- In this video, I am taking a look at the Hasselblad X2D and the Leica SL3. Both cameras are beautiful examples of industrial, minimals design and give you incredible output. I will explore how both cameras are similar and different in their UX approach and share some pictures I was able to make with them.

Wow the Hasselblad colours look incredible! Blown away by the difference actually
The HNCS has some secret sauce to it upon first inspection 💯
HNCS (Hasselblad Natural Colour Solution) is jaw dropping good. That's why I have chosen the X2D over Fuji's GF system, despite of the lenses Fuji has. Besides, Fujinon produces/produced also the Hasselblad lenses of the H-series, which is unfortunately discontinued.
I used to have an H4D. The color difference in Hasselblad is unreal. This is not a new thing. It's been in their system for quite some time now. It's just a shame that they don't have faster lenses.

I'm very biased as an X2D owner. Personally I like to start with the best/rich image quality and dial it down, the IBIS is insanely good. Changing lenses is not that awkward, all I do is place the screen on the palm of my hand and use the tip of my middle finger to press the button and other hand to remove the lens no problem.
IBIS is a must for 60 and 100 megapixel sensors imo, both cameras are great in that area. And there is something about that Hasselblad IQ indeed. Thanks for sharing your lens changing technique. I really like getting feedback from more experienced users ✌🏻

I own both the SL3 and the X2D and I use both differently. The X2D replaces more my (sold) M11. I own a few V primes like the 28/38/55/90 and use the camera when I slow down and look for the ultimate IQ. The files are gorgeous and I like the experience.
The SL3 is more versatile, faster, has continuous AF and I use Sigma iseries, panasonic S and the two smaller (Panasonic in another dress) 35/50 mm Leica SL asph primes. Panasonic just released a tiny 100mm macro and lenses like the Panasonic S 16-35mm are great. So I have positioned both cams very differently and the X2D takes philosophically the spot of the M11. When I need it to be smaller the Q3 still exists.

Menus and build quality are fantastic on both and I even like the bauhaus aesthetic of the SL3 a bit more.
Tip: fast M primes on the x2d have an even shallower dof due to the larger sensor size. My Summilux 50mm looks like a Noctilux !
If I was hard pressed, I‘d keep the SL3 due to its versatility and the lens ecosystem (and smaller Zooms. The XCD Zooms are way too big and slow !

Hi, what is your experience with the colors, X2D seems to nail it out of the box, but if you set it to manual Identical white balance and so on, what is the difference than ? Do you get in post the same results with a few steps or do you have to go deeper... I used most systems in past and every one has it times, i would instand go for the x2d if they would have not the rolling shutter problems with adapted lenses... thx
I had initial same issue with the X2d and my peak design anchors. but if you take the ends off the strap that comes with the camera the Peak Design anchors fit quite well and I've been using it like that walking around with zero issues and it's not going to drop /fall off.

They are both cameras that's where the differences end. The Hassie is on a league of its own and is head and shoulders above the Leica. The color depth, fidelity and color science of hasselblad is pretty much unmatched in the industry.

I love the diopter adjustment on my SL2-S. Sometimes I'm shooting with my glasses, sometimes without. I know where to put the adjustment for each, and I can just do it without any fuss at any time.
If you need to switch a lot like that, it makes sense to have it readily available as a dial. ✌🏻
I have the Hasselblad X2D and love it. It's slowed me down with my photography and yes the images are spectacular.

FYI - focus point on the X2D can also be moved using the scroll wheel on the handgrip.
Not initially as easy as using a joystick but once it becomes a habit it's just as intuitive.
Thanks for adding the scroll wheel alternative input, for the X And Y axis movement of the focal point. I forgot to mention that one indeed. Did it take you a long time to get proper muscle memory?
Not really. This camera is my 75th BD present to myself so a whole new experience I wholeheartedly embrace and thoroughly enjoy.
I also thought to Hasselblad files look consistently warm. I also don’t see a “greater depth” of colour in the Hasselblad files, that I see in the Leica files. I do prefer the look of the design of the Hasselblad and the large medium format sensor. What amazing cameras, thanks for the video 👍

