I actually think Miguel not fighting was the most in character decision he could make with how everything had gone. We already had him wanting to have prom with Sam without having it be about karate and the dojos just for that to get ruined on him. To me it was a sign that while he wasn't done with karate he was getting sick of the dojo drama. Couple that with what Robby said to him at prom and what Johnny said while drunk and it's easy to see why his desire at that moment would of been crushed. Miguel this entire show has been looking for a father, be in Johnny, or Daniel in this season, he is looking for someone to fill that void. After the dojo's split and what happened with Johnny it's rather in character imo that he would decide going to find his real father was more important that the tournament.
The entire season for him wasn't one of trying to get the dojo's to work it was one is discovering that neither Daniel or Johnny can fill the void his father left and about his need for closure in that part of his life. It makes sense that he has finally hit his breaking point where he has to abandon everything else to get it.

Johnny telling him "I love you too Robby" was what eventually pushed him over the edge to leave and find his father. During the all-valley he's not his regular self or as focused as he usually is not because of the blow-up with Sam at prom but because in the back of his mind he is conflicted on whether he should stay with all of his friends and family or leave to Mexico. It'll be good for him and Johnny to spend some time apart as he also won't have that distraction anymore from trying to create a better relationship with Robby.

They took out too much of the weight from Miguel’s story. I was very disappointed to see him not interacting with his 2 best friends and he is the person who inspired them to stand up for themselves and learn karate in the first place, but they didn’t have almost any screen time together. As for Johnny, it was quite unfortunate because Billy and Xolo are very talented actors and could have done so much more with acting in response to one another.

Miguel choosing to walk away was the best possible decision for his character. He was risking his physical and mental health for a father-figure who was starting to treat him like a pawn instead of a son. And Miguel knew it. Couple that with the what happened with Johnny (mistaking him for Robby when drunk) and you can understand why seeking answers and facing his fears seemed like the wiser decision to him. Not only will it allow him to grow as a character outside of the world of karate but it will serve as a wake up call for Johnny who essentially IS a father to Miguel even without his relationship to Carmen. He’s just never verbally acknowledged it.

    • @EzraDair
      @EzraDair 2 года назад +18

I don’t think Johnny was treating him like a pawn. I totally disagree with that. Johnny was only caught in the heat of the competition but he actually cares so much about him he literally freaked out when he saw bim bond with Daniel. John still doesn’t know how to be the father figure for Miguel but he actually showed through the entire show how genuine his love for the kid

    • @roganjoshkrishna2950
      @roganjoshkrishna2950 2 года назад +28

@@EzraDair I never said that he didn’t care for him, he definitely did. I’d argue that he loved him as much as he did Robbie. That doesn’t change the fact that he treated him like a pawn in season 4. You could see the disappointment on Miguel’s face when he asked him ‘Is that what all this is about?’ in response to Johnny ranting about how they had to take down Cobra Kai. Loving someone and using them aren’t always mutually exclusive and Johnny realised his mistake when it transpired that Miguel had run away. Without meaning to, he’d repeated Kreese’s mistakes.

If they ever decide not to make any more seasons of Cobra Kai I would love to see them do sort of like another spin-off centered around Miguel and his father because you know his father doesn't know he exist and they basically don't have a relationship so I would love to see something like that and who would he end up with Samantha or Tory?

@@roganjoshkrishna2950 Well said bud. Johnny was being unfair to Miguel in season 4. He wanted Miguel to be ok with him dating the kids but he couldn't be ok with Miguel getting to know his 2nd sensei who is also his girlfriend's father, and before Miguel's match against Eli, he practically told Miguel to show no mercy to Eli all because he joined Daniel which is almost the opposite of what he told Miguel to do to Robby in the last All Valley. As for their talk in the medical room, I think Johnny was more obsessed with his rivalry with Daniel than taking down Cobra Kai (just a bit though) because if stopping Cobra Kai was his top priority then he wouldn't have had a problem with Miyagi Do winning instead of forcing Miguel to continue.
I like Johnny and Miguel's surrogate father-son bond, but like I said, Johnny was being unfair to Miguel in season 4, and it seems to me that he's doing it again in season 5 by trying to keep Miguel from his dad because of the things he did in the past yet he's blindly taking Robby at his word after he just helped the bad guys win. He's also trying to parent trapping Miguel with Robby which is rich from the guy who couldn't get along with his old rival for more than 2 seconds. I know Johnny and Daniel teamed up in the tournament but it was late in the game, and Miguel tried to convince Johnny to fix things with Daniel weeks before the tournament. If Johnny and Daniel had removed their heads from their backsides sooner then they would've won, or at least the dirty ref might've been exposed.

