Ya I know it's a long winded confusing video, but I was trying to play teacher lol
Lol so much for not being a trainer lol great. Video and keep on gear jammin
Lol
@@truckingwithschmidt7120 if want to have your mind blown 🤯watch how jamaicans shift their trucks on RUclips 😄
@@truckingwithschmidt7120 a gear jammer is a driver who accelerates and decelerates rapidly.
I hear that
Your shifting is a thing of beauty…. Gentle hands……. I’m not a driver but you make it look very graceful.
I was a very young teen-ager when my Grandpa was trying to teach me how to drive an old two stick Lincoln log truck.I asked how do you know when to shift.His anwers started with a very cantankerous laugh.It's like being with a women,listen to her.She will tell you what she like's,and how she likes it.Then do what she likes,and keep doing what she likes.It was alittle bit of time before I truely new what he meant.But when I finally new what he meant.Ha ha.I called him up right away and said Grampa What you said about shifting gears makes sense now.Grandpa erupted into the best laugh I've ever.Kurt thank you so very much for bringing back great memories.That was along time ago,but it seems like yesterday.Great job and thanks again.
Lolol that had to be a funny call.
Thank you for sharing your grampa story with us my friend. He sounds like a good man and you clearly adored him. It brought a smile to my face and I'm sure many others as well
Ol' truck sounds good Jake,take care be safe out there! Remember folks these drivers are out there making a living keeping AMERICA stocked. The one thing they need from us,PATIENCE!
I love that you split your gears the pro way, and not the lazy way.
there is literally no reason to do it that way. the gears dont change until the truck moves into neutral
I’ve been driving 12 years. But damn. You can drive. I’m humbled
My Dad is the only other person I know that shifts that smooth. He taught me that you handle the shifter as gently as you would hold a baby bird.
@@Leveraction-xr4uz none taken. You're correct as well, but when I was learning, I was a 14 year old girl. My Dad wouldn't ever say that to me. Was using his instruction until I retired 2 years ago.
My Dad told me the same thing except he said a boob!
This made me laugh "as you would hold a baby bird" im 57 yrs old ive driven dam near every kind of setup. I dont think in all that time ive held a baby bird. One thing i noticed when he was driving" ive heard this saying save your brakes and shift it in neutral save your fuel. There is a reason why you should never do this. In my professional opinion "jake brakes" should never be used on flat grades thats not what a jake brake is designed to do. No matter what drivers tell you brakes today are meant to last a longer time. A jake brake to most drivers is like buying a a car thats loud no matter what they tell you its because they think the noise is cool. The idea of saving brakes is nonsense. Unless you do alot of in town shifting you are never using that much fuel to downshift. coasting is never a good idea
@billyy7960 I drive a pete that has the jake built into the Gas pedal. You have to use it🤷♂️. I prefer our Mac though that has a 2 stage jake you have to manually engage.
My Dad did that trip with swinging meat 45 years ago. Thanks Dad , I never lacked for nothing. Not I thing . Love your channel.
The sound of that CAT with open pipes is just ♫ to the ears, tx for the video, thought low low and reverse only had 2 gears each. Another lesson learned.
Kurt
Good afternoon
Thank You for sharing your passion
Yes driving an 18 wheeler smoothly is some kind of art
This driver is a true pro when it comes to shifting. I like how nice and easy he goes thru the gears.
Great video Kurt! It's not always easy to explain all the details of the "art of shifting " and you did a great job! Also thank you for sharing your family time and events in some of your videos. I think it helps folks who drive like us to remember to keep that healthy "balance" of life in and out of the truck for our mental well being, if that makes any sense 😆. As always, safe travels and God Bless!
Makes sense to me, thank you
Thanks for the gear changing lesson Kurt , i have driven a 9 speed RR , ide love to have a go at an 18 now after your video , you explained how it operates like a true professional , who takes pride in your job and your truck and gear , a true asset to any
employer ,
Take care .
Your correct teaching someone is hard because i’am like you I hear the engine , not watching the tack , it all boils down to just learning by doing it . Don’t panic . Sound is great 👍 good job getting to Buds Game
2 things good sir. slow and steady 👌
1- cats are a blessing with gear changes
2- gear changes are very simple with no weight and flat country
great info!! smooth& easy listening and feeling the truck without looking!! You and family have a great weekend!!!
Thank God for semi drivers. I couldn’t do it. It takes a person that I am not. And we need food! So thank you!
