, Leica was for collectors. 😉
It looks like Hasselblad has taken over the «collectors» role.😂
Ah interesting viewpoint, I’ve not heard this before - nice!
I’m shocked that the SL can’t charge by the USBc cable. I charge with an android charging block and usbc cord often with my TL2, so it surprises me a much grander Leica wouldn’t be able to. Great video and comparison!
Thanks, yes later models were ok but not the original sadly.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I didn’t know that! Thanks for the insight!
Here’s a comment 😊
There’s no comparison whatsoever. I use M for 20 years and Hasselblad H system from H3 onwards.
Hasselblad is relative even with Phase one but Leica is a toy in comparison. I used these systems for long enough, I could talk for days on why the Blad is the better system despite of our opinion. But the Leica is nice and small and therefore very pleasant on travel and all that but since the overheating issues with the massive sensor of the Blad is solved, it is the camera at the moment of time. All these little technical differences you can work around if you know what you doing but if you want to shoot with a big sensor in harsh environments you might run into problems you simply don’t run into with the small frame set up.
The Leica S3 has pretty images quality but still I rip that system apart compared to the Hasselblad image 16bit raw file. It’s another world in terms of look and post capability.
It takes time to adapt to proper MFormat but it’s addictive
Thanks Mario! Yes I think if you get used to large files it's hard to go back. I miss my H3d-31 CCD colour files sometimes.
Enjoyed your presentation. Very informative! Thank you!
Thank you Rod!
The flip screen has two set positions. It actually flips almost horizontal.
Thanks David! Sorry I missed that. Makes more sense!
The zebra is not on the X2D yet, Continuous auto-focus is expected in a firmware upgrade also. The screen has two levels it can be raised to. There is another past where you went that brings the screen to almost horizontal. It is a major expense to jump to HB as most of your lenses will not work on it. The Jupiter 8 does work and my CZJ internals and glass '51 is quite nice but to be truthful the XCD 55V is better. Great review, again.
Thanks for the insight Zoltan. Yes I should have covered lenses. The options available to Leica are endless.
The X2D is an amazing machine. Like you said, it is stunning to look at and to hold, has a great interface, and the glass is among the best of the best. So why am I not buying it? In my opinion, it has too much resolution. I’m still pressing the shutter on my S007 and using S and HC glass. I could probably use HC glass all the time and be quite happy. But wait, S glass is S glass. Moving on, I wish Leica made an adaptor to use HC glass on my SL2-S. Presently, I’m using digital when it makes sense and jumping to film for the best shots. I’ve been getting a lot of punch out of a 7ii for the past few months. Thanks for another great review!
Thanks agree it would be nice to try some MF glass on the Leica, even if we don’t get the same effect.
Yes they should also make a 50 Mp version with 1 Tb hard-drive and image-stabilisation (just like Fuji)... and faster AF, histogram and BW in viewfinder ;o).
Just upgraded to the A7RIII. 😂
Sold everything else, but kept the Carl Zeiss Distagon 2.8/21, Distagon 2/35 and Planar 1.4/85 on a Rayqual adapter.
It's my poor man's Leica.
I don’t know Sony but I’d imagine a used Leica is the same price.
Hi Matt
Great opportunity to test this superb camera
I’m impressed by its design but I’m surprised by the bad AF you mention.
Regarding colors, like Fuji GFX100, they are real whereas Leica tends always to trick colors a little to give a sexy look but at the end they are false colors
This is what I love the most with these Hasselblad and Fuji sensors and color science.
Hi Didier thanks! AFS was great for me. Just no AFC for others. Yes people seem to love Hassy colours.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
Ok, so the AFS is working properly and does the job. Is it as good as a lumix S1R or a Leica SL2 ?
It’s the AFC that is not existing.