Hi ! Thanks for the review ! I had an SL2 and now have the X2D, and I am frankly baffled by the Hasselblad natural color science, and resolution. Amazing. But nevertheless will acquire the SL3 when available, to accommodate my Leica lenses ...
All bases are covered with those 2 cameras 💯🙌🏻. I really like the SL for M lenses, the EVF and IBIS add an extra level to them.
Excellent video and very informative about both cameras. I have the X2D which was in my view an upgrade from the Fuji GFX 50 system. The X2D is which is fantastic for landscape photography with the The Hasselblad natural colour science being superb. Hardly any adjustments needed. Very good menu system which is easy to operate versus Fuji. Even so, If the SL3 had come at the same time as the X2D, I would have looked very seriously at it.
Thanks for sharing your personal experience. Most people that have the chance to use the X2D are impressed by its quality. But like you say, the SL3 is an interesting camera that competes on multiple levels.
I had a X2D, SL3 wins for me.
More flexible, continuous auto focus, video quality straight out of the camera is amazing.
But the SL APO lenses are a must or be competitive with the X2D IQ.
I also prefer the flat DNGs profile leica has.

The SL3 indeed has a couple of extra tricks up its sleeve and will only get better with firmware updates. I only had an ASPH version of the 35, the APO would’ve been even better indeed ✌🏻
Hi Bernd, cudos to you for making the video, also cudos to both Hasselblad and Leica for bringing such great cameras. A big advantage of the SL3 (or an SL2/SL2-S) is not only that you can exchange lenses with the M series, but also that you can program both cameras, SL and M, in such that the same functions are roughly on the same buttons. For the upcoming Tour Amical I will carry my SL2-S and my M10R at the same time and I can operate them equally without thinking about it. Cheers, and see you soon somewhere
The SL and M are indeed perfect companions and much of the design choices carry over from one model to the other. Have fun on your vintage car adventure! Looking forward to the images 💯

Both systems have some incredible latitude in post processing when it comes to dynamic range. I added a link to some downloadable files in the description ✌🏻
What was the video recorded on? The Leica SL3's colour was closer to the video than the X2D's very warm output.
The AWB of the Hasselblad and Leica were indeed very different in reading the situation. Video within the Aegidium was shot on a DJI Osmo pocket 3

Thank you for a very nice and unbiased review. I had an X1D11 for a long time the files were awesome, I loved it. I thought about the X2D and have tried it and my brother owns one. But rather like you I’m heavily invested in M/M42 and L Mount lenses, so The SL3 was a no brainier to replace the SL2-S I bought after the Hassie. it is not possible to get the amount of lens options available for the Leica for the Hassie system (without the compromises that come with converting full frame on a medium format sensor) and I am prepared to do a little more work in post with the excellent DNG files in the Leica, which work so much better and can be pushed further in LR PS and Capture one (if that’s your bag). Whilst the Hassie files are beautiful and no doubt the colour science is the best around, always had to pre- edit Hassie files in Phocus in order they would be more compliant in other post software. But no doubt the user experience is fantastic on both cameras, but I don’t need all the extra speed and presets etc of a Sony or a Fujifilm to crowd out the experience of taking a photo; and feeling like you have created it and not the tech in your hand. Either camera is a great choice if you have the budget.
Thanks for adding your perspective and experience with both systems. The point about the lenses is a great one, so many options to choose from within the Leica system itself, when you adapt M or R lenses to the native L ones. You can go from perfect/clinical to imperfect/character, while staying with the same brand ecosystem.
Great video, thanks! To my eye, I prefer the SL3. Hasselblad coloring is very nice, but looks a bit warm and oversaturated as a starting point. The SL3, to me, has beautiful saturation but better initial WB, which offers a better editing starting point. Much easier to add color and warmth to an SL3 image to mimic color rendering of the Hasselblad than the other way around. But really cannot go wrong with either.
Camera does not set white balance. You do
Great way to put it and indeed also part of my experience. The DNG files of the Leica can get very close during editing. And fully agree, no matter which system you prefer, it will give you amazing images 💯
I have the M11 Leica and love the camera however, I own the X2D for medium format and now understand why it is so wonderful after seeing the remarkable difference when compared to the SL3.

