Dustin, thank you so so much for this review! Just purchased the Samyang 85mm F1.4 AF for my Canon EOS RP based on your review, and I absolutely LOVE this lens. By far the best lens I have owned to date. This lens is tack sharp at F1.4 and has speedy auto focus even in low light. This lens is a game changer at $700!
This was a pretty long video but didn't feel stretched. Your reviews are always very engaging and very well organized. I hope more people see you and your videos.
What a cracking new lens! Samyang has certainly put the cat amongst the pigeons with this beauty, what surprised me is how crisper the images are compared to your loyal and trusted Tamron 85mm of which was sharper then the EF85mm 1.4L that you compared it to, such is technology and how it moves forward. Photographers have never had it so good with lens and camera choices these days!
I use this lens on my A7III and I love it. Now that it is available for Canon, I just need the R5/R6 (with IBIS) and I am ready to switch back to Canon. I am tired of dealing with Sony colors.
I barely shoot any video, but after the third update (the latest is the 4th), it improved a lot... I think still not to the level of the sony 85 1.8, but usable for real life stuff.
I watched this video about 10mo ago. I purchased this lens immediately after watching it. It’s been my go to lens both in studio and out. I’ve shared the link to video countless times. I started with it on an RP. Did amazing! Now paired with the R5, I will not ever see the need to go to the canon version. I appreciate this video and what this lens has done for me!
Maybe not game over. What other camera manufacturers offer a 85mm 1.2. It’s silly larger and pricy AF, but if you use the 85mm in your line of work even 40% of the time, wouldn’t that be a proper investment? I’m only just now switching to mirrorless. I’ve had my 5D Mark fours for four years and most of my lenses for 3 to 6 years and my 70-200mm L II 9 years! I just sold that lens for 1000. I sold the mark IVs for 1600 and 1800 with a grip. I didn’t get the R5 because I’ve taken a good hit to my business this year. Instead I bought a used R for 1350 and a used RP for 750. Getting ROI on gear is just one part of being a successful freelance photographer. So the price of this lens is perfect for me but if I shot a ton with the 85 I would by Canons 1.2 in a heartbeat. So I agree with what you’ve stated except for the game over.
@@f0t0b0y I also think that spending thousands of dollars on L lenses is worth it. But, I don't need em. Cheap Samyang primes are already exceeding my needs.
I ended up buying one of these two weeks ago to pair with my RP and the R5 I plan to buy early next year. I am in love with the way it renders. Such a massive step forward in image quality from my EF 85mm f/1.8, and I’m nailing focus much more consistently than I was with the copy of that lens that I owned before buying the Samyang. Very pleased. Thanks for the great video. Content like this helps me to more intelligently invest.

Really appreciate this review, as well as your others. I was getting ready to sell one of my kids to pay for a new Canon RF 85mm. Now with this option, I get to keep him around AND I get a great new lens to boot. It’s a win/win. 😉
Did they stop making this lens or something? I can only find this in either an EF mount or manual focus in an RF mount I want the auto focus with and rf mount
hey Dustin! just finished watching the great video and re-reading the blog article about the lens. Would you consider the Samyang RF85mm over the EF 85 1.8 with an adapter for general street shooting and portrait work?
Hi Dustin, I have a copy of the Samyang 85mm F/1.4 FE for Sony, and by eyeing up the lens hood on your copy at 5:21, I think I can assert that my copy has a lens hood with the same length as the Canon version. I bought my copy in march this year.
I haven't tested it on ALL the R bodies, but thus far it has worked on all the ones I've tested. They no longer make it because Canon threatened them. They have completely resisted all autofocus third party development on Canon.
The 85mm f1.2L mark 2 rf can be had in good condition used under a grand and works perfectly with rf to rf adaptor and weighs less than the new 85mm f1.2L rf......as the older canon rf 85mm is now much closer in price to the Rokinon do you the if price between the old ef 85mm+rf adapter could be had for same cost as the rokinon....which way would you go?
That's a tough call. The older Canon isn’t sharper and will have slower autofocus, but it is a beloved lens above all because of its rendering. It also sounds like a pretty strong value that you can resale down the road without taking any hit. I really like the rokinon, though, and it focuses great and produces beautiful images.