@@DidierMOULINPhotography yes for single shot it’s fine.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom thank you ! This camera is appealing for sure. We can’t have the perfection and all is a matter of compromises…
Slow AF has always been a problem with the Hasselblad X series (slightly improved in the X2D but does not match Fuji medium format). As for colors Fuji used to have a problem with greens, slowly corrected with the X-pro and XT series to pretty decent now. Leica has never tended to "trick colors", quite the opposite in fact. They stayed away from over saturated colors and high contrast for a long time and slightly moved toward that after the M240 (probably when they adopted what is most likely to be SONY sensors). But we are talking about Hasselblad and the X2D, and you may find that the colors are more accurate and "pleasant" with Hasselblad but it is, I know, a subjective assessment. In any case both Fuji and Hasselblad use SONY sensors, if not exactly the same ones, the only difference is the software behind them.
I think I would go with the Hasselblad over the SL system.
It is nice but it needs improving first.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I need to grow another kidney I can sell first anyway, so they have about as much as I need to grow that additional kidney.
I had the choice between the x1d and a m10r guess what I choose?
I'd give the wrong answer as a mirrorless fan but I think you went for the M10R. (Great camera, my student had one at my last London workshop)
X2D - now AF hugely improved with face detection - from Nov 2023.
Not sure how X2D tethers to Focus / Capture One / LR.
Expensive compared with Fuji GFX (also has video but not leaf lenses as standard).
Thanks for the update!
Is the X2D vs SL-s a fair comparison ?
Same size, same weight yet only 25 mp vs 100 mp. 1 tb of memory in the X2D.
No really but I own the SL and was leant the X2D. The SL3 will be a closer comparison.
Thanks for this Matt - really useful review.
Thanks Mark!
I gave the X2D a go but a bit too bulky as I travel light . I am happy with my M10 and Mandler lenses. Take care
Thanks Izzy! Yes Leica M wins for size!
Thanks again Matt, im happy everytime you have a video to share. Been looking for the XD1 II for a time, not the latest XD2, so i decided now to keep my Q2 & Sl2-s. Keep up the content as much you can & possible. Have a nice weekend!
Thanks Patrik, appreciated. New videos coming, I’ve been away for shoots.
Thanks for your great view! It might be a bad question but still very curious about how to choose Nikon Z6ii and Leica Sl. They are at similar prices right now and both of them are mirrorless cameras. Thanks!
Leica Inspire me to shoot, others don’t (if that answers your question). I’d get Leica but I love Leica and enjoy basic features.
Looks like an awesome camera :) One thing maybe for the SL2/-s they are supposed to have a high res mode where the sensor shifts a pixel four times for the same shot.. you should be getting 4x the sensor resolution on that and increased color accuracy (it would essentially emulate a ccd type sensor from what I understood..). Only usable for reproduction work but have been looking into mirrorless also because it could provide me with nicer film scans. Not sure if Hasselblad has this and if it would even matter because it already has better colour depth but just saying for specific use cases a consideration.
Hey Thomas, yes! Lumix also do this 1 high res image option. (Like my S5)
The problem with sensor shift is that the camera has to be on a tripod. You do not really get improved color accuracy as it is the same sensor. As for "emulating CCD rendering" (why, knowing the colors were slightly off, meaning some were slightly more saturated than the real ones) it is just a matter of software and can easily be replicated in most image-processing software (saved as a default setting and systematically applied if needed).
The screen opens more than what you've shown in the video, I think you have it at the 40 degree angle.. Although I wish it flipped a full 90 degrees, 70 does the trick :)
Thanks William, agree 90 would be even better but 70 beats 40!
Would you go for 55mm f2.5 + 90mm f2.5 OR 38mm f2.5 + 90mm f2.5?
Ask yourself not me. 90 is less useful but great if you can find a use for it
I was tempted by the X2D before bying my SL2S but today I do not regret. I wanted to stay in the Leica environement to be able to benefit from my M lenses.
So medium format only on film (120 - 6x9 and 6x12 ) with high scan resolution 🙂
Thanks Jérome! Me too for MF :)
2 solutions vraiment différentes !
X2D and SL2 seem like a better apples-to-apples comparison - why did you go with the SL2S?
