Great video. Very informative. I had the same issue with some tamron lenses using the R adapter. Even in live view, the focus was just too inconsistent and I didn't feel I could rely on them any longer. I now have RF glass exclusively. Never an issue.

Great video. I tried the Rokinin on my EOS R, I had the same problems with the focus hunting. I couldn’t stand it, I sent it back and that’s the reason why I bought the RF 85 1.2. I did not experience the problem with the exposure like you did. But I also thought I had a bad land so I sent it back and have them send me out a second copy and it did the same exact thing. It works better on one shot. But I never had that problem with any other lens either.

The firmware update must work because I never experienced focusing problems. BUT I still returned a Rokinon (Samyang) RF 85 f/1.4 and picked up a Canon RF 85 f/2 today. The colors, sharpness, contrast and AF performance convinced me. Thank you for the timely review.
I had the same dilemma. I've had my Samyang for couple of days now, including a fotoshoot on Saturday and facing no troubles with my RP, even w/o firmware update. The trouble may be with R5, R6 - the latest firmware 3.0
Great Review Alex! I was about to purchase this lense last week and was looking for a review exactly like this but could not find one. I would’ve loved to see this with the New lense update because I have heard of that fixing a lot of the issues and I would’ve loved to see high speed continuous shooting and if the focus would keep up.
Anyway I think you convinced me to buy the canon 85 instead.

Thank you Alex for very good review. Special thanks for provided RAW files. It helped a lot. For those who is hesitating what to choose, I can give my point of view, as I used to have both lenses. Originally I ordered RF 85 F2.0. Very nice lens. No complains except several things. Front element extends significantly on any occasions. Each time when you insert back the SD card to the camera, the front element moves front and back which is annoying. Placing a workng camera (while the front element is out) on a flat surface (table), immediately generates vibrations as image stabilization gets involved. So, I purchased a lens hood to protect the front tube while moving out. Another issues are really noisy auto focus and very nervous bokeh. The last one is the price. You can get a similar results from ef 85/1.8 in a half of price or even less. So, I returned it. Now I got the Samyang. I also purchased a dock station as I was really scary with the review. My copy came already upgraded with version 3. So, both lenses are used on Canon RP. So far, Samyang has quieter focus , front element doesn't move. It looks very sharp on wide open (F/1.4) . The color rendering is also good. The vignetting wide open is strong. I have checked the diaphragm noise while shooting in a silent mode and yes, Samyang is noisier but it is nothing to complain about it. In terms of reliability only the time will tell. On my opinion it's really nice lens, with much pleasant image rendering compare to Rf85/2.0. I believe the only issue with the review here is the fact that the lens was not updated with the latest firmware, and was tested on the body (Canon R5) which was released after the lens was already on the market. The clear example is, when Alex closed the diaphragm to F/2.0 the lens remains wide open. This is the reason for overexposure on Samyang lens. I hope this explanation might also helps to make a proper decision. Good luck!

Great comparison.
One word about the focal plane. Samyang is very well known for making lenses decentral. So the out of focus part at the bottom of the image could also be because the lens is decentral (manufacturing defect).
I have changes several of my Samyang lenses for this issue before getting a good copy.
Thought I would mention.
Very interesting comparison. I have the old Samyang EF manual version, and it too has the same color shift, which usually really is not pleasing. Yes, to some extent you can compensate in post, but even though I would appreciate the 1.4, I will probably go for the Canon.

I returned the Rokinon (Samyang) lens because of the focus hunting. I was just constantly struggling with it trying to focus, losing subject, being slow, etc.

I'm a big fan of your videos. You have a great attitude, are always upbeat and really give the viewer a solid opinion. I was previously using a crop sensor camera, but due to a terrible coffee accident, took the jump and purchased a EOS R earlier this year. The full frame lenses I utilize are as follows: rf 24-105 f/4L, ef 50mm f/1.8ii, e.f 200mm f/2.8L. The first thing I noticed when switching from a crop sensor to a full frame body was that I lost a lot of separation and bokeh with the 50mm due to the relative decrease in focal length which had previously been approx 81mm or so. I'm not extremely happy with the sharpness of that lens below f/2.8 but I often compromise to f/2.2 to get that nice separation in my images. Naturally, upgrading to the rf 85mm f/2.0 seems like a good option, and I might as well also grab the $200 rf 50mm f/1.8 because it's $200. My question is, do you think it would be a better option to A.) get those two lenses, B.) get the ef 50mm 1.2L even though it's older and on the ef mount, but really gives a lot of artistic possibilities with that aperture size (I would have to use the control ring adapter obviously) or C.) save up and get one of the newer rf 1.2Ls which are currently way out of my price range? Honestly, spending too much over $1000 on a lens may not be cost effective for me at this time. I am leaning on the new RF 50 1.8 and the 85 F2. This option would give you newer updated glass in a native mount. It would also keep the size of your kit down. My biggest recommendation with these two lenses is to buy the extra lens hoods. Def helps when shooting in direct sunlight.