Miguel’s major challenge this season was ultimately figuring out himself and where he fit into all of this .He realized later into the season that he was not fighting for himself this time around as much as he was fighting for Daniel and Johnnys ridiculous rivalry. along with a lot of his other internal struggles; such as his strained relationship with Johnny, his financial future, future relationships, need to know where he came from, etc. all of this plays into his emotional struggle and it’s gets to the point where he’s just over the entire thing. hes more than a trophy. he’s more than some crazy rivalry. he wants to figure out what HE is fighting for. that shows maturity in him that he has always had. and I know he’s being set up for bigger things in the future. I can’t wait to see where he goes.

I actually really liked the ending. The students who succeeded in their matches were the ones who knew who they were and those who were allowed to compete in a way that they expressed themselves in their fighting. Eli realized that his mohawk did not define him on top of knowing Cobra Kai and Miyagi-do well, and Tory was given free reign to fight with honour and disregard Terry's coaching. Even Sam had her moment to not be bound by her father's strict adherence to style.
Meanwhile, Miguel knew tensions were high between the two positive male role models in his life, and Johnny asking him whose side he was on cemented the idea that he wasn't going to be expressing himself in his fight. He was expressing Johnny's will. I get why he might have thought forfeiting the match in lieu of searching for his own answers was the best call.

I feel like the point of the Daniel and Miguel scenes was really showing his desire for a father (and to know more about his actual biological dad). A lot of what happened with him this season was obvious set-up for S5 and the "seeking his biological dad" story arc, who will probably end up being a massive asshole that will show Johnny is a better man by contrast.

Miguel's storyline was very melancholy but, I wasn't disappointed with it. I completely understand why Miguel had to come off so depressed/ upset... because it was only a matter of time, when the series would actually full focus on Miguel and his mysterious father... I guess giving Miguel a "backseat and/ or melancholy storyline" was the best way to set up for it...?

I feel like he always wanted to prove himself in this tournament and the focus the whole time for Miguel was the win even with stuff on the side like the dojo issues and the prom with Sam, but these issues kind of started to pile up as there was the time Johnny saying I love you Robby, which even tho he was drunk, gave Miguel the idea that he cared more about his relationship with robby than Miguel which had broken him especially since Johnny was now an even bigger part of Miguel’s life with him knowing abt Carmen and Johnny and him not seeing Daniel a lot. It was these and the biggest issue which was Johnny caring more abt the dojo drama than having his champions best interests at heart and guiding him to prove himself and use his own style to do so which is what he did with Sam causing Daniel to see that he wasn’t all bad and they made up johnny might’ve recognized at this point he messed up w Miguel and he could save it w Sam. Anyway since Miguel knew Johnny and other role models (Daniel) cared more about dojo drama than Miguel proving himself and trying to end the drama in the process they tried to make him a pawn which he wasn’t falling for, he had enough of the dojo drama to the point that he didn’t even care abt ending it and he was furious with his role models for not keeping him in mind and making him a piece in the game which is what Sam would’ve been too if she wasn’t allowed to use her style in the end, Miguel wasn’t allowed to fight his way and he prolly felt like there was no point proving himself if win or lose the people that he wanted to prove himself too the most (Johnny, Daniel) didn’t even care. I think he felt he needed to find someone else at least for the time being so that’s why he set out for his father thinking he’ll find someone that will truly care abt him and not some stupid dojo or getting revenge on exes even tho him and Sam r cool, or displaying a certain style. He wanted to find his dad because he isn’t involved in this stuff