@@bedlamknights sorry my student needed to use one of his cameras so I couldn’t test the X2D & SL2 at the same time, hence used my SL. The S is good for those wanting 24mp , IBIS, Better AF etc
Hasselblad of course ! No comparison !
Thanks! :)
when i had the X1DII the biggest problem for me is the shutter lag. how is the shutter lag on the X2D?
Hi Dexter, i'm no expert on this but it seemed fine.
I own the original x1d and tried and have an x2d on the way. There is a very noticeable lack of shutter lag on the x2d in comparison to the x1d. If you are used to the x1d the x2d feels much sportier in all speeds of operation.
@@theresjustnotellingfpv4822 that's good to know. X1DII in hindsight shutter and overall operation was laggy and its EVF leaves a lot to be desired (its AF is ok with me actually) ..it's jarring especially when you switch back-and-forth with a more responsive camera with a much better EVF. the reason i put with it was the unbeatable image quality.
to Hasselblad's credit, the X cameras have gorgeous and intuitive menu/controls despite having limited control options.
Good, honest review. Thanks Matt for having to suffer using the wonderful Hassy: someone has to do it and take one for the team!. Now, the question is do I sell my SL2-S, M10-P and eight lenses, and buy the Hasselblad and one lens? I'll pass. I'm happy with my Leicas and I don't need 100 megapixels, nice as that would be. I'm waiting to see what Leica do this year. An SL3-S with 30-ish megapixels and phase-detect autofocus is my absolute dream.
Thanks Brian, no stick with Leica! :) Yes SL3 to come!
Not exactly sure how you calculated prices here. The X2D is as expensive as an M11 (les than an M11 mono) and as for lenses their 45mm P is cheaper than a brand new Leica 35 mm.
@@BrunoChalifour I was basing my calculations on what I would get if I sold my Leicas and lenses and bought the Hasselblad new.
@@Gynra Still I think your calculations is off a few $1000. Look at the price of an M10P + SL2S alone (unless your cameras are wrecks and your lenses made in China, or are Voigtlanders or Zeisses [which does not mean they are bad, just they are far cheaper than Leicas]).
@@BrunoChalifour You'd be surprised. I recently considered selling my Vario-Elmarit SL 24-90mm lens (£4,520 new), in excellent condition (all my gear is like new or excellent). MPB offered me £1515 for it, which seemed fair as they have one for sale for just over £2,199. Maybe I'd get a bit more for my Apo-Summicron SL 90 mm. I'd probably get £4k for the M10-P (to buy second-hand they are just over £5k) and maybe £2.5K for the SL2-S. My Leica M lenses are not hugely expensive ones even though three of them are Leicas. The other lenses are Zeiss, Sigma and Panasonic. So I reckon £10.5K for the lot. The Hassy is £7329 and the lens I would want to go with it, the 35-75 is £4859. Even if I got £12k, it still would only just cover the cost of the Hassy and one lens. I'm sticking to my Leicas :)
Wow those example RAW photo's from the Hasselblad look astonishing beautiful! I also love the military brown/kaki color of the Hasselblad you've shown in the video. Is it also called 'reporter' version at Hasselblad? Where to buy this version? I live in Belgium and usually get my gear from Kamera Express, but everything is sold out there and temporarily unavailable.
Thanks! It might be the lighting on the camera.. it was a grey-black colour from memory (cover image looks more brown from the tungsten lighting)
Hey Matt. I’m sure others have mentioned the issue with comparing the SL to the Hasselblad, instead of using the SL2. Now, we have the SL3, it would be interesting to see how it compares
Thanks, yes that was the old camera I had with me at the time but if you saw my new SL3 video this is now more comparable with the similar screen, battery etc,
The hasselblad is way lighter on paper. You said there are the same weight ; is that a feeling ?
Hi Ben, yes just when using they felt quite similar (the lens will make a huge difference*) ..I had a plastic lens on the Leica as I was testing for that video.
Interesting video Matt. I have been quite interested in both so far but have not decided to pull the trigger to purchase either camera. The X2D apparently does not have the build quality of the H system and has a few wrinkles to be ironed out in terms of software and ease of use with focussing. As for Leica it seems best to wait for the release of the SL3.