@@DustinAbbottTWI My use would be slow moving subjects who are mostely people, couples, and christmas lights.. I'd get a seperate macro capable 85mm or 100mm for food shots and way-closeup, which would have image stabailization. My main goals are bokeh, sparkle, color and contrast and when flares do occ6how pretty they look rather than speed or resolution Dollars lost per year will be important if I upgrade later but points can be added for compactness and convenience
@@DustinAbbottTWI Hi Dustin, thanks for all your works: you're just the best. Now i'm here, one question : which one (samyang rf 1.4 or ef 1.2 II) has a better "3d effect", I am looking for a lens that offers a clear separation of the character and the background . Thanks a lot:)
It's not, unfortunately. This lens is definitely superior in both optical performance (different optical formula) and autofocus performance (different AF system).
Hey! I just came across this video because I'm looking to get this lens, thank you so much for taking the time to make this review, its one of the best I've seen for this or any lens to be honest! I have a quick question though, if it's not too much trouble would you mind sharing the lens correction profile that you made for this lens? I'm not that skilled in lens correction and Samyang has not officially released one either. If not, I completely understand! I just thought I'd ask thank you either way!
Hi Dustin, once again thank you for the great work you bring to us. I am interested in this lens, F mount version. I know it's a different design therefore I wonder if its performance can be poorer that the RF mount version. More than in the ultimate sharpness, I am interested bokeh/transitions quality, which seems great in this lens. What's your opinion? Currently I use an 85 1.8G for portraiture, it's a good honest lens, but I am tempted from the creative possibilities, the dreamy look characteristic of 1.4 lenses.
I really miss the Control ring on Samyang 85 1.4AF( RF ) , Do u think RF to EF adaptor will support Samyang 85 1.4 EF , so I can use the control ring on adaptor
@@DustinAbbottTWI It has that data now. I bought the lens for my EOS R based on your review and I am very happy. I chose it over the Tamron, even without IS.
Which test chart did you use for the comparison? Also we’re your real life photos sharpened in post? If not, what were the camera raw image settings? It seems like I am never able to achieve comparable levels of sharpness with my copy of this lens or any other lenses I own including the L series lenses. Thanks Mr. Abbot eh?
The test chart is one that I created myself and use for all my reviews. I have a standard sharpening setting that I use that I develop for each camera, so I have added no additional sharpening to the Samyang results. I’m on the road right now, and so I don’t know exactly what those settings are
I have the Tamron SP 85 f/1.8 and am still on the fence about the Samyang being worth the upgrade. The RF mount and f/1.4 aperture would be great. The review indicates better or equal focus performance and better sharpness. Any opinions? I am sitting on the fence.
As always, a great review Dustin. Happy to hear the autofocus works so well on the samyang. Canon will have a hard time justifying the price of the RF 85mm f1.2 going forward.
I think there will continue to be a market for the high end lens (there always is), and it does have some advantages. It's great, however, that people with a tighter budget now have a good option.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Some reviewers have found that the Canon 50 1.2 has to be opened to 2.8 or more for optimal results. Seems little point in spending a great deal of money on a 1.2 lens which doesn't shine wide open.
There’s always someone willing to pay for the extra for the best. Canon would rather produce less and charge more, it keeps the brand in the premium sector.
Dustin, have you played with this lens in low light conditions? I have read about some people struggling with focus hunting compared to the Canon RF 85 f1.2 version. I would really like to purchase this lens but focus hunting would really discourage me
I haven't noticed poor AF in poor light with it, myself, though I rarely use the same lens all the time (I'm always testing something new even though I own a lot of great lenses like this one.)
I’ve read the flaring can be bad especially shooting into direct sunlight. I love taking sunset and golden hour photos so I’m not sure to buy this one or wait for canons new 85mm f/2 coming in October
Hey Dustin! I was considering the tamron f1.8 vc with the control ring adapter, but really like the overall lighter package here with great isolation. My issue is that ive seen people mention heavy vignetting and poor light transmission. If you were in my boots (with eos R), which would you get? Only lens I have is the ef 70-200 f2.8 IS usm. Been considering tamron 45mm f1.8 vc and 35-135mm f2.8-4 as well as a tap in base, but I keep getting told to buy native glass which has me just thinking of dropping everything for the 28-70 f2. I would look at the other non-L lenses of RF but they just compromise alot in focus speed and quality, while the L lenses cost small fortunes for me.
