    Many of you have commented on the focus position selection. In this video review I demonstrated using the rear screen to select the focus point, which you can also do while looking through the viewfinder. However this isn't the only way to select the focus point, there is a button at the front of the camera that if you hold it allows you to activate the selector and then use the control wheels to move the focus point. My favourite way though is to go into the custom button function and change the back control wheel (which has a press function) and make that the AF selector button and then continue with the control wheels to move it to position. This seems the quickest way so far until hopefully we see AF face tracking arrive.

    • @nth_to_see_here
      @nth_to_see_here 2 года назад +1

      So in short - you hold the selector. Then you move the wheels, front wheel for left/right, rear wheel for up down. No diagonal of course. And you scroll...two up...three right...now wait...one down...one right. Seems like the fastest way to focus is like using a 1980s Atari :)

    • @VisualEducationStudio
      @VisualEducationStudio  2 года назад +3

      @@nth_to_see_here No not quite. You press the back wheel once (that activates the AF selection point) you then roll front and/or back wheel to select where you want the AF point to go. Or you use your left hand and finger and slide it around on the flip screen and drag the AF point where you want it. As mentioned in the video I expect the face/eye tracking feature to be added in a future firmware update, it has been working in prototypes but not yet to a standard they are happy with, when they are happy with it they will add it to the camera via a firmware update. From my point of view I'm glad the camera is released now though as you still have access to a camera that delivers exceptional images.

      @Karl Taylor Don't get me wrong. I am convinced it's a superb camera. A huge upgrade from the X1D and also quite an upgrade from the GFX100s. Unfortunately for many who don't do portraiture or studio, like me e.g. do street (don't care for eye/face tracking and also need to focus quickly and precisely) any focus solutions without a joystick/dpad will be slower. Will test, but pretty sure this is the main reason I'd stay with my GFX100s.
      Of course, one can argue that the X2D is not meant for street. But as I remember, Hasselblads main selling point for the X1D was something along the lines of - finally medium format light and compact enough to take it anywhere with you :)

      @@nth_to_see_here after having the X2D for about a week now, I can already feel that it’s autofocus even with the older 45p hunts no more than my gf45 on my 100s. I was very curious about this myself. Then again, I don’t tend to rely heavily on autofocus even with my zippy gf110 but interesting no less. The touch screen focus works very well. The wheel focus option sounds strange but in use, it’s not worse than my experience with the super sensitive knob on my gfx100s.

    On the idea of adding video to these cameras, I personally really appreciate that Hasselblad focus on photos.
    I don't have any desire for shooting videos and wish more manufacturers would make cameras just for still photography in the hope that they'd be able to offer them for lower cost by removing video features.

      As someone who does both, I agree. There are plenty of dedicated cinema/video cameras. It's so nice to use a dedicated tool, created by a specialist company - I don't want RED, BMD or Arri to start adding photography features.

      With digital cameras and especially mirrorless....there really is nothing other than a bit of software to add video. You're not really saving any perceptible money not having video, nor are you hindering any stills performance by having video too.
      And at these prices, people expect it.

    What a great in-depth video. Thank you! I was skeptical about the performance considering the smaller size sensor, but I am happily surprised to see that it actually outperforms the larger sensor with the right glass. I am sure we wouldn't have seen that with the older glass. Another nice surprise was the high ISO performance, I was expecting more noise from 100 megapixels being crammed into a smaller sensor. This finally looks like a great product from Hasselblad that is much more affordable for those who want to dip their toes in the system.

    This is a great overview. RE exposure simulation: It's also helpful if mixing flash and ambient light. I've mostly been shooting with Canon's mirrorless system as of late and when shooting outdoors with flash, it's really handy to put your flash in ttl mode, turn on exposure simulation and dial the ambient exposure down to taste (or whatever is desired really), then just take the shot and let the flash ttl normalize the exposure. Canon's ttl system will generally prioritize correctly exposing skin tones and faces/eyes (if you have face/eye detect AF on). It's super handy to very quickly get to an exposure that you can then finesse, and time is money, so that's a plus. I hope they hurry up with the face/eye detect AF, that was a real game changer for me Canon added it to their cameras.

    As being one of the "industry's top photographers" 🤔 why wouldn't you have addressed camera tethering and the X2D's compatibility with an editing software suite? Is it compatible with Capture One Pro the industry standard for the "industry's top photographers" or is its compatibility only with Hassy's software?? I'm thinking the latter. That's a very important detail you left out!

    • @VisualEducationStudio

      There were 3 videos in this review series of the X2D. One of them demonstrates the tethering that can only be done using Phocus software which is the software that comes with any Hasselblad camera. All Hasselblad camera's only tether into Phocus as they always have, they have never been able to tether into Capture One as Phase won't provide the ability to let Hasselblad RAW files work in Capture One.