Have Samyang didn’t have any of those issues that I noticed but I only had it a few days before i updated it. I am going to go back and check it now 😁
when you slightly shake lens(rf 85 f/2.0), does it has free play of inner barrel (wobble)?

I have the Samyang and it's amazing on my RP and look forward to using it on my R6 shortly. Please update the lens using the docking station. Canon of course makes awesome lenses and I enjoy my rf50 and rf35 1.8s but I love destroying the background with my Samyang
Latest firmware for Samyang RF 1.4 fixes exposure problems and focus hunting, and also turns on ibis in the R5 body wich does not work with prior firmware for the Samyang.

So true. Even though there is a new firmware for the Samyang, I would still choose to stick with mamas lenses! I tend to keep my lenses for years so I do not mind paying more. That beeing said, I will be very interested to see the Sigma 85mm DN version that is already available for Sony
I don’t yet own a 85mm for my canon EOS R. But I would like to add it to my collection. A few weeks ago a rented the Canon EF F1.4 . I was suprised how many shoots were in focus. I would like to use the 85mm for loveshoots en family photosessions. Would you recomment the RF 85mm f2.0 or the EF 85mm f1.4

The focusing comments are meaningless w/o stating the Samyang firmware version. Seems it's v1 while it's now v3, released on Oct 22 w/ IBIS, H/H+ support.
Plus the AF on the RF 85 macro can be ridiculously slow even with locked focus for shorter distance. Some say it is OK for photography, but it is a pain in the *ss for videos, and it is shorter than 85mm? This is a no for me.
The AF of my Samyang RF 85 1.4 works totally fine on my R6 (firmware v3). The IBIS works as well on the Samyang. When reviewing lenses, please make sure to use the latest firmware.

Great review! I was thinking about the Canon RF 85mm. The missing focus of the Samyang would be a big issue. I always questioned how they got the lens out so fast.
I would not say it was fast. Hasn’t the mount been out for 2 years or so.
Iam using eosr wedding photography which is best canon or samyung canon is macro
I have the sigma 35mm 1.4 art, and with the firmware updated I don't have any problems with the autofocus in 6 years.

I have the samyang down here in San Antonio, I also have the lens station for it. Samyang just put out an update for that lens for the RF mount and the only way to update that lens is with the lens station, I purchased my lens station from Rokinon or you can send the lens in. The update V.3 improves the lens substantially 👌🏾
Thank you!! I bought the Canon: the IS and 35cm focus distance were the clinchers for me. And now you showed the focus reliability issues with the Samyang I am happy with my decision. Although, that bokeh on the 1.4 was very nice, but at the expense of focussing inaccuracy, I can live without it!
Another thing you didn't mention - on the Canon RF lenses I find the control ring very useful. I normally use it for aperture, I'm old-school and my first SLRs' lenses back in the 1980s had real aperture control rings so I've really enjoyed going back to that. Especially with the clicky sensation so it real feels like an aperture control ring. I also use the M-fn button to give me depth-of-field preview, which is incredibly useful in everyday shooting. I look forward to Sigma eventually offering some RF mount lenses. Their success with Sony E mount lenses is well-established, especially the Art series.

8.15 bluring is more, because the head is a little closer camera and focus is a little closer that do huge different in background. For this comparision you must use stabile model.
Alex, you disclosed the conditions under which you were able to make this review. A single day of shoot without the latest firmware is not the best scenario to appreciate what a lens is or is not. Thank you for your hard work under difficult circumstances and I hope you get the opportunity to get back to us on that later... in the spirit of fairness :)

Looks like the Samyang is shooting at a wider aperture when you set it to f2.0. That would explain the brighter than simulation pictures since the camera does it with the lens wide open, and greater bokeh balls in the Samyang pictures when you compare them at the same aperture.
How is rf 85 f2 for wedding photography? Betterthan samyang f1.4??