Thank you so much man! I honestly learned a lot from this video of yours. The way you drive is just so smooth and you don’t put any stress on your rig whatsoever. Love it
Without a doubt you are still one of the smoothest gear shifters I have ever seen!!! Definitely finesse and experience!!!! Family time worked in while on the job!!! Freaking awesome!!! Keep doing what you do Kurt!!! You definitely inspire lots of subscribers out there!!! See you and Opie on the next one 😎✌️
Thank you for the kind words
Cut threw like a hot knife in butter. Perfect
Really Great video, thank you for making it. You really took the time to explain everything you need to do to learn to shift the correct way which is easy on the truck and the driver. I still can't wrap my head around the 24 gears you're talking about but Great job explaining everything. It's always good to learn from a true professional like yourself. Thanks again for the video. 👍🙂👌👏
Your engine and tranny combo and the way you drive and shift up and down is the best for your truck and the most stress free way to do it, your one of the real good ones out there, as the old timers go you'll be one down the road 15, 20 years
All the trucks I've driven have had 9 or 10 speeds, this is the first video I've seen where you actually explain it. Thank you, first time watching the channel.keep it up! Nice co- driver😉
Congratulations on the win little bud, thank for the info on shifting 1st class, I know there alot of guys shift the 18 differently. U n the family have a good weekend
I for one appreciate you're efforts and tuition.thanks man.
You’re the man I’ll probably never achieve your level of smoothness! Good Job!
Thanks Kurt, You are still the smoothest gear changer I've ever seen, and I've seen a lot. Well Done Mate
Thank you for the shifting video. Learn something new every time!
Glad to see you did make it back for Troy's game. I'm sure it means a lot to him. 10 (5 high/ 5 low) was enough shifting for me 30+ years ago. I have enough now with my 5 speed car. As always, I enjoy the info. and the nice ride along. Safe travels. God bless.
Great video. Yeah it has been covered ad nauseum maybe but watching you shift made an impression on me. I love that emphasis on being smooth and taking care of your truck. Well Done.
Very smooth Mr.Schmidt.Glad to see there's still a few of us around.
Kurt your shifting is top notch my guy I'm impressed you make it look like a walk in the park
Wow! Just WOW! I Didn't know how complex and complicated shifting a 18 speed was. Kudos....
I love your style shifting you are speaking truth. When I taught my grandson how to shift I also added how you can shift without using the clutch. That I think is a good way to teach them to be gentle because it has to be completely lined up therefore going slow and easy.
Kurt, those are the drivers that destroy transmissions, rear ends, and power dividers. They don’t know how to respect the truck or either just stupid.👍👍👍
I really enjoyed this video on your shifting procedure. The first car i drove was my dads 1958 ford fairlane with a 3 on the tree. He always told me to ease it into each gear and listen to the speed of the engine as i shifted. The biggest truck i ever drove was a U.S. Army duece and a half when i was stationed at Ft. Riley Kansas. It was 1972 and i had just returned from my year in Vietnam as a gunner on 4.2 inch mortars. Driving that duece and a half is a good memory for me.
I bet it is a good one. And thanks for protecting us citizens.
Hi!, Kurt & Opie. Well, Bobby really enjoyed the shifting lesson. He remembers running a 7, 9, 10, 13, 18, 4x3, and 5x4. He believes the same way that you do in shifting nice and slow. Finesse means everything when getting the truck down the road. Tell Troy congratulations on another win. God Bless all of you. Stay safe and well. Oh, it was nice to see that your mother made it out to the match.
Will do and those 5*4 had to of been tricky
18 is the most useful 4 heavy hauls!!🤗👌
Woohoo! Way to go Bud, undefeated so far that's awesome. Credited to a Great Coach of course.😉😉
Thanks Kurt for being patient
with your inquisitive viewers, don't forget " imitation is the highest form of flattery ".👍👍😁
Stay safe Schmidt family and God bless. 🙏🙏😊🇨🇦
I've been watching some shifting videos myself because hopefully next month I'll be going to trucking school. But seeing your videos and FSC speed shops videos hearing you both shift it sounds so smooth, and both sound so good. Great video.
Good to hear and thank you.
Ok, that was an excellent explanation and video on shifting an 18 speed.
I got a chuckle out of you taking it out of the gate on the splits. I bought a Pete with a super ten and could not get a smooth shift until I pulled it out of the gate on the splits. Now I shift it just like a regular ten except I take it out of the gate and then put it right back in the same hole. Smooth as silk. Great video!
Afternoon Kurt, sitting here on my Saturday morning watching the video, great job and watching you shift causes me to get better at my craft. Want to always learn and get better, thanks again. Have a great weekend.
Thank you you as well.
Great video, beautiful exhaust note on First Class, great 18speed tutorial 👍👍
You sir are the smoothest shifter I’ve ever seen. And oh, by the way I was taught the same way you were taught lol. Great video, thanks for sharing.
Thank you
you are the smoothest i've ever seen keep up the good work.
