My Dad was Very impressed on how you done that for someone who does not do it for a living!!!!! My loved how you took off and how you did progressive shifting!!! Overall My Dad Loved how you drove !!!
Thanks Ross for explaining in such a clear and understanding way how a 18 speed ROAD RANGER works . If ever i get the chance to have a go at one , your tutorial video on how to operate a 18 speed ROAD RANGER will surely assist me , Take care .
Dude, you just explained the splitter better than any other person or video ever. Been looking for answers on how it's used for ages. (I'm even a heavy vehicle tech and on the Eaton, never understood) (Scania opticruise is a little different kinda but it's auto)
The sound of that beautiful engine going through the gears with the turbo whistling just sounds great, I'm glad I got into the world of trucks. Even though I'm an apprentice diesel mechanic I'd love to do some big rig driving when I get qualified, going for my HC license soon :)
Which red desert are you referring to the big one outside or the smaller one inside, with a bit of water and a packet of seeds you could grow your own veggies on that dash board. Just kidding, that Bull dust gets everywhere, a good instructional video thanks.
Really good vid mate! Other blokes out there with more 'professional' vids haven't conveyed as much info as you have here e.g. the pointers on revs and rev ranges is fantastic. Many thanks mate!!
Hey mate, just wanted to say thanks so much for posting this, out of every other video I watched trying to understand the concept you were the most crystal clear with it! I work on a large scale farm and had to move grain trucks around the place, problem was I made a dogs breakfast pretty quick the first time I tried an 18 speed. Driven plenty of 10-15speed trucks but 18 seemed impossible till I seen this. Cheers !
im starting my HR lessons this week in NT. Got advised to look at some youtube content on RoadRanger gear shifting. This is the easiest to follow so far. Thanks champ
If I can, I'll definitely open a Freight Company here in the Philippines and run Road Trains. Such a badass Kenworth. Thanks for the video, it might be years later but this is still extremely informative in 2020. This is gonna help me a lot in my future endeavors!
Y'all must really like dirt there because its everywhere in the truck! I live in East Texas and we have sand here and some red clay but nothing like west Texas...very hot and dry there and lots more sand. No worries mate! (Love the accent and all the different sayings y'all have)
"it's a little bit heavier that what I thought" he says pulling three trailers with two containers and an excavator. Nice video, and it's demystified the RR gearbox a bit for me, I'm more confident about going for my roadranger ticket when I get my HR license now.
Good vid mate a lot of “professional drivers” have a chip on there shoulder and don’t explain anything good info and visuals 👍🏼 and also probably a lot of guys who think there pro never pulled 3 trailers before ha! 👍🏼
I drove a denning landseer with a 6V92T and a 6 speed spicer and getting used to the clutch brake was the bit that got me as I didn't know what it was but I was able to float the gears fairly quickly so I didn't bother with it.
This primemover has a clutch brake. It's engaged by pressing the clutch pedal to the floor. As the bloke above me correctly pointed out, they're for selecting a gear while stationary.
I've got a 18spd RR in my volvo FH16 with a cummins ISX & I can't workout the clutch brake as I can easily engage 1st & reverse from a total stop with just a half clutch about 70% of the time, but the rest of the time (& for crawler) I have to use the brake to engage them? 🤔🤔
love the vid helps alot considering I live over in the uk closest I get to a truck is virtually atm but its good practice personally 12 and 18 speeds are easiest though I prefer 18
