13 years of driving around Chicago. My advice, do it fast like a bandaid. Just make the turn using the entire road. And I mean all of it. But do it quick enough that no one even has time to cut you off on the inside. Works like a charm.

  • @a-bar-b5196
    @a-bar-b5196 4 месяца назад +2

30+ years. Angle into the intersection at the light so your trailer is close to the curb (so a car can’t sneak in there) and your truck is to the farthest left you can go. Then follow his instructions making the turn. Go straight out then turn hard right. With a 53 foot trailer today you might want to move slide trailer axles/tandems all the way to the front. Hope this helps anybody today.

When I drove OTR I started out on the east coast and I'm from the midwest. Never drove a rig before and I learned driving a rig really quick... Lol. That east coast sucks and those 4 wheelers are nuts. Watch those mirrors at all times, especially on right turns. What I learned was to hug that curb with the trailer keep those idiots from trying to get past you during a turn. On right tight turns I turned into the curb, then swung left just enough to make room for the turn keeping my trailer on the right as far as possible. If you can drive that damn east coast you can drive just about anywhere. Good luck to all you new drivers, stay safe and watch those mirrors and keep them clean. Your mirrors are your best friend.

His advices are good but never think the turn that you already know it woul be always the same like he said never take your eyes away from everything while performing a turn. I woul say never move faster than you can see.

Better to go more wide than be too tight... obviously after making sure the lane or lanes your gonna use aren’t occupied.

I know that sounds safe but you are pretty much getting into 4 intersections instead of just 1 .. so I feel like it would be maybe more dangerous.. I’ve driven a bit in cities.. Dallas .. LA .. Salt Lake City .. Chicago.. Portland.. and they’re all different but I realized that a lot of people see you and try to get out of your way or give you space to get by safely too .. or you can wait and turn when it’s safe to go ..

It works great but just gotta be cautious as some top corners are tricky or at an obtuse angle which means turns even later or narrow so you gotta turn left then right

Stay straight turn late...and get all the real estate you can in setting up before you turn and when you see the opportunity...also if you see you're blocked sit still with your signal on honk and motion that guy stopped across the intersection to come on out, you have to wait for him in tight situations sometimes, no other way to make some of those right handers especially in older cities. I've gotten out with the hazards on before to splain it... everyone can wait, or you will twist metal and really screw up everything.

I was the car that took the inside one time, for the right turn. As soon as I was making my move three different other drivers started honking at me. Fortunately I stopped and let the trucker do his thing, taking up the left two lanes and into a single lane on the exit of the turn. All turned out ok and I had to endure some cat calls (stupid #ucker) and nasty looks. It was a tight turn though and the trucker was taking all of the two right lanes at the beginning of the turn which is why I originally ‘thought’ I had the free right. That was 25 years ago and I am still a little more watchful.

Though it depend's on the various truck length's. A forty five foot trailer tandem's track in a turn, eight feet. Meaning when one starts to do a turn the trailer tandem's won't react to the turn for eight feet of travel the steering axle goes. Obviously, shorter or longer trailer's mean's the distance the reaction from the tandems and the steer axle's will change also. Learning how to do a what is referred to as a "BUTTON HOOK" will compensate for the variation.
Doing such during the DLC driving test, is unacceptable. Thus using the shortest trailer one can utilize works. After receiveing the DLC. Doing button hooks, assuming you have praticed, will be come second nature.

10:40 bad advice. It is illegal for anyone to cross the center line, and honking at the car waiting in the oncoming lane to back up puts the car in a dangerous situation if there are other vehicle behind it. Basically if the truck can’t make the turn safely, they need to continue straight and find another way back

    GREAT video 👏👍👍👍(Learned 🧠 ALOT!!)
Just purchased a 24ft Enclosed Trailer (Leaving California).
So this video helped me TREMENDOUSLY (to know how to take/handle corners & turns).
Especially the part about using Google Maps (to “see” your route, before you drive it - BRILLIANT suggestion).
This video (and the Map) will take ALOT of “Fear” 😰 out of my cross-country trip.
    THANKS 😄👍

If I got into trucking I certainly wouldn't go too excessive on the turn or turns just wide enough.

This is a good video, filled with common sense, which isn't. I watched as a trucker suddenly decided to turn right onto Main St. in downtown LA one day. The sidewalk was filled with people waiting for the light. I glanced the right tire start turning right and pushed a little girl and her mom back into the crowd just as the right rear tandem wheels came up on the curb where they'd been. Rank rookie or just incredibly stupid, or both? I'll never know.