Is there any reason to believe that the EF version of this lens would *not* adapt well to the R lens mount? From everything I've seen in reviews, the EF lenses by Canon have adapted very well to the RF lens mount.
Dustin will you be doing a review of the Canon 85 f/2? Am trying to decide between the two. I'd trade the 1 stop for the control ring if it's anything like my 135/2L
@@DustinAbbottTWI Appreciate that and the really good job you've done with this review. It wil be an interesting comparison when you get your hands on one. I'm leaning toward the Canon as I have the 35mm f1.8 macro and it really is a good lens for the money but the aperture advantage of the Samyang is holding meback a bit.
Could you judge a bokeh and image quality comparison between this lens and a Canon 135mm f/2 L? A used Canon is about the same price and I'm torn between these two focal lenghts.
Sorry, this is probably a very stupid question but if I have the rf24-105 f4 lens already and this lens is a 85 f4 then can't I get the same results with my 24-105 if I set it to 85mm? Or is there a benefit to having this prime lens? Cheers!
Thank you for the great review. I am using RP and debating between Canon EF 85mm 1.4 vs. Samyang 85mm 1.4 EF has IS vs. Samyang do not. Also, which has better image quality?
I think the Samyang is the better value, and I prefer the rendering because of lower CA. The fact that it comes in a native RF mount further pushes me that direction.
Hi Dustin. I use a canon R6 and shoot fast moving dog sports indoors and outdoors, but not for my main living. I have other lenses, but I loved the EF canon 85mm 1.2 II lens, but as you know the hit rate of AF was slow and poor. Is this a good alternative in terms of focus speed for my new canon R6? Is the expensive new 1.2 lens a lot faster in terms of AF speed with the new eye detection? Can you help? Can the Rokinon and Samyang do the job with nice quality blur and sharpness? Thanks!!
I've had good results with this lens overall, actually, though you need to be sure to have the most recent firmware for it, which might require buying the RF Lens Station if the newest firmware isn't installed.
@@DustinAbbottTWI thanks, Dustin. Is the rokinon different from the samyang? Are they essentially the same? Also, in your experience is the EF canon 85mm f 1.4 lens any faster AF than the samyang? Would there be any benefit to the older canon adapted mounted to the R6? Thanks!
Rokinon and Samyang are identical - just different branding. Why? I don't know. The RF version is a much better lens in every way than the EF version - optically, AF, and build.
Hi Dustin ,a complete elaborate review as usual. I wanted to as how is samyang 85 1.4 ef mount ? I wanted to buy for 6d mark ii. does it perform same way as rf mount?
@@DustinAbbottTWI Many thanks for the great review! Have you been able to try the R5 in combination with the Samyang 85mm AF (RF) lens? I have seen that IBIS does not work with the Samyang 14mm f2.8 (EF) lens yet, so I am curious to know if RF lens perform better in this regard.
After watching your review on Tamron 45mm and I just bought it last night, and Im looking for 85mm lens, recently. I cant decide between Tamron 85mm or Samyang 85mm, Im looking for good rendering which is not "flat" like what the sigma 85mm has. Which one to choose? Thanks Dustin for your dedication on making videos, it is really helpful 🙏
@@DustinAbbottTWI Did you get any update on that topic? I asked Samyang two days ago if they will provide Firmware Updates for RF in the future and their only answer was: “Due to technical problems, we are unable to provide information on RF mounts.” Asked Rokinon the same question and their answer was: “The firmware updates are released by Samyang. Please check with them.” They confirm to still sell RF Lenses and Lens Stations, but don’t seem to care if there will be updates. Might be just a temporary problem, but currently I am not sure what to think about their customer service.
Thank you for great, detailed review. Was wondering if this would be replace my Sigma 85 f. 1,4 Art for the EOS R. because of the weight saving, but I feel the difference overall is to small to justify a switch. Would be nice to get rid of that EF mount adapter though.