Yes I would maybe hold fire on the Hassy. Maybe say it’s the last one from them (and those that own it say it’s not perfect).
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I certainly hope it doesn’t end there but in comparison to Leica I see Leica as a company with a much better and clearer direction of their future and though I haven’t looked at any numbers my guess is that they’re light years ahead of Hasselblad in the accounting department.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaComYou think the X2D is the last Hasselblad release? Or did I misread your comment? If so, why do think that is?
Man must be from Kings family to have both Hasselblad and Leica 😮
Yes! Just one of those smart guys that built a business at a young age so can now afford both. Something to aspire to for me!
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom kudos Sir 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 happy to hear ☺️👏🏻👏🏻
Very good comparison ! I also think Leica lenses are a tiny bit sharper.
Thanks!
I returned an SL. I’d love the Hassy, but too expensive for me.
Maybe the earlier Hassy X cameras..?
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Don't they all have some weird issues? BTW, a prominent RUclipsr is returning his 4th bricked M11!
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Hmm, I'm looking at X1Ds now. 😁
The screen has two distinct angles. You probably just got stuck at the first. If you give it a little nudge it goes to something like 85 degrees.
Thanks Michael! Dumb user as mentioned, thanks! :)
Another great review! Love this but won’t be adding one to the kit. Nope… 907X 100 incoming though…😊
Thanks Paul and very nice!
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom As an update I can say that the files from the 907X CFV100 are astounding!!! Beyond what I imagined. I do still love shooting with my M11P, but it is inP#2 behind the Hasselblad. I never thought I would own anything to better the Leica except another Leica!!! I have one lens only currently, the 38mm as it is impossible to get another currently. I do have the 90/2.5 coming...waiting very impatiently... 🤣
Thanks for this review Matt. Ideally, you would take that rubber joy stick from the SL and get Hasselblad to accept that it is the best way to move AF point without rupturing the aesthetics of the camera. It doesn't upset the look or feel of any iteration of SL and nr would it spoil an X camera. I've used the X2D for landscape for eight months now and its still annoying having to ear mark the top right corner as the 'move AF zone' and then do that with a cocked thumb while looking through the stellar evf. You are not imagining things: There is no live histogram; there is no live 'clipping' warning for highlights; you cannot configure EVF or screen in mono mode; you cannot have a grid with a level in the capture screens; and you are also spot-on in finding that the shots are always over exposed compared to what you think you are getting via the EVF info so that continual adjustment is required. Despite the manifold 'missing' features or the fantastic simplicity of the camera 9 whichever you prefer) it is a phenomenal image making instrument for subjects which do not move much.
Thanks Seth, yes others have listed the many missing features. I only use the basics so overlooked many of them.
Really enjoyable video, some exotica is best experienced second hand. On the camera it would be great if they added a multi resolution sensor for the H2D, I’m sure most of the time 30mp would be enough + it would probably speed the camera up.
Thanks Marcus, agree for multi-res sensor, 100%
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Big day today, after more procrastination than you can imagine, I’ve finally followed your advice and ordered a Voigtlander Nokton 50mm F1.2… super excited. Keep up the great work, it’s great to see you’re meeting so many interesting people.
Hey Matt, thanks yet again for another amazing review - you’re one of the best people out there. That said, I’m not sure comparing the x2d to Leica’s again SL is the best combo. I have the M11 and X2d and I’m hard pressed to find any image quality advantage when comparing the images of both cameras. Unless, you have a specific need for the X2d I would get an FF camera with the latest high megapixel sensors.
Thanks Elie! Yes agree M11 is a more fair test. Thanks for the insight and M cameras easily win for size!
What camera you use for pov video?
GoPro Hero 10 Black
I assume by poor focus you actually meant poor continuous shooting speeds… The single shot AF speed is actually about the same with the new XCDV lenses and the SL2. No continuous af on the X2D yet. May or may not come with firmware but it’s not great on the GFX so I don’t expect much.