Thanks for this nice comparison! Both fantastic cameras, of course! Just one very small thing ... some photographers do like to change the diopter adjustment more often, not only once when they get the camera. I guess it comes with a certain age, often related to presbyopia. So I hope it doesn't happen to everyone. But I'm one of these folks! 5 years ago, I didn't have that! So the Hasselblad approach to diopter adjustment seems a hassle to me, actually.

Changing the diopter is pretty easy on the Hasselblad, I've never tried the SL3 but I can see it being a little annoying to have to hold the camera up to your eye and have to adjust a wheel like a loupe on your eye (but I could be wrong).
I use the lugs from the included Hasselblad strap to attach Peak Design anchors to my X2D.
That’s indeed the way to use them. An attachment to attach another attachment 😉
@@berndvandecruys It’s really no different than using the included strap, and the quick release lugs have been the way to attach Hasselblad straps forever. It’s the original quick release strap system. My 503cx uses the same system, so if you use the Hasselblad straps, you can quickly use between both a camera that is up to 70years old, and a modern one. It’s not a valid concern.
Great video, the first one I could see comparing both models. Comes on a timely manner for me as I sold both my Nikon and Olympus system to move into one of these two. Trying both at the local store, the most critical difference I see in between both is one actually difficult to explain: a depth in color and texture that I can only find in the Hasselblad files, besides the overall color science that makes images to me even more wonderful than in real life. Would have been great maybe if you could have posted the side by side comparison pictures in original size for us to look at them more closely, as RUclips compression and screen size sample do not do these cameras’ justice.

Is it so that Capture One cannot be used with X2D native files?
Yes, unfortunately that’s the case. It will probably never be supported. Workaround is to create Tiff files in Phocus and then use those in C1

What about ISO and Dynamic Range performance? I have 2 Sl2s I use and I am a bit fed up with Leica. They are opening stores as if they are Louis Vuitton in major cities all over world and not you cant even buy anything. Need a lens? Wait a year... Need an SL3... wait a year and a half. I am thinking of changing system and liked the Hassleblad but worried that is is not as good as I am used to with Leica SL2.

Depends a bit where you are located, because in Europe the Hasselblad system also suffers from supply shortages from time to time, especially the newer lenses. When it comes to Dynamic range, you will be very pleased by the results of the X2D, it's great. ISO I have not really tested, but the SL system has faster glass (especially when you consider the full L mount alliance lens line-up), so it allows you to keep the ISO lower for longer. But the X2D will not disappoint you when coming from an SL2. I have added a couple of sample raw files in the description, feel free to explore them as well.
The central shutter has different noise levels on each lens. The 2.5/38V has a pretty silent one.
Thanks for sharing that insight about the leaf shutters. The one in the 38 and 55 that I used are barely noticeable.
@@berndvandecruys Yep, exactly. The 2.5/90V is like a machine gun in comparison. To be honest, that's a little bit exaggerated, but if you're used to the sound of the 38 and 55 you will anticipate that like so. The 2.8/65 is also not so silent; however that 65 is a brilliant lens in all other aspects and delivers excellent sun stars.
This is why I purchased a Used H1X annivarsay edition, Perfect for my Shooting Landscapes that are as glorious as your imagination, Dynamic Range is UNRIVALED!

along with Nikon SB-900 flash; does this x2d camera supports Nikon’s F mount lenses or not.? I’m planning to shift from Nikon to this beast so research is mandatory
With an adapter it should work. But keep in mind that full frame lenses either don’t cover the full medium format sensor or they have strong vignetting. Also, the Hasselblad lenses are leaf shutter. So F mount lenses only work with electronic shutter on the X2D, so serious risk of rolling shutter wobbliness. If you would go for the X2D go for the new native lenses as well ✌🏻