Hey, I'm wonderng about that Samyang. I've bought Eos RP and I do portraits shots. I don't know which 85 mm Will be better: Sigma 85 1.4 DG vs Canon Rf 85 F2 or Samyang RF 1.4 . Which one would you choose to portraits?
Great video Mr. Abbott! I'm considering buying a new 85mm lens and can't decide between the Samyang and the Tamron. I have EOS R without IBIS and I think the Tamron is a better choice. What do you think?
Hi Dustin, thanks for another great review. I'm just starting to move to an RF system most likely with an R6. Here in the UK Samyang have just started an Easter sale with the 85mm RF reduced down to £479 which is an absolute bargain! I put an order in for one this morning on the strength of the review, I just need Canon to drop a saving on the R6 now...! Well, here's hoping anyway... Thanks again.
@@DustinAbbottTWI In the UK the Canon 85mm F1.2 RF is just under £2700 so its a no brainer. I already have the 85 1.2L II which is one of my favourite lenses so it'll be interesting to compare. I suspect the Samyang will be a lot sharper and have less ca etc than the older Canon EF lens.
It's been a few years since I reviewed that lens, and on different systems, but I would say the Samyang definitely has less CA. I personally like it better.
@@DustinAbbottTWI thanks, I'm planning to upgrade to the RF mount and was concerned about the availability of high quality lenses that won't break the bank... This is a welcome development.
I always get excited when I see you are reviewing something I am looking at purchasing because your reviews are the best on RUclips. The only thing I am still unsure of with the lens is how well it handles backlight golden hour portraits vs the Canon RF 85 f1.2. Seeing the green and purple colour casts when shooting into the sun has got me wondering if it will show up in backlight shots
I saw your daughter's potrait on samyang website and figured that you will be the very first person to review this lens. Thanks for your extraordinary work and efforts. I clicked the b&h link but its pre-order, any idea when they will have in stock and start shipping? Thanks
I don't actually know when the lens will start shipping. Samyang is usually pretty fast with this, but the lens was just announced on Friday. It may be July before shipping starts.
@@DustinAbbottTWI i request you to answer my last question? Inwas confused between this lens and canon 85mm 1.4 is usm lens. Money is not a concern here i just want a better glass. Kindly help with my last query ,thanks
I got both the EF version of the Samyang 14mm and the 85mm for my recently purchased Canon R5. Awesome lenses and a great price steal over the Canon & Sigma versions.
Anyone with any doubt the lens is compatible with all RF mount systems I have tried this on my EOS R, R6, R6 MKII, and R5 I have had no issues the lens is great worth the money I was lucky to buy it off someone for 500 bucks and it was well worth it. Good videos Dustin!
Which one? If you are referring to the ART (the big one), the Sigma is very slightly sharper at certain points in the frame, but is huge...and I like the bokeh better from this lens.
thanks for the great review. Could you maybe share (via comment or another video) more of your experience how the autofocus especially eye-af performs in more realistic conditions like in on a photo shoot with multiple people? (Weddong/photo shoot)
Well, not exactly a lot of weddings and group portrait sessions going on. I did shoot a small group of friends (about six people) with it, and Eye AF worked fine.
Of course this lens that I own and LOVE on my Sony is now available on the RF system....AFTER I already purchased the RF 85mm 1.2! 😅 I’m not complaining however...😎
Dustin Abbott Well I certainly hope so... I mean... This is the 6th 85mm I’ve purchased from your reviews... Going back to the original Sigma 85 EX... 😅 You’re just THAT good...
I'm not sure that 135mm F1.4 has ever been done, so 135mm F1.8 or F2 is more likely. They have a very good optical formula already for a 135mm F2 lens, so I could see that happening. 105mm F1.4 is more unlikely, though I would love a lens like that. It's an amazing portrait focal length and aperture combo.