  • @Hamilton-Devereaux

    Dear WP,
I feel Miguel's arc in Season 4 was pretty huge and actually quite decent.
When Miguel decided not to fight in his semi final match, that was a big sign of maturity in his character. He realized that he didn't need to win, or even compete, as he's already done all of that.
The stuff you said about Miguel not having a champion's mentality could just be a sign that he's either matured, or just found himself in a state of confusion. He already won the previous year, then he recovered from a huge spinal injury and is able to walk again. So he's already winning. Why bother relying on a result at a karate tournament to fulfil his happiness, especially when there's other aspects of his life which are incomplete and unfulfilled? He has simply come to realize that he doesn't need to chase any more victories.
I think Miguel's story in season 4 was one of growth, maturity, and plenty of confusion along the way! - I think this relates to KK3, where Daniel is shown a different path and philosophy by learning cobra kai. This then leads him to much confusion about who he really is. As Miyagi says to him a few times in the film "much confusion inside of you". I think we see this for both Miguel and Sam in S4, having both been shown a different path and philosophy to what they were used to. They are both confused as they choose which way they grow, just like the bonsai tree. This is why Miguel has decided to go and find his father, exploring his own roots in order to find his true self. There were lots of things pointing towards Miguel wanting to find his father throughout the season. Like when Miguel overhears his Grandmother likening him to his father during the pre-prom photos, to his relationship with Johnny and even Daniel. - Side note: It was interesting when Miguel got injured during his semi final match vs Eli. Just before the episode ends he yells the word 'SENSEI', despite Johnny being right next to him. Although it's likely he just didn't realize Johnny was right there, it's also possible that he didn't even know himself who he was actually calling out for? Whether he was calling out for Johnny, Daniel, or even his father?
I think Miguel going off to find his father is more about him going on a journey to find himself.

Miguel had a lot of character growth this season that is gonna continue on into next season. Some people are acting weird about his arc just bc he wasn’t getting into fights the entire season and actually had some real development going on. like did people not understand his arc and how he was struggling mentally the entire season?
    • struggling with thinking about his financial future and his relationship with Sam.
    • understanding that he, and most of the other kids are being used to fight only for the adults’ silly feud. he felt like he was not fighting for himself any more and felt like he had nothing to gain from it.
    • feeling the overall pressure to maintain his title for all the wrong reasons. he new he was the one to beat.
    • his and johnnys strained relationship, causing him to not feel the need to fight his battles for him anymore.
    • his determination to figure out himself and find out what he really wants to do.
his arc this season was really interesting . my man’s heart was not in this competition and for very valid reasons. he’s gonna be the big winner by the end of the series. I can feel it. they’re setting him and Robby up long term. I also feel Tory and Robby are gonna go through similar arcs next season where they’re over the whole karate feud and realize they’re more than a trophy.
This season gave him a lot of clarity and he grows as a character as he realized everyone was fighting for stupid rivalry and revenge and to prove something. He backs off because he is not afraid to take a step back. He chose his heart and a peace of mind rather than chasing a trophy. He’s still undefeated. El Serpiente, everyone will be waiting for you next season.

I 💯 agree. I don’t t know what the writers were thinking. Miguel is the karate kid. He is the heart of the story. It was uncharacteristic behavior to have him decide not to fight. This series is about fathers and sons. Miguel finally found one in Johnny; then Robby comes back (too easily; didn’t feel earned) and Miguel loses his father-figure. Robby didn’t have a father either, he first found one in Daniel, then lost him, and gained Johnny, the reverse of Miguel. But Miguel didn’t really gain Daniel in the same way that Robby did, why? Because of this father in Mexico City business? My hope is that he’s a bad guy, and tries to hurt him, and both Johnny and Robby come to his rescue, thus cementing their relationship. It would be tough forJohnny and Carmen to continue developing their commitment with the two boys/rivals if something momentous didn’t happen. Finishing this series with Johnny having gained two sons would make my heart happy. Johnny hasn’t earned it, but that might come. Above all, I would like to see Daniel and Johnny become best friends, maybe even open a dojo together. They are Yin and Yang. Further, I believe that one day Anthony will become Daniel’s successor.

Him not fighting seemed to make sense though of his arc is so far. Doesn't make him weak of not continuing the fight, but his mindset is different than before. He doesn't see the trophy as much of a big deal anymore or the Karate tournament as a way to make Johnny proud again. He knows Johnny will always be proud of him, but I think Miguel wants something more in whatever that is. Yes, he found a father figure in Johnny and in Daniel as well. But the show has yet to explore the biological father aspect for Miguel. Hence the fathers and sons themes and possible another exploration of these themes, but in a different way.

I agree if anything it might’ve made more sense to have Miguel come back to the fight and end up losing to Hawk because of his injury, and that loss is what pushes him to see his real father as he feels defeated. But then again I think the writers wanted a way to get Miguel out of the tournament without him just “losing” because if Miguel wins the all valley it’s just repetitive and predictable even if it does make sense as Miguel is clearly the best fighter there imo.