Thanks Gordon, yes I used AFS and no issues.
You are sticking with Voig not Leica 😂. Jokes aside, X2D serves one purpose - large prints. It’s really a commercial tool to plaster photos across buildings and bus stops. If you don’t need to do that as the endpoint product delivery then don’t get it. A M9 will suffice for most clients
Haha.. If Voigtlander made cameras then maybe! (New ones)(I have Bessa too) ..yes 100MP is way too much for my needs.
Hi Matt, nice video on a lovely camera.
IIRC, the dynamic range of the SL2 is 14.3 EV, not 12. Also, the grip on the SL2 and SL2-S is much better than that on the SL.
Thanks John! It was the grip shape more than the feel. I was using the SL2 on the same trip (for the Sigma 85mm video)
Hi excellent video and channel thank you : did you try to compare the hassleblad files with the Sigma Quattro H and sigma 1.4 Art lenses (sensor size aside) I am stunned by the film look, color depth, sharpness and texture coming from the Quattro H they look like 6x9 film scans without the dust issues
Thanks! I’ve not tried Sigma but I know some love the colours. Noted thanks!
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom the sigma software is a bit slow but has been improved, it apparently works better on Mac than PC (I have a PC) but it’s the best software to extract the best of the raw files. Some shoot DNG files but I compared both and the best is to photograph in raw and PP in the Sigma pro software. The jpeg files are pretty useless if the WB or exposure is a bit off. I compared some slides taken withy Fuji 617 and the Quattro H in panoramic mode and to be fair, the 617 outputs a bit more detail but it’s minimal compared to the advantage of being able to shoot film-like photos on the Quattro H. In full apsc H mode 3:2 , portraits and landscapes are just insanely detailed but the iso must be kept ideally between 100 and 200, 400 max if needed.
Wait for the inevitable S4 medium format camera from Leica.
It's rumoured to be better than both the Fujifilm GFX100 II and the Hassleblad X2D.
Haha we can hope!
An interesting comparison with the Leica SL/SL2 - thank you. I use the X2D for landscape photography and travel. It fits perfectly with my idea of photography - being easily portable and a joy to use. The menu system is the best I have ever used and ridiculously easy. Focussing is easy to do - getting sharp photos every time. Yes, I know the issue about the joystick - but I have found using the touchscreen, with the camera to my eye, is a good replacement and I am used to it now. This is a camera for a slow photographer. It is not for sport or wildlife. It is a thing of beauty and I love using it. In some ways it is like returning to the 4x5 such is the quality and size of the LCD screen. Thanks again
Yes a pretty camera for sure!
Hi Matt I am a beginner photographer I want to know for yr experience using this both camera Hasselblad x2d and Leica Q2 which is the the best choice for street photographers and easy to use. Because I like the Leica Q2 but the Hasselblad x2d I think the specs is higher then Leica tks
Hi, wait for Q3 if you want Q2 with higher specs experience. 60mp. I think Q series are much better for street.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
Thank You yes I have view the Q3 Review. Wait for the Q3 specification and and performance. The only I regret if the Q3 don’t have the…
Dust and spray water proof
The Leica Q2 is the only camera in its class to feature IP protective sealing, rating of 52, against dust and spraywater.
Is the Hasselblads colour depth not scaled back? I mean taken at 16Bit but recorded with empty 2 bits?
That was the X1D series. The X2D sensor is true 16 bit.
Great question Oliver, I’m not smart enough to answer this but others will I’m sure.
@@gordoncahill1170 Thanks. I did not know.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I guess someone knew it.
X2D is indeed true 16bit
The x2d is great with the 90mm f/4 leica m macro lens that you know well Matt. You cant currently get the new 38, 55 and 90 xcd lenses, long wait times.
Matt have you tried the Leica S3?
Thanks John, great insight! I've used the S2 a few times, not the S3 yet. I'll try to find a way to test one.
With everything going digital viewfinder the Leica S3 still has a huge analog to look through, it’s amazing!
I think the Leica SL and Q viewfinder’s are both better than the Hasselblad X1D and X2D.