Thanks for another great review. Would love if you started sharing the raw files of the pictures you take in these reviews if It’s not too much of a hassle. The reason is so we can get a better Idea of the image quality. Every lens has its own character, for instance, subject separation, itˋs subjective to everyone but that’s why I’d like to have have the raw files to decide. Most portrait lenses have subject separation but some are better than others, but people don’t really go into that detail when reviewing, and subject separation is such a key ingredient to a beautiful image. I think that when you’re talking about the bokeh, that’s when you should include subject separation. Just saying it has a nice bokeh and showing round or oval balls in the background doesn’t really say much in my opinion, it’s hard to tell, because almost every lens’ bokeh looks pretty much the same, with subject separation it’s where it stands out.
Hi Patricio - thanks for the feedback. I occasionally share RAW files with my Patrons, but not with the general public. I provide a lot of free information publicly, and I need some special incentives for those that directly support my work.
Hi Dustin, Absolutely love your videos! They have been very informative and definitely helped me make decisions in the past. So I've been considering this lens(the Rokinon version) for some time, but have not bit the bullet. I have the EF 135 F2, but would like to pair that with an 85mm for when a more intimate session is required. I also have the Tamron 35 f1.4, and feel an 85 would be the perfect middle ground between the 135 and 35. Like you said, the RF 85 1.2 is just simply going to be out of the price range for many photographers. Now that Canon has finally released their RF 85 F2, I'd love your opinion between these two lenses. The Canon 85 f2 would be a bit cheaper here in Canada, but is it better than the Samyang/Rokinon? I believe the Rokinon is roughly $100 more. Not sure if you have had a chance to use the Canon RF 85 f2, but either way, I'd love your here your thoughts!

Colors are slightly warmer, yes, but typically not in an unpleasant way.
@@DustinAbbottTWI awesome, watching your viltrox review now, how does the colour compare to that lens
Got this on pre order soon as It was announced. Shot with samyang AF lenses on Sony and only have high expectations for this one!
I'm glad to say they are met!
Hi Dustin, I have a copy of the Samyang 85mm F/1.4 FE for Sony, and by eyeing up the lens hood on your copy at 5:21, I think I can assert that my copy has a lens hood with the same length as the Canon version. I bought my copy in march this year.
That's interesting. My copy was from early on, so that was obviously a change they made along the way.
Good advice, sir. Could I recommend a wireless mike for your videos? A lot of echo just using the camera mike.
I've never just used the camera mic, but I'd have to rewatch this video know what mic I used.
Any compatibility issues with any of the R bodies, Dustin? Samyang no longer makes this lens for some reason
I haven't tested it on ALL the R bodies, but thus far it has worked on all the ones I've tested. They no longer make it because Canon threatened them. They have completely resisted all autofocus third party development on Canon.
Hi sir. How is the low light performance? Is the lens hunting a lot?
I haven't found that to be the case at all. A larger aperture like F1.4 typically allows for better low light performance.
My main goals are bokeh, sparkle, color and contrast and when flares do occ6how pretty they look rather than speed or resolution
Dollars lost per year will be important if I upgrade later but points can be added for compactness and convenience
It sounds like either lens would work for your purposes. The Samyang will have higher contrast and sharpness at wide apertures.
Hi, is this lens for fullframe or crop sensor?
Full frame.
awesome video Dustin.
any news about the 35mm and 50mm? Since I use those two much more.
I don't know. I would love to see an improved 50mm, for sure.
Would you get this or the new canon f2 with IS. I have the eos R
I haven't had a chance to review the new Canon 85mm F2 yet. I'm hoping to soon.
Excellent review Dustin. How does this lens compare with the canon rf 85mm f2?
I've gotten that question a lot, but I can't really answer it until I have a chance to review the RF 85 F2
How is the EF version of this lens? Should I assume it is about the same as this RF version?
It's not, unfortunately. This lens is definitely superior in both optical performance (different optical formula) and autofocus performance (different AF system).
Hey! I just came across this video because I'm looking to get this lens, thank you so much for taking the time to make this review, its one of the best I've seen for this or any lens to be honest! I have a quick question though, if it's not too much trouble would you mind sharing the lens correction profile that you made for this lens? I'm not that skilled in lens correction and Samyang has not officially released one either. If not, I completely understand! I just thought I'd ask thank you either way!