What I think is that Sigma needs to hurry up and release some RF glass before I start picking up Samyang lenses. Right now I am using an EF 85mm f1.4 Sigma Art adapted to my EOS RP, but I would love to have a smaller lighter native RF 85mm lens. Don't get me wrong I love that Sigma Art 85mm, it's an absolutely fantastic lens that makes some beautiful photos, but it is such a pain to lug around.
Also just for what it's worth I have never had an issue with my Sigma lenses missing focus on my RP... On my old DSLR body I had issues with them missing quite frequently when shooting through the viewfinder. But I also found that when shooting in live view the hit rate was actually almost perfect. That was actually a large part of why I wanted to upgrade to a mirrorless camera, and so far I have not been disappointed because it just works.

It's interesting, because here in the UK, especially during sales, you can easily find the Samyang for £480 ($640), but the Canon has been a constant £650 ($870). I'll let you be the judge of which deal makes more sense.
Image stabilization is only a suitable substitute for a wider aperture if your subject isn't moving.
Great review. I will have to voucher Alex's review. I recently purchased the samyang lens under retail, pretty much the same price as the new Canon 85mm 2.0. All the things that are happening with my Samyang, is true. It is a bit of a learning curve but a minor pain as well. I agree with Alex's summary. I am not a wedding photographer, so this lens suits my photography needs. I still think this lens a good buy, even with its minor flaws. Oh yeah, you never mention the weather sealing on the Samyang ;)
I have the E-mount version of the Samyang 85/1.4 AF for my Sony and it works great. The dock and firmware update are easy to get. Sam Hurd recommends the Samyang over the Canon RF, except for macro and video. See his video titled "Canon 85 2.0 // why I returned it".
The firmware will never change the Samyang letting much less light through with a given f-stop.
Same with the curved plane of focus.
When I purchased my EOS R8, my lenses are Tamron 35mm f1.4, Tamron 70-200mm f2.8 G2 and Canon EF 24-105mm f4 Mark 1.
Now I sold my Tamron 35mm f1.4 and currently selling my Tamron 70-200mm f2.8 G2.
The EF 24-105mm f4 Mark 1 is my backup lens if I need a more walkaround lens that have better reach.
I decided to have 1st party lens and change my lens setup now I'm using RF 15-35mm f2.8 mostly as I love wide lens and planning to buy RF 85mm f2 for portrait.
Unless Canon allowed 3rd party lens, I will stick with 1st party lens.
Still hoping for a Tamron 35-150 f2-2.8 in a RF mount and pair it with my RF 15-35mm f2.8.
Great comparison! I went with the Canon for the reasons mentioned. The IS alone puts it a step ahead, everything else not even considered yet.
I found that the hunting for focusing on the Samyang RF 85mm f1.4 was due to continuous AF being enabled. I disabled continuous AF and the lens quit hunting automatically.
Is the problem there even after the firmware update to v.3?
Samyang with the latest firmware (dec2020) does autofocus perfectly and faster than the Canon f2.0 (that drove me nuts when getting the correct moment on a walk of a Model). Also, Video autofocus is nearly noiseless and smooth and without pumping on an R6. With the Canon Lens, you need always use the limiter, and sometimes it tries to go the wrong direction when you changed the scene (from narrow to distance or the other way round). Recommendation without the latest firmware is not perfect. But what really is much better on the Canon Lense is less distortion (when not corrected), less vignetting, and higher contrast (more brilliant colors), and of course as you mentioned it the Macro capability. But faces render perfectly smooth and sharp on the Samyang with an elegant transfer from the sharp area to the background. Models usually like that pleasing skin rendering (not too much contrast on defects but perfect sharpness on contours). Samyang really does care about improving the firmware on their lenses and that pays off. The only thing is either having a USB port on the lens or giving a dock to every customer so everyone can benefit from their work. Perhaps ask them if they can lend you another one, well centered with the up to date firmware to verify the capabilites.

With 3.0 you can take really sharp pictures with the Samyang at 1/10 of a second too. Because with FW 3.0 the IBIS of the R6 is working together with the Samyang.
Samyang is famously known for their lack of quality control while you may have a good model there are many that have flaws.
Marcus Free , but the same is told about Sigma and Tamron. If you buy a lense for half the price of an original, you know that you don‘t get the same. On the other side I have had a brand new Sony lense, that was awful before Sony repaired it for me. A few years ago the same game with a Nikon prime lense. 🤔🙂
@@frankelbefotografie unfortunately that's just not true. Up until about a year ago I was still working for a camera store in New York part-time and it's nothing like the other third party brands. They just don't have good quality control do other brands have bad units 100% but it's not on the same level it just isn't

@@supernupe I got it for £479 Wich was a good deal and so far I love it. It is not perfect as got a lot of vignetting but it doesn't affect me on portrait, easy to remove it in post production I'd needed