I have a love/hate relationship with my X2D but the pictures are stunning!
The S series weigh 1250 gms and the lenses the same each. The S series is now dead.
BTW, the screen has 2 positions, I see you only show the 1st one. you can pull a bit more up, its hard that is why you may have thought that was it.
Thank you, yes sorry that was me being dumb. The second position makes more sense.
Hasselblad. Dang! I will just dream on........Fortunately I am pretty happy with my Leica M6/MP typ 240 and set of Leica primes.......
Film Leica still win Marc so you’re safe! :)
That orange button is very cool
Ha yes I like that too!
I look forward to buying one in 20 years
Haha see you there Connor! :) ..I have 2012, 2015, 2015, 2019 Leicas :)
Another great video !! X2D does look cool, I think it is not fair for to compare 8 year old SL and I see you are using 4 year old SL2 to compare with 2022 X2D towards the end. The more fair comparison would have been SL2 or SL2s esp around USB charging, flash sync as well. Overall, always check your videos for great insights. Great honest reporting. What do you think new Leica SL 100-400 Vs Samsung 70-200 2.8 around portrait photography. Of course, the focal length differences and low light performance are obvious but what about real life clarity.
Thanks agree! I tried to mention all SL cameras with my answers for this reason.
i reckon you should get one
Haha, if I win the lottery (to fund the camera and a new computer!)
Hasselblad has 1.0 magnification for the EVF. IT is the larger and the best one on the market
Thanks it was nice for sure.
I recall many moons ago Leica X models had a poor reputation for AF performance, since the Leica Q was released that stereotype disappeared virtually overnight. Hasselblad X2D seems to be wearing the Leicas old trousers on that topic, and shocking to see a camera that expensive with AF from the dark ages.
Yes not great cameras if you want fast AF but for my needs the Q is fine.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I have the Q, hands down the greatest compact camera I’ve ever owned in 40 years of pastime photography. I’m selling a camera in excellent condition after 6 years. I will return to Leica film one day, I have to batten down the hatches for a little while to ride out a financial hurdle.
I am also sticking with my Leica.
Great to hear Wilfred!
the hasselblad had the best grip ever
Yes loved it!
aside from cost.... the X2D is clunky and awkward compared to Leica, Fuji, Nikon, etc. Images are beautiful. I am processing in Phocus as Capture One does not accommodate X2d files. Moved away from LR years ago. Shot hundreds of wedding in the 60s with my 500C but that was then... pace of photography has changed much since then. Not sure if I can justify keeping the X2d.
Thanks Stuart, agree. Other Hasselblad favs I know were also less than impressed with the X2D. I viewed it with fresh eyes only.
If you export TIFF files from Phocus and use an EXIF editor to erase X2D EXIF infos, Capture One will recognize it without any problem, I guess Phase One is the one who's acting like a douche here.
@@GlaciaDay yes...major pain when trying to work up a photo shoot with more than a few pictures... have been exporting to DNG then finishing in photoshop... many times longer than using Leica, Fuji, Nikon etc files in Capture One
I think a 4/3 picture size is odd, I would never consider shooting in that format , what ever camera brand
Me neither until I found myself using it!
if you could only choose between 1) Hasselblad X2D 100C or 2) Leica M11 which one would it be?
Haha you always ask these questions. Buy the one that suits your needs NOT my needs. No 2 photographers shoot the same.
Maybe Hasselblad wasn't set up to show you what you get, but what average metering would look like. Worth checking out.
Many modern cameras can be charged via USB-c these days. And some older can do that too via USB 3.0.
If not fully articulated screens, Fuji has 3 way ones. As well as some Sonys.
No continuous AF on Hassy in 2023?? Really? Come on...
On the other hand, that clutch system on the lens could be the blame. Course Fuji had some lenses with clutch design on they X line of cameras, but they had to drop that design in order to implement modern, faster motors in newer lenses...
Thanks yes I’m sure some of the issues I found can be fixed with reading the manual.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Yeah we should read the manual first 🤣
1/4000 Flash Sync with the new lens amigo!
