Another excellent video...thank you. Well I've a hard time parting with any of my "L" and Art lenses for the RF engineered plastic replacements...but I did buy the RF 24-70 after selling my "L" 50/1.2. I did compare two RF lens rentals and to my eye, my "L" 85/1.4, 24/1.4 and Art 135 were just as sharp w/o any focusing issues, but the RF 50/1.2 outperformed the "L". Used my R (selling) and R5...RF adapters are great.

Interesting to note as well is the fact that the rf 85mm f1.2 is the most zoomed in of the bunch. I've actually seen in several reviews that the sigma 85mm is actually a few mm short of a true 85mm. I think the f1.2 is actually a hair longer than 85mm (which will give a bit more compression and blur) so I actually like that personally.

Getting caught up on my JG videos cause, ya know, can't be missing any! Digging the Christmas change up in the intro music. Love these comparisons. Frankly I'm shocked with the Sigma ART, those lenses have always been razor sharp when you nail focus so to see it lagging behind the Canon glass is surprising. Maybe if and when they bring out their RF mount lenses the sharpness will get back on par with the Canon glass. I still haven't pulled the trigger on any RF glass yet, I'm not sure where I want to go, lol.

The macro was sharper in the middle but less DOF or sharpness as you moved around the edge of his face and overall the Sigma 1.4 and the Canon 1.2 were very close and preferrable to the macro once we got to the mid frame. However the Canon 1.2 compared to the Sigma does have better contrast, CA and of course it won the full body images.

I remember you asking me a little while ago what I thought of the RF 85 1.2 since I had one and me saying how much I loved it, with the fact I had absolutely no chromatic aberration. The sharpness is staggering. As a product photographer, I’m now waiting for the RF100 2.8 macro as the EF is my go to lens for most of my work. Thanks for this. I still haven't jumped into the RF system yet. It's a big gulp. The 85 is my money lens so this is a great video. One point you don't mention is carrying round the 1.2 all day even in studio is a real challenge. I still cannot decide what I would do but tbh that is a huge factor. If you really don't need the 1.2 1.4 f-stop and shooting with flash predominantly and are at f 7.1/8 most of the time I am not sure the big extra money or weight are worth it. The 1.2 looks more like a 90mm based on this an other reviews. Not sure why they did that.

Thank you for this careful testing and presentation! I recently upgraded from the 5Dmk2 to the R5 and I've found that the R5 makes painfully obvious flaws in EF L-class lenses that didn't bother me so much in the past. The 85/1.2Lii still takes breathtakingly beautiful shots with great contrast, but working with wide apertures, the false color in hair and in reflections on glasses' frames and the like is really objectionable at high magnification. It's hard to un-see these things once you see them. Of course, stopped down to f/5.8 or f/8, these chromatic aberrations disappear. I would be curious if you have any demos showing the EF 85/1.2Lii vs. the RF 85/1.2 stopped down to studio apertures.

@@JohnGress Ok just watched...Well damn. I 'll say this for the money that f2 is really a good value. I shoot mostly wide open and not usually in studio. I do all sorts of stuff including portraits...but I usually shoot outdoors and I like shallow depth of field (mostly) So, yes that is another check mark for the 1.2 and even the 1.4. However, f2 is not "slow" by any stretch and I thought I could live with it not being as sharp as the 1.2. wow that is a huge difference in price though. I might get the f2 for NOW and then look for a "refurbished" 1.2 later when available. I think I will email canon CPS and get a loaner to try. Thanks Good stuff!

That makes total sense. The 85f2 is a great value. I would have waited for a refurbished 1.2 lens if i didn’t think I’d be returning it. 🤣 Maybe there will be a $1200 100 f 2.8L soon.

I regret that I didn't move around more within the headshot fame @5.6 once I was at 100%. The macro was sharper in the middle but less DOF or sharpness as you moved around the edge of his face and the Sigma 1.4 and the Canon 1.2 were very close.
