Brilliant video Shane! I don’t blame you for having a hard time choosing - I own the 1.2L and I truthfully didn’t even realise the Samyang was an autofocusing lens that was so much smaller and lighter. The canon definitely has the edge on sharpness, contrast, compression and bokeh, but I feel like any lens this expensive kind of needs to be glued to my camera to truly get the moneys worth out of it! If I could find the Samyang used and pay a price for it that I could resell it for, I might be tempted to get it as well and see if it finds a place in my bag - possibly for more casual shoots for my family and save the 1.2 for paid work… I too am waiting for companies like Sigma to adapt their 85 1.4 (and their 35 1.2!) to RF, that moment can’t come soon enough!

The feeling is mutual! Totally feel like it should be glued to my camera and using it all the time, but I just don't get it out as much as a should. The 50 is glued to my camera and usually a wide angle... Hoping for other 85mm options soon!

The blurriness of the shoe doesn't mean that you can't get it much sharper, it means that you would probably have to focus on the object the edge. It's very obvious that it's not just typical smearing and lack of clarity when it comes to edge sharpness, but it looks rather out of focus.
What this means is that Canon is much better at having a flatter field and the Samyang has a lot of field curvature.
A common thing in lenses, but obviously the premium lenses have optical designs that correct that.
That 85 RF L is real expensive, but it really appears like they went all the way with it.
    Untouchable sharpness - check.
    Great bokeh - check.
    Very few aberrations - check.
Close to zero field curvature - check.
I guess that's the reason why it's so massive.

It’s tempting to get Samyang due to massive price difference but imagine later down the line Canon releases a firmware basically bricking non-Canon RF lenses, including this one. I find it a very realistic scenario considering latest developments with third party RF lenses. Some people are already reporting issues with this lens mounted on Canon R bodies.

Well, then u will end up with Manual focus 85mm f1.4 lens. It wont be surprise as Canon is not exactly high on business ethics, constantly lying and cheating its customers, removing 10 years old features just to resell them as 'new option' later. Really sad for a market leader. Wont be a market leader for too long tho.

Great comparison Shane. For me, I love the 85mm focal length but due to space I don’t use it all the time. The Samyang is plenty good enough for me for weddings and portraits. Even though the canon lens is a little bit more superior lens, when you account for the weight and cost it’s not four times better than the Samyang lens.

Really great comparison in this video, as for the autofocus during the movement,lens/camera communication scenario. I’ve seen Gmaster on Sony vs this lens on e-Mount as well and they both had their strong suits vs some delay. However, back to this video, there were some good contrast shots the Rokinon had vs Canon’s white balance difference with a bit of sharpness

I decided a 85mm prime was my next lens. One day B&H had a used like new Samyang for sale ($600) and I was so tempted to get it, but figured I would rather be safe than sorry and let it go to continue to save for the RF85mm 1.2
I ended up kinda kicking myself for letting that go because you cant buy it anywhere, and most ebay actions if you find it were going for more $ for a lens with more wear.
Fast forward to last week B&H has these now for sale NEW for $800 so more than MSRP but still 1/3 the price for the RF85mm.
I picked it up, and I am SO HAPPY with it.
I just did a concert shoot with it, and it was by far my best and favorite lens.
I have 5 other RF L series lens and the speed, bokeh, and character of this lens beat them all.
So I am not sure I want to get the RF85 anymore, but may very well take my savings and put the RF50mm 1.2 in my bag.
I actually do not use lens profile correction in lightroom for this lens, as I like the natural character it creates.
As for being soft, I have not super pixel peeped, but it looks really sharp to me. So maybe there is a bit of luck of the draw in QC and some of us get better ones than others?

Nice comparison Shane, I purchased the Samyang on a try before you buy basis but had to let it go in favour of the RF85mm 1.2L. It's a pity as the Samyang handles so well, it's light and very well balanced on my R5, however after testing it properly, I found with my Commercial work that the yellow/green warmth of the images is a pain to constantly adjust in post, also at distance the Samyang needs at least f2.8 or higher to maintain sharpness, the lens also suffers quite badly from field curvature and that is the reason your shoes were becoming soft at the edges of the frame. Don't get me wrong, for the money the Samyang is a great buy and if you're using it for general photography up to 25 feet, then it's a good buy. The 85mm Sigma DN for Sony that you mention is an extremely sharp and a well balanced lens, but really suffers with barrel distortion, so one maybe to avoid if you shoot a lot of architecture or straight lines.

