@@pendzelnawungiel medium format film camera? Which one? With interchange lenses? Also we can plus +7-10% of film rolls qty, cause of wrong metering, and other mistakes
I agree with your sentiments on this camera. After using around 20 different cameras over the last 40 years, I finally purchased an X2D, and after 6 months, I love it more than ever. Paired with the XCD 35-75 and a brace of R-Mount Leica and M-Mount Voigtlander lenses, this kit might keep me satisfied for the next 10+ years! Its colour and resolving power are next level. Love the shack+windy track shot at 12:05 and the clever composition at 16:08! Love the LS400, too. Thanks for sparing us the splanter-paint image.
“At this point I was wondering if I was somehow getting lucky with these shots, or if it was somehow the camera” is a fantastic point. Film or digital, all that matters is that it gets you out shooting. Some equipment can inspire, some can bore. I know personally I took more awesome photos in the first 6 months of switching to Fuji than I took over the previous 4 years of not taking out my canon because it didn’t inspire. Like always Jason 11/10 goodest photos I guess.
A lot of gear focused RUclips content feels so forced, often with pretty mediocre photos that fail to display much creativity or the gear's capabilities. What I always appreciate is that Jason sticks to his process, the camera kind of feels secondary for the most part, the ability to adapt to different tools shouldn't be underestimated. Oh yeah and some of those shots were above average, you might have a future in this biz!
In my personal (albeit uneducated) opinion, I think these are some of the best shots you've gotten. Regardless of film or digital, the compositions are on point.
12:46 Appriciate the nails matching the shutter button. The X2D is a fantastic photo camera. Has everything you need and nothing more. Btw: The relatively tiny 28mm makes it a very compact system. I don't like how enormous the 25mm is, personally.
I bought the original X1D a couple of months ago. I used medium format film previously, slow work. This Hasselblad is like a film camera in many ways. I really like it. The images are really good.
I absolutely love this camera. Was so excited to see you make a video with it! I was a bit nervous to see what you thought of it since… well, digital. But I’m glad you seem to really appreciate it, too.
As soon as I saw "Davenport" I knew you'd be at those shacks right off the highway. Very grainydays. And kudos for resisting the urge to photograph Shark's Fin (or Shark's Tooth) cove just down the road. Every hack, including me, has taken too many photos of that. PS - I sold all my digital equipment to get the X2D. I do not regret it.
Very enjoyable. I've been shooting a GFX 100II for almost a year and have been very pleased. That's not to say I don't admire those that choose to stick to film. I've gone out with a friend that owns an X2d a few times and we swapped cameras back and forth. We both agree that you just can't go wrong with either option. For me, the Fuji wins based on cost alone but I also always use the Tilt Viewfinder attachment which brings more ergonomic comforts. (big nose club)
On my tiny phone screen, the digital shots look pretty good. Definitely crisper than film, which makes sense because modern optics. Though that's not everything when it comes to photography
Great great great episode jason ! one of my favorite photography wise, you got some asbsoluterly incredible shots imo, right up my alley keep doing what you do !
Yes come to the dark side! I really like your color grading! If you want a slightly more affordable and lower resolution alternative , the GFX 50S II is pretty good. Has IBIS too.
Some of the new lenses sound absolutely beautiful. The first generation had something very metallic to it, at least the lenses I tried. But yeah, the 28, 25, 38, 55 all whisper seductively, the 90 2.5 is a bit louder but not much.
Finally this awesome photography instrument is in the hands of someone who knows how to make pictures not just taking them. The best video I’ve seen so far about the X2D which I don’t own myself but looking forward to make the switch hopefully soon. I’m a Leica shooter and have heard lots of talk about the Leica look which to my eyes and experience do exist better to say, used to exist with the Kodak sensor generation of Leicas not the new ones. With Hasselblad it’s a different story, I can now pick a hasselblad shot without looking to the exit data and I guess right 90 % of the time.
Awesome Jason, the jokes, the constant show off of average american motel rooms. It's pure joy to watch. Even if this digital video was on the spicy side for you being so analog normally😂
I've owned a Hasselblad X1DII, by far these cameras are made for art (no limits). With these camera's there is no need to talk about technical details because the way they're engineered is more film like than a conventional digital camera. From the color calibration, to the lenses and the design are made in a symbiotic way.
This camera is over my budget, defently. The quality is incredible. You are a good photographer and you are able to shoot good pictures with every single camera or system .
I feel this same way about the GFX 50R. With a really simple menu system, actual dials and not a lot of video stuff it gives me a lot more similar feeling to shooting with my Pentax 67. Shooting a manual focus lens, also seems to keep me focused on thinking about the image, and composition instead of just rapid firing.
End of the day, if you're taking pictures and enjoying it, that's all that matters. I had to switch back to digital, at least for now, but now I can go out and shoot whenever I want. For me from buying the roll to getting the scans back, I'm already 40 quid deep. My cameras are sitting pretty for now, my A6600 and a prime lens are all I need to make some lovely images :)
that dolly in at 4:48 was supreme. I also found the 16:9 video frame a nice change to your usual format. the motel frames 13 minutes in look almost like something out of Wim Wenders' Paris Texas. this was a fun video to watch. great work!
Yet again Jason tempts me to add more to my collection, this Hassel is pretty cool! Looking forward to Jason buying the golden one, we know it’s coming.
Hi Baxter.. Also Just tried out the x1dii and really enjoyed it! Not shocked about the outcomes here. Also, Peter Mckinnon send this man a new filter system. A Baxter + Toilet shot, mint! k bye
Great video, the photos are simply stunning! In the “The Motel” section you talked about having a heavy warmth filter. Does it make sense on a film camera? What are the pros?
Film guy here with a business need for digital. I don’t really need to prove myself film worthy, but (6) Leicas, (2) Rollei’s, Linhof, several Canons, a couple Intrepids, blah blah. THIS Hasselblad is just…YES. Please, yes.
Welcome to the club Jason, My X2D and M11 have been waiting oh so patiently for you (to be clear its a BYOB club because we have no more money for food and drinks) :P
i love how the gateway drug to digital for “film shooters” is medium format. even though it’s not much bigger than full frame, and really doesn’t make much or any difference for 99.9% of use cases.
Shhhh... Don't let the secret out! But yeah, full frame and compact sharp prime lens is already a killer combo. I just wish there were more f2-2.8 primes.
In the end, it’s all encompassed in one huge, diverse mansion: still photography. Be it wet plate process, tintype, platinum prints, roll/sheet film, digital… The process matters to the photographer, just as writers have their tools they prefer. And just like authors, in the end, the reader/viewer doesn’t really care - they only care about what’s in front of them. And if you went full-on digital, I’d still subscribe to your channel. Where else am I going to see Baxter? And get lines about a guano covered rock like “Did the bird sh!t its pants? And then explode?!” Good review, some good photos, and nice trip up the CA coast. 👍🏼

Great shots Jason, I'd love you to try the Sigma SD Quattro Foveon sensor series cameras. The only image sensor that captures full RGB at every pixel location. Very film like and less than half the price of a digital medium format camera.
Its a beautiful camera. Versatile, expensive and beautiful. If you decide to buy one, go with their newer V lens, focus by wire on their older X mount lenses will frustrate you should you focus manually.

Except for the fact that Hasselblad doesn’t have a macro lens yet for the X system. You can use an H lens with an adapter though