I also think that Miguel choosing to not go out there and fight with the reasons that he gave Sam proves that he doesn't have to fight and that he has proven everything that he has needed to prove: that he is the true all valley champion through his heart and not just his skill

  • @dantespimp
    @dantespimp 2 года назад +5

I actually took Miguel's choice to quit the fight as the ultimate act of a true champion. Of all the characters this season, he took Miyagi's "No be there" lesson to heart. He knew fighting in this tournament wasn't right - it was being done for all the wrong reasons. Daniel was too cocky that he didn't consider losing to Cobra Kai at all, so he went into this tournament ignorant. Meanwhile, Johnny went into this tournament out of jealously and pride. Neither sensei should've been there since both weren't in a proper head space. Their defeat was inevitable. Miguel realized this. He knew there was no way to actually 'win' this fight, so he chose the alternative: 'no be there'.
That aside, I think Miguel would've lost to Hawk had he fought. As you mentioned, Cobra Kai would've won had Hawk lost. So Miguel had to go. At least by leaving on his own accord, he remains the undefeated champion lol.

I think what robby said at the prom was right. Miguel and johnny both look for something to fill the void in one another. Miguel looks for a father figure in Johnny since he never knew his actual dad. And johnny sees miguel as a sort of secound robby. Johnny probably sees Carmen and miguel as the family he couldnt have with Robby. Deep down both arent quit right for eachother in that position tho. As much as johnny loves miguel , miguel cant replace Robby. And as much miguel loves johnny , Johnny will never be the closure and dad he was looking for.

This was a very interesting conversation analysis. 💯 The writing for season 4 definitely seems to have escorted Miguel to taking a back seat when arguably his father son relationship/dynamics with Johnny Lawrence was in some ways the heart of the story. Johnny blew it this season but the good thing is that Johnny instinctively instantly recognizes it. What's sad is that Robby's actually right when he tells Kreese that he's not going to be a pawn in Kreese's rivalry with his dad and Daniel. Robby knows what everyone else doesn't. This Sam and Miguel are almost manipulated by the father's and father figures in their life to fight for some reasons that have nothing to do with them, and that's sort of sad even with as amazing as this show overall is. DANIEL IS HAUNTED BY HIS PAST MEMORIES OF BEING BULLIED AND IT TURNS HIM INTO SOME SORT OF MISGUIDED SELF RIGHTEOUS GANG LEADER OF SORTS (FROM A METAPHORICAL PERSPECTIVE) AS WELL AS JOHNNY LAWRENCE. COBRA KAI AND MIYAGIDO ARE VERY MUCH LIKE GANG RIVALRIES. I LOVE THIS WRITING ITS THE BEST I'VE EVER SEEN 😭. BECAUSE ONLY WRITING THIS GOOD COULD GET FANS LIKE MYSELF AS EMOTIONALLY INVESTED AS I'VE BECOME WITH THESE CHARACTERS.

I think Miguel walking away is more about subverting expectations than plot convenience. We’ve seen the whole “injured athlete must decide to continue” trope at least twice before in this series (fist w/ Daniel in the movie & later w/ Robbie in season 1). Doing that again would be WAY too predictable. Plus they set up that Miguel was CLEARLY over Johnny at that point. He was probably disgusted that Johnny would put his need to win over his health too, and decided to just walk away.