Yes! A bit like the H system (lens dependent).. I still have my H2.. love it for film
the cheapskate in me loves the SL with all my legacy lenses. However... my heart wants to shoot the Hassy with the 38mm and the 90mm v combo.
I bet you'd love the 65mm 1.4 mitakon lens for this system
The X2D is a lovely camera no question!
Has anybody tried the Hasselblad X2D/X1D with adapted lenses where you are limited to using an electronic shutter - is it an issue in the real world?
Sorry i've not. Maybe try some Hassy YT channels
Fujifilm GFX 100 II...
?
I’ve not tried one yet
So funny. Downloading 100MP files over usb-a to usb-c 😃😃😜 i hope it was a usb 3.1 gen 1. Also charging your hasselblad with a usb type-a only gives 5v 2amps max. Use a proper usb-c to usb-c cable which allows for 90 watts of charging.
Thanks for spotting my choice of cables! I needed to get smarter to identify the different types.
I agree that the Hasselblad is gorgeous and very tempting, but personally, if I were to buy into a medium format system, it would definitely be Fujifilm. The GFX 100S is not as pretty as the X2D but in my opinion it is a better camera, and overall Fuji is a much better and complete system. On top of that, in value for money Fujifilm is just unbeatable.
Thanks, yes Fuji win for value for sure!
No, the colors produced by Hasselblad are still superior. Fuji has really ugly colors.
The LCD tilts flat. Has 2 positions
Thanks.. I totally missed that. Makes better sense now!
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom yea the second position takes a little more to click it. I didn’t want to break the screen lol
Your other video you sold your Leica lenses to save money to buy a house. Now you might buy a new Hasselblad??? Selling those Leica lenses won’t make that much of a difference for a down payment on a house.
Thanks Thomas! Yes I’ll be renting for another 12months even without the Hassy!
"the model was feeling quite brave" lmao
She decided to go topless mid-shoot :)
Hasi or Leica, its the pilot that took most of my attention.
I am using the same bag and its near perfection. I only wish they used more leather components to increase its retro cool look :-)
Thanks Yoram! I’m glad you spotted that teaser clip! Full video to follow :)
The shutter speed being 1/4000 max on the new lenses and 1/2000 on the older is kinda slow compared to Leica
Thanks, yes I have been spoilt with Leica and not needing ND filters
The X2D has 1/6000s with the electronic shutter.
In terms of specs the m11 would be a fairer comparison
Thanks Mark, I’ll try to cover the M11 in the future if I get a chance.
I am worried about the degraded service from DJI (Hasselblad's owners)!
Yes this will be a problem I think ..
Good grief Matt is your eyesight deteriorating 😎Get the Hasselblad . Go for X1D ll $3300 used
Haha thanks! Yes prices are coming down slowly. They are great feeling cameras. Up there with Leica. Most camera brands I try don't inspire me like these brands do.
Few more points to mention. It can or can't be considered a pro, one is full frame, and the other isn’t. And cons to consider, there is no mechanical shutter on the Hasselblad body. Might not be important to some, but it is to a few. In addition to the shutter, it also greatly limits the lens choices. Stock lenses are obvious, but for every lens to get for this camera expect to pay a minimum of 1k plus. You can practically put any lens on the Leica since it is full frame. But you are limited to a Hasselblad lens with leaf shutters, older medium format lenses with an electronic shutter only, and full frame lenses which may or may not cover the medium format sensor. AND still on an electronic shutter. Two different beasts really IMH.
You can adapt lenses to the X2D but need to be careful of the slow rite-speed of the Hassie e-shutter. So as long as you’re shooting static subjects, landscapes etc, you can adapt any lens to it. Shoot anything moving and you’ll get major distortion.
@@ndt7692 👍Agreed, its like I said. Important to some, but maybe not others. Adapt any medium format lens (not all full frames will cover the sensor) = slow style shoots only
Thanks Juan, great point on the lenses.. yes Leica provide a much better platform for this reason.
