Wowww That Really Isn’t That Hard I really touught it was harder than that i heard you can even drive as you driving a 10 speed but only until 8th gear idk if thats true
@Perseus1275 tbh it’s a whole lot easier to shift a 13 speed than it is a 10. Most of the time you’re going to start in 4th, so you go 4-5 then flip the switch for the high stage and do all your highs and lows. But once you get up to speed and your on the highway, climbing a hill you have more control and power. Once you start to climb a hill with a 10 speed, you need to: push in the clutch, take the gear out of its position, give the engine some throttle to drop the gear. With a 13 speed you can shift to the low gear while applying throttle and simply release the throttle to go into 10-low. You still have to use the same technique as a 10 speed when going from 10 low to 9 high but not as often which smooths out your ride.
You actually explained it very well, I really want to learn how to go thru the gears while driving down the road, I’ve moved a 13 speed T680 but it was around the yard because the tech that was woking on it didn’t know how to drive manual and even then it felt really cool to move a truck like that
As a rookie i drove a 13 speed kay double ya in a concrete mixer. Fun times and also nail biters.. but now being experienced for 7 years I get a smile on my face remembering.
2 things I loved about driving was shifting and backing up. During the day I worked the yard in a shunt truck and the afternoon was spent on the big city roads delivering loads or picking up usually either hanging meat or boxed meat. That boxed meat was heavy but kept me in shape. Too old for that now. Excellent video
You did a better job explaining than my brother-in-law, who spent way too much time either laughing or swearing at me. 13-speed and a ten-yard dump back in the day.
I get overwhelmed with information really easily, but this felt totally comfortable to me! I just play truck sims and simply assumed the gearshift was massive, but now I know it's a layered thing
I had to slipseat into a 13-speed on one day's notice. I had never driven a 13-speed before, only 8s, 9s, 10s and Super 10s. I watched this video the night before getting into a 13-speed for the first time, and I was able to drive it with no problems. Thanks Alex!
That's interesting. I'd never become a trucker but that gave me more of an understanding on how a 13 speed works. 1st thru 4th, 5th, 5th high, 6th low, 6th high, etc. I never knew what high and low gears meant and thought there was actually 13 gears
So I've been out of trucking about 1.5 years went through a rough time in life Yada yada...but I just got my cdl transferred to OK, got my medical card I was worried I might of forgot how to float, but watching your video brought back alot of memories very informative thanks buddy.
Best way I learned is to be gentle with both the throttle and the gear shift. Just let the throttle float down until you can gently pull out of gear, don't let off the throttle all at once. The trick is to eliminate any pressure on the actual gears inside the transmission so they're not binding and can easily disengage.
I also noticed how he floated his gears. This was by far the best explanation that I've found on the topic of shifting. The only way to drive a big rig.
Video was perfect. I just talked to my boss today about getting into a 13 speed brand new truck, & it will be my first manual. Thank you for this video bro
Best way to learn is just to experience it. A 13 speed works in an H pattern and to split the gears, it brings your RPM’s about halfway down in your sweet spot when you put it in the high of that gear. With a 10 speed, you have to pull it clear over to the left and back to put it into 6th gear. Your low range only helps to gain momentum from a dead stop.
When you downshift, blip the throttle to get the RPM where it should be when the transmission shifts into the lower gear. It helps if you had a motorcycle at some point when you were a kid. My first car was a standard transmission with synchromesh gearing and my GSXR (sportbike)also required good shifting skills. Kids today have little opportunity to learn to shift in their cars, so taking the CDL is their first time.
Not many people knows this, but if you put it into low gear, while the ranger is up, you can use it as a 4th gear. It's very useful when going around a corner and you're too lazy to flip the ranger down and back up again to go into 4th. Or you can go from 3rd to Low, then use the splitter to go into 4th hi. This really changes the way you drive the truck
Black "needle" is the Range selector. Red "needle" is the Splitter. The gear you are trying to call 12th is 8 Lo. Use to be 8 Direct before the Direct and Overdrive splits had to be dumbed down to Lo and Hi.
I thought the splitter in the up position was direct and the splitter down is low. Because how I picture it all working, is the auxiliary box is just a reducer, (splitter switch down activates it.) and the splitter up is using main box ratios with the auxiliary box in a direct or pass through state. ?
i don't know if we have the 13 speed/ shift in sweden but i was so stressed about the gear part of my training and now i feel calmer. like it's just a much bigger version of a car, so thank you for that
Can you please do another video downshifting? Downshifting to come to a complete stop and downshifting to come to a slow roll? I can shift well, but for some reason I struggle to down shift
Downshifting is more difficult than upshifting when first learning to float gears…most people get the upshifting nailed down before really getting downshifting mastered.
