I learned how to drive in a 10-speed International, but over the past 4 years since I got my CDL every company I've worked for has automatics. I have what many call an automatic handicap smh. Lost out on a lot of jobs in the oilfield because of that.

My work truck is a 21’ kenworth t880, before this it was an 07’ w900L, and before that, it was a 21’ freightliner 114sd, all 18 speeds at all different power outputs. 470 for the freightliner, 510 for the t880 and 600 in the w9 all rocking the 18 speeds. I haul rock at my max gross of 46,500kgs/102,300Lbs multiple times a day. Every trucks setup requires different driving styles. I can only take off in low-low or low-hi in the t880, but can walk from a dead stop in 2nd the 114. The w9 will do 2nd. I never do this and always leave in either low-low or low-hi anyways, but unless I’m in the muck or in a turned position, I am able to comfortably pick whole gears until 6 hole and split 6L to 6H except for in the 114. It is almost necessary to split from 4L to 4H. Really comes down to clutch and power setup.
    Good video man

Hey this is great! Fascinating. I knew about the range selector but had no idea about the hi/low splitter. But I’ve never even been in a truck so I’m just curious. Maybe a stupid question, but since it wasn’t covered in your otherwise thorough video: those trucks have a clutch like a manual transmission car, correct? I’m assuming you’re pressing the clutch to shift between each gear, just not the hi/low split? Thanks!

I am curious. If you are hauling, are you able to skip from 5L to 6L or do you have to go through 5H?

@@primecon9547 depends on the speeds and rpm, you can definitely skip once you know what your doing

What's the reason you run through low and high split in every single gear? Is your truck down on power? I'm in a T880 18 speed and my normal gross is 140,000lbs (super B's). When fully loaded its lo low, 1 low, 2 low, 3 low, 4 low, 5 low, 5 high, 6 low, 6 high etc I only split high range. I'd never make most left hand filter turns if I went through the entire low range box like that as I'd have changed gear 9 times before I even hit 24kph.

@Jeff Jefe that's not safe for going up and down steep grades. You should do another video like this but using the clutch up and down hills.🔥

Man only negative thing here is how early you are pre selecting... once you flip the range or gear splitter you engage it... you can actually feel it grinding... its terrible for the components.
dont get me wrong.. I also pre select.. however it is right as I want the selection... not 10 seconds before