I know to you it's a job, but to me it would be an experience, my dad drove a 18 wheeler driving a mack, went with him once and that was my choice living. But couldn't due to a seizure disorder. Thanks for the ride and hope to ride again. Thanks again, James Lee
Love the way you shift. I never understood the speed shifting. I was taught start slow stop slow. Shift when she is ready.
Thank you for the shifting video, now I know how you do it, smooth like butter !
My phone broke I’m glad I’m back watching your videos. .
Thank you For showing us NON-Drivers on how to shift ...I think it is pretty neat watching you drive and shift thru those gears
Welcome and thank you for washing
I agree with you 100% remember when I first got my CDL and thought I was cool to gear jam and take off fast and years go by and then became an owner operator and grew wise quick and drive it like you do take ur time there’s nothing to prove to anyone
Thanks for the info, my brother in law is just getting into the trucking business. I'll pass this along.
This truck, & the way you drive it reminds me so much of my Dad's last truck before he retired & how cool calm & collected he was as he pedalled it between Sydney & Brisbane every night doing Express Parcel Freight. His was a Western Star 66" bunk Long Bonnet 4972, C-15 (600hp), 18 Speed Eaton (Road Ranger) & 3.55:1 Diffs. The way First class comes on boost & sings reminds me so much of this old truck. And of course the beauty of a an 18 speed is you can use them all, or just split the top box & drive it like a 13 speed, or not split them at all & drive it like a 9 speed.
Western stars are a beautiful truck
Kurt that is the best explanation I have heard great job
Thank you
Awesome video Kurt . I have a 18 speed in my 96 Pete, with a 3406 B. I love it. Smooth shifting man 😃
Love your dog and video is how a professional do it God bless you
Great Video can't get over how much you look like my brother-and-law
Very good video, I understood all explanation and for me other thing important, was understood in english. In the near future, I will be drive in USA/Canadá. Thanks a lot!!!!!
Congratulations on the game i have a grandson that is wanting to play and he’s about old enough. God bless
Love the smooth and easy shifting, that trucks got it easy, you don't make it work hard, I'm the same way, treat it like a woman, awesome!
The 18 speed is not an 18 speed because it has 3 reverse gears. It's 18 because you can split the first 5 low range gears equaling 10 then split the 4 high range gears equaling 8, for a total of 18. If it was the way you explained it then a 15 speed would really be a 20 speed
You could ramble all day but you are very giving with your knowledge. Thanks for another great video. Take care mate
Catch you tomorrow morning
Thank you
Smooth operator, comes to mind......👍👍👍👍
FYI, the number of speeds refers to forward speeds only, does not include reverse. I do agree that you are one of the smoothest drivers I've seen in a long time! Have Fun and Happy Motoring!!
It's 18 gears, yes reverse is a gear
@user-qv1wu8qq4r The 18 speed transmission is laid out in an 'H' pattern. The easiest way to become familiar with the 18 speed is to practice shifting in an H pattern. The driver uses second, third, fourth, and fifth, then splits up into high range and then shift the H pattern again for sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth gear
@user-qv1wu8qq4r those are f
Gears duh
@user-qv1wu8qq4r I literally drive a 18 speed 379 and I haul heavy there's 18 gears I use then all them
@user-qv1wu8qq4r Thanks for clarifying this! Happy motoring!!
Good job kurt. I recently had a "new" remanufactured 13 Eaton fail. No 13's are available so we're going with an 18. Your video will get me off on the right foot. I'm old school like yourself,easy in easy out. Coast to a stop. I heard the out of control sermon also. Be safe
You so funny I like that last part very good Vibes thou keep it up.
Thanks to your subs. for putting up with us new subs. that learned something. Thanks Kurt.
They are good people.
Nice shifting , thats way I've done many years we had 2 sticks what learned on , dont need to jamb gears and heavy throttle make truck jump each gear ,your the best I've seen shifting and low RPMS , I drove W 900 had cat ran it like you do , hey sorry I tried writing book , take care always
Nice job Kurt explaining an 18 speed. I've driven two trucks with an 18 and loved both. I'm with you slamming gears has always bothered me. Easy does it every time. You and Opie truck it safe
Thank you for training video. I would be grinding them and finding them. Stay safe.
Been around trucking going on 50 years now and I have never seen a smoother shift. Been watching you a while and have never seen you miss a gear, grind or jam. Love your family life balance too. and any video with dogs is a born winner.
Thank you
today was my first day back in a manual truck since i have taken my cdl test last year in april in a 10 speed. i have to learn to drive an 18 speed and man i messed up so bad pretty sure my trainer wanted to throw me out of the truck 😂 i never thought id have to resort to watching a youtube video to figure out how to drive an 18 speed honestly. i’m only 19 and i’m thinking i should go back to my old job with all automatics before i try out this big boy job again when i turn 21. thanks for the vid man i’m actually taking notes for tomorrow when i try again
NICE engine sound🎶🇯🇵😊👍
Great video ! That ending clip was hilarious 😂😂
My friend your. shifting is much like your personality. Smooth, never in a hurry, and easy on the equipment. 50 years ago I had a 5 and 4 transmission. Both hands off the wheel at times.