I ain’t gonna lie I was confused at the beginning but once you were explaining as you drove it made a lot more sense. I’m going to reserve a spot in class to get my CDL hopefully in February, ready to start driving.
Really? Back in the 80's I drove city busses that were automatics but never heard of trucks that were automatic. Do you have any idea why the US and Europe are flipped? In the US there're many, many people who have never been exposed to manual transmission cars. I prefer a manual on open roads but in city traffic an automatic is much easier.
You nailed it man!! Explained it in simple working man's language, i have watched some video's done by experts 🤔 and I'm none the wiser, feel i could drive one of these transmissions after 5mins watching you
At first was confusing on after 4th gear, then to go to 5 low, was the needle, 5 high red needle, and so on. Was better understanding when you got the rig out on the road...THANK YOU for this! NOW I understand even better!
The reality of the situation is you don't even need to drive it like a 13 speed. Just an 8 speed. 1,2,3,,4...splitter, 5,6,7,8 and then when ur over 60mph on the highway, flip the red switch, let off the gas, and then accelerate again, puts it in the final gear. When slowing down off highway, let off gas, flip switch back, then accelerate, moves it back to 8th and you can downshift like normal etc. That's the way my instructor taught me.
I learned on that exact transmission. I was doing dirtwork building an offramp, the one and only time i snapped the driveline... lol that was fun. The road is calling me back after a 12 year vacation.
Biggest vehicle I've driven was a 5spd 5ton so I always assumed semi's were the same with 13 gears/slots to go through and I always wondered how they kept track of which gear they were in 🤣. This seems much easier and manageable 👍
Great video your truck runs out at 1500 .as a older big rig long distance driver I will tell my experience with a low rpm engine it's not fun to drive it will put you to sleep 😴 and can get you someone hurt 🤕 it's not that low end engine torque isn't cool on slow rpm engine but you need get out of the way and let's go engine rpm and upper HP if you have the engine set up to 2300. it's a night and day difference and excitement to drive 😉 the engine will last longer save fuel ⛽ you can skip 2 to 3 gears at a time and when empty that's when saving money really shows up 😊 plus it will blow pass 80% of average rigs 😮 God bless 😎 ken
i learned the 18 speed in a truck simiulator. Once i learned i could float gears i was so much happier. I love watching people explain how to float and double clutch gears, not sure why, but i do. that was a good demonstration. im curious if you were heavy in this video? in the simulator when im light, i start in 3rd, float to 5th, float to 7th until im up to speed. i only use 1st, 2nd, and 4th when heavy. Do you ever shift this way in those situations or do you always go in order regardless?
If you’re at the right speed then yeah I suppose you could skip gears. In my rather limited experience using a manual, it was easier to skip gears when I downshifted. Going from 60mph at 13th gear I could slow down in neutral and put it a different gear depending on the speed. Didn’t do it much mind you, just if I ever lost my gear when downshifting one gear at a time 😅

It was cool. I already know how, but please show the downshift process for those who don't. Even on a trans with full synchro, there's generally a bit of wear, so double-clutching makes life easier when you know what it's about. Cheers.
Seems pretty straight forward, a lil hard to see how you were doing the gas pedal, but it sounded like just goose it, let off gas, shift, then back in.. Got it. Thanks bud
No shot you recorded this on my highway (I work for CalTrans). I know exactly where you were lol. That's the end of my northern boundary. Hopefully you're one of "them", but thank you guys for moving over for us. Only the semi trucks pulling big trailers actually get over. The other heavy trucks just don't care and will stay in the lane closest to where we are, creating a more dangerous environment for us.
The ability to float gears saved me when I lost the hydraulics in my clutch in an old Civic. I drove about 30 miles including freeways. The catch was I had to use the starter in 1st gear to get the car moving.
I understood most of the things you mentioned, my uncle showed me today and it was essentially what you described. He put me to practice and the truck did stall and I let my nerves get to me but it was my first time. I’m sure as I gain more experience I won’t have to worry anymore about worrying hehe. 😅
You made it easy, I already knew how to drive manual cars but definitely not trucks. It's basically the same process except you do not the clutch very often and more gears..
