What I really like about the Samyang is that its optical flaws create some kind of character to the images without adjusting anything in LR. Some vignette and a bit lower contrast at f1.4 I somehow really like in portaits I must say. Also it's warmer colors can be quite nice, but it is definitely not as clean as the Canon. Quite impressive what it delivers at f1.2 apparently.
Thanks for your assessment! 💯 I think you hit it on the head regarding the Samyangs optical flaws. It is a unique aesthetic exclusive to the lens and that's what makes it iconic! 📸💯❤️
This is exactly how I feel, I find myself most of the time not enabling the lens profile correction as I really like its native character. I got a mist filter to add to my L glass because its so sharp and clinical. The Samyang creates portrates just so nice right out of the box, just a touch of softness, a moderate touch of vignette. Granted starting with the best IQ gives you room to do more in post, but the cost and size and weight. It makes it hard to justify especially when many of us are publishing work that is way lower in resolution than the original thus the extra sharpness and detail really does not come thru for the Canon lens.
Agreed! I could not afford the Canon yet, but it's on my list.. However I was very lucky to secure a like new Samyang RF 85, and I really like it with its "flaws". Just back from a wedding shoot this weekend, running EF70-200 2.8 II, RF24-70 2.8 and the Samyang 85 1.4 on my R6 M1 and R6 M2, and all my favorite shots are from the Samyang, with a few exceptions.
I only just found out the Samyang existed, and this was a great comparison for me! While obviously everyone wants a primo Canon L portrait lens, the quality of this Samyang looks just fine. Thanks for this!
I have the Samyang with the docking station and firmware v3.0 and love it. That said, I am selling both as I moved up to the Sigma ART EF version. It's heavier and has just a slight bit better bokeh but it's sharper edge to edge and the minimal upgrade in cost is worth it to me. That said, these are the two that should be best compared, but I get why you went with the best f/1.2 to put it up against. I agree the Canon f/1.2 is far better and at a cost but the reality is outside real direct head to head specific testing, the vast majority will not be disappointed in any of the shots they take with a Samyang or Sigma in comparison. Side by side comparing set up shots showcasing specifics, perhaps but in the real every day world of those shooting, all of them will bring smiles.
Great insight! I do agree with you that subjects/models will be pleased with the picture out of either of these lenses! 💯 I'm sure you will be pleased with what the Sigma ART produces! 📸👏
While I agree with you that the Canon RF 85 f/1.2 is the King of portrait lenses and is bitingly sharp... I don't believe that that its 800% better since the price difference is 8x as much as the Samyang. I have the Samyang. It's good enough for portraits for me.
Thanks for your insight! The price difference is astronomical between both these lenses. Id say that at that price point you are paying MAINLY for the name but also the quality (in construction and clarity) and customer care on the back end. The samyang has shown that for a fraction of the price they can create a great alternative... and that's probably why Canon blocked third party lenses! Cheers! 💯📸
@@MilmidStudios I’m sure of it. Samyang messed up the game Canon was trying to run on us. Samyang priced their RF 85 less than Canon’s 3rd tier 85 f/2 and the Samyang smoked the lower tier Canon RF 85mm f/2 for less and competed with the RF 85 f/1.2 for half the weight and 1/8th the price.
@@apamacam4838 Yes I still have the Samyang RF 85 f1.4. It’s still working great even after all the firmware updates. I use it on an R5 and an R8. It’s working excellently.

These are usually used outdoor, wide open, strong light and in many cases, strong backlight. The main issues will be chromatic aberations and low contrast. In my experience the ranking will be like: Canon 85mm f1.8 usm < Samyang 85mm f1.4 < Sigma 85mm f1.4 ART < Canon RF 85mm f1.4. I won't mention the Canon f1.2 because it's too expensive, slow and the worse at everithing.
i have a canon R6 mark 2 and I don’t have the money for a canon RF 85 1.2 so should i go for a used canon EF 85 1.2 ll or new Samyang RF 85 1.4 if I’m getting both at the same price range.. 🙏🏽 suggest please
I think this comparison should have been done without the fuzzy filters, they just confuse the viewers and while you were concentrating on the left eye, the right eye seemd a bit sharper on the Samy if not on par with the canon. With that said, \i would certainly opt for the canon lens. It's the best or nothing for me...
Hello! Thanks for the comment. The Nikon DSLR seems like a good entry camera and the 18-250mm is a very versatile focal length. I'm a big proponent of the mirrorless camera systems these days but the Nikon DSLRs are tried and true. That setup will help you figure out your style of photography and then you can upgrade to faster lenses, and maybe even primes if you find yourself shooting at a particular focal length more than others. Best of luck! 👌💯📸

Haha thanks for the comment! The DS bokeh really did blow me away on this test with the specular lights! Either way the DS and non DS 85 f1.2 are truly spectacular portrait lenses 📸💯👌
Everybody wants f1.2 if they can afford it. This is more about confirming yourself if you can afford it or not. Not Worth is a justification that people give themselves that they can’t afford it. Because if someone says i can get one lens for free and pick one, i would pick 1.2 for sure. If the money isn’t the issue, why not get the better one even thought we know 0.2 difference is marginal.
normally there is no comparison possible because those are two different lenses and yeah, the clarity of 1.2 - jesus - but a good video and a good conclusion.
great video. theres a samyang used one for sale in my area for $1600, so yours was a steal. Its unfortuante that canon blocked 3rd party lens. Thanks for the comment! These third party lenses are really showing the inflated prices of manufacturer lenses! That being said, that 85 f1.2 is a real beauty. I'm yet to try the viltrox lenses but I've heard good about them! 📸💯