Very good video I'm 14 love truck the gears are confusing me abit one question do when gearing down say your in high range gearing gown from 16th would you have you put the clutch in 15th release the clutch clutch in and 14th all the way down?
No you don't use the clutch . You pre select down a half a gear and then you let of the throttle it will come out of half gear you the. Give it a quick rev and it will go into the next lower gear on its own
that is a low inertia trans, that is what the l in rtlo stands for. there is no need to double clutch if you split every gear, the splitter is not overdrive. overdrive is the highest gear with the stick. low split is a slight reduction. what i mean is that over and up against the dash, in high range and high split is 1-1, when put in the next hole ( over and down) then you are in overdrive, low split with a slight reduction to your o/d = .86 and high split = .73
that is a common misconception from the old days when the early 13 speeds actually were direct with o/d split. that was the old design level 6. modern 13 speeds are the same as the 18
+Mijc Osis (mycosys) true that O/D is output speed faster that engine RPM, however my comment was in response to others calling it a double over shock it is not. It high gear with the stick coupled with low split = .86 O/D ratio and high split = .73 overdrive ratio. That does not mean double over just because there are 2 choices, because low split is a slight reduction coupled with O/D in main box, high split is direct coupled with O/D in main box.
Ashime Queeman When you split you don't necessarily need to use the clutch. Eaton Fuller doesn't say it. To split back to direct, keep the foot on the gas, split back, ease off the accelerator then "lift" your revs by 200. Sort of like blipping your throttle in the car when you shift back a gear to accelerate.
I'm only in my teen years and sometimes if i get the time i drive a 13speed,,,18speed confuses me too much but i dont double clutch i only step on the clutch to the floor if i wanna jake shift double de clutch doesnt work for me
Wynand Rautenbach Fairly simple mate. Just count it as 2 X 4 speeds stacked on top of each other. Leave the splitter alone until you are comfortable with the box. Each gear is 400rpm apart. so 1500 to 1100 on the way up and 1100 up to 1500 on the way down. As Timmeh says, the only difference is splitting the bottom of the box. If the 18 is too many gears for you, you wouldn't like my old Road Boss. It had 72 to play with. Hehehe
Brodie Shepherd yeah MC. Multi combination. Length limited to 53.5m but weight is limited by the GCM of the truck. The licence has no weight limitation
Dude, you should be an instructor. You explain it better than most of the clowns out there. (Here's looking at you Punjabi licenses for $200, shady shit)
+Jerry Jerry Jerry And spend 201,000 per year. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Truck driving is truck driving the world over. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It comes in once a week/month whatever and goes out VERY VERY QUICKLY.
dave scott The mining boom in Australia has ended and the camp jobs are rapidly dwindling with former employees going back from whence they came in their thousands as mines drastically cut production and employee (contractor) numbers thus the chance of getting a job with one of the large mining companies driving fixed route ore carrying etc is Zip Zero Zilch. Traditional on highway road trains are used for carrying general freight over long distances and, as a previous poster wrote, the sleeper is the accommodation provided to the driver. Apart from that you need to be very self reliant with a goodly amount of mechanical knowledge and be able to get yourself out of trouble -- or better still not get into it in the first place. I am sure there are plenty of similar jobs in Canada where you can gain the experience you want. What is Class 1 in Canada. ???