Nice comparison of two of the most gorgeous camera on the market today. The only reason I’m not getting into Hasselblad is because they are not supported CaptureOne. This is a deal breaker unfortunately.
If they ever can get to an agreement with CaptureOne, that could be a nice sales boost for Hasselblad imo.
Great review! If only the X2D focussed a bit faster ... I love the colour science and gives you such a great starting point for the dit. I photograph lifestyle/people and whilst I can imagine it would be brilliant for environmental portraits as soon as I started doing more lifestyle based stuff where people move faster, it might fall down. Love the leaf shutter too, makes such a difference when shooting with off camera lighting. The SL3 is good too, I've tested it but ultimately you're paying for the lenses and lack of fringing etc. There other systems producing as good raw files as the Leica (I've tested all sorts) but the experience isn't perhaps as tactile/immersive etc. Also love the Leica community. Also if you're shooting professionally you have to have a backup body + lenses = £££ :)

Ultimately both cameras use Zeiss lenses with Schott glass.

Wow, I didn't expect the difference in colors to be so pronounced! It seems like the Hasselblad colors are generally a bit warmer, is it just a different white balance choice on their part or is there more to it? Does it work in all lighting? Did you find the Hasselblad colors to also be more true to life?
I see you passed by your old workplace as well! Love the light at 10:41 and the framing at 10:44. How did you get to 10:52, though? Did you walk off the platform?
I used AWB and that is mostly the reason why the Leica files tend to be cooler in the comparison. Totally possible to align them in post. But the Hasselblad does have a way with colours. It felt spot on in a lot of circumstances, very true to life indeed. One day I will ask one of the Hasselblad engineers to explain the 🪄, not sure if I’ll get an answer 😉.
Indeed, small walk from Central to Brussels North station during golden hour 😇. The shot at 10:52 is walking all the way to the end of the platform, totally within the rules 😁

Depends on the type of photography you (want to) do, the lenses or cameras you already have, ... but rest assured, both of them are great choices :-)
Thank you for the comparison. I felt the image comparisons were very compelling, preferring the Hasselblad images for the most part. I own an X2D and love it for portrait work. However, I was a Nikon user for years shooting documentary work and need to replace my Nikon D750. I’m concerned the Hasselblad auto focus isn’t fast enough, and wonder if the SL3 would fill in that gap. As @alexandrosflower mentions, the SL3 gives him more versatility than the Hasselblad. In the image with all the chairs in a row, I preferred the coolness of the SL3. I don’t gravitate towards warm tones in the first place but I felt the Hasselblad got it right in raw out of camera more than the SL3. Nothing that can’t be fixed in post as mentioned. For me it’s about the accuracy of the autofocus. @alexandrosflower do you have any comments about the SL3 vs X2D auto focus?
Technology wise, it should be fast enough. If not yet, a firmware update will only bring more improvements

@@berndvandecruys Well, I’m considering a second camera as my Nikon D750 is discontinued but mostly it’s a beast to carry around. I was considering the Leica SL3, and it has an additional vertical hand grip. However, I feel that their image results are vastly different so wondering about that. I have been a Nikon user for so long and though loyal, the image quality just doesn’t compare. It’s such a big investment.

Choosing the Blad is easy, for me at least. I’m shooting on a Leica M11P so absolutely no bias at all. Yea my choice issue is around “which” Hasselblad. I’m picking one up in the next couple of weeks and leaning toward the new 907X.
I have not yet had the opportunity to take a closer look at the 907X, but it does intrigue me a lot from a UX point of view.
The 907X are too expensive compared to the X2D which have both EVF and IBIS !
@@cameraprepper7938 with 100 megapixels, not having IBIS does limit the practical use of the 907x in a lot of cases when shutter speed becomes slow. Still keen on trying that camera out 😇
@@berndvandecruys It would be nice if you could buy only the back for the analog old Hasselblad Cameras to a (much) lower price than the full set.
I'm also a M and X2D shooter. For me, it's the cost of ownership. For example, the 35 APO is 9,000.00 dollars, more money than the camera body. But the size of M lenses you can not beat.
The 35 M APO is indeed a very pricey gem of a lens. The quality in such a small form factor is just incredible optical engineering. The M system’s size-quality combo is what keeps me coming back to it
Very nice both cameras, but for the price I go for the Fujifilm X100II, I believe is the same Sony sensor.
Hard to argue against the value for money with the Fuji. But to me, the Leica or the Hasselblad are just way nicer when it comes to design and being inspiring as a camera. It’s just awesome there are so many great options at the moment 💯✌🏻
How does a camera 'nail white balance'. Surely that is a judgement call determined by the photographer ?
It nails WB, in the sense that it feels ‘right’ a lot of the times, straight out of camera. Skin tones are pleasing, and there is a balance, where the pictures don’t feel too warm or cold, even in mixed light. It’s a great starting or end point, because you’re right, the photographer can take it into other creative directions if he chooses to do so.