If you are using Lightroom or ACR, just plug in a -2 for distortion and +100 for vignette, then move the midpoint to 0.
Is the EF version of this autofocusing 85 lens same as the RF version?
Unfortunately no. The EF version is a different optical formula and isn't as good.
Unfortunately the Canon EF and Nikon F versions of the lens are not the same optically as this lens...and aren't as good.
@@DustinAbbottTWI thank you very much
I really miss the Control ring on Samyang 85 1.4AF( RF ) , Do u think RF to EF adaptor will support Samyang 85 1.4 EF , so I can use the control ring on adaptor
I wouldn’t recommend that approach. The EF lens is not the same optically (worse) and doesn’t have as good of autofocus.
@@DustinAbbottTWI thanks for your valuable advice
Hi Dustin, does this lens have lens correction data like the Samyang RF 14mm? Thanks
It doesn't, which I find strange considering the 14mm did!
I’m on the road right now, and so I don’t know exactly what those settings are
@@DustinAbbottTWI thanks - I’d appreciate it if you could revisit this once you get back and get a moment
Hi Dustin
Thanks a lot for the review
Just a question, compared to the tamron 85 1.8, what’s your favorite ?
At this stage I'm more partial to the Samyang.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Hi Dustin, thanks a lot for your feedback, on which aspect, the Samyang making the difference on the tamron ?
Have a nice day
I have the Tamron SP 85 f/1.8 and am still on the fence about the Samyang being worth the upgrade. The RF mount and f/1.4 aperture would be great. The review indicates better or equal focus performance and better sharpness. Any opinions? I am sitting on the fence.
I sold the Tamron and kept the Samyang, myself.
Indeed! We need competitors as always
@@DustinAbbottTWI Some reviewers have found that the Canon 50 1.2 has to be opened to 2.8 or more for optimal results. Seems little point in spending a great deal of money on a 1.2 lens which doesn't shine wide open.
@@robertcudlipp3426 um, no. The 50 1.2 is fantastic wide open! Watch Dustin's review of it.
Dustin Abbott that’s great news. I’m really hoping this is a good alternative to the Canon version
I'm wondering which is the best choose between this Samyang and the Tamron Sp EF 85mm f 1.8 for portrait purposes. (I have a canon Rp) can u help me?
If you're on an RF mount camera, I would go with the Samyang.
I’ve read the flaring can be bad especially shooting into direct sunlight. I love taking sunset and golden hour photos so I’m not sure to buy this one or wait for canons new 85mm f/2 coming in October
It's no more flare prone than basically every other 85mm I've used.
Excellent Dustin as always , thank you.
My pleasure!
I would go for this Samyang. Don't let others put you off; it's a great lens.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Thank you!
Is there any reason to believe that the EF version of this lens would *not* adapt well to the R lens mount? From everything I've seen in reviews, the EF lenses by Canon have adapted very well to the RF lens mount.
Unfortunately the EF version is not the same optically. It is inferior both in optics and autofocus.
Dustin will you be doing a review of the Canon 85 f/2? Am trying to decide between the two. I'd trade the 1 stop for the control ring if it's anything like my 135/2L
As soon as I can. I'm waiting on new stock to arrive in Canada.
Do I go for the Samyang or the Canon 85mm F2 macro?
I've gotten this question a LOT, but until I have a chance to review the Canon, it is hard for me to answer.
Hi Dominik, I'm afraid I don't have access to the Canon 135L anymore.
Sorry, this is probably a very stupid question but if I have the rf24-105 f4 lens already and this lens is a 85 f4 then can't I get the same results with my 24-105 if I set it to 85mm? Or is there a benefit to having this prime lens? Cheers!
This is an F1.4 lens, not an F4 lens. This lens lets in 4x as much light and can create a MUCH shallower depth of field.
@@DustinAbbottTWI ah! Thank you! It's been a long day. I need to learn to read apparently!
Thank you for the great review. I am using RP and debating between Canon EF 85mm 1.4 vs. Samyang 85mm 1.4
EF has IS vs. Samyang do not. Also, which has better image quality?
I think the Samyang is the better value, and I prefer the rendering because of lower CA. The fact that it comes in a native RF mount further pushes me that direction.