    Nice camera.
    I can live without video and eye focus, etc.
    A personal feedback, though (in case Hasselblad team reads it 😊):
    1- Vertical grip
    2- Lack of a finger-joystick to move the focus point while shooting, looking through the viewfinder.
    And, two questions:
    1- Does the True-Focus exist somehow, as optional or integrated?
    2- Does the AF work when using H lenses on the X2D?

    • @VisualEducationStudio

      Good first two points. second question: no and I don't know as didn't test one but I'm sure Hasselblad will tell you. My guess is very likely on the H convertor but not sure on the H adaptor.

Why don't give the possibility to swivel the lcd to use in portrait format ( it's something that was available before, the sony 7c has also this), and revive the Hasseblad shooting experience. Because this was always one of the special things of hasselblad that you look from the top which gives another perspective plus the possibility to dialogue with the subject. And lets be honest, most of the portraits are taken in portrait format or 1x1.

    I don't see medium format photography as a niche where upgrade/ update cycles are short enough to where adding an internal storage failure point is a good idea. Even if they used the highest-endurance NAND on the market today, we're looking at 7-10 years before that internal SSD is dead. Have they adressed this? Is it modular? If it's heavily integrated/ soldered on the mainboard we are in trouble.

    • @VisualEducationStudio

      I'd imagine its switchable but I'm not 100% sure on this but very good question. Although I wouldn't expect to be using any of my cameras after 7-10 years. Also you don't have to use the SSD you can use the memory card if you prefer.

      7 - 10 years between upgrades to short? keep in mind thats constant read write in a server. this camera isnt taking 30 photos a second. by the time that ssd is dead what you expect from a camera will be completely different. it took 6 years from the launch of the x1d to make a camera suitable for every day use. in 10 years medium format sensors will read faster than todays sport cameras and not use shutters and will backup seamlessly to your workspace that automatically sorts and labels everything. if you can afford 1 now you can probably afford 1 in ten years - just get a new 1. the bigger issue for workflow is repairs... no 1 wants to wait 8 months for something to get fixed

      This was my first though as well. To me the medium format photography is completely priced out of my reach, but I do enjoy using old used medium format equipment from time to time.
      I love the mirrorless Hasselblads, and I'm hoping after a couple of generations the used prices would be low enough for me to grab a used one. However, realistically that'll be 5 - 15 years from now for the first generation of xd:s or 907x. While I'm convinced the body, electronics and even the leaf shutters in the lenses will easily be in perfect condition and not even in the halfway of their life span even after 15 years from now, I really don't see an SSD working for multiple decades. I hope I'm wrong though.

      @@seanbirtwistle649 I'd expect most of photography to be dead within 10 years due to the AI revolution. Extrapolating from current development, it won't take long before AI can conjure up better images than any imaging equipment possible from a very rudimentary picture inputs or even just from text prompts.
      What won't die, however, is the enjoyment of the process of photography. For that purpose the global shutters and instant read speeds are not the key question, but the longevity of the equipment, as well as ergonomics and usability are the key.

    Thanks Karl for this video, i was waiting for a proper review since my unit hasn't arrived yet.. ( hopefully soon! ) Whats your feeling about the leaf shutter sync.. every day is more and more difficult if not impossible to find flashes with T0,1 times short enough to actually make the most out of it.. even finding triggers ( still using the old profoto as they are the fastest i tested ). I mean it was difficult enough to get flashes that had fast full power times back when we used phase one cameras with 1600th of a second sync, but at 4000? i don't think there is any flash or trigger that can cope with that.. at least not at full power. Of course it's still MUCH better than HSS or Hyper Sync but i fear the flash industry forgot about us leaf shutters with all the flashes coming at 1/320 speeds at full power nowadays in the best case.

      Hi Kube, thank you. Yes that's a very good point: on my H6 I get a cut of point of about 1/750th when strange things start happening to my flash on full power because the duration of the flash at high power is often around 1/1000th on my broncolor lights, and then if the sync isn't exact you may loose half a stop or more. At lower powers I haven't noticed it. Sometimes I've just added more lights to compensate and then managed to get away with even higher sync speeds. Who knows what light manufacturers will do going forwards.

    Great review Karl. Have you looked at and tested the 907x with the same sensor? The only item missing is the image stabilization system. Do you use stabilization or do you shoot at high enough speeds and flash so that it is not required?

      Hi thank you, no I'm afraid I've not seen one of those cameras in person. I don't use the stabilization unless outdoors with natural light but 90% of my work is in the studio with the camera on a fixed platform.