Drove and filmed at the same time like a champ! Look at that red desert
Which red desert are you referring to the big one outside or the smaller one inside, with a bit of water and a packet of seeds you could grow your own veggies on that dash board. Just kidding, that Bull dust gets everywhere, a good instructional video thanks.
daveyork0 welcome to Western Australia

This is better than all the other videos
I drive HR and have always wondered how the 18 speed gear boxes work, thanks heaps!
Done good there bud, imformative and well presented,
Hella video, man. Respect!
I'm also not a truck driver, just do it for a living, too. Cheers from Colorado, in the US.
If I can, I'll definitely open a Freight Company here in the Philippines and run Road Trains. Such a badass Kenworth.
Thanks for the video, it might be years later but this is still extremely informative in 2020. This is gonna help me a lot in my future endeavors!
Greetings and G'day - mighty fine explanation...hope your going strong 7 years after the above video. Thanks.

I'd also rather go for me roadranger ticket when i go for my HR,,,,,,Allison Spicer box is too complicated
Wynand Rautenbach yea iv heard of the allison spicer box and was explained the gear changing i was like wtf haha
dunno i just know the roadranger got my license driving a freightliner argosy with a series 60 detroit diesel was a wicked coe to drive on my learners
nice :D Im going get my HR on an International 9800i Eagle 13speed manual fuller the best COE on Continental Africa
good luck
love the c501 brute. worth looking after it. they are getting rare these days.
Good to see proper double cluch usage, all these drivers who brag they don't use the clutch are just rounding their gears prematurely
i remember watching this when you first posted this, going for my licence. Great video! Would love to see more vids!
Love your understatement mate. Grew up here..watching dad n then me self
Good vid mate a lot of “professional drivers” have a chip on there shoulder and don’t explain anything good info and visuals 👍🏼 and also probably a lot of guys who think there pro never pulled 3 trailers before ha! 👍🏼
A Pro in trucking i need more from you because I see you are the best ever
Not a truck driver by any means? Oh yeah just driving a road train 🤙🏻
Hahah was thinking the same thing, just casually driving a triple road train
Uuuuuuh
fake it till you make it
Great video I would love to drive a truck with a 18 speed box like this one day
I learned the basics of operation from watching this video. Thank you.
Thanks Ross, I really enjoyed your video and casual easy going commentary.... keep up the good work.
Awesome mate, I'm sitting my practical tomorrow 👍🏼
I watched this before my hr, im going for my mc soon, my favourite part is the ole boss on the radio.
most useful video I've seen yet cheers
Great vid mate love the 501
Man awesome video, really enjoyed watching this.
Excellent to the point relaxed demonstration and explanation.
You did a great job mate its good information for begginers before they go for test 👍
Thank you heaps bud, gave me a great understanding of how it work !
That was well done . From a truck driver, you're selling yourself short though. Good job mate.
Thanks mate I drove a 401 today never drove a 18 speed before I do alright going up gears but shit down the gears.
Thanks mate!
Awesome...very informative!
Have a great day!
Cheers mate I'm doing my hr knowledge test tomorrow then particle test
Wicked - awesome vid mate

clutch brake is when you're stopped and wanna put it in gear.
This primemover has a clutch brake. It's engaged by pressing the clutch pedal to the floor. As the bloke above me correctly pointed out, they're for selecting a gear while stationary.

Driving a RR one handed while recording a Video and steering with your knees with another Road Train telling you to hurry up! Only in Australia!
best video so far...
Excellent video. KENWORTH IS TUFF.
Pretty cool bro made it look easy!
Does a great job explaining this especially including rev gaps .not like all those yanks explain it
Thank you for share your experiences 🙏🤟🏻☺️
mate youre doing it exactly how i would its all about the kiss method nice driving
Hey mate, appreciate this video....
i have to say the this box is easy to drive they work well with the 550 cat and the 18 speed mack box works well with the cummins gen ll
lol...old mate giving you the hurry up on the UHF..😂😂
love the vid helps alot considering I live over in the uk closest I get to a truck is virtually atm but its good practice personally 12 and 18 speeds are easiest though I prefer 18
Love it -" Making Gravy" ;)
no dramas mate! thanks for watching!
thanks mate for putting in the effort I like the way you do it and the you explained it I drive a heavy rigged truck and like to stepit up one day
Very good video I'm 14 love truck the gears are confusing me abit one question do when gearing down say your in high range gearing gown from 16th would you have you put the clutch in 15th release the clutch clutch in and 14th all the way down?
nice video mate👌
Wow 18 speed that's synchronized 😲. I'm sure your left leg is twice the size of the other.
Cool educational video! :)
Cheers! Great explanation.
kool thanx bro awesome vid
Thanks mate. Very helpful.
cool good video ross
Great vid mate thanks for that
One of the best!
Good work!😎👍🏻
Willow drink bottle is always key on the passenger floor.
Nice style. Easy to follow and understand. Maybe it's just because I'm an aussie too. :-) I hope not.
great review mate
I’ll stick with the push button automatic. Coffee in one hand and cigarette in the other. Nice vid bruh.
great video mate
I'd recognize your voice anywhere Andrew
Thanks for video bro!
I assume that switching back from OD to direct must be the same as switching up, just a pump of the clutch and it changes down?
No you don't use the clutch . You pre select down a half a gear and then you let of the throttle it will come out of half gear you the. Give it a quick rev and it will go into the next lower gear on its own
william Delarge Oh cool, thanks for the clarification.Considering getting a licence for HR Constant Mesh, so that's good to know.
Awesome bro
Thanks so much
Hey guys . I see Ross uses the clutch to split and not using the method of releasing foot off the accelerator to split gears ? can this be done ?
thanks very much! its very helpful!
Let's see a volvo driver freak out when their 12spd auto is given the fling for a 909 detroit😂
that is a low inertia trans, that is what the l in rtlo stands for. there is no need to double clutch if you split every gear, the splitter is not overdrive. overdrive is the highest gear with the stick. low split is a slight reduction. what i mean is that over and up against the dash, in high range and high split is 1-1, when put in the next hole ( over and down) then you are in overdrive, low split with a slight reduction to your o/d = .86 and high split = .73