@@ShaneLongPhotography Definitely, indeed I compared the RF85mm against the 85mm Zeiss Otus and the Samyang, the RF and Otus both were so close in their results, especially colour rendition it was hard to tell them apart, but then these lenses are world class. The Samyang is such a good lens, and for weddings will be well suited, but if using it in conjunction with say your RF50mm, then you may have your work cut out in post adjusting the colour in post.

Hopefully, Samyang/Rokinon comes back in the market with the RF AF lens.

Thanks for this great comparison! I have the Samyang and I love it!! Of course it would be embarrasing if the canon for 4-5 times the price wouldn´t be a bit sharper and with better overall performance. But for me, considering the look of the photos without zooming in 300%, the size weight and of course the price, the Samyang is the best 85mm out there. Sorry that I´m so enthusiastic ;-).

Great comparison. The margins are so small. I think the sweet spot would be the Sigma 1.4 DN. It is more difficult for you, having the best lens in your hand a taking a slight step back as slight as it is. The great thing about the Samyang is that you can at least choose what your priority is. ie. razor sharpness or that little bit of extra separation. After getting my first dream lens, I quickly learned that my subjects were not as excited as I was about how my lens was able to show every line on their face, and every pour on their skin:-)

It's been my experience after shooting for a couple of decades, 99.9% of the people I photograph don't care what gear I use, as long as they like what they see in the pictures. I think all the "bokeh" and bokeh balls is what we photographers care about. The only people that have asked me about the gear I use were other photographers that hired me as a 2nd shooter. So, I would say, save the money b/c most of the time, your client (and likely you in a blind test) won't see a noticeable difference in the pics between those 2 lenses and similar ones.

I would love to see how the Mk II compares with the Canon RF 85mm f1.2 and with the Mk I Samyang. From other reviews I have seen I can tell you now that even the Mk II Samyang is not going to be as sharp as the Sigma 85mm f1.4 DG DN, but it is cheaper and lighter, and it has faster and more consistent AF...Even better than Sony's much more expensive GM version.

The Samyang only shows its flaws when pixel peeping. 90% of the time it wouldn't matter to the untrained eye which makes the Samyang worth the money. Does it still work with new Firmwares on R6 / R5? I am thinking about getting it used, but I fear that the newer camera firmwares will kill autofocus or sosmething.

Hey Michel! Sadly I can't help out as I ended up returning it and sticking with the 85 1.2 Maybe someone else can comment and let us know!

Great video! Did you have to update the firmware on the Samyang?

Hello! Sorry for the slow reply. I took a break from RUclips! Sounds like with the new Canon firmware the Samyang doesn't work right anymore. I already returned the lens or I could look into it!

What about chromatic aberration? I noticed it’s pretty bad in the Rokinon..

Good question. It didn't come up in the comparison shots I took, but I would guess that would be the case!

Have you noticed any focus issues with the Samyang? Many R5/R6 users are reporting the Samyang is not auto focusing properly and/or being bricked since the latest camera body updates.
My samyang is definitely not behaving correctly since I updated both my R6's.

I have sammy 85 ef mount and yes, its not sharp at all on r6 amd r6mkii. Pitty coz its light lens, ideal for travel and work. But this way ill sell it likely.

Uggh my samyang is now a brick. It no longer is read by the canon on the latest firmware. It’s a shame. Anyone else have this issue? I could degrade the firmware on the camera but it’s not ideal. I’ll probably have to get the canon soon.

Really??! That's crazy. Maybe thats why they discontinued it...

@@ShaneLongPhotography yeah, it could change again with the new firmware. I ended up buying the canon version and it is truly amazing. But if the lens starts working I’ll sell it.

No lens profile for correction, so heavy vignetting. But AF and aperture adjustment works. Just got mine and tried with both my R6 and R6ii. I am a happy owner. 😊😊