Just like driving your manual car without the clutch. I did that all the time back in the day. It's something you have to just do a few times to get the feel for it. But once you've got it, you'll never forget.
Thank you, I've always been wondering how to shift in trailer truck. This video makes clear of it. I wish I had a chance to test drive a trailer one day.
Great video! Right now my truck is being upgraded from a 10 speed to a 13 and also gear ratio upgrade on my differentials. Thanks for the video it will help.
Interesting how this was recommended a day after I had a conversation with a trucker buddy about how shifting in a semi works and how it's different from a car.
In my 8th month experience in driving car I have drive a lot petrol cars and other many diesel cars with synchronized manual gearbox. Every time who I want to start my driving the car from parking position first I found my throttle and after release the clutch slowly that exact my teacher told me! Now the floating manual gearbox the clutch you have only start the semi truck from the beginning point, I know does works the floating gears! I know the semi truck is very differently from the Regular car. I have experience only with manual gearbox!
As a older long distance big rig driver heavy hauler I'm telling you take these shifts videos extremely light they are dangerous and can get someone hurt 🤕 what they show you is flat land and no threats if you think I'm lying 🤥 see if can find any videos of someone fully loaded going up a 12% up grade hills or down grade shifting gears without a clutch especially this guy with a engine factory set at 1500. Danger # 1 going down hill if you get out of gear and no matching rpm to get back into gear now you have a runaway danger # 2 up hill at 12% if you didn't double clutch it will not go back in gear now a rollback potential😮
There are two types of 13 speed transmissions. One has a black splitter which splits the lower 5 gears and one is red which splits the upper 5 gears. Construction vehicles like dump trucks tend to have the black splitter for low range splitting. The 18 speeds have the blue splitter.
I’ve been watching youre channel for a while and you’re socials this was awesome man! I go to school soon and have only driven automatics. I appreciate this content bro 🤙

How your driving? I just drove for the first time it was kinda rough
Honestly. The best tutorial vid I saw on this. Thanks man.
He made it the best way to understand or get the feel and i hope that truck that he demonstrated on was his new truck
When bro said hes gonna put the gopro in his mouth you know he went hard in the video thumbs up champ🏆🏆
Thank you I just got a 13 speed and had no idea how to drive it. 😅 thank you so much great instructions.❤
Awesome video, this explained a lot. Heading back to the oilfield and they said they are buying me a 13 speed. This video helped me understand
I like your comprehensive explanation. Absolutely understood. Very very useful.
I have only driven 10 speed in two years with class A this looks easier. Thank You.
ive been down mt view more times than any other road in my life, crazy to find local vloggers
Perfect demonstration. Perfect. Perfect.
Every video like that gives me a tiny little bit more respect for those truckers overpassing at 0.1 km/h higher speed.
One of the only videos to show how. Everyone else thinl we can see them shifting and clutching
THIS WAS SOO EASY THANKS BRO.. WATCHING FROM CARIBBEAN
This helps me with American Truck Simulator 😂😂😂 thanks ❤
I love the 13 speed, once you get the kick of it is fun to drive.
Switching to an automatic transmission is the best decision for your quality of life. The manual mode in my Cascadia is perfect.
Plan on watching this every day for a couple years till I get confident to get ready to take the test
Very nice informative video, thank you !! 👋
The 18 speeds have the blue splitter.
for me particularly is hard because I don't know how to stick shift. I rather drive a automatic semi truck. you have a wonderful family alex
thank you, best video on shifting a 13 speed, very helpful for me bcause im a new driver❤
I’ve been watching youre channel for a while and you’re socials this was awesome man! I go to school soon and have only driven automatics. I appreciate this content bro 🤙
Tryna get my CDL so I can getta job with the city and I have to learn a 13 spd or 18spd. But I will never use the 18 so I’m tryna learn 13. This was super helpful to understand how all the gears work and where they’re located.
You showed it better then anyone else on here from videos I was looking at thanks
I appreciate you🙏🏾 taking the time to make the video and break it down you made it look easy 🚛
Thanks for clearing this up. I wasn’t sure if you needed to take it out of gear and put it back in when you use the red switch
Learned a lot man. it's cool flicking that lil red jwnt can give extra juice and carry yo 6 str8 to a 6 High.
I'm 47 years old and I have never in my life successfully driven a manual transmission of any kind, but this seemed simple enough.