Patrick Criswell eccept you only split high range
Patrick Criswell and low range reduction is slightly different
Patrick Criswell overdrive is any gear where the dive shaft turns faster than the engine.
+Mijc Osis (mycosys) true that O/D is output speed faster that engine RPM, however my comment was in response to others calling it a double over shock it is not. That does not mean double over just because there are 2 choices, because low split is a slight reduction coupled with O/D in main box, high split is direct coupled with O/D in main box.
good video mate but not using clutch is a better option for longer clutch life
can you skip change with higher gear rating gear box with fairly steep country
425 CAT, pacific logging truck
cheers mate...gr8 stuff...
So when you are switching it back to direct do you have to use the clutch to put it back in direct then swicth up gears as you go???

Exactly !!!!
Nice vid brother. C-15? What's your job and where in Aus? More vids in the future? Thanks in advance.
Where was/is the country? And what kind or type of crew are you heading for out there? Just curious.
That helped alot with the splitter is that 12 or 18 speed
18
Do today's modern trucks still come with non synchromesh transmission as an option?
Some do some don’t, depends on the manufacturer
Legend Thanks Ross
I'm only in my teen years and sometimes if i get the time i drive a 13speed,,,18speed confuses me too much but i dont double clutch i only step on the clutch to the floor if i wanna jake shift double de clutch doesnt work for me
the 13 speed is the same shift patten a a 18 speed the difference is on a 13 speed you don't split the bottom box.
I am aware of that but the 18 speed is just too much gears for me
fai enough
Easier than 13, try it.
Wynand Rautenbach Fairly simple mate. Just count it as 2 X 4 speeds stacked on top of each other.

good video thanks for share
Do you have a MC (multi-combination) driving licence. In New Zealand this is known as a Class 5 which is 25,001kg-max gross combined weight.
How many horsepower ross i'm guessing a 600hp Cummins Signature
How much can drivers make running road trains? I drive class 1 in Canada and want to switch to Australian road trains.
+dave scott in australia you can make 200,000+ a year
+Jerry Jerry Jerry
And spend 201,000 per year. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Truck driving is truck driving the world over. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It comes in once a week/month whatever and goes out VERY VERY QUICKLY.
lots of camp jobs? or accommodations provided?
+dave scott that's what your sleeper is for
dave scott

Would you have used all 18 speeds if your road-train would have been fully loaded?
about 80 tonnes yes.. 5 tonnes no..
true..5tonnes no way but 80-150tons for sure
Does it got a cat c15 in it
Driving 18 speed which gear best to use going a hill
@MrWhatevauwanacallme ok
Low.
3406e or c15 cat?
Bulldust --- ain't it a bitch !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! All the Armourgard in the world won't help -- red bull dust is red bull dust and you just learn to live with it.
