    An 18 speed is also very handy when pulling a smooth bore tanker. The short shifting helps mitigate the surge that comes with a partially loaded tank.

      Learning how to float through the gears as he did is actually pretty easy. It's a rhythm and you can pick it up pretty quickly. It's the downshifting that is harder to master. These transmission's are not synchronized. So you you can't push in the clutch and just drop it in a lower gear. So typically you only split 18th back to 17th and then you drop a full gear at a time. So you bring engin down to about a 1000 RPM's it's 450 RPM's between gears so when you come out of gear to down shift you have to rev the engine up to about 1450 RPM'S before it will go in gear. Your RPM'S have to match the speed for that gear

    • @KaiserBruh
      @KaiserBruh 2 года назад +15

      yea id say its way easier to float gears in a semi than in a car bc if the synchros. it took so many weeks of careful attempts in my pickup to float her gears. i floated gears in a semi the first time i ever tried.
      i promise its the easiest thing ever you have so much room to shift its so nice.

    • @KaiserBruh
      @KaiserBruh 2 года назад +13

      @@anthonyaubuchon765 yea exactly it. upshift floating? the easiest thing. downshift? floating? thats a true challenge for a man of experience. its hard enough to downshift with the clutch in, with the rev matching and all that but my grandfather makes downshift floating look like childs play

    • @danielread7642
      @danielread7642 2 года назад +4

      Not really once you master upshifting and matching the revs to the gear ots easey down shifting is a little harder but the truck will tell you when you can shift lol

      Well there is an old saying that goes: “if you bought it, a truck brought it” it’s crazy how easy it is to overlook the fact that trucks keep the stores everyone shops at stocked with product for consumers to purchase. The people who look down upon truck drivers and tradesmen fail to realize that nobody else will keep stores stocked or at least as efficiently as truck drivers and nobody else will fix their toilets but plumbers when they break it by putting a turd too big down there. Perhaps if people and kids these days are exposed and shown the purpose and importance of these roles, and what these people go and can go through on a daily basis, not only would there be more of an understanding and more respect of how essential these people are, but maybe there wouldn’t be such a big shortage of new people in these industries in the United States.

    • @charliecollings2295

It’s all down to matching engine speed with that of the output shaft for the desired gear, assuring that the output shaft and desired gear are spinning at the same speed, allowing for a smooth gear change. Manufacturers: How many gears and gauges you want?
    Truck companies: Yes

    • @Vickvineager
      @Vickvineager 3 года назад +7

      He’s got an o/o (owner operator) spec’d truck. Your average fleet truck like say swift doesn’t have all those gauges because those extra gauges add up when buying the truck. Over the span of 100+ trucks, not getting the extra gauges saves money. But on the other hand those extra gauges do help you keep an eye on your axle temps, braking pressure turbo boost, egt, fuel pressure, trans temp. Items you should be in the know about in case your starting to have trouble while driving down the road.
      So if you hear about a truck being o/o spec’d chances are it would have that many gauges in said truck verses when someone says a fleet spec’d truck. There are many differences between the two but from inside his cab it’s easy to see his is o/o spec’d.

What I’ve been told by people is if you can drive a 13 you can drive an 18 only difference is you can’t split the low side of the gears on a 13 speed. Spend a couple days behind the wheel and you’ll get the hang of it. Now the 18 speeds are fun!