    Great review. Everything a photographer needs seems to be in that camera. I tried the GFX system and didn’t really like the tethering experience. Perhaps this has improved with their flagship 100mp. But their menu system is awful compared to Hasselblad. I bought the Leica S system. Because I can use it with Capture One. Also because I managed to buy a body half price brand new. I don’t need 100mp. So I don’t actually want all that data. 33mp is fine for my prints. It helps with my workflow. Very impressed with the internal drive and charging while tethered. My Leica can’t do that. I don’t have stabilization but I’m shooting everything at 1/1000th anyway in the studio. I think it comes down to the glass. I’m really happy with the Leica S system lenses. The best I’ve ever used. Also managed to buy them really inexpensively during Covid. It’s funny that when you get settled with a camera it would take a lot to change systems. Thanks for this video, I really enjoyed watching it. Such a professional review. My only comment is that leaf shutter lenses tend to require servicing more often. Every 10,000 frames perhaps. So if you are a busy photographer that might be something to take into consideration. Just depends how robust the lenses are. I have leaf shutter lenses with the Leica system. I’m just wondering how long it will be before they need servicing. Going strong so far.

    What's about focus stacking? It's awesome feature in gfx 100s. I'm always using it with 120mm macro for product shots (without movement, of course).
    BTW, I have many questions to x2d. Camera looks not finished. It has 2 microphones in front and 1 speaker on back side (top left corner).
    I think they have no time to test the video functionality. Hasselblad has a very tiny test audience compared to FUJI with crop community.
    *Corrected*: my bad, I didn't see the same design on x1d. I think they just have no power to include video features to this product. It's not bad.
    Autofocus control by finger only? It's not about ergonomics.
    This is camera not for a new Hasselblad users. It comes to change your old x1d camera, because you stack in the system.

    The X1D was my favourite camera, save for its numerous shortcomings. The X2D is unquestionably my favourite camera to date. I much prefer the XxD system designs to Fuji GFX-series and anything Hasselblad with digital backs. The Phase One is intriguing, too, but I'd settle for the X2D given an opportunity for price and its superior ergonomics and practicality (plus, it's a beauty of a body!).
    N.B.: One thing, though: it's a great shame it doesn't shoot video. So is the omission of an articulating screen a bit of a bummer. And 5+ fps for stills would do it good as well: no question 5-10fps in 100MP resolution is doable today.

    It is surprising that diffraction starts somewhere between f/11 and f/16. 100 megapixels are 60 megapixels, if you crop it to full frame. A 60 megapixel full frame camera already shows diffraction somewhere around f/5.6.

      You have to factor in magnification and its bearing on DOF, the larger physical sensor size dictates a different focal length too. There are many variables but the larger sensor delivers more tonal range as light is spread over a wider area.

    Hi Karl, quick question about The X2D and phocus software - can you control the focus with the software for stacking?

  • @andyvan5692
    @andyvan5692 2 года назад

    Karl, there is still one major advantage of the H6 and the H system in general, it has the tilt/shift adaptor, and also for the other H system lineup an option for film shooting , the X2D is digital only, and without any tilt adaptors, you would have to go to an ARC or Flexbody, with the 907x 50C sensor added to them!, so not 100MP, the ONLY other solution out today is the Cambo Actis system (to mount the X2D onto) so it is a very hard thing to decide.

    • @VisualEducationStudio
      @VisualEducationStudio  2 года назад

      Hi Andy and yes that is something that they are going to have to address with either dedicated Tilt Shift lenses or an adaptor.

    This was a good video that really gave allot of good information. I have been shooting with a Sony A7R lll with 42mp for a few years now. and never really ever considered MF cameras because I didn't think the trade off of focusing ability for the slight better image quality made sense for me. but recently I saw a video by Manny Ortiz with the X2D with the face detect firmware update and the new 90V lens. and after watching that video I can't stop thinking about this camera system. the image quality and the colors are really special. which you can also see in this video. but it's a really big investment to switch systems for someone like me who is not a working photographer. so I still haven't decided weather or not I am going to dive in. but it's a really nice camera. and with the new face detect autofocus along with the IBIS I think it's totally usable for glamour or beauty type of shoots which is what I am into. and I also just love the look of the camera.

    Excellent review Karl! For some time now I have been debating on what I should do with my H5D? I have multiple camera systems from Fuji, Sony, Canon etc. I really started liking the Fuji system, so I got the the Fuji X-H1 as my first Fuji mirrorless camera. And I must say I really love the camera, so I started thinking about selling my H5D for the GFX 100. But as amazing as the GFX is, I just can't seem to sell my H5D for it :) first off I paid over $20K for it when I got it years ago and 2nd getting $20-$30K camera is not easy to do lol. So I was going to add the Fuji GFX to my collection but after seeing this demo I think I will go for the X2D 100. And buy the way it was you that convinced me to get the H5D back in the day LOL. I am on the fence like you, do I sell my H5D and get the X2D or keep it and just add the X2D? I think I will keep the H5D :) The camera is very dear to me, its my first high end medium format camera. My first Hasselblad, great studio camera and clients as still impressed by it. I wanted a true medium format camera for street photography and been thinking for years on what I could buy that will give me medium format output without the weight of a medium format camera for street, I think the X2D my fit the bill.