The new 38 and 55 from Hasselblad and the 35 ASPH from Leica. In retrospect the APO version would’ve been ideal 😊
It seems hasselblad makes pictures warmer than sl3.
Based on my sample set, I also noticed the AWB leaning towards the warmer tones in the Hasselblad

Leica does not have focus bracketing but Hassselblad does, so if one wants to do macro or close up/product photography the choice is obvious

the Hasselblad needs the latest focus system of Sony. auto purchase if they had done this. now Sony has a new medium format sensor. too bad Hasselblad. if Sony does a medium format....oh boy
full frame AF performance on a medium format sensor is indeed the next frontier. I am curious if Sony is going to enter the medium format digital world with their own camera or if they will just stick to selling those new sensors to other brands.

Which differences stand out to you the most?
@@berndvandecruys Hi there - the sensor, Hass is MF. Tthe lenses, Hass has leaf shutter, good for sync at all speeds, the body Hass is not weather sealed at all. Leica has grip option and 4 zoom lenses to choose from - Hass has only new 2.5mm across the new range except for the 28p which is F4. The colours, Hass has HNCS - very lifelike - Leica focuses on Red, (good for B+W, and has a soft but sharp look The Leica has dedicated flash from Leica , the Hass relies on Nikon, - The LEica uses the same sensor and battery in the Q3 (which dies have a leag shutter) in fact the only thing the two cameras have in common is the battery compartment and the waiting lists - all good my friend. Pro here - Take care
I have a B/W question for you for the Leicas. Do you think a monochrome only sensor is worth it or do you prefer conversion from a colour one, so you can tweak with the colour channels ?
@@berndvandecruys Having ,(and I say 'only' in terms of I feel very fortunate to have had them both),- had the Q2 Mono and the Q3 colour I can't say for sure - but the Q2 Mono far outweighs the Q3 with its B+W selection in camera turned on - probably due to there being so much less in the filter array!!! Would I buy A Q3 mono though.... not sure. As a Pro I have a bunch of cameras in my arsenal for commercial, studio, social portraits and fashion mostly on location so have cameras which suit that need including two X2D's, one 907XCFV100c, all with the new 2.5mm lenses a Fuji GFX100II, a Fuji GFX50r, an SL3, a Q3, an M8 which used to belong to Audrey Tautou - yes her, and the one she used in the Chanel No 5 film given to her by Jean Pierre Jeunet and which she used for her own personal use for some time, a bunch of Instax printers and Instax cameras for proofing, and a whole big bunch of Fujifilm GX680's - and a couple of GWS690's - I do print a lot of B+W - but its better in my honest opinion to do as you say and adjust the colour channels for contrast in post- but I do feel that if you shot primarily B+W then a dedicated B+W camera - akin to a dedicated B+W film is going to produce more pleasing results in tonality and depth, not to mention sheer cracking clarity. Hope that helps.
Both cameras have sensors made by Sony, the X2D is a bit expensive, the SL3 is much too expensive !
Thankfully a camera is more than a sensor. The way it handles and operates, the lens selection, the design, value retention, … are all factors to take into consideration when choosing one. ✌🏻

Depends on the criteria you use, but indeed it’s not for everyone.

Are you ok? Go for a walk, see a friend, do something fun. You’ll feel better and everything will be ok.
Sony and Fujifilm make great workhorse cameras, but as you put it they don’t look or feel extraordinary imo