You are trading background blur but also the ability to stop action by one stop if you don't want to up your ISO. What was the firmware version on the Samyang?
I don't think the Samyang has field curvature, as you can see in Christopher Frost's review. Maybe it's the fact that the camera is tilted slightly downwards to put the face in the upper third of the picture?
I'm no expert but you had iso 125 on the canon and iso 200 on the samyang so I think that was the reason why the samyang was slightly over exposing? Great comparison none the less 👍🏽
I have the samyang, and the newest firmware. No hunting issues at all. I had an issue that the IBIS was not working with the original firmware once I updated no issue. I do notice it does not track animal eye autofocus as well as my Canon lenses. The funny thing is I have hunting pulsing issues with my canon ef 70-200 on both the R5 and the R. But don't have the issue with the samyang.

Is the continous AF is turned on? If this is the case, the AF is working every time, even if you don't push a button. The continous AF is not needed. It only drains the battery.
It has been my experience with Samyang/Rokinon that they make amazing glass and horrible autofocus, at lease on the ef mounts. I have 6 Cine lenses and love love love them. I had several of their auto Focus that I sent back because they sucked on a canon camera.
That was a sooo much wanted comparison, and I totally agree, that you have to be able to rely on your gear when you are at a gig. So I think Canons RF will be in my bag instead of the Sammy. Da**... I hoped for some other result.

Well the samyang lens does its job way better than expected! But only after I did a firmware update to version 3. For a price around 600 € it's well worth it!
And how the lens feels after the update? Is the focus better and without hunting a lot?

I have the Sony E-mount 85mm F1.4 samyang lens & all the issues you have I don't get.. im not saying its a canon issue but .. Canon needs to start working better with 3rd party manufacturers like Sony do . also you should try & test it again with the updated firmware as you conclusion is not really fair on Samyang
I have the Samyang RF 85 1.4 and the sigma EF 85 1.4. The samyang lens got way better with the firmware. Before the update the IBIS in my r6 did not even work with the lens. However I found the lens slight missing focus even though eye af was locked, even after the update. My sigma 85 did the exact same thing with my previous camera, the eos R. On the R6 however, the Sigma does NOT miss one single shot. It is extremely accurate. This kind of sucks because the formfactor, the weight and the filter diameter on the Samyang is truly amazing. The sigma is unpleasant to bring and almost 1kg heavier, + you have to use the ef-rf adapter.

Strangely, my Canon 85/1.8 brought me a horrible amount of misfocussed (front focussed) images back home on the R6, while my Sigma lenses were reliable. Currently rather clueless why, because it is difficult to get the same bad results.
And I would not say Canon lenses are more reliable. The 50/1.2 for example was a focus diva back in the days and I always preferred the Sigma 50/1.4 Art against it. With the exception of the 35/1.4 which wasn´t on point before updating, I never had focussing issues on any Sigma lenses, even back in the days shooting with Sony (pre-Art 50mm).
i know this video is rather old but wonder what you think to use the samyang for video - maybe "best" on a tripod interview kind of work. Cant imagine using it for any action or big camera movements anyways. haha

There is a firmware version 2 and 3 update. These make the lens compatible with the IBIS in the R5
Interesting, I have Samyang and it's no problem with it. AF is great, it's Sharp, maybe white balance is little warmer.

12:10 most people do not shott continuous AF and therefore will not have that issue.
Would removing the lens and putting it back on stop the pulsing on the Samyang?
No. The lens needs a firmware update for R5/R6 and then that issue is fixed. The issue does not occur on the RP or R. This was either shot prior to the FW update being available, or they did not know about the update. Unfortunately you need a $60 USB dock to perform the update, but even with that additional cost you are still less than 1/3 the cost of the 85L.
Just a question, from an image quality point of view, the samyang is better that the tamron SP85 1.8 ? Is it worth to move to the samyang ?

This "hunting for focus" is typical for firmware1 with r5/r6..it will be fixed with firmware Samyang V3.
I am really disappointed, Alex, that you have not included this well-known and important point in your comparison. R5 / r6 with Samyang firmware V3 cannot be compared with V1!
Why are you disappointed? He explained and showed us the issues he was having with the lens and also mentioned that it could be firmware related but he didn't know for sure. Would it be better to say the lens performs better with V3 but not have actually shot with V3 firmware? It also wasn't his lens so I can understand not updating the firmware when you borrow someone else's lens for a day. He managed to get a copy of the lens, get some very useful shots in trying conditions, get his wife to be a volunteer model for the day again and put together a great real world use comparison for you to watch for free.
"Thanks" might be a more appropriate word, instead of "disappointed".