Would you recommend this over the 85mm F2 ?
Only if you don't need the macro capabilities. As just an 85mm prime, yes, I prefer this lens.
The RF version is a much better lens in every way than the EF version - optically, AF, and build.
what can you say about the samyang 85 af for dslr canon?
That lens has a different optical formula and I haven't tested it.
Dustin, does that mean it's not compatible with my 6D?
I would be interested in this or the upcoming RF 85/2 IS Macro
I look forward to reviewing that lens.
Hi Dustin ,a complete elaborate review as usual. I wanted to as how is samyang 85 1.4 ef mount ? I wanted to buy for 6d mark ii. does it perform same way as rf mount?
I'm afraid that lens is not the same on basically any level. Autofocus, design, or optics. It is an okay lens, but not exceptional like this one.
@@DustinAbbottTWI ok thanks a ton

Not right now. I'm hoping that might come via firmware.
They tell you to turn them off on their website for best results
Is there a comparison of this lens with EF Canon lens? I mean more people are re-cycling EF lens...any advantage of using this vs EF Canon 85?
Hi Andrew - there are three current EF 85mm lenses, so you'll have to be more specific.
Thank you for great, detailed review. Was wondering if this would be replace my Sigma 85 f. 1,4 Art for the EOS R. because of the weight saving, but I feel the difference overall is to small to justify a switch. Would be nice to get rid of that EF mount adapter though.
If the size is a factor, the Samyang is definitely tempting. It's not quite as sharp, but I think it has nicer bokeh.
I like the Samyang best for its combo of size and performance.

I would personally go with this lens. It's fantastic.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Thanks for your advice! I've got the old version for the EF Mount and I was very disappointed in therm of solution and sharpness.
Hi Dustin, thanks for another great review. I'm just starting to move to an RF system most likely with an R6. Here in the UK Samyang have just started an Easter sale with the 85mm RF reduced down to £479 which is an absolute bargain! Wow - that's a great price for a great lens.
I'm waiting for Canon 85mm Rf macro comparision!!!
Great job!!!
I'll probably bring the 85mm F2 in at the end of the month.
How could I buy one for my Mark iii canon
I'm afraid it's only designed for mirrorless.
Don't remember if you had covered this in the review, but how close is the samyang lens image quality compared to an adapted canon 85 1.4 L DSLR lens?
The RF lens also does some veiling and ghosting when shooting in to the sun, so I wouldn't call the Samyang much worse.

How does it compare with the Sigma 85 mm1.4?
Which one? If you are referring to the ART (the big one), the Sigma is very slightly sharper at certain points in the frame, but is huge...and I like the bokeh better from this lens.
Would you consider this one or Sigma 85mm f1.4 ART?
I personally like this lens better than the Sigma. It's so much smaller and gives up little performance.
Dustin Abbott wow! Yes, from your review, it seems actually sharper than the Sigma (cause it’s sooo close to the best 85, the RF)
Dustin Abbott do you know if Samyang is planning on releasing some more RF lens? Like 35mm f1.4?

Of course this lens that I own and LOVE on my Sony is now available on the RF system....AFTER I already purchased the RF 85mm 1.2! 😅 I’m not complaining however...😎
If you already own the 85L, you're doing okay!
Dustin Abbott Well I certainly hope so... I mean... This is the 6th 85mm I’ve purchased from your reviews... Going back to the original Sigma 85 EX... 😅 You’re just THAT good...
Dustin, do you believe Samyang will come out with 105mm 1.4 or 135mm 1.4? I'd love to see a Samyang come out with something similiar to the Sigma Art
@@DustinAbbottTWI thanks Dustin, guess I'm dreaming of the perfect aperture, truly wish the canon f/2 didn't have quirks and slow autofocusing

Welcome aboard!
Can my EF 85mm 1.8 USM compete with the Samyang reviewed?
I'm afraid not...pretty much in any metric.

@@DustinAbbottTWI I m getting the Samyang then. Thanks.
I will be testing the Canon 85mm F2 in a few weeks, so I'll definitely do a few comparisons then.