I've heard that, I've never drivin one
Very cool. Definitely takes some gettin use to.
I don't feel it was long-winded or confusing-ng at all. I learned a lot, thanks. That idea of moving briefly into neutral when you split makes a lot of sense, it lets the splitting mechanism inside the trans do its work under no-load conditions ... smart. Thanks for a valuable lesson.
Thank you so much Mr. Kurt! So wild that you don't use the clutch, Interesting. I appreciate the video, Best regards, Chuck
Now there's how it's better "splitted" properly, with the lever out & then back into the higher gear vs just flip the splitter switch & manipulate the rpm & let it pop into the next higher gear. 👍
My old man trained me on a super 10 manually splitting as you do here ( with the lever out in neutral) & I figured the 13 & 18 speeds on my own. (Was easy transition).
Enjoyed the vid thank you . 👍
Hearing you talk shifting never gets old. Just like watching & listening to you row gears never gets old. You're smoother than a fresh jar of Skippy, and I love how you respect your chariot.
FWIW, in terms of numbering, here's how it was explained to me by an Eaton-Fuller engineer. I think the confusion comes from the three ways the terms low & high come into play (Low gear, Low & High Side, Lo & Hi for each gear).
Reverse Lo
Reverse Hi
1 = Low Lo
2 = Low Hi
LOW SIDE:
3 = 1 Lo
4 = 1 Hi
5 = 2 Lo
6 = 2 Hi
7 = 3 Lo
8 = 3 Hi
9 = 4 Lo
10 = 4 Hi
HIGH SIDE:
11 = 5 Lo
12 = 5 Hi
13 = 6 Lo
14 = 6 Hi
15 = 7 Lo
16 = 7 Hi
17 = 8 Lo
18 = 8 Hi
That's a good explanation thank you
magnificent truck schmitt u look after it matey
Thanks for the shifting video, I’m in the category of not knowing. Cheers!
Went through my 10 month College Credited CDL Course in a W900 18sp.
We'd go into low or high then split, lift the peddle & back on the peddle then you was in your gear.
Then I moved on to a 389 with the 18sp.
Your correct, drove it the same. Nice & easy into each gear. 🤟
I Love your Blues & Rock music.
Awesome truck 😍
Love your German Shepherd. I have two; a male and a female.
Love it, still in Ellsworth, I thought I saw you go by. Keep it up
Good job teaching, i think i learned something
Ralph from Cali, bin driving truck 26 years and I couldn’t agree with you more the truck will go into gear just have the rite RPM’s and be gentle. But I must say I drive an automatic now and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. No more pain and swollen nickel on my shifting hand. Be safe have a good weekend.
Nice video and a very good explanation 👍🏻.
Love your. Ids.
Amazing as always thanks God bless
Thank you for explaining the shifting. A lot of information. I'm a little less confused (but still confused...lol)
Congrats to Bud and his team (Warden too!) for their win!
Stay safe!
Ya im a confusing kind of teacher
@@truckingwithschmidt7120 it's not that you're a confusing teacher. Like you said in the beginning there's more than 1 gear within a gear and all that split stuff lost me but it's ok 😂 since you know what your doing. You make it look easy and smooth shifting through those gears!
Floating gears, LOVE IT,
Sweet ride brother
Man the Big Kitty sure sounds sweet👍🏿
That was like glass. I would love to learn to shift like that 👍
Sorry you had cover this again, but it was very beneficial for me. I went to CDL school almost twenty years ago, great refresher. The for me is being patient as you grab the next gear at the proper rpm/ground speed.
Thanks for watching
Agree that a lot of rookies think that just because it's a truck you need to manhandle the shifter, basically doing chin-ups on it, but it's all about treating the equipment right. You treat it right and it will do the same for you. For me, I'm a long time heavy hauler and I think the Eaton 18 speed is the best shifting transmission on the planet, and there are times that even with my big HP I'll need to use every gear. I'm running a new Pete 567 daycab set-back tri-drive with a Cummins X15 Performance 605/2050, and it's an expensive piece of equipment built to do a specific job, so I treat it as if I bought it. Really nice tutorial for the guys who will actually listen and watch it, but as I'm sure you know, a lot of these rooks can't drive anything but an automatic and can't back up straight for 100 yards.
Thank you and it definitely keeps equipment going
@@truckingwithschmidt7120 That it does, like the saying goes, "if the wheels ain't turning, it ain't earning". Trucks have made me a lot of $$$, so it pays to take care of the equipment.
This beyond smooth wow