    • @migueldiaz248

Yeah he did kinda feel less important in S4 as he was in the first 3 seasons. I think S5 though will be interesting for Miguel as well as a new direction and something missing which is a original Cobra Kai series Main Antagonist while we have a colorful roster of new characters in CK with Miguel, Robby, Hawk, Sam, Tory, Demitri etc etc because up to this point we had John Kreese in S2-3 and Terry Silver and somewhat Kreese in S4 and more than likely Mike Barnes in S5 with Silver these are all Antagonist roles from TKK Movie series so what I’m getting at is we can have an OG CK Main Event Antagonist I’m not talking about minor ones we seen like Kyler and his gang in the first half of S1, Sid(theoretically), Trey and Cruz, Tom Cole, that sleazy Australian guy that dated Carmen and so on, what if during Miguel’s journey to Mexico City we come to find Mr Diaz is a powerful Cartel Kingpin that has a underground criminal syndicate empire this would make a new Main Event Villain for what seems to be Miguel/Johnny’s S5 arc whilst in the Valley you got Terry Silver and more than likely Mike Barnes with Snake and Dennis against Daniel and Chozen so S5 already has a really great set up as it makes room for Expansion in the series so I liked the cliffhanger ending with Miguel in S5. So I think it be kool if Miguel does run into Mr Diaz whom dismisses him initially not knowing who he is and Miguel explains to him about Carmen and he soon sees he is telling the truth and decides to coerce him into joining his Cartel business and I think it be kool if Miguel has a half brother whom is wicked and corrupt taking after their Father to run the Cartel business and while on this journey Johnny can call up Bobby and Jimmy the OG Cobras and these 3 go on a journey in Mexico City fighting Cartels, Thugs, Drug Dealers, Gangsters to save Miguel Streets Of Rage or Final Fight style, maybe while Johnny goes on the journey with the OG Cobras they have Robby go with them too since his arc is just open in the air and seems to lean he will actually connect with his Father Johnny this time and also for Miguel could see him as a brother figure more so than his half biological evil brother thats how I think S5 could play you can have Miguel fight his half brother and loose due to his previous injury and Robby take him on and so he has an atonement for what he did to Miguel in S2 as well as seeing how wicked Mr Diaz is come to accept Johnny as is Father and Miguel as a brother figure whilst Miguel has an arc where he is emotionally torn at what Mr Diaz and his half brother are leading both Johnny and Robby to council his disheartenment. Miguel leaves MX with Johnny, Robby, Bobby and Jimmy to the Valley maybe at Ep 9 they get out of there meanwhile a defeated Mr Diaz and his second son recuperate since mercy was shown to them and it won’t be the last we see of them all this whilst Daniel and Chozen been confronting Cobra Kai ran by Terry Silver, Mike Barnes, Snake and Dennis. Again this is my fan theory feel free to leave feedback and your thoughts.

I didn’t really like season 4 for this reason also the way they can fix these issues you’re talking about is just make the episodes longer which I have no idea why they haven’t even done it. Each episode should be about an hour long that would be perfect for every character to interact more. Also at the end Demetri gave Eli an ultimatum saying that he would rather pick eagle fang than join miyagi-do like does he not remember Miguel is also his best friend and isn’t Miguel Demetris close friend as well? that didn’t make sense at all I understand they needed to do this to complete Hawks story line but still Johnny was his first sensei

Despite Terence Silver, I didn’t yearn to rewatch any of the episodes, which is sad.

  • @Amor1990

Let me entertain a different perspective.
I can see how you would look at this from your perspective and why you thought it stuck out the most, but I don’t think it is the same for a 16 year old kid?
I don’t think Miguel’s storyline was any less important than anyone else. All you have to do is put yourself in his shoes and relate that to someone his own age in the world today. Life lessons, social media, etc. all comes into play. Quality over Quantity.
When Miguel bonded with Daniel their were myriad obstacles to overcome to becoming a man.
Those things he did with Daniel are challenges for young kids. It only looked easy because Daniel is a natural.
Miguel thinking he was a loser because of community college. Daniel teaches him how to fix a car. That’s a challenge. When Daniel told them to catch a fish. Miguel had to use his brain. He could of easily gave up, especially after he fell in the water.
Things started getting weird for Miguel when he was late for dinner and Johnny forgets he’s talking to a kid and starts going on about sex.
That’s my perspective. Others have their own. Everyone’s story arc is just as important as the others. It just depends who’s looking.
You could look at his storyline being sad, sure. While Miguel may feel sad at times, he’s still strong on the inside. To be strong enough to leave Johnny and go seek out his Dad.
I see his storyline as being one of the best things because I like challenges in life. That’s what tv shows and movies do to people. And this show is doing a great job at teaching those crucial life lessons to bring back with you in reality.
We get to see Miguel’s struggle, how he will overcome it. It builds character and will help you overcome any Adversity in your life.
My only complaint is at 9:14 where you talk about Kreese. You picked a bad moment to use Kreese because if you haven’t noticed, he is very slowly turning over a new leaf. I wouldn’t doubt if he buries the Hatchet with Johnny and Daniel.
Remember who Kreese was before the war? He was actually a good dude. There is never such a thing as a bad student.
